fix: devtools not working over LAN when using --public - #1148
Collect non-loopback origins from Nuxt's listener and pass them to Vite DevTools' allowedOrigins so the WebSocket accepts connections from LAN hosts when the server is exposed via --public / --host.
I always run my Nuxt project on one machine and test from a couple other devices on the same network. Ever since upgrading to DevTools v4, opening the panel from a LAN IP just doesn't work — the WebSocket gets rejected because allowedOrigins only has localhost.
Turns out the listen hook already has access to all the URLs Nuxt is bound to, so we just need to grab the non-loopback ones and pass them along to Vite DevTools. That's basically all this does.
In packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts:
Added isLoopbackHost() to filter out localhost / 127.x / ::1
Added collectAllowedOrigins() which reads from the listener, or from a NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS env var if you want to override manually (handy for --tunnel setups)
Made the listen hook async so it can call getURLs()
Passed the collected origins into both the Vite 8.3+ config path and the DevTools() fallback
…t#1118)
Collect non-loopback origins from Nuxt's listener and pass them to
Vite DevTools' `allowedOrigins` so the WebSocket accepts connections
from LAN hosts when the server is exposed via --public / --host.
DevTools client assets are now discovered from the package peer dependency, including nightly package aliases. The module collects allowed origins from NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS or from listener URLs, excluding malformed URLs and loopback hosts. The listen hook uses the first collected origin as the public DevTools origin. Vite 8.3+ configuration and the legacy DevTools plugin receive the collected origins.
The change makes DevTools work from LAN hosts, but when a LAN origin is discovered it overwrites any origins the user had already allowed. Merge the discovered origins into the existing list before merging this.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#1118] requires DevTools to accept the same non-loopback hosts as Nuxt when the app uses --public or --host. packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts reads listener URLs with getURLs(), filters loopback hosts, and passes the resulting origins to both the Vite 8.3+ configuration path and the DevTools() fallback. The NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS override also supports the tunnel case noted in [#1118].
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The change is limited to packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts. The listener-origin collection, loopback filtering, Vite configuration, fallback configuration, and tunnel override all support the DevTools WebSocket host requirement in [#1118]. No unrelated change is shown.

* Type: `string | string[]`
* Default: `VITE_`
Env variables starting with `envPrefix` will be exposed to your client source code via `import.meta.env`.
:::warning SECURITY NOTES `envPrefix` should not be set as `''`, which will expose all your env variables and cause unexpected leaking of sensitive information. Vite will throw an error when detecting `''`.

## appType
* Type: `'spa' | 'mpa' | 'custom'`
* Default: `'spa'`
Whether your application is a Single Page Application (SPA), a Multi Page Application (MPA), or Custom Application (SSR and frameworks with custom HTML handling):
* `'spa'`: include HTML middlewares and use SPA fallback. Configure sirv with `single: true` in preview
* `'mpa'`: include HTML middlewares
* `'custom'`: don't include HTML middlewares
Learn more in Vite's SSR guide. Related: `server.middlewareMode`.
## devtools
* Experimental: Give Feedback
* Type: `boolean` | `DevToolsConfig`
* Default: `false`
Enable devtools integration for inspecting the dev server and analyzing builds. Ensure that `@vitejs/devtools` is installed as a dependency. Install `@vitejs/devtools-vite` to inspect the Vite dev server and `@vitejs/devtools-rolldown` to enable build analysis. DevTools runs for both `serve` and `build` by default; use `apply` to limit it to either command.
Plugin `config` hooks cannot change the `devtools` option. Set it in the user config instead.
When installed, `@vitejs/devtools` provides the type definitions for this option:
import { defineConfig } from 'vite'
export default defineConfig({
devtools: {
apply: 'serve',
},
})

<title>Remote Client | Vite DevTools</title>
<location>https://devtools.vite.dev/kit/remote-client</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: yesterday; Ship node-side code only. ... If the token leaks (for example to an external analytics tool that ingests URLs), the wrong origin can't reuse it. ... `connectRemoteDevTools()` reads the descriptor from the current URL, opens the WebSocket, and resolves to a `DevToolsRpcClient` with `.call`, `.callEvent`, `.callOptional`, `.sharedState`, and the rest of the standard API documented in RPC. ... `import { connectRemoteDevTools, parseRemoteConnection } from '@vitejs/devtools-kit/client' ... cacheOptions: { maxAge: 5000 }, ... The WebSocket server runs in dev mode (`vite`); remote-iframe docks skip themselves in static-dump output, so no `when` clause is needed.
2. Injects a connection descriptor — the WS URL, the token, and the user's dev-server origin — into the iframe's `src` attribute.
3. Accepts the token on WebSocket handshake (after verifying the `Origin` header, if origin-lock is on).
On the hosted page, `connectRemoteDevTools()` parses the descriptor out of the URL and returns a fully connected `DevToolsRpcClient` — the same client you'd get from `getDevToolsRpcClient()` in an embedded page.
## Registering a remote dock
ts
`import type { Plugin } from 'vite'
export function myPlugin(): Plugin {
return {
name: 'my-plugin',
devtools: {
setup(ctx) {
ctx.docks.register({
id: 'my-remote-tool',
title: 'My Tool',
icon: 'ph:cloud-duotone',
type: 'iframe',
url: 'https://example.com/devtools',
remote: true,
})
},
},
}
}`
That's the whole node-side change. The dock renders like a regular iframe panel, with the connection descriptor appended invisibly to the URL.
### Options
ts
`interface RemoteDockOptions {
/** @default 'fragment' */
transport?: 'fragment' | 'query'
/** @default true */
originLock?: boolean
}
// in ctx.docks.register({ ... }):
// remote: true
// or:
// remote: { transport: 'query', originLock: false }`
#### `transport`
* `'fragment'` (default) — the descriptor rides as a URL fragment (`#vite-devtools-kit-connection=...`). Fragments stay client-side: they don't reach servers, don't enter access logs, and get stripped from `Referer` on sub-resource requests. The safest place to carry an auth token.
* `'query'` — the descriptor rides as a query parameter (`?vite-devtools-kit-connection=...`). Pick this when your SPA router uses the fragment for navigation, or when your hosting platform / CDN rewrites URLs in a way that drops fragments.
WARNING
With `'query'` transport, the auth token appears in server access logs and outbound `Referer` headers. Use it only when you control the analytics / log pipeline on the hosted origin.
#### `originLock`
When on (default), the WebSocket handshake is rejected if the browser's `Origin` header doesn't match the origin of the registered dock URL. If the token leaks (for example to an external analytics tool that ingests URLs), the wrong origin can't reuse it.
Turn it off only when the same hosted app is served from multiple origins (e.g. preview deploys on `pr-123.preview.example.com`):
ts
`ctx.docks.register({
id: 'my-remote-tool',
title: 'My Tool',
icon: 'ph:cloud-duotone',
type: 'iframe',
url: 'https://example.com/devtools',
remote: { originLock: false },
})`
renderStandaloneLandingPage()
}
else {
const rpc = await connectRemoteDevTools()
renderConnectedUi(rpc)
}`
### Advanced: custom URL / options
`connectRemoteDevTools` forwards any `DevToolsRpcClientOptions` — RPC caching, custom `rpcOptions`, and so on — while keeping `connectionMeta` and `authToken` sourced from the descriptor.
ts
`const rpc = await connectRemoteDevTools({
cacheOptions: { maxAge: 5000 },
})`
For testing or non-browser environments, pass an explicit URL or raw fragment/query string to `parseRemoteConnection`:
ts
`parseRemoteConnection('https://example.com/p#vite-devtools-kit-connection=...')
parseRemoteConnection('?vite-devtools-kit-connection=...')`
## Descriptor shape
The descriptor is a superset of `ConnectionMeta`, so `getDevToolsRpcClient({ connectionMeta })` accepts a parsed descriptor directly:
ts
`interface RemoteConnectionInfo {
v: 1
backend: 'websocket'
/** Full ws:// or wss:// URL. */
websocket: string
authToken: string
/** Dev-server origin, e.g. http://localhost:5173. */
origin: string
}`
It's JSON-encoded and base64url-encoded, then appended to the iframe URL under the parameter name `vite-devtools-kit-connection`.
## Trust boundary
Remote mode extends the following trust chain:
1. The user installs your plugin and opts into DevTools.
2. Your plugin declares a remote URL.
3. DevTools hands the hosted origin a session token scoped to that URL.
Properties of the session token:
* Pre-approved. No interactive "trust this browser?" prompt fires; the user agreed to the integration when they installed the plugin.
* Session-scoped. Stored in memory only and regenerated on every dev-server restart.
* Re-register-scoped. Calling `ctx.docks.register(...)` again for the same id revokes the previous token; live WS clients on the old token receive `devframe:auth:revoked` and become untrusted.
* Origin-locked by default. Only connections whose `Origin` matches the dock URL are accepted.
WARNING
The token rides in the URL — treat it as a session secret. Avoid logging URLs to external services on the hosted page, and prefer `transport: 'fragment'` unless you have a specific reason to use `'query'`.
## Build mode
The WebSocket server runs in dev mode (`vite`); remote-iframe docks skip themselves in static-dump output, so no `when` clause is needed. Add one if you want different visibility in embedded vs. standalone clients:
ts
`ctx.docks.register({
// ...
remote: true,
when: 'clientType == embedded',
})`</excerpt>

Preserve user-configured origins.
When lanAllowedOrigins is non-empty, this assignment replaces the user's vite.devtools.allowedOrigins. Vite DevTools adds the configured entries to its built-in loopback allowlist. It does not restore origins removed from the configured array. Therefore, a previously permitted non-loopback origin can lose WebSocket access.
When lanAllowedOrigins is empty, the guard leaves the existing configuration unchanged. Merge the two configured lists instead.

Update the assignment to devtools.allowedOrigins so it merges the existing
configured origins with lanAllowedOrigins instead of replacing them, preserving
user-configured origins and avoiding duplicates.

Collect non-loopback origins from Nuxt's listener and pass them to Vite DevTools'
allowedOriginsso the WebSocket accepts connections from LAN hosts when the server is exposed via --public / --host.🔗 Linked issue
Resolves #1118
📚 Description
I always run my Nuxt project on one machine and test from a couple other devices on the same network. Ever since upgrading to DevTools v4, opening the panel from a LAN IP just doesn't work — the WebSocket gets rejected because
allowedOriginsonly haslocalhost.Turns out the
listenhook already has access to all the URLs Nuxt is bound to, so we just need to grab the non-loopback ones and pass them along to Vite DevTools. That's basically all this does.In
