Summary

Support SVG favicons in fedify nodeinfo by rasterizing them to PNG with @resvg/resvg-wasm before readImage(), so the existing Jimp pipeline and terminal-art renderer stay unchanged (packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.ts).

Changes

  • Added @resvg/resvg-wasm to the CLI's deno.json and package.json.
  • Changed getFaviconUrl() to use the first declared SVG icon instead of /favicon.ico when no bitmap icon is declared. Declared bitmap icons are still preferred.
  • Added rasterizeSvg(), which converts SVG favicons to PNG before readImage().
    • SVG responses are detected by their Content-Type or by an <svg> tag near the start of the body.
    • The resvg module and its WebAssembly binary are loaded lazily in loadSvgRasterizer(), only when an SVG favicon is actually rendered.
    • The longer side of the SVG is fitted to the terminal art width (38 px), so a remote SVG cannot request an arbitrarily large bitmap.
    • Rendering failures fall through to the existing catch, so NodeInfo is still shown without a favicon.
  • Added tests for SVG rasterization, the size limit, and the fallback, and moved the console output capture into a captureOutput() helper shared with the existing favicon test.

Also, verified the standalone CLI built with deno compile: ran it outside the checkout against a test NodeInfo server that declares only an SVG favicon, exposed through a tunnel, and it rendered the SVG with the bundled WebAssembly module without downloading it at runtime.

AI disclosure

Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5) reviewed and revised my code, wrote the new tests, and helped draft this description. Codex (gpt-6.1-sol) helped with the dependency setup and verified that the changes satisfy the scope of the issue.

Declare @resvg/resvg-wasm in the CLI manifests and update both
lockfiles to prepare for converting SVG favicons to bitmap images.

Codex assisted with dependency setup guidance.

Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Expect SVG favicon URLs instead of the /favicon.ico fallback
for SVG-only pages, including uppercase extensions, query
strings and fragments, and icons identified only by MIME type.

Keep the existing bitmap preference test unchanged.

Ran the NodeInfo tests on Deno: the four updated tests fail
as expected before implementation, and the other 22 pass.

Codex assisted with reviewing the test changes.

Initialize the WebAssembly module in loadSvgRasterizer() only when
an SVG is actually rendered, so that it is loaded lazily.

- Fit SVGs in rasterizeSvg() to DEFAULT_IMAGE_WIDTH, the size at
which the ASCII art is shown in the terminal.
- Use the first declared SVG icon instead of /favicon.ico when no
  bitmap icon is declared.

Claude Code reviewed and revised the code, and Codex verified that the changes satisfy the scope of the issue.

fedify-dev#1238

Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Verify that the changes satisfy the scope of the issue:
- Rasterize an SVG favicon before readImage().
- Limit the size of a large SVG to the terminal art width.
- Fall back to rendering NodeInfo without a favicon when the SVG
  cannot be rendered.

Move the console output capture into captureOutput() so that the
new tests can share it with the existing favicon test.

Claude Code reviewed and revised the tests.

Walkthrough

fedify nodeinfo now selects SVG favicons when no bitmap icon is available. It detects and rasterizes SVG content before image decoding, while retaining bitmap preference and the existing text fallback when SVG rendering fails.

Most SVG and bitmap favicons remain supported, but SVG favicons relying on text may render without that text. This is a narrow, low-risk functionality gap.

Explanation

The implementation satisfies the coding requirements in #1238. getFaviconUrl() prefers bitmap icons and retains an eligible SVG as a fallback. runNodeInfo() detects SVG content by Content-Type or an early &lt;svg match, then calls rasterizeSvg() before readImage(). loadSvgRasterizer() performs the dynamic module and WebAssembly load only when rasterization is needed. rasterizeSvg() fits the longer image side to DEFAULT_IMAGE_WIDTH (38). Existing error handling preserves the no-favicon fallback. packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.test.ts adds selector, rendering, size-limit, and failure tests. Its network tests use mocked fetch routes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within #1238. The CLI source adds SVG selection and rasterization support. The CLI manifests add the required @resvg/resvg-wasm dependency. The focused tests cover the new behavior and share output-capture support with existing tests. The changelog entries document the requested user-visible feature. No unrelated behavior is established by the reviewed changes.

Apply the size filter only to bitmap candidates.

An SVG link with sizes="32x32" is skipped before the new SVG fallback can retain it. If it is the only declared icon, discovery returns /favicon.ico instead, although the SVG can scale to the required size. Classify SVG candidates before applying the bitmap size filter.

Update the icon candidate filtering around the size check to classify SVG
candidates before applying the minimum-size filter. Apply that filter only to
bitmap candidates so an SVG with a small declared size remains eligible for
fallback discovery.

Bound dimensions before rendering.

Resvg rounds its dimension getters. For an SVG with width="0.00001" and height="0.49", both getters return zero, so this selects width fitting. Resvg then uses the unrounded dimensions and allocates a roughly 38 × 1,862,000 image. A remote favicon can exhaust memory or terminate the command before the fallback runs. Use unrounded dimensions, or reject ambiguous dimensions, before rendering. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Provide fonts to the WASM renderer.

Resvg WASM starts with an empty font database and loads fonts only from supplied buffers. SVG favicons containing <text> therefore lose their text; a text-only favicon renders blank without triggering the fallback. Supply a bundled fallback font through font.fontBuffers and test a text-based favicon. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
