feat(tools): the guardedWrite tool on top of the writer's guard API (U5-A, #1375) - #2359
Second unit of the #1914 split plan recorded on #1991 (plan comment 6717413931, addendum 6717425955). Declared merge order is main -> PR #1913 -> U5-B (this PR's parent content, PR #2357) -> this unit. Content is src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts and src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts, taken unchanged from 74f5eb287d1b, plus the one knip.json line that declares core/tools/guardedWrite.ts as a src workspace entry. 3 files, 2000+/6-.

All three by the repository's own counting rules (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs line accounting, MAX_CHANGED_LINES = 500, executable source lines; spec files are not counted), run locally at pinned node v22.23.4 on committed trees. The plan's addendum records why the gate reads cumulatively against the PR base and why a unit can only come back green after its predecessor lands: the number 607 is the stacked figure that applies while #1913 and #2357 are unmerged, and 394 is what this unit contributes once they are in.
Why it sits on #2357, measured rather than assumed
The tool's only dependency on the previous unit is Task's cancellationGeneration field, which guardedWrite reads at six sites. A variant carrying the writer and the tool but not Task (vps2f-1914-u5c) fails tsc with eight TS2339 errors for that property, which is what proved the merge order.
The unit also cannot precede the writer for the opposite reason: knip --production does not credit imports from files it reports as unused, so a writer-only unit has to declare the writer as an entry instead - the line the previous unit carries. Moving the entry here (it drops services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts! and adds core/tools/guardedWrite.ts!) is what makes both units pass knip in isolation, which matters because knip is a required status check on main.
Required contexts, read from the ruleset array for this head
Protect Main (ruleset 15494382) lists rules as an array; the member type: "required_status_checks" has parameters check-translations, platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest), platform-unit-test (windows-latest), compile, knip, e2e-mock with strict_required_status_checks_policy: false. The pull_request member requires required_approving_review_count: 1 with require_code_owner_review: true, so a code-owner approval - a human - is what gates this PR, not a check.
Local gates on the committed tree 025fb7d0da0d9a075855addc0986fe7989c9a52b, pinned node v22.23.4
prettier --check on the three touched files: clean.
eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 core/tools/guardedWrite.ts core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts: exit 0, no suppression count change (src/eslint-suppressions.json is re-serialised cosmetically by that flag and is reverted before the commit; deep-equal after key sort).
Two local reds are environmental and were named from reason lines, not inferred: services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts fails 5 rows at its own fs.symlink setup with EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink ... (proved pre-existing at the parent head by stashing the touched files and re-running), and core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts emits EnvironmentTeardownError: [vitest-worker]: Closing rpc while "onUserConsoleLog" was pending only inside a full-shard concurrent run - the same file run alone is 339 passed (339) with zero such errors, twice.
Disclosures, same as the parent PR: no local Stryker preflight was run for this head, and no Stryker disable directive was added anywhere.
What this PR does not claim
It does not claim the hosted legs yet - they were queued when this body was written, and the verdicts will be read from the check-runs rather than predicted. It does not claim #1914 can close: the plan's partition assigns 193 + 394 = 587 lines over #1913's head to U5-B and U5-A, and #1914's own review questions (Q1 on the two superseded refusals, Q2 on U5-A's a+d of 1999 against the 1000 line) are recorded as open on #1991.
…ve (U1, issue 1375)
Split unit U1 of PR 1833. Three changes, each with a test that fails without it:
- a caller-supplied staging path is checked for location and file type before anything is written, so an arbitrary path or a symlink cannot be published onto the target;
- a failed parent-directory fsync on POSIX is reported as PostCommitDurabilityError instead of being swallowed, so a successful return never claims durability the filesystem did not grant;
- the staged file and this write's own staging directory are released before RollbackFailureError is thrown.
Focused coverage for resolveLockKey added: canonical parent directory, a dangling-link chain, and termination at the bounded depth on a two-link cycle.
…ishTarget (U1, issue 1375)
The resolver may fall back to the given path only when lstat also reports the path as absent. An EACCES or EIO failure says nothing about whether the path is a link, so falling back would publish through a link we were not allowed to inspect. Focused tests added for both branches.
… type-sound
compile failed at the unit head on three points:
- RollbackFailureError needs a string backupPath, but the throw now happens after cleanup, so the
`string | null` narrowing was lost. The failure is now held as { error, backupPath }.
- The async lstat stand-in is built on the Stats prototype so it satisfies fsSync.Stats.
- The realpath/readlink mocks are typed to the real signatures; the readlink mock answers once
because only the link path is read.
tsc clean, 50 tests pass, ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean, no suppression change.
The read tools record the observed on-disk version through task.observationRegistry, but the field
was only declared in a later unit, so at this head the call dereferences undefined and the mocked
e2e run fails on the read_file smoke tests. The registry is introduced by this unit, so the field
belongs here.
tsc clean on this unit, 11 observationRegistry tests pass, ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean.
…rtion
This unit was rebuilt from the pre-fix content source, so its copy of safeWriteText.ts
still restored the backup over a write whose commit rename had already succeeded when
the parent-directory fsync failed, and its spec asserted rmdir generically rather than
against the staging directory this write created.
Both are already settled in unit 1 (fws/u1-atomic-publish). Taking those files here
keeps the shared code byte-identical across the units, so merging the chain in order
does not overwrite unit 1's fix.
Tests: 52 passed in safeWriteText.spec.ts.
…s notice
The template literal continued on an indented source line, so the model-facing
output carried four leading tabs before the content. Replace the indented newline
with an explicit escape so the notice and the content are separated by a single
newline and nothing else.
Local note: readFileTool.spec.ts cannot run in this worktree (isbinaryfile is not
resolvable from either node_modules here); CI covers it.
safeWriteJson rethrows RollbackFailureError and the telemetry callers record only
error.message, so the generic wrapper message lost the filesystem errno text of the
publish failure. Include the publish error message while keeping the rollback context
(publishError, rollbackError, backupPath) unchanged.
Tests: 52 passed in safeWriteText.spec.ts, ESLint clean with --max-warnings=0.
… rollback failure
The assertion accepted any rmdir argument, so a regression that removed a different
directory still passed. Read this write's own staging directory from fsSync.mkdirSync
and assert that exact path.
Tests: 52 passed in safeWriteText.spec.ts, ESLint clean with --max-warnings=0.
The dump path was the fixed sibling <target>.acl.tmp. A pre-existing user file at that
path is unlinked by the failed-save branch and by both cleanup paths, and two concurrent
writes to the same target share one dump, so one write can restore or delete the other's.
Use the per-write unique name like the staging file.
Tests: 52 passed in safeWriteText.spec.ts, ESLint clean with --max-warnings=0.
…eturned
A slice that starts after line 1 and reaches EOF is not truncated, so the branch said
"The file was read in full" even though the earlier lines were omitted. Name the slice
start when the read did not begin at line 1, and add a focused test for that case.
Local note: readFileTool.spec.ts cannot run in this worktree (isbinaryfile is not
resolvable from either node_modules here) and ESLint cannot resolve its config here;
CI covers both.
…opy backup)
Pre-merge review flagged the publication path as non-atomic when backup:true: it renamed the existing target to a
backup name and only then renamed the staged file into place, so the canonical path was absent for the whole commit
window - readers saw a missing file, and a concurrent writer could create a new target that a later rollback would
destroy.
The backup is now a copy, never a move:
- the destination is created with openSync(backupPath, "wx", 0o600) before any content exists at it, so no content
ever sits at a path whose mode fs.copyFile chose (it uses the platform creation mask subject to umask on some
platforms, the source's mode and read-only attribute on others);
- chmod 0o600 after the copy clears a copied read-only attribute (Windows) that would otherwise make the fsync open
fail with EACCES, and keeps a backup of a permissive file private;
- the copy is fsynced, then deleted once the commit rename has published; nothing is ever renamed back.
safeWriteText also rejects a staging file that is the target itself (same inode/device), which would otherwise let
a caller-supplied tempPath silently alias the target.
Tests: the safeWriteText spec is replaced with the copy-model spec plus a new integration spec that runs against the
real filesystem (no fs mocks) - success publishes and leaves no residue, and a directory target is rejected with the
payload bytes unchanged. The safeWriteJson spec moves from the three-rename/rollback model to the copy model, and the
lock-key spec accounts for the extra lstat the aliasing guard performs.
83 passed / 1 skipped across safeWriteText.spec + integration spec + safeWriteJson + safeWriteJson.lockKey; tsc and
eslint clean, no suppression drift.
Pre-merge review flagged that the write path trusts an unvalidated symlink target: safeWriteText resolves an
existing link to its referent and safeWriteJson then merges and publishes onto that referent, so a repository that
plants its project settings file as a link elsewhere receives the write at the linked path.
safeWriteJson now accepts confineTo. The check runs on the resolved publish target, after resolvePublishTarget and
before the merge read and before anything is staged, so a rejected write takes no lock and leaves no residue. Both
sides are canonicalized the same way: the scope is resolved through symlinks (walking to the nearest existing
ancestor when it does not exist yet, and rethrowing anything other than ENOENT), and the target is canonicalized
with the same helper because a target that does not exist yet still carries the alias components of the path it was
given.
Callers that picked a path from a known scope pass that scope; a caller that does not declare one keeps the current
behaviour. The MCP settings wiring that uses this is on the async-save series (Zoo-Code-Org#1403).
Tests: an out-of-scope path is rejected on every platform with no lock and no staged file; a planted link escaping
the project is rejected and the linked file keeps its bytes; a link inside the project still publishes to the
referent; and a scope declared through a symlinked directory that does not exist yet is accepted.
The staging-identity guard compared the caller-staged file with the target through fs.lstat(targetPath).catch(() =>
null). Any error other than ENOENT - EACCES, ENOTDIR, ELOOP - was therefore indistinguishable from "there is no
target", so a staging path that is a hard link of the target would pass the identity check, reach the commit rename,
and let the failure handler unlink the only copy of the content.
Only ENOENT now yields "no target"; anything else fails closed with a StagingPathError before anything is opened,
staged or renamed. Test: the staging path resolves to a hard link of the target (same ino/dev) and the target lstat
rejects with EACCES; the write is rejected with the comparison error and neither openSync nor rename is called.
The staging-identity guard read fs.Stats.ino/dev as JS numbers. On NTFS and ReFS those identifiers can exceed
Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, and the rounding makes two different files look identical - a valid caller-staged file is
then rejected with StagingPathError (and a real alias could be missed). Both lstats now request { bigint: true } and
the comparison checks for bigint values before comparing them.
The spec stand-in carries bigint ino/dev, matching what lstat({ bigint: true }) returns at runtime (fs.BigIntStats is
a type-only export, so the double is documented at its single assertion).
The identity stand-in returns bigint identifiers regardless of the options, so the same-file tests could still pass if
either lstat dropped { bigint: true } - which is exactly the case that matters on NTFS/ReFS. Both tests now assert
that every identity lstat requested bigint stats.
The calls are filtered by their options rather than by path spelling: path.resolve prefixes a drive letter to
/tmp/... on Windows, so a path filter would only see one of the two reads on that platform.
…served
On win32 the DACL of an existing target is saved before the commit rename so it can be reapplied afterwards. Two
paths silently skipped that step and still published:
- icacls /save failed (saved === false): the dump is cleaned up and the rename proceeds, so the new file inherits
different access rights;
- fs.access(targetPath) failed with something other than ENOENT (EACCES, ...): the catch treated "cannot check" as
"target absent" and skipped DACL handling entirely.
Both now report through a new onWarning sink (default console.warn): the write still proceeds - a missing or failing
icacls must not leave the user unable to save, which is the documented fallback - but the caller is told the
replacement may inherit different access rights instead of discovering it later.
Tests: icacls save failure still commits the write and yields exactly one access-rights warning; an EACCES on the
target yields the could-not-check warning and no icacls call. Verified as real regression tests - neutralizing the two
warn calls makes both fail. 272 passed / 4 skipped locally; tsc and eslint clean.
onWarning is documented as the sink for non-fatal safety notices, but delivery was not isolated from the write: an
onWarning callback that threw propagated to the outer failure handler before fs.rename, turning a non-fatal notice into a
failed save. The warn binding now catches callback failures and logs them. The restore-failure notice is routed through
the same binding so a caller supplying onWarning receives it. Same fix as the u6 unit, kept aligned across the series.
Local: safeWriteText 58/58 green; eslint clean, no suppression growth.
proper-lockfile creates ${lockKey}.lock beside the lock key, and the key is the
symlink referent. A repository that plants .roo/mcp.json -> ~/.ssh/config
therefore made a confined write create a lock directory OUTSIDE the declared
scope, and when that directory was not writable the caller got a
lock-acquisition error after up to five retries instead of
ConfinedPathEscapeError. The confinement check now runs on the lock key before
acquireFileLock and is repeated on the resolved publish target inside the lock
(a peer writer may have moved the referent in between); both checks share
_assertWithinScope so they canonicalize identically.
Ported across the file-safety unit series so every unit that declares a scope
carries the same guarantee (same fix as fws/u3-observation-completeness).
Series alignment for the two review findings fixed on fws/u6-apply-patch-wiring:
1. safeWriteText's warn wrapper could not catch a rejection from an async
onWarning sink - TypeScript accepts a value-returning callback where a void one
is expected - so the rejected promise was left unhandled, which under Node's
default mode can end the process after a write that already succeeded. The
wrapper now attaches a catch handler without awaiting (awaiting would let
warning delivery delay a committed write, or stall it on a hung sink) and
reports the rejection through the fallback sink.
2. safeWriteJson created the target's parent directory BEFORE the preflight
confinement check, so a confined write to an out-of-scope path with a missing
parent still created a directory outside confineTo. resolveLockKey and the check
need no directory to exist, so the order is now lock key, confinement, mkdir;
the in-lock check on the resolved publish target stays.
…ith doUnmock
- safeWriteText.integration.spec: the backup:true case bails out in the backup step (copyfile
over a directory), so the commit rename never runs and a regression in commit-failure cleanup
would pass. Added the backup:false case, which is the shape that reaches Step 4: the rename of
the staging file over the target directory fails and the staging file must be cleaned up.
- safeWriteJson.test: the finally blocks removed a vi.doMock registration with vi.unmock, which
vitest hoists to the top of the file, so the cleanup did not undo the registration where it
was written. Both sites now use vi.doUnmock, the non-hoisted counterpart.
Verified the two paths are distinct by calling safeWriteText against a real directory target:
backup:true fails at copyfile, backup:false fails at rename of the staging file.
Local: 29 passed / 4 skipped across the two specs; eslint clean on both files.
Task.ts initializes the registry per Task, but nothing read it off a real Task: the registry
tests exercise standalone instances and ReadFileTool's spec injects its own double, so the
wiring itself was unverified - a Task that never built a registry, or shared one across
Tasks, would pass every existing test while silently dropping read observations.
The new test constructs a real Task and asserts observationRegistry is an ObservationRegistry,
that a second Task gets a different instance, and that an observation recorded on one Task is
invisible to the other (parent and subtask authority over a file must stay separate).
Local: Task.dispose.test.ts 15 passed; eslint clean; no new tsc diagnostics in this file.
Security Boundaries: safeWriteJson resolves the publish target through realpath
before staging beside it, so a repository that ships .roo/mcp.json as a symlink to
a file OUTSIDE the workspace has that outside file replaced as soon as the user
edits a project MCP setting, deletes a server, or toggles tool always-allow. The
three project-capable write sites passed no confinement option, and the base
implementation renamed the link itself, so the external write is introduced here.
confineForMcpWrite(source) returns the provider cwd (falling back to
getWorkspacePath) for project writes and undefined for global ones - global
settings live in the user's own settings directory, which is deliberately not
confined. All three sites now pass it, so the write fails closed with
ConfinedPathEscapeError instead of touching the referent. This is the same change
as 256091d on fws/u3-observation-completeness (Zoo-Code-Org#1912); the unit branches are not
cumulative, so every branch that carries the writer needs its own copy.
Regression Evidence: the per-Task registry now fails closed on teardown too -
disposeOnce() clears it, so a disposed Task still reachable through a
parent/subtask reference cannot hand a token captured before teardown to a
guarded write. Two McpHub tests pin the call sites (a project-scoped allowlist
write carries confineTo = workspace root, a global one does not) and a
Task.dispose test pins the clear. The two-real-Task registry test added in
87986e9 already covers the distinctness the checklist row asked for.
Local: vitest McpHub + Task.dispose 89 passed. Negative controls: helper mutated
to return undefined -> project confine test fails; clear() commented out ->
disposal test fails; both restore green. tsc --noEmit 50 errors before and after
the change (unchanged branch baseline). eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings on all four
files, no suppression entry added or increased.
…every MCP confine site
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup: disposeOnce() cleared the registry, but a read that was
already awaiting fs.readFile when disposal began resumed afterwards and recorded the
file again - the disposed Task was authoritative once more, and it kept doing the new
post-read stat work for a turn that will never be acted on. ObservationRegistry.close()
now drops the entries AND refuses later observations, Task.disposeOnce() calls close(),
and both ReadFileTool paths skip the post-read stat + observe work when task.abort is
set (checked before the awaited stat, not after it).
Regression Evidence: the confinement fix touched three call sites but only
toggleToolAlwaysAllow was pinned. updateServerTimeout and deleteServer now have a
project case (confineTo = workspace root) and a global case (confineTo undefined) each;
the connection double is shared at describe scope so all four sites use one typed
fixture. safeWriteJson is mocked in this file, so a lower-level writer test cannot see
a missing MCP argument - each call site has to be pinned here.
Tests: 2 closure tests (close drops entries and reports closed; observe is a no-op after
close), 2 aborted-task tests (native and legacy path record nothing), 4 call-site
confinement tests, and the disposal test extended to assert the registry stays empty
when a late observation arrives.
Local: 203 passed across readFileTool, McpHub, Task.dispose and observationRegistry.
Negative controls, each mutate -> test fails -> restore -> passes: ReadFileTool guard
neutered, ObservationRegistry closure guard neutered (fails both the registry spec and
the Task disposal test), and close() downgraded to clear() (fails the disposal test).
tsc --noEmit 50 errors before and after (unchanged branch baseline, 0 in touched files).
eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings across all 8 touched files; no suppression entry changed.
The abort guard sat before the post-read fs.stat, so a cancellation that
lands while that stat is in flight still recorded an observation - for a
run that will never act on the read, and into a registry that disposal has
already retired. Both paths now re-check task.abort after the await and
before observe(); the read itself still answers the model.
Two tests flip task.abort inside the pending post-read stat, one per path,
and assert observe() was never called and the registry stayed empty.
The row "logs and still publishes when the target's mode cannot be read", added
in 7bf2654, asserted that the error log contains the path the test handed
safeWriteJson. The helper logs the target it resolved, and on Windows those two
spellings differ whenever a component of the path carries an 8.3 name, so this
row went red on the windows leg of f739a5f - misc reported 1 failed | 118
passed | 1 skipped with "AssertionError: expected \"error\" to be called with
arguments: [ StringContaining{...}, Anything ]" - while the ubuntu leg of the
same head passed.
Reproduced here on the pinned node v22.23.4 by pointing TEMP at a directory that
has an 8.3 name (TEMP=C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2): the same row failed with the
same assertion, and the printed diff named the mechanism. The test's path was
C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2\safeWriteJson-test-E6lc0Q\test-file.json and the log
named C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f\safeWriteJson-test-E6lc0Q\
test-file.json: same directory, same file, different spelling. The CI log elides
both strings, so what is being named is the class - an assertion that pins the
caller's spelling against a writer-resolved spelling - not the runner's
direction, which its log does not show.
The fix pins what resolution preserves instead: the mkdtemp directory's own name
and the file's name, with the original two-argument matcher kept, the target
identified by its name. The claim is unchanged - the failure must still be
logged, and the log must still name the target - but it is no longer stated as a
spelling. Before the change this file's other 52 rows already passed under that
aliased TEMP, and this was the only assertion in the file that compared a
stringContaining against a path variable, measured from the file itself.
Gates below were run after committing, against this tree, on pinned node
v22.23.4: the file runs 53 passed / 4 skipped under TEMP=C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\
TMP-AL~2, under TEMP=C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f and under the
default temp; eslint --max-warnings=0 exits 0 with src/eslint-suppressions.json
untouched; prettier --check exits 0. Test-only: no implementation line moves.
… wrapper
Two module-private helpers on this branch reimplemented `src/utils/errorCode.ts`,
which main already ships and which `safeWriteJson.ts` already imports:
- `safeWriteJson._scopeErrorCode` (2 call sites) -> `getErrorCode`
- `safeWriteText.errorCode` (8 call sites) -> `getErrorCode`
- `safeWriteText._fsyncFile(fd)` wrapped a single `fsSync.fsyncSync(fd)` call; the 4
call sites now call it directly.
Equivalence was checked at the call sites rather than assumed. All 10 uses compare
the result against a string code literal (`=== "ENOENT"`, `!== "ENOENT"`, and the
ENOTDIR variants), so the one real difference between the bodies - main's helper
additionally guards `typeof error.code === "string"`, `_scopeErrorCode` casts, and
`errorCode` stringifies - cannot change a decision: an absent or non-string code
yields `undefined` from `getErrorCode` and either a coerced string or `undefined`
from the private helpers, and both take the same branch against a string literal.
This is line-count work for the mutation gate, not a behaviour change: no assertion
moved, no expectation weakened, nothing dropped to make a number fit. The gate
counts changed executable lines per package against main and fails above 500. With
the repository's own counting rules applied locally (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs) at
b86511f the `extension` package measured 509, which is the number CI reported
for that head; after this commit the same selector reports 499 (safeWriteText
+272 -> +266, safeWriteJson +135 -> +131). The removals are the duplicate helper
bodies and the wrapper only.
Measured with pinned node v22.23.4 on this tree: prettier --check on both files
exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 on both files exit 0 with src/eslint-suppressions
json unmodified; tsc -p src/tsconfig.json --noEmit exit 0; misc shard 119 passed /
1 skipped files and 2118 passed / 17 skipped tests; core shard 197 files and 4280
passed / 9 skipped tests; misc shard restricted to the write-protocol proof files
(5 exist in this lane) 81 passed / 4 skipped; knip and knip --production, both with
--treat-config-hints-as-errors, exit 0; knip-policy test 8 pass / 0 fail.
The services shard is unchanged from the pre-commit baseline: the same 6 failures
with and without this commit, classed from the messages themselves - 5 `EPERM:
operation not permitted, symlink ...` fixture-creation failures in services/rules
(unprivileged symlink creation in %TEMP% on this box) and 1 `DaclRestoreError` in
safeWriteText.integration.spec.ts (the saved access rights could not be restored
here). The hosted windows leg passes both files at b86511f. Local results
describe this tree only: pnpm 10.8.1 ignores the `pnpm` field in package.json
(onlyBuiltDependencies, overrides), so a resolution difference is the first
candidate if a local shard disagrees with a hosted leg.
…s refusals
First unit of the Zoo-Code-Org#1914 split plan recorded on Zoo-Code-Org#1991: this branch's increment over PR Zoo-Code-Org#1913's
head 416179d for the writer-side paths (safeWriteText.ts and its spec, fileLock.ts and
its spec, Task.ts and Task.spec.ts). guardedWrite.ts and its spec stay in the next unit,
because the tool consumes this unit's guard API rather than the reverse.
Two refusals that the refresh merge surfaced as divergent between the two copies of
safeWriteText.ts are re-added here rather than left as a silent loss, per the lead's ruling
on Zoo-Code-Org#1991 question 1. Neither is a rival design: the staging-path (dev, ino) refusal applies
the contract confirmed on Zoo-Code-Org#2356 (identity compared after canonicalisation, consumers
compare identity) to the file this write stages through, and the DACL refusal is the same
fail-closed principle ruled for _copyTargetMode in Zoo-Code-Org#1917 - publishing without knowing the
target's access rights can widen who reads the file, and logging-and-continuing was
rejected there. Both are recorded as requirements on Zoo-Code-Org#2350.
1. Staging identity: the supplied staging path and the target are compared by (dev, ino)
read with bigint stats (file identities on NTFS/ReFS exceed Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, and
a rounded number either hides an alias or rejects a valid staging file). Only ENOENT may
skip the comparison; EACCES/ELOOP/ENOTDIR means the comparison could not be made and is
itself a refusal, because otherwise an alias reaches the commit and the failure handler
unlinks the only remaining copy of the content - a failed write would delete the file it
was meant to protect. Pinned by two tests: the alias itself, and the non-ENOENT reason.
2. Access rights on win32: a target that exists but whose DACL cannot be saved, or whose
access rights cannot be read (getErrorCode != ENOENT), now yields DaclInspectionError
before anything is committed, with the phase and target path on the error. The class is
the one PR Zoo-Code-Org#1913's copy already carries; its text is taken unchanged.
Contract change, stated because tests move with it: two tests in this branch's spec asserted
the opposite behaviour - "win32 DACL failure falls back to plain rename (never fails the
write)" and the partial-dump test's assertion that the write commits. Both are replaced
with assertions of the refusal (rename never happens, the dump is still unlinked, one icacls
attempt, phase and path pinned). A third test covers the inspection refusal; it injects
platform win32 and stubs icacls, so it runs on either hosted leg rather than only on the
windows one, and the hosted windows leg passes this file.
One config line comes with this unit: knip.json declares services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts as a src
workspace entry. Without it, knip --production fails on this unit in isolation - knip does
not credit imports from files it reports as unused, and the only production consumer of the
exported safeWriteText function arrives with the next unit - and knip is a required status
check on main (Protect Main ruleset: check-translations, both platform-unit-test legs,
compile, knip, e2e-mock). With the entry declared, both knip modes and the knip-policy test
pass on this unit alone.
… the spelling of its path
The three "should preserve backups when another backup stat fails" cases pick which fs.stat call
throws by comparing the argument with a path string they built themselves, while the recovery
stats the canonical form of the same file. Those are one file and not necessarily one spelling:
resolvePublishTarget hands back whatever fs.realpath reports for the nearest existing ancestor,
and a canonical component can differ in case or 8.3 form from the spelling os.tmpdir() returned.
When it does, the comparison is false, the injected error is never thrown, and the classification
this block exists to exercise is never reached; with both backups then statable and written in
the same millisecond, the mtime sort leaves them in readdir order. Those are the two shapes the
hosted windows leg reported - `promise resolved "undefined" instead of rejecting`, and the
`[{ stale: true }, {}]` merge argument.
In production a stat of one spelling and a stat of the other are the same inode and cannot
disagree, so the double now matches the leftover's dev+ino. The claim under test is unchanged:
an unreadable leftover may not be certified stale, only ENOENT may be skipped, and either the
other backup is restored or both are preserved. The implementation is untouched - staging and
locking still follow the resolved referent (the realpath-split cases in this file), and an absent
target behind a link is still published at the canonical name (safeWriteText.spec.ts:1287).
Controls, pinned node v22.23.4 on vitest.misc.config.ts, scratch specs written then deleted:
keying on spelling with realpath forced to a flipped drive letter reproduces both hosted shapes
against the unmodified implementation - EACCES and EIO resolve instead of rejecting, and an mtime
tie restores the directory-order winner rather than the newer backup. Keying on dev+ino gives the
invariant behaviour identically with and without the flip, on all four rows including the tie
variant. The misc shard on this tree is 2125 passed | 17 skipped (2142) over 120 passed | 1
skipped files - the same denominator the windows leg reported with 3 failures.
vi.restoreAllMocks() in afterEach restores spies; it does not clear an implementation set
on the fs/promises factory mocks, so the double installed by the leftover-stat rows stayed
in place for the rest of the file. Keyed on the literal backup path that was inert, because
beforeEach mkdtemps a fresh directory per test and the captured path cannot recur. Keyed on
dev+ino it fires again as soon as the operating system hands a later test's unrelated file
the inode an earlier row captured - measured on the hosted ubuntu leg, where six unrelated
rows in this file failed and the three leftover rows passed. Five of the six carry this
injection's fingerprint; the 0o600 row is skipIf(win32) and so has no local oracle.
Restore the previous implementation in a finally, and name in the test what the matcher is
keyed on and for how long it lives.
…r order
Recovery picks the newest committed backup with
`sort((a, b) => b.mtimeMs - a.mtimeMs)` and renames the head of that list, then
unlinks the rest. mtime is the only recency signal there, so when two backups
share an exact mtime the sort decides nothing and the winner is whatever order
readdir happened to return -- and the loser of that coin flip is deleted. That
is the same evidence situation as a backup whose stat throws, which recovery
already refuses rather than treating as absent, so a tie now resolves as
uncheckable: reject, restore nothing, delete nothing, leave both copies for a
human to read. The tie is asserted with utimes rather than raced against the
clock, and a differing-mtime row rides beside it so the pair is not just a test
that two backups means reject.
Second unit of the Zoo-Code-Org#1914 split plan recorded on Zoo-Code-Org#1991: src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts and its
spec, taken unchanged from 74f5eb2, plus the one knip.json line that declares
core/tools/guardedWrite.ts as a src workspace entry.
Builds on vps2f-1914-u5b for two measured reasons. The tool's only dependency on the
previous unit is Task's cancellationGeneration field, which guardedWrite reads at six
sites; a variant carrying the writer and the tool but not Task fails tsc with eight TS2339
errors for that property (built and measured as vps2f-1914-u5c, not kept). The unit also
cannot precede the writer for the opposite reason: knip --production does not credit imports
from files it reports as unused, so a writer-only unit has to declare the writer as an entry
instead, which is the line the previous unit carries. Taking the entry line here rather than
there is what makes both units pass knip in isolation, which matters because knip is a
required status check on main.
Local build for measurement. The unit's line counts, gate results, and the reason the entry
line moves between the two units are reported with this unit's head rather than inferred.
File reads now report when content is clipped, separately from when lines are omitted.
File updates are checked against previously observed content, helping prevent unintended overwrites when files change.
Bug Fixes
Project-scoped settings writes are restricted to the selected workspace.
File operations handle symlinked paths more consistently, and interrupted recovery avoids choosing between equally recent backups.
The PR adds task-scoped file observations and guarded writes. It updates file-reading completeness and clipping metadata, adds staged and confined file-publication behavior, changes lock-key and backup-recovery handling, and confines MCP project configuration writes to their workspace.
Tasks own observation registries. Native and legacy reads record matching file versions when possible. Read results distinguish clipped lines from omitted lines, and observations are marked partial when content is incomplete or lossy-decoded.
Guarded writes serialize by path and check observations, cancellation state, workspace containment, and target identity. Tests cover create, update, edit, ordering, and cancellation behavior.
Canonical paths and lock keys src/utils/fileLock.ts, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock*.spec.ts, src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts
Lock-key and publication-target resolution follow symlinks and canonicalize missing paths through existing ancestors. File operations retain the caller’s path alias.
Staged text publication src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText*
Confined JSON writes and recovery src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson*, src/utils/__tests__/jsonFileRecovery.test.ts
safeWriteJson adds optional path confinement and resolves the target under the lock. Backup recovery rejects ties between the two newest backup timestamps.

Possibly related issues
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code issue 2148: It requests descriptor-relative publication for the guardedWrite containment and identity-check path. This PR adds that path but does not implement descriptor-relative publication.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code issue 2153: It requests cancellation-aware queued links for the guardedWrite per-path write queue. This PR adds the queue but does not implement the requested abort-signal behavior.
Possibly related PRs
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1918: Routes file-edit tools through the guardedWrite API and Task observation registry added here.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1913: Changes overlap in read observations, clipping metadata, task registry, and write confinement.
Resolve the file-publication and recovery issues before merging: concurrent path changes can overwrite unrelated files, bypass serialization, or leave saved JSON inaccessible. Permission copying can also grant an unintended group access. The new guarded-write API has additional cancellation, ordering, and observation gaps that should be corrected before integration.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: adding the guardedWrite tool built on the writer's guard API. It matches the changeset, which adds src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, its spec, and a knip.json entry. The title follows conventional commit form and is specific, though the 'U5-A, #1375' reference is internal planning jargon that a teammate may not recognize.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:371-397 now stages beside the resolved symlink target, but the stream creates the temporary file with default permissions before copying the target mode. If a private project MCP config points to a 0600 file in a shared workspace directory, a timeout update can expose its credentials through the temporary file to other local users. Before this change, staging occurred beside the original config path.
Resolution
Create staged files with restrictive permissions before writing credentials. Preserve the target permissions before publication and add a regression test for a private symlink target in a shared directory.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed confined-write path can lose files and skip rollback. - src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:379-452: If an ancestor changes after the scope check, staging and rename can replace an existing outside file. The escape handler then deletes the replacement without restoring the outside file. The added test at src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts:1252-1286 covers only an empty outside destination. - src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:188-206,481-488: If the ancestor changes after staging and the rename fails, the catch handler can still delete an unrelated outside file whose bytes match the staged bytes. It does not check whether publication succeeded. - src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:419-423,481-501: If the Windows fallback moves the target to a backup and the replacement fails, an error during the new scope recheck exits the catch before rollback. The target remains absent and the backup is not reported to the caller.
Resolution
Preserve the pre-existing destination when handling an escaped publication. Only undo a confirmed publication, and verify its staged-file identity rather than its bytes alone. Ensure scope-check errors cannot bypass rollback or cleanup, and report any retained backup. Add regression tests for these failure paths.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The new post-commit durability failure path lacks focused coverage. guardedWrite.ts:649-664 refreshes the observation after PostCommitDurabilityError and rethrows it. guardedWrite.spec.ts does not exercise that path. The safeWriteText tests cover the underlying error, but not the observation refresh or error propagation by guardedWrite.
Resolution
Add guarded-write tests that inject a post-commit durability failure and verify the refreshed token, completeness, and rethrown error. Also verify that a failed refresh preserves the prior observation and still reports the durability error.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A no-replace write can leak its staging file and directory. In safeWriteText.ts:783-789, an EBUSY or EPERM unlink failure is ignored after publication. The subsequent directory removal also fails because the file remains. The test at safeWriteText.spec.ts:1348-1359 confirms that this path reports success.
Resolution
Retry or schedule cleanup of the staged link and directory. If cleanup remains impossible, report the orphan path without implying that publication failed. Add coverage for eventual cleanup and persistent cleanup failure.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections: related issue, description, test procedure, checklist, and notes. It gives a detailed account of the merge order, line counts, the knip entry move, required status contexts, and local gate results. However, the 'Related GitHub Issue' section does not contain a 'Closes: #' link. It cites planning references (#1914, #1991, #2357) but names no approved issue for this PR. The Pre-Submission Checklist is not ticked. The description also uses sentences that are long and contain many clauses, and some terms are not in Simplified Technical English style (for example, 'the plan's partition assigns 193 + 394 = 587 lines'). The Test Procedure section gives commands and results, which is usable. The 'Get in Touch' section is empty.
Resolution
Add a 'Closes: #<issue>' line that links to an approved GitHub issue for this unit, because the template requires one. Tick the checklist items that apply after they are verified. Fill in or remove the empty 'Get in Touch' section. Shorten long sentences and remove planning-only shorthand so that reviewers without the #1914 plan can follow the description.

mutation-diff completed/failure, reason read from its log verbatim at line 1848: Mutation gate failed: extension has 1054 changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion. The metric and its base, named: 1054 is CI's cumulative count against this PR's base (main, which contains neither predecessor); this unit's own delta against its parent 8a9d5b789 is 394 (over=false, the number the split plan on #1991 predicts for U5-A); the stacked figure over the unit-chain base 416179d17de8 is 607 (over=true). All three from scripts/stryker-diff.mjs line accounting on committed trees. The plan addendum 6717425955 records that the gate reads cumulative against the PR base, so this row can only come back green once #1913 and #2357 are in main - that is the declared order main -> #1913 -> #2357 -> this unit, not a defect in this unit. mutation-diff is not in the required-context list above, so it is advisory. Disclosures, same as the parent PR: no local Stryker preflight was run for this head, and no Stryker disable directive was added anywhere on this stack.
Review state, read rather than assumed.pull_request parameters on the same ruleset require required_approving_review_count: 1 with require_code_owner_review: true, and /pulls/2359/reviews reports no reviews while /pulls/2359/review-requests lists no requested reviewers or teams; mergeable_state is blocked with mergeable: true. So what gates this PR is one approving review that includes a code owner - a human - and no check. The two platform legs, knip, compile, e2e-mock and check-translations are done.
Local gates on this committed tree, pinned node v22.23.4 (recorded in the PR body and repeated here for the record): prettier --check clean on the three touched files; eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 core/tools/guardedWrite.ts core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts exit 0 with no suppression count increase; tsc -p src/tsconfig.json --noEmit exit 0; knip --treat-config-hints-as-errors and knip --production exit 0 with empty output; node --test scripts/knip-policy.test.mjs 8/8; guardedWrite.spec.ts under vitest.core.config.ts 62 passed (62); full core --coverage 198 files, 4344 passed | 9 skipped; full misc --coverage 120 passed | 1 skipped files, 2127 passed | 17 skipped tests. Core and unit exit 1 locally only on two named environmental classes: services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts failing 5 rows at its own fs.symlink setup with EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink (proved pre-existing at the parent head), and EnvironmentTeardownError: [vitest-worker]: Closing rpc while "onUserConsoleLog" was pending originating in core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts only inside a full-shard concurrent run - that file run alone is 339 passed (339) with zero such errors, twice. Both platform legs are green on this head, so neither class reproduced on the runners.

assertion.
- Around line 983-985: Update the test around p1 and p2 so the first write
remains pending while the second write is awaited; assert the second completes
before releasing the first, then clean up and retain the existing write-count
assertion.
Review comments at @src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts:

that full replacement is denied and the prior complete observation is retained.
Review comments at @src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:
- Around line 412-413: Update the ancestor stat lookup in guardedWrite to treat
only ENOENT as a missing directory; propagate EIO, EACCES, and all other errors
so failed identity checks cannot be silently omitted.
- Line 573: Update the edit callers and the guarded write flow around
task.observationRegistry.get(absolutePath) to pass the version used to build
content. Under the publish lock, compare the current version with that supplied
base version and reject publishing when they differ, so an edit cannot overwrite
changes published since its content was prepared.
- Line 167: Ensure the authorized parent directory exists before `withFileLock`
acquires the lock for `absolutePath`, while preserving the existing containment
checks; keep `safeWriteText`’s nested-directory creation behavior intact. Add a
real-filesystem test that verifies a write succeeds when nested parent
directories are initially missing.
- Around line 558-560: The verifyTarget check currently runs before enqueue,
allowing asynchronous containment checks to finish out of submission order. Move
verifyTarget into the ordered enqueue callback for absolutePath so each update
verifies containment in submission order before publishing, without weakening
the check.
- Around line 654-660: In the PostCommitDurabilityError path, capture the
committed version token with computeVersionToken while the original lock is
still held, then use that captured token when updating task.observationRegistry
after lock release. Avoid refreshing from the path after release, and preserve
propagation of the durability error.
- Around line 589-596: Update the guarded write flow around replaceIfVersion so
that if the edit commits but directory fsync fails, the committed token is
captured under the lock and used to refresh the task’s observation without
marking an incomplete observation as complete. Rethrow the original durability
error after refreshing, and preserve the existing stale-write checks.
- Line 679: Update the completeness argument passed to
task.observationRegistry.observe so staysPartial always keeps the observation
partial, even when completeOverride is true; apply the override only when the
edit is not partial.
- Line 178: In both guards, recheck cancellation after `verifyTarget` resolves
and before calling `safeWriteText`; stop the write if cancellation occurred,
preserving the existing cancellation behavior.
Review comments at @src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts:
- Around line 248-250: Update the partial-reread verification around
`preReadStats` and `postReadStats` so a failed stat or differing version tokens
invalidates the prior complete observation. Reuse the existing observation
invalidation mechanism, ensuring `guardedWrite` cannot rely on stale
verification after an unverified reread.

test comment: describe DACL restoration as best-effort and state that a restore
failure does not fail the write. Cite the actual unit test, “win32 DACL: dump is

throws DaclRestoreError.
Review comments at @src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts:
- Around line 780-785: Update the safeWriteText test for failed DACL restoration
to assert that the write reports a post-commit error after the rename; retain
the existing rename and cleanup checks.
- Line 94: Add acceptance cases to the success tests that use the fs.lstat mock,
verifying writes succeed with distinct bigint identities and when the target is
missing; keep the existing rejection coverage unchanged.
Review comments at @src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:
- Around line 801-803: Update safeWriteText’s directory-sync flow to sync each
containing directory needed to persist newly created nested parents before
reporting success. Preserve the existing fsync behavior for the target’s
immediate parent, and ensure ancestor syncing covers the new parent entries
without changing behavior when no parents were created.
- Around line 9-13: Update the `backup` option documentation to describe copying
the existing target before publication and attempting to remove that copy after
publication or on failure. Do not promise rollback or restoration; clarify that
a post-commit error may leave the new content at the target and that the default
skips the copy.
- Line 550: Update the publication flow around targetMode in safeWriteText so
replacing an existing target preserves its group ownership, including when the
staging file belongs to a different group. Apply the target group before
publication; if preservation cannot be ensured, refuse the replacement rather
than publishing with changed group access.
- Around line 708-709: Update the backup-copy flow using fs.copyFile and
fs.chmod so backupPath is created with private permissions before any target
bytes are written, and remains private throughout the copy. Establish a copy
method that guarantees this behavior on Linux while preserving the existing
backup handling and error safeguards.
- Around line 822-824: Update the staging flow around _restoreDaclWindows so a
restrictive Windows DACL is established on the staging file before any content
is written; do not rely on POSIX mode settings or the later directory DACL
restoration to protect staged content.
- Around line 684-685: Update the safeWriteText flow to revalidate pinned
ancestors after the backup completes and immediately before commit, using the
existing ancestor-pinning checks. Ensure the commit proceeds only if the target
remains within its authorized location.
- Around line 675-676: Preserve the authorized ancestor’s resolved location when
recording authorization, then compare the current resolvedDir against that
recorded location here instead of resolving expected.dir again. Retain the
existing ancestor identity check.
- Around line 590-593: The staging file can be replaced with a symlink between
validation and publication, allowing `fchmodSync` to affect its referent and the
symlink to be published. In the `tempPath` commit flow, prevent path
substitution through both chmod and publication; ensure those steps apply only
to the originally validated staged file, using an approach supported by the
existing filesystem safeguards.
- Around line 569-572: Update the guarded staging-write path around the
`writeSync` loop and `fsyncSync` to use asynchronous I/O, awaiting writes until
the entire buffer is handled and awaiting the flush before proceeding. Preserve
short-write handling and the existing lock and error safeguards.
- Around line 878-879: Update backup cleanup in safeWriteText to stop silently
swallowing unlink failures: when cleanup fails during commit or durability error
handling, report the backup path and cleanup error while preserving the original
error as primary. Keep the backup path available for that report before clearing
backupPath.
- Line 789: Update safeWriteText cleanup after publishing via fs.link to retry
unlinking tempPath when the initial cleanup fails; if cleanup still fails,
report the orphaned staging path while preserving the successful published
status.
- Line 780: Replace the unconditional fs.rename publication of tempPath to
targetPath with a race-safe strategy that preserves or rejects edits made after
the version check; establish that the chosen filesystem operation prevents an
intervening editor save from being overwritten, since a second stat followed by
rename is insufficient. If that guarantee cannot be established, reject the
write without replacing the target.
- Around line 312-314: Update the Windows safe-write flow around `icacls
/restore` to apply the saved DACL restrictions before publishing the
replacement; if restoration fails, do not report success or delete the saved
DACL, and retain the recovery information.
- Around line 425-432: Update the lock-key inspection flow around realpath and
readlink so inspection errors that prevent determining the write target are
propagated instead of falling back to a lock for the alias. Preserve support for
absent files and dangling links, and keep the existing canonicalDirKey behavior
when inspection establishes that the path is not a link.

- Line 86: Update the realpath error handling in the lock-key resolution flow so
transient inspection failures propagate instead of returning an unverified
absoluteFilePath; preserve fallback behavior for the explicitly handled
missing-path errors.
- Line 66: Update the relative-link resolution in the fallback walker around
linkCursor so each target is resolved from the canonical parent directory, not
the symlinked path. Ensure the normal link-resolution path uses the same
canonical-parent rule so callers through a link and its referent derive the same
lock key.
- Around line 162-166: Revalidate the lock key in the flow around
acquireFileLock before invoking operation; if the directory symlink changed
during acquisition, retry lock acquisition or reject before the callback runs.
Preserve the existing operation flow when the key is unchanged.
Review comments at @src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:
- Around line 601-602: Correct the comment for _flushFileToDisk to describe
flushing the fully written staged file to storage before it is committed; do not
describe syncing the directory after commit.
- Around line 594-598: Update the chmod failure handling in the staged-file
publication flow so a failed mode change prevents the replacement from being
published. Preserve the existing mode-setting behavior when chmod succeeds, and
ensure the failure path aborts publication rather than leaving the staged file
with broader permissions.
- Line 397: Update the staging flow around _copyTargetMode to open and retain a
writable handle before applying the target’s restrictive mode, then use that
handle for the pre-commit sync instead of having _flushFileToDisk reopen the
staged file with r+. Ensure the handle is properly closed after syncing.
- Line 397: Update the staging and publication flow around _copyTargetMode so
copying the target’s group-write permissions cannot grant access to a different
group: preserve the target’s group on the staged file before applying those
permissions, or fail the write if ownership cannot be preserved. Retain the
existing safeguards and avoid publishing the file with mismatched group
ownership.
- Around line 192-203: Update the escaped-file cleanup around publishedPath and
expectedBytes so it verifies the file is still the specific publication made by
this write, rather than relying on matching bytes and stats captured during
cleanup. Preserve or establish a reliable publication identity and validate it
immediately before unlinking; if that identity cannot be confirmed, leave the
file untouched.
- Around line 196-198: Update the cleanup guard around actualBytes and
publishedPath so a read failure on a write-only publication does not prevent
escape cleanup. Establish a way to verify that the file is still the publication
before removing it, and preserve the safeguard against deleting a peer’s
replacement.
- Around line 420-421: Update both recovery scans in the safe-write flow to
derive the backup basename from the referent path rather than the symlink path,
so recovery finds the committed JSON after an interrupted EPERM fallback. Keep
the backup creation and rename flow around actualTempBackupFilePath unchanged.
- Line 298: Update the write flow around resolvePublishTarget to recover a
symlink referent’s backup under its lock before strict resolution rejects the
alias. Preserve confinement checks and continue rejecting genuinely dangling
links.
- Around line 444-447: Update both post-publication checks in the safe-write
flow to pass the canonical root captured during initial authorization to
_assertWithinScope, rather than re-resolving confinementRoot after publication;
retain the published-path resolution. Add a test that replaces the workspace
root with a symlink after the in-lock check and verifies the write is rejected.
- Around line 481-488: Update the escape-handling flow around _assertWithinScope
and undoEscapedPublish so a failed replacement rename still restores the backup
and removes the staged file before the escape error is reported. Preserve the
original escape error while ensuring rollback and cleanup complete safely.
- Line 407: Replace the fs.rename publication step with a method that prevents a
swapped ancestor from redirecting publication outside the confined target;
establish that the chosen method preserves existing safeguards and leaves any
pre-existing outside file untouched. Add a regression test that swaps an
ancestor during publication while an outside file already exists.
- Around line 202-206: Replace the stat-then-unlink cleanup for publishedPath
with a filesystem-safe approach that ensures deletion applies only to the file
this operation created, even if a peer replaces the path after the ownership
check. Establish and use a mechanism supported by the existing code that closes
this check-to-delete race; do not rely on another stat immediately before
unlinking.
- Around line 67-70: Update the confineTo documentation in safeWriteJson to
remove the claim that a StagingPathError guard prevents writes after an ancestor
swap. Document that staging may rename over an existing file outside the
declared scope and that the post-commit cleanup cannot restore the replaced
file.
- Around line 304-306: In the retry loop around resolveLockKey, verify that the
captured resolvedTargetPath still corresponds to the held lock before recovery
or merge; if it does not, retry or reject the publish rather than proceeding
under a mismatched lock.
---
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add guarded-write tests that inject a post-commit durability failure and verify
the refreshed token, completeness, and rethrown error. Also verify that a failed
refresh preserves the prior observation and still reports the durability error.
- Security Boundaries:
Create staged files with restrictive permissions before writing credentials.
Preserve the target permissions before publication and add a regression test for
a private symlink target in a shared directory.
- Persistence Integrity:
Preserve the pre-existing destination when handling an escaped publication. Only
undo a confirmed publication, and verify its staged-file identity rather than
its bytes alone. Ensure scope-check errors cannot bypass rollback or cleanup,
and report any retained backup. Add regression tests for these failure paths.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Retry or schedule cleanup of the staged link and directory. If cleanup remains
impossible, report the orphan path without implying that publication failed. Add
coverage for eventual cleanup and persistent cleanup failure.

### Typed test files
New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:
- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

Preserve peer files during escape cleanup.
If a peer replaces the escaped file with a different file containing identical JSON, both stats describe the peer’s file and cleanup deletes it. Use a cleanup protocol that identifies this write’s publication and does not unlink a replacement.

Allow escape cleanup for write-only files.

Keep a writable handle for the pre-commit sync.
When a non-root process replaces a 0o444 or 0o400 target, the copied mode prevents _flushFileToDisk from reopening the staged file with r+. The write logs the error and commits without syncing the data, which can be lost after a power failure. Open the handle before copying the mode.

Prevent publication through a swapped ancestor.
If an ancestor changes after the confinement check, the rename can replace an existing outside file. undoEscapedPublish then removes the replacement, but cannot restore the original. Use a publication method that prevents ancestor redirection, and test the swap with an existing outside file.

Replace the fs.rename publication step with a method that prevents a swapped
ancestor from redirecting publication outside the confined target; establish
that the chosen method preserves existing safeguards and leaves any pre-existing
outside file untouched. Add a regression test that swaps an ancestor during
publication while an outside file already exists.

Preserve rollback and cleanup before reporting an escape.
If an ancestor is swapped outside the scope and the EPERM fallback’s replacement rename fails, this throw skips rollback and cleanup. The outside target remains missing, and the .new file retains the rejected payload. Safely restore the backup and remove the staged file before reporting the escape.

Add a recovery test alongside the existing `recoverInterruptedReplacement` cases
with three backups whose mtimes are 100, 100, and 200. Assert recovery restores
the content from the backup at 200 and removes both backups tied at 100,
preserving recovery when older backups share an mtime.

Extend the lock-key test fixture so the resolved referent can change during lock
acquisition; assert that the original lock is released and the new lock acquired
before merging, and verify the published result. Also cover repeated retargeting
that rejects without publishing, keeping assertions focused on observable
behavior.

The three "preserve backups when another backup stat fails with ENOENT/
EACCES/EIO" rows went red on the windows platform-unit shard (Zoo-Code-Org#1914 CI run
42448302148 job 128631851822): the double compared the stat target against
os.tmpdir()'s spelling while the writer stats the canonical form of the same
file - on windows realpath spells it differently - so the injection missed,
stat succeeded, and the write resolved instead of rejecting (the failure
reads: 'promise resolved "undefined" instead of rejecting' at
safeWriteJson.test.ts:675 on run 42461215177 job 128670729075).
This adopts Zoo-Code-Org#2359's (025fb7d) hardened version of the test file, which keys
the injection on the leftover's inode and restores the fs.stat implementation
after the row (inode recycling otherwise rejects later tests). Test-only:
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts is byte-identical between 74f5eb2 and 025fb7d,
so the json implementation stays at this branch's pin and json + its specs
still travel as one generation - with the pair windows-proven: 025fb7d's
windows platform-unit passed with this exact test file against the identical
implementation (run 42455872567 job 128654644966). Copy source named:
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts from 025fb7d (Zoo-Code-Org#2359 head).
Conflict resolutions with named sources (auditable after the fact):
- src/eslint-suppressions.json: taken from main unchanged; no prune was
carried across the merge (eslint-verify is a separate gate step).
- The safeWriteJson set (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts,
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts,
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts,
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts) and the whole
safeWriteText set (src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts + spec +
integration spec): pinned together at the reconciled U5 PR head
refs/pull/1914 (74f5eb2), which already carries main's Zoo-Code-Org#2297
trace/recovery work that main-side taskMessages.ts consumes. They must
travel as one generation: an earlier pass of this merge kept the U5 json
set but paired it with this branch's era safeWriteText, and CI on
windows-latest failed the misc shard in 15 tests (safeWriteJson.test
backup-preservation rows and the whole subprocess-interruption suite)
while ubuntu passed - era safeWriteText carries windows-only ACL/publish
branches that re-route the U5 specs' fs-mock expectations and shift the
interruption harness's kill timing. Generation pairing, not logic:
the reason lines are mock-call argument mismatches only.
- src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts: redone as an explicit
three-way merge (branch head 2e00da1 x shared base 3ee042d x main
73931fe), which applies cleanly; the main-side delta is +71 bytes. The
first pass's auto-merge silently dropped the guarded-save signature region
(callers pass 9 args while the merged saveChanges accepted 8), which is why
the redo was done against the named bases rather than trusting auto-merge.
- src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts: main's
Zoo-Code-Org#2309-rewritten spec is the base; U8's guarded-save semantics are grafted
onto it (makeTaskDouble extended to carry cwd + a real ObservationRegistry,
guarded-publish seed observations, CAS-rollback stat/token pins, and the
new "open() waits for a finalization in flight" test rewritten onto main's
shared test-utils/vscode doubles, so no suppression count moves). The
guarded-publish groups assert the mocked safeWriteText's call arguments,
so their expected option name follows the pinned generation:
"retainedTarget: true" -> "backup: true" (43 sites across this spec and
guardedWrite.spec, identical arguments and counts otherwise).
- The guarded-write cluster (guardedWrite.spec, observationRegistry.ts +
spec, ReadFileTool.ts + readFileTool.spec, indentation-reader.ts + both
specs, ApplyDiffTool/ApplyPatchTool/EditFileTool/EditTool/SearchReplaceTool/
WriteToFileTool + execute/edit/failureReporting/guardedWrite specs) stays
at this branch's own era content from 2e00da1. Generation probe:
guardedWrite exists in three incompatible generations across the lineage
heads (cancellationGeneration on the U5 heads, GuardStaleVersionError on
this head, canonicalizeForApproval on the U7 head); pairing this branch's
DiffViewProvider and tool callers with a foreign generation fails to
typecheck, so the cluster was kept generation-consistent with its own
consumers.
- src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts keeps this branch's public surface
(GuardStaleVersionError compare-and-swap is diff-view saveChanges'
contract) and is adapted to the pinned file-safety generation in two
ways: the publish option is now spelled "backup" (the lineage name for
the same copy-before-rename/unlink-after contract) at both call sites,
and canonicalDirKey + resolveLinkPathLockKey - which the lineage head
never exported - are carried verbatim as module-local helpers here,
this file being their only consumer. Zoo-Code-Org#2357's review-fix generation
(25a1ad6) is deliberately not smuggled in here; converging
guardedWrite and safeWriteText onto it is a code-owner semantic-merge
decision for Zoo-Code-Org#1914/Zoo-Code-Org#2357. The adaptation is shaped so that a queue-time
resolution taking main's evolved safeWriteText still typechecks: this
file only needs backup, resolveLockKey, resolvePublishTarget and
PostCommitDurabilityError, all present in that generation.
- src/core/task/Task.ts auto-merged (main-side edits and U8 hunks in
disjoint regions); accepted after typecheck.
- eslint-suppressions.json verification pass proved exactly one reduction
(core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts no-explicit-any 96 -> 94,
because this branch's copy of that file is cleaner than main's), applied
by hand to main's formatting rather than carrying the plugin's whole-file
prune rewrite across the merge. No count increased; a full-tree lint
(--max-warnings=0) passes on this commit.
- Teardown-tail deadlock fix (addresses the open major review finding on this
PR): revertChanges' tail ran this.reset() INSIDE the teardown claim while
open() serializes with that claim, and reset() joins the session-start
reservation main's Zoo-Code-Org#2309 introduced - so reset -> reservation -> open ->
teardownInFlight -> the tail's own finalization formed a wait cycle when an
open() began while the tail was still running. The tail now calls
finalizeSessionFromTeardownTail(), the same finalization without the
reservation join (the reservation it would join is itself waiting on this
pass). A regression test drives exactly that interleaving (revertChanges +
overlapping open() with the tail gated) and asserts both settle; the
companion ownership assertion in the "revert already owns the teardown"
test was updated to the fixed ordering: the owning pass' finalization now
settles without deferral, so its own-diff-view close happens exactly once
from the owner while the joined save cleanup still restores no tabs.
- src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts additionally adopted from 025fb7d
(Zoo-Code-Org#2359 head, test-only hardening): the "preserve backups when another backup
stat fails with ENOENT/EACCES/EIO" rows failed on the windows platform-unit
shard because the double keyed the stat injection on os.tmpdir()'s spelling
while the writer stats the canonical form of the same file (windows realpath
spells them differently; reason line read from run 42461215177 job
128670729075: 'promise resolved "undefined" instead of rejecting' at
safeWriteJson.test.ts:675 - the same rows are red on Zoo-Code-Org#1914's own head
74f5eb2, run 42448302148 job 128631851822). src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts is
byte-identical between 74f5eb2 and 025fb7d, so this is the same
generation's json paired with its windows-proven test file (025fb7d's
windows platform-unit passed this test against the identical implementation,
run 42455872567 job 128654644966), and the pairing rule stands untouched:
json + its specs still travel together as one generation, now keyed on inode
instead of path spelling.
Conflict set resolved per the stack's settled copy sources; every copy source
named per file group:
- src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts + src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts +
.lockKey.spec.ts + .interruption.test.ts: copy source = settled Zoo-Code-Org#1916 head
711ada7 (which itself pins the json quartet at
74f5eb2, the Zoo-Code-Org#1914 head). Main-side taskMessages.ts consumes
SafeWriteJsonTraceStage + the trace option, which only this json generation
provides; the era json predates main's Zoo-Code-Org#2297 and fails tsc against it.
- src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts + spec + integration spec: same copy
source (the same 74f5eb2 pin). json and text travel as one generation.
- src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts + src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts:
copy source = 711ada7 - the U8-era guardedWrite surface adapted to the pinned
generation: publish calls carry backup: true, resolveLinkPathLockKey and
canonicalDirKey are module-local helpers, and the spec's mock arguments spell
backup: true where the era spelled retainedTarget: true (31 sites; the 12
DiffViewProvider.spec sites travel with that file's copy below).
- src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts + __tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts:
copy source = 711ada7 in full. This is the era x 3ee042d x main 3-way
resolution Zoo-Code-Org#1916 carries, and it includes the teardown-tail deadlock fix:
revertChanges' tail finalizes via finalizeSessionFromTeardownTail() - the same
finalization minus the session-start join, because the reservation that join
would wait on is itself waiting on this pass (reset -> reservation -> open ->
teardownInFlight -> the tail -> reset would never settle). The fix is verified
IN THIS TREE, not inherited silently: its regression test "revertChanges' tail
does not deadlock when open() starts during the pass" runs in this branch's
misc shard gate, together with the companion ownership assertion the fix owes.
- src/eslint-suppressions.json: main's counts first (the theirs side); u6-only
file entries kept only where main carries none (25 entries); then eslint
verify with --prune-suppressions on the merged tree. No prune carried across
the merge: shared-file counts restart from main and only eslint may lower them.
Generation-pairing rule enforced by this resolution (adopted as a rule by the
stack lead; the four-generation map and the discriminator experiment are posted
on Zoo-Code-Org#2350 where the convergence review reads them): json plus its specs and text
plus its specs travel as ONE generation, always. The evidence behind it: on
Zoo-Code-Org#1916 an era-text x 74f5-json chimera passed tsc --noEmit, every ubuntu leg, and
every local misc shard, and failed only on the windows platform-unit misc shard
(15 rows in the era windows-only ACL/backup-stat and interruption kill-timing
branches, run 42459507387 job 128665547657) - the shape of a red a reviewer
would attribute to the change in the diff rather than to the pairing.
Auto-merged Task.ts accepted after review: same two-lineage splice Zoo-Code-Org#1916 merged
(era-side hunks and main's Zoo-Code-Org#2297 hunks are disjoint regions).
- src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts additionally adopted from 025fb7d
(Zoo-Code-Org#2359 head, test-only hardening, keyed on inode not path spelling): the
windows platform-unit rows that motivated it are the same on any tree
carrying 74f5eb2's json test (reason lines read from runs 42461215177
128670729075 and 42448302148 128631851822). src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts is
byte-identical between the two refs, so json + its specs still travel as one
generation - this branch adopts the generation's windows-proven test file
(025fb7d windows platform-unit green with this file against the identical
implementation, run 42455872567 job 128654644966), matching Zoo-Code-Org#1914/Zoo-Code-Org#1916
byte-for-byte so the stack carries one copy of this test.
