This pull request publishes DrFed as an OCI image at ghcr.io/fedify-dev/drfed for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64. CI builds the image from the same verified tarballs as the npm packages, tags it with the same version, and tests it on every pull request. It also adds PGlite and PostgreSQL Compose examples and an installation guide. Inside the image, drfed-server and drfed-web listen on 0.0.0.0 by default.
The guide covers Docker, Podman, and other container tools on separate pages instead of Docker alone, following the comment on portability.
Pull requests test the image with Podman as well as Docker. Releases are built with Docker only.
Provenance is an actions/attest attestation of the index digest; BuildKit attestations are disabled and no SBOM is published.
Anonymous pulls need a maintainer to make the package public after the first main build. Until then, the anonymous pull check fails latest and next publications and only warns on dev.

Walkthrough
This change adds an official multi-platform DrFed container image, container-aware configuration defaults, Compose deployment examples, image build and test tooling, and automated image publication with provenance checks. It also adds installation and maintenance documentation.
Changes: Container image delivery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Container runtime and defaults docker/Containerfile, docker/Dockerfile, docker/docker-entrypoint.sh, packages/drfed/src/*, packages/drfed/package.json
The runtime image installs versioned DrFed packages and runs as node. The container marker sets default listen hosts for the server and web commands. Lazy defaults and environment lookup support those configuration values.
The tooling builds and validates OCI layouts from package artifacts. Docker and Podman build plans, engine detection, guarded layout replacement, and image build and check tasks are added.
Compose examples cover PGlite, PostgreSQL, and a separate web frontend. Image scenarios test commands, database operations, backup and restore, upgrades, login, and shutdown. The packaging smoke test uses the shared HTTP helper.
CI builds and tests platform images, assembles an OCI index, and gates release jobs on image publication. Release tooling pushes versioned images, advances channel tags, and checks or attaches attestations.
Version alignment and installation guidance scripts/images/compose-tags.mts, scripts/bump-versions.mts, scripts/check-versions.mts, docker/upgrade-source.json, docs/installation/container/*, docs/manual/*, docs/reference/cli.md, README.md, CHANGES.md, changes.d/*, CONTRIBUTING.md, DEPLOY.md, docs/.vitepress/config.mts
Version checks cover Compose image tags and the upgrade source. Documentation describes container installation, configuration, operations, and publishing. Deployment builds can pass the published image version into container examples.
Resolve the version-bump and backup/restore risks before merging. The Podman guide also needs corrections so readers can run Compose and select a provider on Podman 4.9.

Explanation
Open issue #135 is directly linked. The whole-PR summary shows the requested image, entrypoint, non-root runtime, writable data volume, linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 builds, and container defaults for 0.0.0.0:8888. Image scenarios cover all four commands, migration checks, HTTP serving, shutdown and restart, PGlite locking and backup/restore, PostgreSQL account creation, separate web operation, and upgrade retention. Compose examples and documentation cover PGlite, PostgreSQL, migrations, persistence, backups, restores, upgrades, mail, external origins, and reverse proxies. The workflow builds from verified package tarballs, tests pull requests, publishes matching release tags, protects channel ordering, handles reruns, adds OCI metadata and provenance, and checks anonymous pulls. The reported maintainer package-visibility step and unreported command results are operational verification items, not concrete missing code requirements.

Include failure handling in both displayed scripts.
These region imports omit set -e, although both source scripts place it before their region markers. If tar fails in a copied backup snippet, mv can replace a valid backup with a partial archive. If extraction fails in a copied restore snippet, the next command still starts DrFed. Move set -e inside both imported regions. The image tests run the complete scripts, so they do not cover this difference. (vitepress.dev)

Reject build metadata before writing Compose image tags.
The existing SemVer check accepts 1.2.3+build, but setComposeImageTags(version) writes ghcr.io/fedify-dev/drfed:1.2.3+build. OCI image tags cannot contain +. The version check then accepts the same invalid tag, so this supported bump command leaves unusable Compose examples. Reject build metadata before changing files, or define one image-tag normalization rule for both the bump and check commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Remove DOCKER_CONFIG from the inherited fixture environment.
The env filter removes ACTIONS_*, GH_TOKEN, GITHUB_*, and GIT_*. It keeps DOCKER_CONFIG. The stub at lines 257-271 forwards process.env.DOCKER_CONFIG on every call. handleCrane reads any defined dockerConfig as an anonymous read. So if a contributor's shell exports DOCKER_CONFIG, every authenticated crane call from run() in scripts/release.mts takes the anonymous branch:
Line 96 asserts that the directory is empty. A real Docker config directory is not empty, so the assertion fails.
If the directory is empty, publicPackage = false still makes digest, manifest, push, and tag return UNAUTHORIZED. It should affect only the checkAnonymousPull read.
The fixture then fails for reasons that have nothing to do with the code under test. Hosted runners do not set DOCKER_CONFIG, so CI passes. Local mise run test runs can still fail.

Non-blocking follow-up, outside the scope of this PR: main.yaml now combines general CI, releases, and documentation builds and deployments. This makes the execution conditions harder to follow and leaves PR runs with many skipped deployment jobs.
I suggest separating general CI, releases, and documentation validation into distinct workflow entry points, with reusable workflows for shared checks. Documentation validation could use path filters, but these should cover its inputs beyond docs/, including CHANGES.md, embedded files under docker/, and build dependencies and configuration.
Release documentation should retain its published-version injection and deployment ordering. The split would also need to update the preview workflow’s references and required-check settings so that path-filtered workflows do not leave PRs waiting for checks that never run.
defaultPgliteDataPath() evaluated homedir() as a default argument even
when an absolute XDG_DATA_HOME or LOCALAPPDATA replaced it. The home
directory is now looked up only when no such override applies, so an
arbitrary container UID with neither HOME nor a passwd entry can still
use the default data directory. Callers may pass the home directory
as a string or as a function.
Claude Code implemented the change from a plan for the container image
that the contributor reviewed, and added the test that a failing home
lookup is not reached when an absolute override exists. Verified with
the package tests and the full mise run test.

A container must listen on 0.0.0.0 to be reachable through a published
port, but neither an image environment variable nor an image TOML file
can provide that default: DRFED_LISTEN would override a user's TOML,
and a bundled TOML is silently replaced once a user selects a file.
The official image will set the marker DRFED_CONTAINER=1. When it is
true, the default listen host of drfed-server and drfed-web becomes
0.0.0.0, keeping ports 8888 and 3000. The value keeps the source
"default", so every CLI, environment and TOML setting still wins, and
--help and --print-config show it.
Configuration bindings now expose their environment lookup, and accept
lazily computed defaults, so that building a parser or completing a
command still reads no environment variable.
Claude Code implemented the change from a plan the contributor
reviewed. The first version read the marker while building parsers,
which the existing completion tests caught; the lazy default fixes it.
Verified with unit tests for the helper, --print-config precedence
tests for drfed-server and drfed-web, and the full mise run test.

Move requestInstalledWeb() from test-packaging.mts into smoke-http.mts
without changing its behavior, so that the container image tests can
send requests with an explicit Host header too; fetch() cannot.
Claude Code moved the function as part of the container image work.

Add docker/Containerfile, with docker/Dockerfile as a symbolic link to
it, for the official ghcr.io/fedify-dev/drfed image. The image is
built from the five package tarballs of a release run, or from a
packed workspace, never from a registry dist-tag:
- The base is node:26.12.1-trixie-slim pinned by digest; Alpine
cannot lock PGlite directories, as fs-native-extensions ships glibc
prebuilds only.
- All five tarballs are installed with one local npm install under
/opt/drfed, on the target platform.
- The image runs as the node user, sets DRFED_CONTAINER=1 and
XDG_DATA_HOME=/var/lib, so the default PGlite directory is
/var/lib/drfed/data without selecting PGlite.
- A POSIX sh entrypoint runs drfed-server by default, passes leading
options to it, runs any other command as given, and always execs.
- OCI labels record the source, version, revision, license, base
image, build identity, and tarball integrities. The file uses no
BuildKit-only syntax.
`mise run image:build` writes an OCI layout per platform with BuildKit
attestations off and timestamps rewritten to the commit time.
`mise run image:test` loads that exact layout, checks the loaded image
ID against the layout digest, and runs the four commands, the PGlite,
PostgreSQL and separate frontend Compose examples under docker/, the
PGlite lock failure, graceful shutdown and container replacement, the
backup and restore snippets, and an upgrade from the release named in
docker/upgrade-source.json, initially @drfed/drfed@0.1.0.
Claude Code wrote the files from a plan the contributor reviewed; the
contributor asked for the Containerfile name with a Dockerfile symlink.
Loading the layout replaced the planned loopback registry, which the
Docker Desktop daemon could not reach. Verified by running
mise run image:build and mise run image:test on linux/arm64, and an
emulated linux/amd64 build.

The Compose examples under docker/ name the image by the checked-in
package version. mise bump-version now rewrites those tags, and
mise run check:versions fails when a tag differs from the package
version or when docker/upgrade-source.json names anything other than
an exact npm version or a digest-pinned image.
Claude Code implemented the change from the reviewed plan. Verified
by running check:versions against a deliberately stale tag and with
mise run check.

Add image subcommands to scripts/release.mts, each with a mise task:
- release:image-index merges the two tested platform layouts of a
run into one deterministically serialized OCI image index, with
OCI annotations, the build identity, and tarball integrities. A
rerun verifies the stored index against the layouts.
- release:image-push pushes the index as the immutable <version>
tag with crane. An existing tag with the same digest is skipped,
and a different digest fails.
- release:image-attestation checks the provenance attestation on
GitHub and in the registry. actions/attest stores on GitHub
before attaching to the registry, so when only the GitHub copy
exists, the stored bundle that meets the build constraints is
attached with @sigstore/oci instead of creating another one.
- release:image-tags moves the dev, latest, or next channel tag only
forward, using the npm ordering rules on the org.drfed.build
annotation, then resolves the channel without credentials. A
private package fails latest and next builds and warns on dev.
GitHub Releases also attach image-manifest.json, which ties the image
digest to the release tarballs. The channel ordering shared with npm
moves into newerChannelBuild(). scripts/test-release-image.mts covers
these steps with stub crane and gh commands and runs as part of
mise run check:release.
Claude Code implemented the subcommands and fixtures from the reviewed
plan; the anonymous pull check follows the issue author's comment.
Verified with mise run check:release, including the existing npm
fixtures.

- image-pr builds the image from the packed workspace and tests it on
linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 runners for pull requests and other
branches, without uploading anything.
- image builds each platform from the verified tarball artifact of a
release run, tests it, and keeps the layout as an artifact; a rerun
reuses it instead of rebuilding. Without that artifact, it fails
closed once the version is on npm, so a published version never
gets new image bytes.
- image-index merges the layouts into one OCI image index artifact.
- publish now requires image-index, so a broken image blocks npm.
- image-publish pushes the index, attests it with actions/attest,
verifies the attestation from GitHub and the registry, and moves
the channel tag. It rechecks the release tag before actions/attest
writes to the registry. It alone has packages: write and the
attestation permissions, and it shares the npm-publish concurrency
group.
- github-release and docs-canary wait for image-publish, and the docs
job passes the published version as DRFED_IMAGE_VERSION.
A composite action switches the runners to the containerd image store,
which the tests rely on. jactionlint allows actions/attest by tag, and
the release:tag-target task exposes the existing tag check to the
workflow.
Claude Code wrote the jobs from the reviewed plan, then added the
fail-closed rebuild check and the tag recheck after a review. Verified
with mise run check:workflows; the jobs run for the first time in CI.

Add docs/installation/docker.md as the first Installation page and the
target of the Installation link. It covers first startup, account
creation and login, configuration shared by the server and management
commands, the one-process PGlite rule, PostgreSQL, migrations, a
separate frontend container, volume ownership, backups, restores,
upgrades, exposing DrFed to the fediverse, and the image tags and
provenance. The Compose files and the backup and restore scripts are
included from docker/ as code snippets, so the documentation shows the
files that CI runs.
When DRFED_IMAGE_VERSION is set, the documentation build replaces the
image tag in code blocks with that version, so deployed examples name
an image the same run published.
Also mention the image in the existing installation, self-hosting,
configuration and CLI pages and the READMEs, describe the image build
and release rules in CONTRIBUTING.md and DEPLOY.md, and add a changelog
entry.
Claude Code wrote the pages from the reviewed plan. Verified with
mise run build:docs, with and without DRFED_IMAGE_VERSION, and with
mise run check.

The image build and tests no longer depend on Docker. The boundary
between engines is the OCI image layout: image:build writes one image
manifest with gzip layers and the same drfed-image.json with Docker or
Podman, and the tests load any such layout into either engine, find
the image by the layout's manifest or config digest, and tag it under
a local name.
- Move the image scripts under scripts/images/. layout.mts keeps
the layout and metadata helpers that release.mts uses, build.mts
builds, engines.mts holds every engine difference as data and pure
calculations, and engine.mts runs them. The scenarios under
scripts/images/test/scenarios/ name no engine.
- Add image:build --engine, and replace image:test with test:image,
test:image:docker, and test:image:podman. test:image runs both
engines one after another, or at the same time with --parallel.
A missing engine binary is skipped unless --require is given; an
engine that cannot be reached fails. check:images tests the
engine calculations.
- Build with Podman through podman build and podman save --format
oci-dir, which also works through the remote client on macOS, with
--identity-label=false and --layers=false so that no label or
intermediate image is added.
- Run Podman's Compose provider without DOCKER_HOST, which would
otherwise point it at another engine.
- Take Compose projects down with the environment and directory they
were created with, and fail the run when cleanup leaves anything
behind or cannot remove it.
- In CI, build and test pull requests with each engine on both
architectures. Release images are still built with Docker, and
the exact layout is tested with Docker, then Podman.
- Split the installation guide into an overview of the image and
pages for Docker, Podman, and other container tools. The Docker
and Podman pages share one Compose workflow, and the documentation
build rewrites its leading docker commands for Podman with the same
function the Podman tests use to run the backup and restore
snippets. The page for other tools separates Compose
implementations, Docker-compatible command lines, and tools that
need their own configuration, since the OCI specifications define
no such commands.
#135
Claude Code implemented the plan and its verification; Codex reviewed
the result and reported the Compose cleanup and the OCI wording
problems, which Claude Code then fixed.

image:build no longer deletes its --output path before building. It
builds into a staging directory next to the output and moves the
finished layout into place. An existing output is replaced only when
it is empty or exactly a layout that image:build wrote: blobs,
index.json, a valid oci-layout marker, and drfed-image.json naming the
five DrFed packages. Anything else, such as the repository root or
another project's OCI layout, is refused before the build starts.
The version check and the version bump now require exactly one
ghcr.io/fedify-dev/drfed image line in each Compose example. A missing,
quoted, misspelled, or repeated line fails check:versions, and the bump
validates every example in memory before writing any file.
docker/backup.sh writes to drfed-data.tgz.partial and renames it into
place only after a complete backup, so a failed backup keeps the earlier
one. An exit trap starts the server again only if it was running
before. forEngine() now also rewrites a docker command that starts a
command substitution, so the Podman page and tests run the same script.
The PGlite scenario covers a failed backup and a backup of a stopped
server.
The image-pr jobs are skipped when the version job fails.
The review findings addressed here were written by Codex. Claude Code
implemented the fixes and their tests. They were run locally with
Docker 29.9.2 and Podman 6.1.4 on linux/arm64.

The blockers are the deterministic check:release failure, the Podman CI failures, the backup and restore snippets that lose set -e in the documentation, and the invalid OCI tag from bump-versions. The remaining comments are non-blocking. The image license label waits on #169.

git commit-tree runs without an author or committer identity. This fixture forces GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL to an empty file and sets GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1, so the command fails on every machine, not only in CI, and mise run check stops before the other checks. The git commit above already passes -c user.name and -c user.email; do the same here, or set GIT_AUTHOR_* and GIT_COMMITTER_* in the fixture environment.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
set -e sits outside the # region backup marker, so the VitePress include at docs/installation/container/parts/compose-workflow.md renders the snippet without it. If tar fails, the copied script still runs mv and can replace a good backup with a partial file, which contradicts the comment inside the region. docker/restore.sh has the same problem with its region, so a failed extraction still starts DrFed. Move each set -e inside its region, and consider running the rendered snippet in the image test so the documented text cannot drift from the tested file.

isSemver accepts build metadata, so mise bump-version 1.2.3+build reaches this line and writes ghcr.io/fedify-dev/drfed:1.2.3+build into the Compose files. + is not valid in an OCI tag, and neither check:versions nor the Compose tag matcher rejects it. This assertion fails in the image-pr (podman, amd64) job: compose stop exits 1, and the assertion prints no output, so the cause is hidden. Include stdout and stderr in the failure message and investigate the Podman path. The same step passes under Docker.

The socket timeout is never cleared. After a response completes, the request can return to the keep-alive pool; ten seconds later this callback destroys the shared socket, which may abort a later in-flight request. That matches the podman/arm64 failure, where srvx aborts the request and the server exits with an unhandled AbortError. Clear the timeout when the response ends, or use agent: false. The server-side crash on an aborted request deserves its own issue.

This list duplicates packageOrder in scripts/release.mts, and the package names appear again in scripts/test-release.mts, scripts/test-release-image.mts, scripts/test-packaging.mts, and docker/Containerfile. Adding a package means updating all of them. Consider one scripts/packages.mts that exports the order, and a check task that compares it with the package directories and the Containerfile's tarball list. The remaining manual steps, such as the tsconfig files and the build:backend filter in mise.toml, could go in a short checklist in CONTRIBUTING.md.

Consider adding a check:containerfile task here with hadolint, pinned in [tools]. check already depends on check:*, so the task would run automatically. Lint docker/Containerfile only; docker/Dockerfile is a symbolic link to it. A .hadolint.yaml can hold any rule exceptions. The shell scripts under docker/ are outside hadolint's scope, so a check:shell task with shellcheck would cover them.

This label bakes AGPL-3.0-only into every image, but the source headers and the documentation footer say AGPL version 3 or later, and #169 tracks the decision. An OCI label cannot be changed for a published image, so align this with the outcome of #169 before 0.2.0, or drop the label until the decision is made. scripts/images/layout.mts repeats the same value for the index annotations.

drfed-web listens on 3000 inside the image, and docker/compose.web.yaml publishes that port, but the image exposes only 8888. EXPOSE does not enforce anything, but listing 3000 avoids surprises with docker run -P.

The overlay keeps the base file's 127.0.0.1:8888:8888 mapping, so the backend stays published to the host even when the frontend runs in its own container. If this example is meant to expose only the frontend, override the port list here or move the mapping out of the base file. As written, the backend is reachable on the host as well.
The release image fixture runs Git with an empty global configuration
and strips GIT_* variables from its environment, so `git commit-tree`
had no author or committer identity. Hosts that can derive one from
their name passed, but GitHub-hosted runners failed `check:release`
with "Author identity unknown". Give it the same identity as the
`git commit` call of the same fixture.

Most Compose calls in the image tests asserted only the exit code, so
a failed `compose stop` gave no explanation. Project.succeed() now
fails with the command, its stdout, and its stderr. Project.call()
stays for calls that are expected to fail.
The amd64 job then showed "rootless netns: kill network process:
permission denied". Ubuntu 26.04's AppArmor profile for pasta refuses
the signal from Podman, as reported in LP#2154379, which has no
released fix. The new pasta-apparmor action adds the rule published in
that report. It runs in both jobs that use Podman, image-pr and image,
because a release tests the image with Podman as well, and does nothing
on runners without the profile or with the rule.
The arm64 job failed intermittently for another reason. Podman 4.9.3
reports a container's network by name, while Compose compares it with
the network ID, so `compose run` replaced the running postgres service.
DNS lookups of postgres then stalled, a login request outlasted the
test's 10-second timeout, and the client's disconnect crashed the
server with AbortError. The arm64 runners move to ubuntu-26.04-arm,
which has the same Podman 5.7.0 and Compose 5.1.3 as amd64.
CI therefore no longer tests Podman 4.9.3, the version in Ubuntu 24.04.
The Podman page describes both problems and their workarounds. The
server crash on a client disconnect is not fixed here and needs its own
issue.
Verified with `mise run check` and with `mise run test:image:docker` on
linux/arm64. A privileged Docker container on arm64 reproduced the
failure with rootless Podman 4.9.3 and Compose v2.38.2: three of four
rounds stalled, and one server exited with status 1. In the same setup,
three rounds each passed with `run --no-deps` and with Ubuntu 26.04,
Podman 5.7.0, and Compose v5.1.3. An Ubuntu 26.04 arm64 virtual machine
failed the image tests without the AppArmor rule and passed with it.
None of these changes has run on the CI runners yet.

Claude Code investigated both failures, wrote the action, the runner
change and the documentation, and restored the harness change from an
earlier test commit at the contributor's direction.

Document the required Compose provider.
podman compose is only a wrapper around an external provider. A user with Podman but without docker-compose or podman-compose cannot run the documented commands. Add an explicit prerequisite and installation command. (docs.podman.io)

Use the correct provider configuration key for Podman 4.9.
The guide mentions Podman 4.9 immediately above, but this instruction uses compose_providers. Podman 4.9 documents the singular compose_provider; newer versions document compose_providers. A Podman 4.9 user may not change the provider as instructed. Document the key by version, or recommend PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER and identify the [engine] table. (docs.podman.io)
