Description of your changes

Summary

Add common.ExitError, a kong.ExitCoder that main honours, and use it so
crossplane resource simulate reports its result through its exit status.

Behaviour change (user-visible)

resource simulate used to exit 0 whenever it rendered its output, even when
a plan would change resources or a resource couldn't be planned. It now exits:

  • 0: no changes.
  • 1: the simulation failed, including when any resource couldn't be planned
(the per-resource error is still in the output, which renders first).
  • 3: a plan would create, update, destroy or replace a resource.
  • 80: invalid flags (kong's usage status, unchanged).
  • 130: interrupted (unchanged).

Why: CI can tell "changes" from "no changes" without parsing output, and a
failed read no longer looks like a no-op. project simulate will use the same
statuses and the same mechanism in #436. Scripts that treat any non-zero exit
from resource simulate as failure will need to accept 3.

For every command, an empty --config (--config=, or --config with no
value) now exits 80 like any other flag error, instead of 1. It is checked
before kong parses the flags, so it didn't go through kong's usage status.

What changed

  • cmd/crossplane/common/exit.go: ExitError{Err, Code} (by value). With a
nil Err it is a result, not an error: SilentExit matches it, also
through kong's Context.Run join with nil AfterRun errors, but not when it
is wrapped with a message or joined with a real error, so no message is lost.
ExitCodeChanges = 3. A non-nil Err with its own Code is for feat(project): add alpha project simulate on the ported crossplane-diff engine #436's
project simulate (exit 2 on schema validation, 80 for flag conflicts it
detects in Run); on main only the silent form is used.
  • cmd/crossplane/main.go: a silent ExitError exits with its code and prints
nothing (also on interrupt); other errors go through FatalIfErrorf, which
already honours kong.ExitCoder. An invalid --config exits
exitUsageError (80, kong's usage status, which kong doesn't export).
  • internal/plan: Summary.Changes().
  • cmd/crossplane/simulate: exitStatus after rendering; help gains the
    exit-status section.

Testing

  • TestSilentExit (nil, silent, with error, wrapped, kong join, joined with
    error, pointer).
  • TestExitStatus for each resource simulate path (0, 3, 1, 1 over 3).
  • go build ./..., go vet, ./nix.sh run .#test, ./nix.sh run .#lint.

Related

I have:

  • Read and followed Crossplane's contribution process.
  • Run ./nix.sh flake check to ensure this PR is ready for review. (./nix.sh run .#test and ./nix.sh run .#lint pass.)
  • Added or updated unit tests.
  • Linked a PR or a docs tracking issue to document this change. (exit codes documented in the command help in this PR)
  • Added backport release-x.y labels to auto-backport this PR.

Walkthrough

The simulate command now returns distinct outcomes for plan errors, changes, and no changes. The CLI recognizes silent exit errors, suppresses their messages, and uses their supplied codes. Invalid config flags exit with status 80, and interrupted commands exit with status 130.

Changes: Simulation exit status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Silent exit error contract
internal/simulate/exit.go, internal/simulate/exit_test.go
ExitError carries an exit code and an optional wrapped error. SilentExit identifies silent exit errors. Tests cover nil, wrapped, joined, and pointer errors.
Simulation outcome selection
internal/plan/output.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate_test.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/help/simulate.md
Plan summaries count create, update, destroy, and replace actions. The simulate command returns a plan error, exit code 3 when plans have changes, or nil when plans have no errors or changes. Tests and help text describe the outcomes.
CLI silent exit handling
cmd/crossplane/main.go, cmd/crossplane/main_test.go
The CLI exits with the code from a silent exit error without printing it. It uses status 130 for interruptions and status 80 for config-flag parsing errors. An empty argument after --config returns an error.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The changed behavior is in the existing experimental resource simulate command. cmd/crossplane/resource/resource.go:28 already marks Simulate with maturity:"alpha", and cmd/crossplane/main.go:157-159 applies the EnableAlpha configuration through maturity.Apply. The PR adds no files under apis/**; its other changes implement exit statuses, tests, and help text. Therefore the significant behavior change has an existing feature-gate implementation.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

The pull request changes behavior under cmd/** without a supplied breaking-change label. In cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go, Cmd.Run now returns an error for errored plans and a silent exit code 3 for plans with changes after rendering; the base version returned only the renderer result. cmd/crossplane/main.go now propagates the silent status. This removes the previous successful exit behavior for these simulation outcomes. The standing failure is therefore unresolved.

Resolution

Apply the breaking-change label. If that label is not appropriate, restore the previous exit behavior for changed and errored simulation plans.

Account for --config validation in the status list.

If a user runs resource simulate --config=, configFlag rejects the empty value before Kong parses the flags. main then exits 1, not the documented 80. Could you either make that validation exit 80 or qualify this entry so CI users can distinguish the cases? (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add the required breaking-change label.

For a successfully rendered plan with changes, resource simulate now exits with status 3 instead of status 0. This removes an observable CLI behavior under the mandatory cmd/** rule. The PR label list is empty.

… simulate

Add common.ExitError, a kong.ExitCoder; with a nil Err it is a result, not
an error, and main exits with its code without printing, also when kong's
Run joins it with nil hook errors. resource simulate now exits 3 when a plan
would change anything and 1 when any plan errored, so CI can tell changes
from no changes.

Comment thread internal/simulate/exit.go Resolved
ExitError, ExitCodeChanges and SilentExit are specific to simulations, so
they move from cmd/crossplane/common into internal/simulate. main imports
internal/simulate directly; internal/simulate imports nothing from cmd/, so
there is no cycle.

Reject an empty value after --config.

When a shell passes --config "", configFlag returns "" without an error. config.ResolvePath then selects the environment or default config, so the new exit-80 branch does not run. Could you reject an empty next argument here? An explicit empty flag should not select a different config. Thanks for aligning invalid flag exit codes. (github.com)

Add command-level coverage for the changed status flow.

TestExitStatus covers only the helper. A regression in Cmd.Run could return the planning error or exit-3 status before writing the rendered plan, while the current cases would still pass. Could you add a focused command-level test, or a small test seam around the render-and-status portion, that asserts both rendered output and the returned status for changed and errored plans?
