Name the archive of core download --no-extract after the release - #355
wp core download --no-extract saved a freshly downloaded archive under the name of the temporary download file, such as wp_aB3dEf.zip. Only an archive taken from the cache got the release name, such as wordpress-4.5-de_DE.zip. Both now get the release name, and URL downloads get the file name from the URL.
The scenario covering this now starts from an empty cache. Before, it only passed because the scenario before it had put the same archive in the cache, and it failed when run on its own or in a parallel test run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Downloads made with --no-extract now use a meaningful archive filename: URL downloads retain the URL’s basename, while WordPress.org downloads use a name based on the selected version and locale. A fallback filename is used when the expected name is unavailable.
Tests
Updated the no-extract download scenario to begin with an empty cache.
A freshly downloaded archive was saved under the name of the temporary
download file, while one taken from the cache got the release name. Use the
release name in both cases, and the name from the URL for URL downloads.
Make the scenario covering this start from an empty cache, so that it no
longer depends on the scenario before it having filled the cache.

Walkthrough
When wp core download runs with --no-extract, the copied archive now uses a URL-based or generated WordPress archive name instead of the temporary download filename. The feature scenario starts with an empty cache.
Changes: No-extract archive naming
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Archive naming and empty-cache scenario src/Core_Command.php, features/core-download.feature
The no-extract path selects the URL basename or generated WordPress archive name. If that name is empty or ., it uses the temporary archive basename. The feature scenario now starts with an empty cache.
Guard existing destination files and report failed archive copies before merging. Otherwise, downloads can overwrite local files or report success without saving the archive.

Cast $locale to string at line 207.
$locale comes from Utils\get_flag_value(), which is typed mixed. PHPStan level 9 rejects mixed in string interpolation, so composer phpstan fails. Lines 270 and 279 already interpolate $locale and have this error. A single string cast at line 207 resolves every instance. Run composer phpstan to confirm the cast.
Attribution
This error predates the change. Lines 270 and 279 are outside the changed hunk and have the same error at the merge base. This PR adds one more instance and does not create the failing gate.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base f188c41b9af3); the change keeps it reachable.

Check the result of copy() before reporting success.
When the target directory already contains a directory named wordpress-{version}-{locale}.zip, copy() fails and returns false. The result is ignored, so the command still prints "WordPress downloaded." and no archive is placed at the requested destination. The archive name is now predictable, so this case is reachable.

Guard named archive copies against existing files.
With --no-extract, a URL download now copies the archive to the URL's basename without checking the destination. A URL ending in wp-config.php overwrites an existing wp-config.php in a directory that lacks other WordPress core files. Check file_exists() on the destination path and stop unless --force is set.

Good catch, especially now that the name is predictable. Both copies, from a fresh download and from the cache, now fail with an error instead of reporting success.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@schlessera Thanks. Both archive-copy paths now check copy() and call WP_CLI::error() on failure. This addresses the false-success finding.
The separate overwrite finding remains open. copy() can successfully overwrite an existing file. The supplied code still needs a destination-exists check before copying unless --force is set.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Leaving that as it is: copying an archive taken from the cache has always overwritten a file of the same name, and this change only makes a fresh download behave the same way. The file being replaced is an archive of the same release and locale, so nothing of value is lost. Refusing to overwrite without --force would be a separate change in behavior for both paths.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@schlessera Understood. For release-and-locale archives, the fresh-download path now matches the existing cache behavior. Requiring --force for those replacements would be a separate behavior change.
The URL-basename overwrite case is distinct, but I respect your decision to leave overwrite behavior unchanged in this PR. I will not press for that change here.
On the follow-up about casting $locale: the PHPStan job passes on this PR. wp-cli-tests ships a type extension that infers the type of get_flag_value() from the command's docblock, where locale is declared as a string, so there is nothing to change here.
* Save the archive of core download --no-extract safely
An archive downloaded from a URL was named after the URL since #355, which
let whoever provides the URL choose the name and type of a file written
into the target directory. Keep the random name of the temporary file for
these again, with the extension detected from the archive.
Save the archive by writing a new file with a random name next to its
destination and moving it into place, so that a symlink at the destination
is replaced instead of written through.
