This PR ships src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts and its specs - the guarded text
publish primitive (staged write under a private per-write staging directory, mode/gid capture
from the target, win32 DACL save/restore around the commit rename, fsync of file and
directory, typed post-commit errors and isPublishCommittedError).
It does not yet re-plumb safeWriteJson. While this branch was open, upstream main
landed src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts, the EPERM two-step fallback and the flush step on
that same function. Delegating safeWriteJson onto the text module would have rewritten
main's shipped json protocol a second time, so this branch now leaves src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts as main's implementation.
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts and src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts in this PR are byte-identical to main 73931fe8be
(git diff --name-only 73931fe8be -- <path> is empty for all three at head 1f8ae7f).
The branch's earlier json-delegation version of safeWriteJson.ts (228 lines that only
re-exported the text module) is dropped, not spliced into main's file.
src/utils/fileLock.ts is a composition: main's FileLockOptions
({ waitForStaleLock, immediate }), the json-lock-wait trace call, the recovery
constants and the options-driven retry blocks, plus this branch's resolveRealPath
import and its exported resolveFileLockPath, which both call sites now use. Without
that helper the lock key comes from the unresolved path where the workspace path is a
junction or symlink.
src/services/code-index/cache-manager.ts is the only consumer edit: it read isPublishCommittedError from ../../utils/safeWriteJson; main's safeWriteJson does
not export it, so that import now points at ../../services/file-safety/safeWriteText. DiffViewProvider already imported it from there.
Six json-spec tests re-pointed, not deleted
The merge takes main's safeWriteJson.test.ts (28 titles) whole. Six titles that existed
only on this branch were re-pointed at safeWriteText and appended to src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts with their titles verbatim:
does not treat the staged path as a leftover when the commit landed but the DACL restore failed - safeWriteText(target, "data", { platform: "win32", execFileRunner }) with only
the /restore invocation failing; asserts DaclRestoreError, isPublishCommittedError(caught) === true, and that no fs.unlink names the staged path
the commit rename consumed.
surfaces a stat failure other than ENOENT instead of staging with the default mode - statSync throws EIO; asserts rejects.toBe(eio) and that fsSync.openSync and fs.rename were never called (the existing EACCES test pins the classification, not this
ordering half).
does not copy the target before the commit: the rename is already atomic - asserts no fs.copyFile, exactly one fs.rename onto the target, no unlink.
a failed publish leaves the target in place because the backup is a copy - fs.rename
rejects once on linux; asserts rejects.toBe(renameFailure), no rename with the target
as source, exactly one attempt, no copyFile.
propagates the publish failure and removes the staged .new_ file - caller-supplied tempPath; asserts the primary error propagates and an fs.unlink names that staged path.
stages the temp file beside the symlink referent and commits onto it - asserts the
staged openSync paths sit under path.dirname of the resolved referent and not under
the alias's directory, and the rename lands on the referent.
None of the six asserts something only safeWriteJson can do - the strings "Rename from
temp to final failed" and "Primary rename failed" appear only inside the old json spec as
injected fs.rename fixtures - and each one pins a half that the existing text-spec tests
do not. There is therefore no test-side evidence for a separate json/text reconciliation
unit; if one is wanted later it would be a design decision, not a test demand.
prettier over the 291-path merge set: 272 parseable paths checked in 3 batches; 2 files
reformatted (this spec and fileLock.ts) and then clean; 19 present paths have no
prettier parser (.gitignore, .png) and are counted as not run; 0 merge-set paths absent.
src/eslint-suppressions.json is byte-identical to main's blob: 265 entries / 2870 total
counts, and no entry in the merged tree exceeds main's count for it.
Survivor arithmetic over the 81 test paths either parent touched: 102 branch-added titles
and 304 main-added titles relative to the merge base; 0 missing from the merged tree; 6
relocated - exactly the six json-spec titles above, now in safeWriteText.spec.ts. Nothing
dropped.
Not run locally: full src vitest, packages/* lanes, apps/vscode-e2e, pnpm lifecycle:model-check (no lifecycle-model or scheduler files in this merge set), and
local Stryker - unrunnable in this lane (spawnSync of .bin\stryker returns ENOENT), so
mutation evidence here is CI's mutation-diff job only.
Lineage note for the reviewer
#1408 carries a 469-line src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts (with an ENOENT fast
path in backup cleanup); this branch carries an 819-line implementation of the same path from
merge base bb6cbee59. They are different implementations of one path, so whichever lands
second has to reconcile that file. Main has no safeWriteText.ts yet, which is why this
merge does not conflict on it.
The src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts lineage: three blobs, one file
Added 2026-11-07 because the same module exists in three shapes across this campaign and main has none of it, so whichever order these land in decides what main's file is. Everything in the table was measured, not inferred: each blob was read out of its own tree with git show <head>:<path>, and the consumer counts come from git grep restricted to non-spec files in that same tree. upstream/main is 73931fe8be253b93ec11103a0672c615e849f895, the commit the three merges here were rehearsed against.
Recommendation, offered as a recommendation and not as a ruling: main should take this PR's 819-line blob as the file, and #1405's refusal wiring (refuseSymlinkTarget, _refuseSymlinkedAncestors, the resolution-ordered lock target, the refusal checks) should ride on top of it as additive deltas, which is the direction the #1405 merge commit already went in for the json module. Two measured reasons. First, this blob is the only one whose extra types already have production consumers - isPublishCommittedError, PublishNotDurableError and DaclRestoreError are imported by DiffViewProvider.ts and cache-manager.ts here - so landing the narrower blobs first strands those imports and forces the types back in afterwards. Second, the knip evidence: this head passes pnpm knip:production (exit 0, confirmed locally and its CI knip check is success) precisely because two production files import the module, whereas #1405's head fails it, and #1408's tree wires the module only through core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, a file its own knip.json excludes from analysis - so #1408's shape would hand main the same "unused in production" failure #1405 had and need the same entry declaration.
What each order leaves behind. Taking #1395 first (recommended): main gets the widest surface and the largest spec, and #1405 must re-apply its refusal wiring onto an 819-line body and re-point the call sites of the 21 branch-only titles again - exactly the re-pointing the #1405 merge commit did - plus the knip.json entry statement is unnecessary here and would only be needed if the module lost its production importers. Taking #1408's blob first: main gains flushPendingBackupRemovals, which neither other blob exports, but then has to grow the five DACL/durability/authorization names this blob carries and re-merge an 89-title spec onto a file whose internals differ, and it inherits the knip situation above. Taking #1405's blob first: main gets the narrowest file (3 exports) and drops flushPendingBackupRemovals and all five of this blob's error/authorization names, so the two consumers measured above have nothing to import and the 819-line body arrives later as an expansion of a file that is already wired - the ordering with the most rework.
Stated plainly: the choice is which blob is main's file, and the recommendation is this one; the alternatives are named with what each leaves behind so a maintainer can pick differently without re-measuring.
Editor and JSON saves now publish complete file contents, reducing the risk of partial writes.
Saving through a symbolic link updates its target while preserving existing permissions; new files receive standard permissions.
Editor saves reject access failures on existing files while still allowing missing files to be created.
Editor saves are blocked when a link’s target escapes the authorized working directory.
Failed saves clean up temporary files and preserve existing content where possible.
On Windows, saves retry certain file-access errors. Permission-restoration failures may be reported after new content is published.
A save may report a durability error after publishing if the system cannot confirm the change is durable.
File locks recognize symbolic-link aliases, preventing concurrent writes through different paths to the same file.
The change adds safeWriteText for staged file publication and routes editor direct saves and JSON writes through it. It resolves symlink targets, checks authorized roots, handles permissions and platform-specific durability, and canonicalizes file-lock paths. Cache clearing also handles errors raised after a write has committed.

Summary
Target resolution and staging src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts
Atomic publication and platform handling src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.integration.spec.ts
Publishes staged files by rename, handles Windows DACL operations and POSIX directory durability, and reports certain errors after commit. Tests cover retries, cleanup, commit errors, and real-filesystem writes.
Canonical paths and file locks src/utils/WorkspacePathResolver.ts, src/utils/fileLock.ts, src/utils/__tests__/WorkspacePathResolver.spec.ts, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.spec.ts
Adds optional case folding to resolveRealPath and resolves file-lock paths canonically without case folding. Tests cover case preservation, symlink aliases, and lock serialization.
Resolves the canonical target, stages JSON beside it, and delegates publication to safeWriteText. Tests cover permissions, symlink writers, and publish failures. Suppression counts decrease for the test and implementation files.
Editor saves and cache clearing src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts, src/services/code-index/cache-manager.ts, src/services/code-index/__tests__/cache-manager.spec.ts
Checks target authorization and write access before routing saveDirectly through safeWriteText. Cache clearing handles committed-write errors by clearing in-memory hashes and logging a warning.
Symlink races can redirect writes or bypass workspace confinement, and a failed save can delete caller-owned staged content. Resolve these risks before merging.

Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior staging-directory regression is covered. safeWriteText.spec.ts:2001-2024 forces fsSync.mkdirSync to throw both EACCES and ENOSPC, verifies the exact error, and verifies that openSync and rename are not called. The changed publish, symlink, authorization, durability, DACL, cleanup, lock, JSON, editor, and path-resolution behaviors also have focused tests, including real-filesystem integration coverage. No durable visible UI change requires a Playwright component snapshot. Prior failure addressed: The current focused suite adds staging directory creation failure tests at safeWriteText.spec.ts:2001-2024 for EACCES and ENOSPC, with exact-error, no-open, and no-rename assertions.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path shows a listener, watcher, timer, task, or provider leak. safeWriteText closes file and directory descriptors in finally blocks (lines 562-577, 597-605, 701-706), awaits and completes rename retry timers (683-694), and cleans staging, temporary, and DACL artifacts on success and failure (750-802). safeWriteJson releases its advisory lock in finally (184-190). The changed saveDirectly path adds no persistent resource. The stream listener setup in _streamDataToFile is unchanged from the base revision.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(file-safety): guarded text publish module + specs (A4, #1375)" matches the main change. The PR adds the safeWriteText atomic text-publish module with its specs, and the title names that module directly. The title also refers to the file-safety series. The title does not mention the safeWriteJson refactor or the DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly routing, which are secondary changes. The title also uses the phrase "guarded" and the "A4, #1375" tag, which add some noise, but the title remains accurate and specific.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The new authorized-root check is path-based and has a TOCTOU gap. safeWriteText validates the target at lines 420-455, then creates dirPath with fs.mkdir(..., { recursive: true }) at lines 469-472 and later renames through that path. If a concurrent process replaces an approved workspace parent with a symlink to /outside after validation, staging and the final rename follow the new symlink and publish outside the authorized root. saveDirectly has the same gap between its pre-check and createDirectoriesForFile at lines 1163-1173. This bypasses the new workspace allowlist for an approved in-root path.
Resolution
Make authorization and publication race-resistant. Open or retain directory handles for the authorized root and target parent with symlink traversal disabled, create the staging directory through those handles, and perform the final rename relative to the verified parent handle. At minimum, reject or revalidate every parent component immediately before publication; do not rely on string-path realpath checks followed by path-based mkdir and rename.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The cache-manager case is fixed, but another changed safeWriteJson path still loses state on a post-commit error. safeWriteText renames the staged file before it reports PublishNotDurableError (safeWriteText.ts:678-712, 804-809). safeWriteJson rethrows that error (safeWriteJson.ts:148-183). TaskHistoryStore.writeTaskFile updates its written value during the merge, but upsertCore updates its in-memory cache only after writeTaskFile resolves (TaskHistoryStore.ts:865-881, 239-253). If the directory fsync fails after rename, disk contains the new history item while the cache retains the old item. A later task-history save or administrative repair can use that stale state and overwrite or omit persisted fields.
Resolution
Handle PublishNotDurableError and DaclRestoreError as committed writes in every safeWriteJson consumer with in-memory state. In TaskHistoryStore.writeTaskFile and its callers, retain the merged written value, update the cache before propagating the post-commit error, and prevent a retry from writing stale content. Apply the same policy to saveTaskMessages/saveApiMessages callers and any MCP or configuration state that retains the written object. Add failure-injection tests that fail the directory fsync after rename, verify the target contains the new data, verify in-memory state is updated, and verify a subsequent save cannot restore stale data.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description departs from the required template. It has no 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #' line. It also lacks the 'Test Procedure' section and the 'Pre-Submission Checklist'. The 'Visual Snapshots', 'Videos', 'Documentation Updates', 'Additional Notes', and 'Get in Touch' sections are absent. The 'Description' content is substantive. It explains what the PR ships, why safeWriteJson was not re-plumbed, the six relocated tests, and the gate evidence. It also links issues #1391 and #1991 only in the objectives, not as a Closes reference. The description also includes a long lineage discussion and a recommendation about main's file choice. That content belongs in review comments, not the PR body. The template's 'Description' section should summarize the 'how' and reviewer checks. Much of the text gives test evidence and history rather than the implementation summary.
Resolution
Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #<number>' line that links an approved issue. Add a 'Test Procedure' section with the commands run and how reviewers can repeat them. Complete the 'Pre-Submission Checklist' and mark each item that applies. Add 'Documentation Updates' and 'Get in Touch' sections, and answer each one. Move the three-blob lineage table and the merge-order recommendation out of the PR body, or shorten them to a link. Keep the 'Description' section focused on the implementation, design choices, and trade-offs. Confirm the title and description follow Simplified Technical English, and remove contractions such as 'It does not' is acceptable but 'doesn't' is not.

The test passes platform: "win32" and uses the mocked execFile, so it does not need a Windows host. With it.skipIf(process.platform !== "win32") the test never runs on Linux or macOS CI. The platform override exists precisely to make this branch reachable without a Windows runner, as documented on SafeWriteTextOptions.platform.

…d lock the referent
Review follow-ups: (1) a host whose icacls /restore exits 1300 now publishes successfully with one process warning instead of throwing DaclRestoreError after the rename on every overwrite; non-privilege restore failures still throw; (2) DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly treats PublishNotDurableError and DaclRestoreError as a completed save with a warning so the tool layer does not retry content already on disk; (3) file locks canonicalise through resolveRealPath (nearest existing ancestor, case preserved) so TaskHistoryStore and safeWriteJson serialize on the same lock through a symlinked ancestor; (4) safeWriteText reuses WorkspacePathResolver.resolveRealPath via a caseFold option instead of a private copy.
Review follow-up: the durability fsyncs (staged file and parent directory) now use the async fs.fsync form instead of fsyncSync, so the ~7 ms syscall no longer blocks the extension host event loop; this is the same syscall FileHandle.sync() uses internally. fsync failures still reject before the rename, and ordering assertions still prove file-fsync-before-close and directory-fsync-after-rename. Tests 98 passed.
Review follow-up: no production caller passes backup: true, and the option added a copy/retain/cleanup path with its own ~20 tests. Remove it until a caller needs the recovery copy: the primitive keeps the single atomic rename, staging fsync, DACL capture/restore and the dump cleanup. Tests and comments are pruned accordingly (the DACL retry, lost-DACL and ordering coverage stays). Related suites 200 passed, 8 skipped.
The durability test stubbed fsyncSync to fail the parent-directory barrier; the primitive now uses the async fsync form, so the test wraps fs.fsync and fails the second call through its callback. Both safeWriteJson and safeWriteText suites pass (110 passed, 8 skipped).
Windows CI returns an 8.3 short os.tmpdir() path, but resolveRealPath returns the long form, so the lock-path assertions now compare against the realpath of the existing ancestor instead of path.resolve. 3 tests passed locally.
All six review threads resolved; head is green (6/6)
215006153 addresses every open thread:
Host-limitation DACL restore now warns once and publishes instead of throwing after the rename; non-privilege restore failures still throw.
DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly treats post-commit PublishNotDurableError/DaclRestoreError as a completed save with a warning.
File locks canonicalise via resolveRealPath so TaskHistoryStore and safeWriteJson share one lock through a symlinked ancestor (new fileLock.spec.ts covers the alias case).
The private nearest-ancestor walk reuses WorkspacePathResolver.resolveRealPath with a new caseFold option.
The durability fsyncs run on the libuv thread pool instead of blocking the event loop.
The unused backup option and its copy/retain/cleanup path are removed.
Related suites: 110 passed (plus the broader file-safety set 200 passed, 8 skipped). Windows/Ubuntu platform checks are green again after the 8.3-path fix in the new lock test.

Learning: In Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code, src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts must restrict process-wide disabling of Windows DACL save and restore to the missing-privilege result, icacls exit code 1300. _restoreDaclWindows returns { restored, privilegeUnavailable }. Transient restore failures must retain retries and DACL handling for later writes; they must not set the process-wide memo. Once the missing-privilege memo is set, skip DACL capture as well as restoration and emit the privilege warning only once.
…s for cache state
Review follow-up: add isPublishCommittedError(error) for PublishNotDurableError/DaclRestoreError and use it where a consumer keeps state derived from the write. CacheManager.clearCacheFile now clears the in-memory hashes when the empty cache committed but its durability/ACL verification failed (the file on disk is the new one); DiffViewProvider reuses the shared guard. safeWriteText keeps the exact-commit failure contract. Adds slice tests: guard classification, staging mkdirSync EACCES/ENOSPC without open/rename, and the committed-clear cache path. Related suites 205 passed, 8 skipped.
Persistence Integrity (error) — post-commit error could lose cache state. Added the shared guard isPublishCommittedError(error) (true for PublishNotDurableError/DaclRestoreError) in the publish primitive and re-exported it alongside safeWriteJson:
CacheManager.clearCacheFile now clears fileHashes when the empty cache was committed but its durability/ACL verification failed — the file on disk is the new one, so keeping old in-memory hashes would disagree with it. A pre-commit failure still keeps the old state and the existing error telemetry.
DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly reuses the same guard instead of its own instanceof pair.
Tests: guard classification (both post-commit classes accepted, pre-commit/plain errors rejected) and a clearCacheFile test that mocks PublishNotDurableError and asserts the hashes are cleared (cache-manager 12 passed).
Regression Evidence (warning) — staging-dir mkdir failure untested. Added EACCES/ENOSPC cases: safeWriteText rejects with the exact mkdirSync error and never calls openSync or rename.
Related suites (safeWriteText, integration, safeWriteJson, cache-manager, DiffViewProvider): 205 passed, 8 skipped. Required checks re-run on the new head.

src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:778-779 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve caller-supplied temp files on pre-commit failure.
When options.tempPath is set, the DACL-capture path treats the file as caller-owned at Line 635. The outer rollback still unlinks tempPath for every pre-commit error. A failed fsync, rename, or mode operation can therefore delete the caller's staged file. Skip this unlink for caller-supplied paths, or apply one ownership rule consistently. Add a regression test for a caller-supplied temp path and a forced pre-commit failure.

Trivial · Use a typed no-link filesystem mock. · safeWriteText.spec.ts:177
The default fs.lstat mock returns null as unknown as fsSync.Stats. This bypasses strict typing and does not match the runtime return shape. Mock an ENOENT rejection or provide a typed non-symlink Stats object instead.
As per path instructions, TypeScript changes must use strict typing and introduce no unjustified double assertions.

Learning: For Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code PR #1395, src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts intentionally supports leaf-symlink targets by resolving and publishing at the referent. Locking, merge reads, staging, and publication use the canonical path to preserve the alias and coordinate alias/referent writers. Do not require blanket rejection of leaf symlinks. The user assigns storage-root confinement to confineTo in file-safety units U4/U6, tracked separately in easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code#41. The cited _refuseSymlinkedAncestors guard at commit 17c736ecb is an opt-in refuseSymlinkTarget policy and is not present at PR #1395 head 6df83d845.

Timestamp: 2026-10-08T12:37:36.839Z
Learning: In src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly intentionally requires a writable parent directory because it uses safeWriteText for atomic rename-based publication. Do not request an in-place fs.writeFile fallback for a writable target in a non-writable directory; that fallback would discard the intended atomicity. The caller separately checks fs.access with fsConstants.W_OK to reject existing non-writable targets and permits ENOENT for new targets.
Review follow-ups: the alias/referent lock test now asserts the ELOCKED failure kind (lock contention, not an unrelated lockfile error) and releases both the holder and, should it ever acquire, the contending lock from a finally block so a failing assertion cannot strand the lock. The committed-clear cache test keeps the PublishNotDurableError instance and asserts the warning receives the exact message prefix plus that instance. fileLock + cache-manager specs 15 passed.
Resolve conflicts in the file-safety cluster by keeping this branch's
atomic-publish implementation (upstream/main still carries the older
backup-based safeWriteJson). Upstream's non-conflicting changes are kept.
This PR is blocked on a design fork, not on a textual conflict, and we want a maintainer to pick the shape rather than have us guess it in a merge commit.
Merging current main (73931fe) into 573de63 produces 16 conflict regions across three files: src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts (6), src/utils/tests/safeWriteJson.test.ts (9), src/utils/fileLock.ts (1). The regions are not two edits to the same lines; they are two publish protocols that both got written.
What main landed (bb6cbee, Completed task fails to resume after restart when a message write is interrupted, 2026-11-06): a new src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts that safeWriteJson imports (recoverInterruptedReplacement), getErrorCode, a flush-before-commit step (_flushFileToDisk, opened r+), a single-rename commit with an EPERM two-step fallback (target to backup, then replacement to target, with rollback), GC of orphaned replacement files, and FileLockOptions { waitForStaleLock, immediate } with a tracePersistenceEvent("json-lock-wait") call.
What this branch landed: src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts (819 lines, branch-only; resolvePublishTarget, assertPublishWithinAuthorizedRoot, DaclCaptureError, DaclRestoreError, PublishNotDurableError, isPublishCommittedError), which safeWriteJson delegates to. It has no recovery scan, no EPERM fallback and no flush step. Main has no src/services/file-safety directory at all.
Consumers and the call signature are identical on both sides (modelCache, importExport, FileContextTracker, TaskHistoryStore, apiMessages, delegation-concurrent and their specs), so this is a protocol divergence, not an API divergence.
Test arithmetic against the merge base a4f774b: base 21 titles, branch 23, main 28. 15 titles were added by both parents — the same names on both sides, which is why the file conflicts in nine places. 11 are main-only and each drives main's landed behaviour (EPERM fallback, restore when the fallback's replacement rename fails, keep the committed file on a non-EPERM commit failure, recovery-scan ENOENT, restore an orphaned backup, restore by mtime preserving unrelated siblings, GC of orphaned replacement files, open the replacement with write access for flushing, backup-delete failure). 6 are branch-only and pin the guarded semantics (no copy before commit, failed publish leaves the target, propagate the publish failure and remove the staged .new_ file, stage beside the symlink referent and commit onto it, do not treat the staged path as a leftover when the DACL restore failed, surface a non-ENOENT stat failure instead of staging with the default mode).
Why a union is not a resolution. Neither side's suite passes against the other's implementation: main's tests drive fs.rename through a call-count state machine and mock fs.open/fs.readdir, which this branch's implementation never does, and this branch's tests assert createWriteStream paths, realpath mocking and DACL restore behaviour main's implementation never had. A conflict-marker union produces one file containing two publish protocols.
What we are doing in the meantime (no maintainer decision required, and reversible): keep main's safeWriteJson.ts, its test file and jsonFileRecovery.ts exactly as main has them; keep this branch's safeWriteText.ts and its specs, with the six guarded cases pointed at safeWriteText, which is the module that actually implements what they assert; compose fileLock.ts (main's options?: FileLockOptions and the waitForStaleLock trace around this branch's resolveFileLockPath realpath keying). That means this PR no longer re-plumbs safeWriteJson, and its description is being changed to say so rather than left to imply a delegation it no longer performs.
The question for a maintainer. Which write path should win?
Main's landed protocol absorbs the guarded semantics — port the confined-path / DACL authorisation onto main's recovery + EPERM-fallback + flush flow, so one function owns both and both test sets pass. This is a reconciliation unit, not a merge.
The guarded path absorbs main's — safeWriteText gains the recovery scan, the EPERM two-step fallback and the flush step, and safeWriteJson delegates to it.
One fact that may decide it for you: bb6cbee is the merge base of #1408, so #1408's lineage is the only tree in this series where the recovery module and safeWriteText already sit together — its head carries both. If that tree proves coherent, option 3 is cheap and we will port #1395's guarded semantics onto that shape. If #1408 conflicts on the same three files, the fork is structural and option 1 or 2 has to be chosen before #1395 and #1405 can be refreshed. We will report which it is.
fileLock.ts composes either way and is not part of the question.
…Code-Org#1395 (guarded text-publish module)
Upstream main at the merge moment: 73931fe
("chore(deps): update dependency zustand to v5.0.16 (Zoo-Code-Org#2275)"), read with git ls-remote
immediately before the merge and re-read as MERGE_HEAD. Branch head before the merge:
573de63. Merge base: a4f774b.
This unit ships src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts and its specs. It does not yet
re-plumb safeWriteJson. Upstream main landed jsonFileRecovery.ts, the EPERM two-step
fallback and the flush step on that same function while this branch was open, so
delegating safeWriteJson onto the text module would have rewritten main's shipped json
protocol a second time. Main's safeWriteJson.ts, safeWriteJson.test.ts and
jsonFileRecovery.ts therefore come across as main's blobs, byte-identical to main: git
diff --name-only 73931fe -- <path> is empty for all three. No hunk of main's json work
moved. The only composed content is src/utils/fileLock.ts and one import line in
src/services/code-index/cache-manager.ts.
Conflict resolution (3 conflicted files, 16 regions; every conflicted path was read from
all three stages before resolving, and the merge was rehearsed with --no-commit --no-ff
first):
- src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts: main's blob whole (286 lines). Main's version keeps its own
staging, backup, EPERM-retry protocol, _flushFileToDisk, the backupPath === null
two-step fallback and the persistenceTrace hooks; this branch's 228-line version had
moved all of that into safeWriteText and only re-exported it, so it is the side that
was dropped.
- src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts: main's blob whole (28 titles; branch 23, base
21). Six branch-only titles were re-pointed at the text module and appended to
src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts with their titles verbatim
instead of being deleted; main's eleven json-specific titles (EPERM two-step fallback,
flush step, recovery classification) survive in main's blob.
- src/utils/fileLock.ts: composition rather than either side wholesale. Main's side is
kept intact - LOCK_STALE_MS 31_000, RECOVERY_RETRY_MS and RECOVERY_GRACE_MS, the
FileLockOptions parameter ({ waitForStaleLock, immediate }), the options-driven retry
blocks, the tracePersistenceEvent("json-lock-wait", ...) call and the lock-order
comment - and this branch's contribution is kept on top of it: the resolveRealPath
import and the exported resolveFileLockPath helper, which both call sites now use
(const absoluteFilePath = await resolveFileLockPath(filePath)). Without that helper the
lock key comes from the unresolved path on hosts where the workspace path is a junction
or symlink, which is what this branch was adding.
- src/services/code-index/cache-manager.ts: the only consumer edit. It imported
isPublishCommittedError from ../../utils/safeWriteJson; main's safeWriteJson no longer
exports that, so the import now reads it from ../../services/file-safety/safeWriteText.
DiffViewProvider already imported it from there and needed no change.
The six re-pointed tests, with the call each one now makes:
1. does not treat the staged path as a leftover when the commit landed but the DACL
restore failed -- safeWriteText(target, "data", { platform: "win32", execFileRunner })
with only the /restore invocation failing; asserts DaclRestoreError,
isPublishCommittedError(caught) === true, and that no fs.unlink call names the staged
path the commit rename consumed.
2. surfaces a stat failure other than ENOENT instead of staging with the default mode --
statSync throws EIO; asserts rejects.toBe(eio) and that fsSync.openSync and fs.rename
were never called. The existing EACCES test pins the classification but not this
ordering half.
3. does not copy the target before the commit: the rename is already atomic -- asserts
fs.copyFile was never called, exactly one fs.rename onto the target, and no unlink.
4. a failed publish leaves the target in place because the backup is a copy -- fs.rename
rejects once on linux; asserts rejects.toBe(renameFailure), no rename with the target
as source, exactly one attempt, and no copyFile.
5. propagates the publish failure and removes the staged .new_ file -- caller-supplied
tempPath; asserts the primary error propagates and an fs.unlink names that staged path.
6. stages the temp file beside the symlink referent and commits onto it -- asserts the
staged openSync paths sit under path.dirname of the resolved referent and not under the
alias's directory, and that the rename lands on the referent.
None of the six asserts something only safeWriteJson can do: the strings "Rename from temp
to final failed" and "Primary rename failed" appear only inside the old json spec, as
injected fs.rename fixtures. Each one pins a half that the existing text-spec tests do
not, so they were re-pointed rather than dropped. That is also why there is no test-side
evidence for a json/text reconciliation unit: nothing in the branch's json spec required
safeWriteJson to keep delegating.

- Survivor arithmetic over the 81 test paths either parent touched: 102 branch-added

merged tree, 6 relocated - exactly the six json-spec titles listed above, now living in
safeWriteText.spec.ts. No test was dropped.
Not run locally: full src vitest, packages/* lanes, apps/vscode-e2e,
pnpm lifecycle:model-check (no lifecycle-model or scheduler files in this merge set), and
local Stryker, which is unrunnable in this lane (spawnSync of .bin\stryker returns ENOENT).
Survivor and gate numbers aside, one lineage fact worth recording: Zoo-Code-Org#1408 carries a 469-line
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts with an ENOENT fast path in backup cleanup, while
this branch carries an 819-line implementation of the same path from merge base bb6cbee.
Whichever of the two lands second will have to reconcile that file; main has no
safeWriteText.ts yet, so this merge does not hit it.

verbatim; none asserted anything that only safeWriteJson could do (the strings "Rename
from temp to final failed" and "Primary rename failed" occur only inside the old json
spec, as injected fs.rename fixtures), so they moved rather than being deleted. The
six are listed with the call each one now makes in the PR body.
src/utils/fileLock.ts - composed, 117 lines, braces balanced. Main's side kept intact
(LOCK_STALE_MS 31_000, RECOVERY_RETRY_MS/RECOVERY_GRACE_MS, the FileLockOptions { waitForStaleLock, immediate } parameter, the options-driven retry blocks, the tracePersistenceEvent("json-lock-wait", ...) call, the lock-order comment) with this
branch's resolveRealPath import and exported resolveFileLockPath on top; both call
sites read const absoluteFilePath = await resolveFileLockPath(filePath). Neither side's
blob alone would have compiled: main's does not resolve the workspace path, this branch's
does not know about waitForStaleLock or the trace event.
Consumer edit: src/services/code-index/cache-manager.ts split its import - isPublishCommittedError now comes from ../../services/file-safety/safeWriteText
(main's safeWriteJson does not export it). DiffViewProvider already imported it from
there and needed no edit.
Hooks
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile ran after the merge and before the first gate (exit 0,
2.3 s warm) and regenerated .husky/_/pre-commit and .husky/_/pre-push as the two-line
husky wrappers (#!/usr/bin/env sh + . "$(dirname "$0")/h"), i.e. the husky wrapper, not
a stub. .husky/pre-commit therefore ran lint-staged on the merge commit: 6 chunks over src/**/*.ts (36, 42, 38, 48, 48, 47 files) plus webview-ui/src/**/*.{ts,tsx} 21 files,
each chunk running pnpm --dir src exec eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored, all
COMPLETED. .husky/pre-push ran tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit plus turbo check-types
across 13 packages on the push. No --no-verify, no amend of a pushed commit.
Suites run locally on this tree
Ran (all exit 0):
pnpm --dir src run check-types
pnpm --dir webview-ui run check-types
pnpm --dir src run lint - package script, not per-file
prettier --check over the 291-path merge set: 272 parseable paths in 3 batches; 2 files
were reformatted (the text spec and fileLock.ts) and then reported clean; 19 present
paths have no prettier parser (.gitignore, .png) and are counted as not run; 0
merge-set paths were absent from the tree.
Not run locally: full src vitest, packages/* lanes, apps/vscode-e2e, pnpm lifecycle:model-check (no lifecycle-model, reducer or scheduler files in this merge
set), and local Stryker - unrunnable in this lane (spawnSync of .bin\stryker returns
ENOENT), so mutation evidence for this head is the CI mutation-diff job only.
Suppressions
src/eslint-suppressions.json came across byte-identical to main's blob: 265 entries /
2870 total counts (main: 265 / 2870). No entry in the merged tree exceeds main's count for
it (0 entries above main). The branch's own blob was 338 entries / 3766 counts; main's lower
counts were followed. eslint --max-warnings=0 on the merged text spec exits 0 with no
suppression for that file (it has no entry, before or after).
Survivor arithmetic (test titles)
Over the 81 test paths either parent touched relative to the merge base:
branch-added titles: 102
main-added titles: 304
missing from the merged tree: 0 of 406
relocated: 6 - the six safeWriteJson.test.ts titles listed above, now present in src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts
dropped: 0

Follow-up filed so this fork has one decision home: #2350. It records the two naming contracts this area depends on verbatim — the guarded-write primitive accepting only basenames matching .new_*.tmp (safeWriteText.ts:405, rationale :399-404, pinned by safeWriteText.spec.ts:1696) and main's recovery accepting only .<basename>.new_* / .<basename>.bak_* (jsonFileRecovery.ts:9-19) — shows they are mutually exclusive for a caller-staged file, and asks that one convention win in one place (or that writer and recovery share one exported staging-name helper) before the first of the divergent safeWriteText.ts blobs merges, because whichever lands first binds the rest. Measured tonight at four trees: 833 lines at #1911's head, 819 at this head, 446 at #1405's, 469 at #1408's, and no such file at main 73931fe8be.
Measured answer to the fork question posed in this thread (#2350 covers the naming half; this is the behaviour half). We paired the test surface of the two write-path branches at the title level -- #1405's safeWriteText.spec.ts has 44 it cases (56 counting describe headers) against this branch's 89 (108 with headers); 16 it titles are identical, so #1405 has 28 cases with no twin here. Pairing each against the nearest assertion on this branch: 8 same-contract (fsync-abort, mkdir/access propagation, creation-mode and restrictive-mode preservation, fchmodSync vs umask, staging-dir removal on success and on re-check rejection, parent creation), 4 partial (staging-dir removal on commit failure, caller-supplied tempPath pass-through, backup:true with no target, access-error propagation outside the backup path), 3 same-mechanism-opposite-outcome (dump unlinking: this branch aborts where #1405 falls back, and reports DaclRestoreError where #1405 lets the write survive), 5 direct conflicts, and 8 with no counterpart at all (#1405's pre-commit-hook family of 7 plus non-Error rollback rendering, RollbackFailedError carrying the backup path, and no-staging-dir-to-remove when the caller supplied the temp path).
The five direct conflicts are pinned behaviour on three axes, not style differences:
Backup strategy -- feat(tools): guarded write CAS core with per-path FIFO chain (S4a, #1375) #1405 renames target to backup before the commit and restores it on rollback; this branch treats the backup as a copy (a failed publish leaves the target in place because the backup is a copy, does not copy the target before the commit).
Consequence for whoever merges second: at least one of those pins has to move, and it should be a maintainer's call rather than something a merge resolution quietly decides, because each side's behaviour is asserted by its own tests. Posted so the fork decision has the arithmetic in one place; this comment changes no code.

What this unit ships
This PR ships
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.tsand its specs - the guarded textpublish primitive (staged write under a private per-write staging directory, mode/gid capture
from the target, win32 DACL save/restore around the commit rename, fsync of file and
directory, typed post-commit errors and
isPublishCommittedError).It does not yet re-plumb
safeWriteJson. While this branch was open, upstream mainlanded
src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts, the EPERM two-step fallback and the flush step onthat same function. Delegating
safeWriteJsononto the text module would have rewrittenmain's shipped json protocol a second time, so this branch now leaves
src/utils/safeWriteJson.tsas main's implementation.src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts,src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.tsandsrc/utils/jsonFileRecovery.tsin this PR are byte-identical to main73931fe8be(
git diff --name-only 73931fe8be -- <path>is empty for all three at head 1f8ae7f).safeWriteJson.ts(228 lines that onlyre-exported the text module) is dropped, not spliced into main's file.
src/utils/fileLock.tsis a composition: main'sFileLockOptions(
{ waitForStaleLock, immediate }), thejson-lock-waittrace call, the recoveryconstants and the options-driven retry blocks, plus this branch's
resolveRealPathimport and its exported
resolveFileLockPath, which both call sites now use. Withoutthat helper the lock key comes from the unresolved path where the workspace path is a
junction or symlink.
src/services/code-index/cache-manager.tsis the only consumer edit: it readisPublishCommittedErrorfrom../../utils/safeWriteJson; main'ssafeWriteJsondoesnot export it, so that import now points at
../../services/file-safety/safeWriteText.DiffViewProvideralready imported it from there.Six json-spec tests re-pointed, not deleted
The merge takes main's
safeWriteJson.test.ts(28 titles) whole. Six titles that existedonly on this branch were re-pointed at
safeWriteTextand appended tosrc/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.tswith their titles verbatim:does not treat the staged path as a leftover when the commit landed but the DACL restore failed-safeWriteText(target, "data", { platform: "win32", execFileRunner })with onlythe
/restoreinvocation failing; assertsDaclRestoreError,isPublishCommittedError(caught) === true, and that nofs.unlinknames the staged paththe commit rename consumed.
surfaces a stat failure other than ENOENT instead of staging with the default mode-statSyncthrows EIO; assertsrejects.toBe(eio)and thatfsSync.openSyncandfs.renamewere never called (the existing EACCES test pins the classification, not thisordering half).
does not copy the target before the commit: the rename is already atomic- asserts nofs.copyFile, exactly onefs.renameonto the target, no unlink.a failed publish leaves the target in place because the backup is a copy-fs.renamerejects once on linux; asserts
rejects.toBe(renameFailure), no rename with the targetas source, exactly one attempt, no
copyFile.propagates the publish failure and removes the staged .new_ file- caller-suppliedtempPath; asserts the primary error propagates and anfs.unlinknames that staged path.stages the temp file beside the symlink referent and commits onto it- asserts thestaged
openSyncpaths sit underpath.dirnameof the resolved referent and not underthe alias's directory, and the rename lands on the referent.
None of the six asserts something only
safeWriteJsoncan do - the strings "Rename fromtemp to final failed" and "Primary rename failed" appear only inside the old json spec as
injected
fs.renamefixtures - and each one pins a half that the existing text-spec testsdo not. There is therefore no test-side evidence for a separate json/text reconciliation
unit; if one is wanted later it would be a design decision, not a test demand.

Lineage note for the reviewer
#1408 carries a 469-line
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts(with an ENOENT fastpath in backup cleanup); this branch carries an 819-line implementation of the same path from
merge base
bb6cbee59. They are different implementations of one path, so whichever landssecond has to reconcile that file. Main has no
safeWriteText.tsyet, which is why thismerge does not conflict on it.
The
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.tslineage: three blobs, one fileAdded 2026-11-07 because the same module exists in three shapes across this campaign and main has none of it, so whichever order these land in decides what main's file is. Everything in the table was measured, not inferred: each blob was read out of its own tree with
git show <head>:<path>, and the consumer counts come fromgit greprestricted to non-spec files in that same tree. upstream/main is73931fe8be253b93ec11103a0672c615e849f895, the commit the three merges here were rehearsed against.73931fe8be1f8ae7fd0afaSafeWriteTextOptions,DaclCaptureError,PublishNotDurableError,DaclRestoreError,isPublishCommittedError,resolvePublishTarget,assertPublishWithinAuthorizedRoot,safeWriteTextintegrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts,services/code-index/cache-manager.ts1786825f6423SafeWriteTextOptions,resolvePublishTarget,safeWriteTextcore/tools/guardedWrite.ts, andutils/safeWriteJson.tsforresolvePublishTargetonly910fa9011966(still open, not merged)flushPendingBackupRemovals,SafeWriteTextOptions,resolvePublishTarget,safeWriteTextcore/tools/guardedWrite.tsRecommendation, offered as a recommendation and not as a ruling: main should take this PR's 819-line blob as the file, and #1405's refusal wiring (
refuseSymlinkTarget,_refuseSymlinkedAncestors, the resolution-ordered lock target, the refusal checks) should ride on top of it as additive deltas, which is the direction the #1405 merge commit already went in for the json module. Two measured reasons. First, this blob is the only one whose extra types already have production consumers -isPublishCommittedError,PublishNotDurableErrorandDaclRestoreErrorare imported byDiffViewProvider.tsandcache-manager.tshere - so landing the narrower blobs first strands those imports and forces the types back in afterwards. Second, the knip evidence: this head passespnpm knip:production(exit 0, confirmed locally and its CIknipcheck is success) precisely because two production files import the module, whereas #1405's head fails it, and #1408's tree wires the module only throughcore/tools/guardedWrite.ts, a file its ownknip.jsonexcludes from analysis - so #1408's shape would hand main the same "unused in production" failure #1405 had and need the same entry declaration. What each order leaves behind. Taking #1395 first (recommended): main gets the widest surface and the largest spec, and #1405 must re-apply its refusal wiring onto an 819-line body and re-point the call sites of the 21 branch-only titles again - exactly the re-pointing the #1405 merge commit did - plus the
knip.jsonentry statement is unnecessary here and would only be needed if the module lost its production importers. Taking #1408's blob first: main gainsflushPendingBackupRemovals, which neither other blob exports, but then has to grow the five DACL/durability/authorization names this blob carries and re-merge an 89-title spec onto a file whose internals differ, and it inherits the knip situation above. Taking #1405's blob first: main gets the narrowest file (3 exports) and dropsflushPendingBackupRemovalsand all five of this blob's error/authorization names, so the two consumers measured above have nothing to import and the 819-line body arrives later as an expansion of a file that is already wired - the ordering with the most rework.Stated plainly: the choice is which blob is main's file, and the recommendation is this one; the alternatives are named with what each leaves behind so a maintainer can pick differently without re-measuring.
