If the controller owner matches on Group, Kind, Name, I think we should adopt. That would mean that the CE with the expected name was deleted and re-created (which is possible in a backup/restore situation)

Good call — done. checkAdoptable now also adopts when the existing deployment's controllerRef matches the ClusterExtension by group + kind + name but carries a different UID (the delete-and-recreate / backup-restore case); a genuinely different owner (different name or kind) still gets the terminal refuse. The server-side apply then re-stamps the current UID as the sole controller (verified there's no dual controller ref). Added a unit test for the prior-incarnation case.

Reconcile the extension when the ownership conflict clears.

If another extension owns the deployment, this terminal error stops retries. The Boxcutter controller watches deployments through their controller owner reference. If an operator deletes the conflicting deployment, its delete event targets the foreign extension, not the blocked extension. The blocked extension can remain Blocked until an unrelated event reconciles it. Watch deployment changes by deployment name so conflict removal queues the corresponding extension. Review comment at @internal/operator-controller/applier/boxcutter.go at line

Update the Boxcutter controller’s deployment watch so deployment changes,
including deletion, enqueue the blocked extension by deployment name rather than
relying only on the controller owner reference. Preserve the terminal conflict
error behavior while ensuring the extension reconciles when the conflicting
deployment is removed.

Valid edge case, deferring to a follow-up. Two notes:

  • The blocked extension is self-healing, not permanently stuck: the terminal error stops immediate retries, but the extension re-reconciles on its next spec change, a catalog change, or the controller's periodic resync — at which point it adopts the (now-unowned) deployment.
  • On the "another extension owns the deployment" framing: through normal operation that can't happen, since a COD is named after its extension (ext.Name) and extension names are unique, so two extensions never contend for the same COD name. The realistic foreign owner is a user- or external-controller-created COD carrying the extension's name, which makes the trigger rare.

Prompt recovery (a name-keyed COD watch that enqueues the same-named extension regardless of ownership) is worth doing but is a controller-wiring change beyond this applier-level guard, so I'll track it separately rather than expand this PR.

@perdasilva Agreed. The concern is delayed recovery after the ownership conflict clears, not permanent failure. My example should have described a user- or external-controller-created COD with the extension’s name, rather than normal contention between two extensions.

Deferring the name-keyed COD watch to a controller-wiring follow-up is reasonable. No change is needed in this PR for that follow-up.

I left a similar comment here: #3077 (comment)

Perhaps for now we just return a normal error (not wrapped with TerminalError). That results in permanent Progressing=True/Retrying with exponential backoff just like all of the other error paths in the CE reconciler that happen prior to the COD being applied successfully. Right now, it seems like the progress deadline condition stuff only kicks in when the COD is present.

In a follow-up, we should probably try to put code in place that handles progression deadlines for errors that occur prior to the COD being at the desired state.

Seems like the humans are having a chat. I'll hop back into my burrow for now. If you need me again, just tag @coderabbitai in a new comment, and I'll come hopping out!

FWIW, I think we've effectively disabled periodic resync by using the ResourceVersionChanged predicate. Was that an intentional choice? If not, perhaps something to reconsider.

Also, maybe instead of watching/caching all CODs in the CE informer cache so that we can do this mapping, we can just use RequeueAfter instead of the TerminalError. I don't think TerminalError is really appropriate here because some other change can happen in another object to unstick things. TerminalError to me is "you have to change this object to unstick things".

// watch that enqueues the same-named ClusterExtension on any ClusterObjectDeployment change so a blocked
// extension recovers promptly once the conflict clears.
