What

Was: installing plane-sdk could keep a certifi bundle that trusts the emSign ECC Root CA - G3. Its keys were exposed in the eMudhra incident (Python advisory). The publish job ran on Python 3.8, where pip install --upgrade pip cannot reach the fixed pip 26.2.2 (it needs Python 3.10).
Now: plane-sdk requires certifi>=2026.10.19, the bundle requests uses; requirements.txt carries the same floor, so a venv set up from it alone also upgrades. The publish job runs on Python 3.12. Python 3.10, the SDK's minimum, reached end of life on 2026-10-01. Both test workflow jobs upgrade pip to 26.2.2 before installing; the runner's pip was 26.2.1.

  • certifi 2026.10.19 removes only G3 and keeps the three unaffected emSign roots (C3, C1, G1). Checked by comparing the cacert.pem of 2026.1.4 and 2026.10.19.

Where to look

  1. 🔴 pyproject.toml — new runtime dependency floor; version 0.3.2
  2. 🟡 .github/workflows/publish.yml — Python 3.8 → 3.12
  3. 🟡 .github/workflows/test.yml — pip upgrade before each install step
  4. ⚪ requirements.txt — same certifi floor

Watch out for: a direct certifi dependency in a library. Anyone who pins certifi below 2026.10.19 gets a resolver conflict when they upgrade plane-sdk, which is the intent.

Blast Radius

  • pip install plane-sdk / upgrade (every consumer) — new certifi floor; a regression is a resolver conflict. Sweep: plane-mcp-server pins plane-sdk==0.3.1 and gets the same floor in its companion PR; plane-ee Pi pins plane-sdk==0.2.24 and pins no certifi, so it is not reached.
  • Publish to PyPI workflow — builds and uploads on Python 3.12; a regression is a failed build or twine upload.
  • Test workflow (every PR and push to main) and the v2 golden-drift job — new pip upgrade step; a regression is a failed install step.

Proof

Important

Confidence: Medium — lint and unit tests pass locally with certifi 2026.10.19; the publish workflow on Python 3.12 was not run.

Ran (locally, fresh venv, Python 3.12): ruff check plane/api/v2 plane/models/v2 tests/v2 and pytest tests/v2 --ignore=tests/v2/integration pass; pytest tests/v2/integration all skipped (no credentials). The resolver picked certifi 2026.10.19.
Ran (CI): test workflow run — both test jobs pass with pip 26.2.2.
Try it: in a clean venv, pip install . then python -c "import certifi; print(certifi.__version__)" prints 2026.10.19.
Not verified: the publish workflow on Python 3.12 (manual dispatch only); the v2 golden-drift job (skipped on PRs without PLANE_EE_CHECKOUT_TOKEN).

Rollout

  • Version bumped to 0.3.2. Users get the floor once 0.3.2 is published (run the publish workflow after merge). main has no other unreleased commits since v0.3.1.
  • Rollback: revert; no data changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The publish workflow now uses Python 3.10 instead of Python 3.8. The plane-sdk runtime dependencies now include certifi>=2026.10.19.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1778a

The security fix may not ship as intended, because the version number was not bumped and a publish of 0.3.1 would collide with the existing release. Bump the version before merging. Moving the publish job to a supported Python is a lower-priority follow-up.

Bump the package version to 0.3.2.

PyPI already contains plane-sdk version 0.3.1. The publish workflow reads version from pyproject.toml and uploads the resulting distribution. Keeping 0.3.1 will make this release reuse an existing version and fail.

Declare least-privilege permissions for the release job.

The workflow runs softprops/action-gh-release@v2, which requires contents: write. Without an explicit permissions block, the job inherits repository or organization defaults. A read-only default can make release creation fail, while broader defaults grant unnecessary access.

Comment thread .github/workflows/publish.yml Outdated
certifi 2026.10.19 removes the emSign ECC Root CA - G3, whose keys were
exposed in the eMudhra incident. Require it so installing plane-sdk
always gets the fixed bundle that requests uses.

Run the publish workflow on Python 3.10: pip 26.2.2, the fixed pip,
needs Python 3.10, so the pip upgrade on 3.8 kept a pip whose vendored
certifi still trusts G3.
Python 3.10 reached end of life on 2026-10-01. The package minimum
stays at 3.10; the build output is a pure-Python wheel either way.
The runner ships pip 26.2.1, whose vendored certifi still trusts the
emSign ECC Root CA - G3.
A venv set up from requirements.txt alone kept an older certifi, since
requests accepts any certifi from 2023.5.7.
