What is the current behavior?

CLI and Xcode builds invalidate each other. They use different DerivedData locations and different settings, so switching between them rebuilds. Debug device builds archive and export each time. Device discovery waits a fixed 6 seconds.

What is the new behavior?

  • DerivedData lives in platforms/ios/build, set through the per-user WorkspaceSettings. -derivedDataPath isn't passed because it moves the module caches, which are part of every compile command, and that stops CLI and Xcode builds sharing output.
  • Settings that made the builds differ come off the command line: -sdk and forced explicit modules are gone, and the deployment target moves to the Podfile's post_install.
  • Simulator builds target the specific destination.
  • Debug device builds use a plain build and package the .app as an .ipa. Release builds still archive.
  • The compilation cache lives in platforms/.cache/ios, so regenerating platforms/ios still reuses unchanged compiles.
  • Discovery ends as soon as the requested device is found, and only then, up to the existing 6-second limit. Without a requested device, or with a numeric index, the existing 2-second minimum stays, so indexes don't change.

Testing

Measured on a large app during development, before and after the DerivedData and build changes:

Scenario Before After
Simulator, cold ns run 230.1 s 169.2 s
Simulator, Xcode build after a CLI build 30.9 s 25.0 s
Simulator, regenerate platform 173.5 s 162.0 s
Device, ns run after a JS change 156.1 s 80.6 s
Simulator, ns run with no changes 54.4 s 51.5 s

No-change runs barely move here because they're mostly CLI overhead rather than build time. Those benchmark numbers are from an earlier state of the branch and weren't rerun on this final commit. They also don't include NativeScript/ios#529.

The full stack also ran end to end on a demo app on a simulator and an iPad.

Upgrade note: existing projects rebuild once, since DerivedData moves. Xcode's global DerivedData entry for the project is no longer used and can be deleted.

Part of a stack

Base: #6177. Next: #6179.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • iOS debug device builds now produce an IPA, while release and App Store builds produce archives. Builds can target a selected simulator or device.
    • iOS builds now use a dedicated DerivedData location and compilation-cache settings. Applicable app build settings and deployment targets are applied to CocoaPods targets.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Device discovery can recognize a requested simulator while physical-device discovery is running, without ending discovery prematurely.
    • Swift package resolution is reported only when both the lockfile and package sources are present.

Walkthrough

The PR updates requested-device discovery and iOS build behavior. It changes DerivedData and compilation-cache configuration, applies build settings to CocoaPods, updates Xcode build actions, checks SPM package state, and packages non-archive device builds as IPAs.

Changes: Requested-device discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Requested-device discovery flow
lib/common/definitions/mobile.d.ts, lib/common/mobile/ios/device/ios-device-operations.ts, lib/common/mobile/mobile-core/devices-service.ts, lib/common/test/unit-tests/mobile/*
Initialization passes a callback that matches a requested device by identifier, display name, or image identifier. When the callback is set, discovery services run concurrently. iOS polling checks the callback every 100 ms and completes when it reports a match. Tests cover callback matching and discovery completion.

iOS build setup and packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
DerivedData and SPM package state
lib/services/ios-project-service.ts, lib/services/ios/spm-service.ts, test/ios-project-service.ts
Build products and workspace settings use DerivedData paths. SPM resolution requires both a lockfile and a DerivedData SourcePackages directory. Tests cover workspace settings and preservation of existing values.
Compilation-cache and Podfile settings
lib/definitions/project.d.ts, lib/services/ios-project-service.ts, lib/services/cocoapods-service.ts, test/ios-project-service.ts, test/cocoapods-service.ts
Compilation-cache settings are merged into generated plugin xcconfigs and passed to CocoaPods. The Podfile hook applies settings to pod targets and updates lower or missing deployment targets. Tests cover generated settings and removal of the generated section.
Xcode build actions and IPA packaging
lib/definitions/ios.d.ts, lib/services/ios/xcodebuild-args-service.ts, lib/services/ios/xcodebuild-service.ts, test/services/ios/*
Build arguments target selected simulators or devices. Release and App Store device builds archive; other device builds use the build action and package the app as an IPA. Tests cover destinations, arguments, and packaging.

Move the DerivedData path helpers to a standalone module.

spm-service.ts and xcodebuild-args-service.ts import pure helpers from ios-project-service.ts, which also registers iOSProjectService when loaded. Move getDerivedDataPath, getCompilationCachePath, and DERIVED_DATA_RELATIVE_PATH to lib/services/ios/derived-data-paths.ts, then import them from that module. A future import from ios-project-service.ts to either consumer would otherwise create a circular module dependency.

options.fullDiscovery and options.isRequestedDeviceFound with optional access,
so polling without options does not throw.
- Line 89: Update the polling behavior around pollInterval so numeric --device
selections retain the previous 2000 ms initial discovery window, allowing
additional devices to appear before index-based selection; preserve the 100 ms
polling behavior for other selections.
- Line 95: Update the polling completion condition around foundDevice so that,
when options.isRequestedDeviceFound is provided, polling ends only when it
reports the requested device is present. Retain the existing foundDevice and
fullDiscovery fallback only when that callback is absent.

lib/services/ios/xcodebuild-service.ts:88-90
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Write the debug IPA to buildConfig.outputPath when it is set.

outputPath is a supported directory for the build result. This branch always creates the IPA under platformData.getBuildOutputPath(buildConfig), while artifact discovery searches buildConfig.outputPath. A caller that passes the previous default output directory now gets the IPA under DerivedData, so discovery fails before device installation.

Suggested fix

Update the debug IPA output path in the code around
`platformData.getBuildOutputPath` to use `buildConfig.outputPath` when set,
falling back to the platform build output directory otherwise, and ensure the
selected directory exists. Keep the `.app` and IPA staging paths under the
platform build output directory; write only the final `.ipa` to the selected
output path.

@rigor789
rigor789 force-pushed the feat/ios-shared-derived-data branch from b70757d to d87444d Compare October 30, 2026 19:50
DerivedData moves into platforms/ios/build through the per-user WorkspaceSettings, so CLI and Xcode builds reuse each other's output. Settings that made the two builds differ come off the xcodebuild command line: -sdk and forced explicit modules are gone, and the deployment target moves into the Podfile post_install.

Simulator builds target the specific destination, debug device builds use a plain build instead of an archive, and the compilation cache lives in platforms/.cache/ios. Device discovery stops waiting as soon as the requested device is found.
With 100 ms polling, an unrelated device ended the wait almost immediately. A requested device now only ends it by being found, and otherwise the 2 seconds the old polling allowed still apply, so device indexes stay stable.
