Adds reusable parsed-document validation for #151 through @drfed/models/document, giving the structured builder and raw editor one contract for reasons, severity, and original nested field/list paths.

  • validateDocument() checks all 30 activity types through their applicable shared rules, plus supported Object, actor, collection, and Link types. Optional vocabulary properties stay optional. Unknown custom properties survive successful validation as opaque JSON with compatibility warnings.
  • prepareDocument() checks documents against trusted server-supplied authority outcomes and creation values. It reports denied identities and conflicting fields separately from vocabulary errors, and proposes missing IDs, actor/attribution fields, or timestamps supplied by the caller.
  • Both functions preserve input. Normalization returns explicit changes and an independent preview only when checking completes without errors and changes are needed. Empty arrays on supported properties receive omission previews. Previews retain custom fields and are revalidated. Neither function performs remote lookups, permission queries, resource writes, or delivery.

Refs #151. Implements the shared APIs for #151. Editor integration belongs to #140/#141, and write-operation integration belongs to #152.

How it works

Parsed document
  → validateDocument()
  → check types, properties, and nested values
  → return diagnostics + optional normalization preview and changes

Parsed document + trusted authority outcomes and server-owned values
  → prepareDocument()
  → run document checks → check caller configuration before error returns
  → report authority failures and field conflicts
  → build preview → validateDocument(preview)
  → return diagnostics + preview and changes

Errors or incomplete checks prevent a preview. Neither flow changes the input or saves anything; no preview is returned when no changes are needed.

Scope and integration

Preparation options must come from trusted server code, not editor input. The creation policy checks supplied fields against caller-declared server-owned values: missing fields are proposed additions, supported null absence produces explicit replacements, matching supported singleton values are retained, and conflicts block the preview. Explicit null IDs remain invalid. It does not impose those fields as requirements on arbitrary documents.

Caller configuration is checked before document errors or authority denials stop preparation. Missing server-owned parents, invalid semantic field names, duplicate declarations, and invalid trusted values throw TypeError. Document failures that prevent resolving a target or alias remain document diagnostics. Authority paths are caller-supplied diagnostic locations, rather than writable target declarations.

#152 owns permission decisions, allocation of IDs/timestamps, preview-to-commit coordination, transaction-time permission rechecks, persistence, and adapting createObject. A successful preparation result is not an authorization token. The creation-field contract is documented in packages/models/README.md and recorded in the #152 policy handoff.

Question receives shared intransitive checks; poll-specific choice and closing rules remain with #155. Type arrays, unknown types, known unimplemented fields, and unsupported context forms produce support errors. Remaining Object-property coverage is deferred beyond 0.2.0 and tracked in #168. Context interpretation uses an explicit offline profile, not full JSON-LD expansion. Preserving custom fields here does not guarantee their preservation through Fedify sending. Vocabulary dependencies match the shared catalog, currently 2.4.3.

Validation

  • Models build and TypeScript checks passed.
  • All 255 focused document/preparation tests passed, covering JSON fixtures, caller-configuration errors, authority outcomes, conflicts, aliases, and independent previews for shared source objects.
  • Scoped lint, formatting, changelog, whitespace, and repository commit checks passed.

AI assistance

I used OpenAI Codex with gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6-astra to research references, implement the validator and preparation API, write fixtures/tests, audit coverage, and draft documentation and this PR description. I directed the scope and policy decisions, including offline validation, single-type support, custom-property warnings, server-owned creation fields, and the #152 boundary. Codex subagents performed the focused automated verification and formatting.

.p.s.

The massive lines of code is due to fixtures. I will remove it if it's not necessary for this.

Preparation previews are correct, but the change list for an empty server-owned field can contain both a removal and a replacement for the same path. Editor integration that handles each change separately could drop the field. The README also has minor formatting and wording mismatches. None of these should block the merge, but they are worth fixing.

Export validateDocument() and typed diagnostic reasons from
@drfed/models/document. Check plain document roots and basic Like documents
with scalar actor/object references, and report unsupported cases as incomplete.
Add fixture-backed tests, a JSON-LD research probe, draft contracts and coverage
fixtures, package documentation, and a changelog fragment for issue #151.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to research issue #151 and its parent contract,
draft the validation design and fixtures, and implement the initial function.
I selected offline validation, explicit normalization previews, custom-type
and context policies, and the reason identifier with restricted string values.
Codex generated the research script, design documents, fixtures, implementation,
tests, package export, and release notes. Codex performed automated builds,
type and lint checks, focused and repository tests, installed package checks,
and development startup checks. I have not recorded manual verification in
the target environment. This is an initial slice, not completion of issue #151.

Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Validate Like actor and object references individually or in nonempty flat
lists. Preserve order and duplicates, report exact entry paths, and keep
unimplemented embedded and undecided list forms explicitly incomplete.
Expand the focused tests and update the coverage, contract, and release notes.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement the next reference-list validation
slice and explain its structure. I chose to remove the provisional value-count
budget for now and keep the diagnostic-count cap, with its rationale and a
measurement follow-up documented before release. Codex generated the list
handling, tests, and documentation updates. Codex built the models package,
ran its type checks, lint and formatting checks, and verified all 21 focused
validator tests. I have not recorded manual verification in the target
environment. The full validation scope of issue #151 remains incomplete.

Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Extract safe list traversal and per-call diagnostic collection from the
reference checks and validation coordinator. Keep checks reporting directly
through a callback without an intermediate finding type or adapter. Preserve
existing paths, messages, completeness, diagnostic limits, and public types.
Document the responsibilities before adding embedded-object validation.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to research Fedify's checking and reporting
structure and refactor the document validator. After reviewing the proposed
intermediate finding type, I chose direct reporting callbacks while keeping
traversal and diagnostic collection separate. Codex generated the refactor and
plan update, built the models package, ran its type and lint checks, verified
all 21 existing focused tests unchanged, and compared all 31 fixture outputs
with their pre-refactor results. I have not recorded manual verification in
the target environment. This refactor adds no new validation coverage.

Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Support Create and standalone Note documents alongside Like. Check embedded
Notes with inherited contexts and original nested field paths, including list
indexes. Check id, attributedTo references, and string content while preserving
input and reporting unimplemented forms as incomplete. Share the existing
reporter and diagnostic cap across parent and child checks. Expand focused
fixture coverage and update the plan, package documentation, and changelog.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement the next embedded-object validation
slice, explain the new helpers, and inline the single-use content check. Codex
generated the implementation, tests, and documentation, and added a local
complexity-rule exception to keep the property checks together after inlining.
Codex built the models package and verified all 31 focused validator tests,
models type checking, scoped lint and formatting, and changelog checks. I asked
for task-related tests only; the full test suite was not run. I have not
recorded manual verification in the target environment. Full vocabulary and
nested-activity coverage remain unfinished.

Support Undo, Accept, and Follow alongside Like, Create, and Note at the
root and within activity object values. Preserve depth-first diagnostic order
and original nested paths using an explicit work stack. Detect cycles along
the active ancestor chain while allowing shared objects in separate branches.
Retain the shared diagnostic cap without introducing depth or value budgets.
Expand fixture coverage and update the contract, plan, and documentation.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement nested activity validation, explain
the traversal structure, and commit the result. After discussing why the
checking helper is nested, I agreed to keep it scoped to the traversal and its
shared state. Codex generated the implementation, tests, and documentation.
Codex built the models package, verified all 42 focused validator tests,
including deep nesting, cycle detection, and source-order diagnostics, and
ran models type checking, scoped lint and formatting, and changelog checks.
I requested task-related tests only; the full test suite was not run.
I have not recorded manual verification in the target environment. Full
vocabulary coverage and the offline Fedify adapter remain unfinished.

Check target, origin, result, and instrument using the existing object-value
rules for references, supported embedded types, and nonempty flat lists.
Preserve nested paths, source order, input values, and cycle detection without
adding activity types or making optional properties required. Add four
fixtures and focused relation tests, and update coverage and release notes.

Record the scope review of issues #151 and #149: the offline Fedify adapter
is optional later work, not a prerequisite for the shared validator. Keep
remaining vocabulary coverage next in the implementation plan.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to recheck whether the offline Fedify adapter was
required, defer it in the documents, and implement the four activity properties
before adding more types. Codex reviewed the issue and decision record,
generated the property checks, fixtures, tests, and documentation, and updated
the existing changelog entry. Codex built the models package and verified all
56 focused validator tests, models type checking, scoped lint and formatting,
and changelog checks. I requested task-related tests only;

Admit Add, Announce, Block, Delete, Dislike, Flag, Ignore, Invite, Join,
Leave, Listen, Move, Offer, Read, Reject, Remove, TentativeAccept,
TentativeReject, Update, and View through Fedify inheritance and the existing
shared activity rules. Add a valid fixture for each, representative invalid
relations, and nested subtype checks. Update the coverage matrix, package
documentation, and changelog, and mark the first remaining-work task complete.

Record that the explicit implemented-type set is a conservative coverage
mechanism rather than a specification requirement. It can be replaced by
reliable rule-coverage detection while retaining the 0.2.0 Fedify type boundary.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to organize the remaining work, implement the
ordinary activity type task, and document the possibility of removing the
explicit type list. Codex generated the type registrations, fixtures, tests,
and documentation. At my request, a Codex subagent handled verification and
formatting: the models build, all 99 focused validator tests, models type
checking, scoped lint and formatting, and changelog checks passed. The final
document-only note was formatted and checked separately.

Admit Travel and Question through Fedify's intransitive inheritance. Apply
shared checks to standalone and nested Create/Update documents, rejecting
non-null object properties without making actor, content, or choices required.
Keep Question's poll-specific fields explicitly unsupported for issue #155,
and document how its choice and closing rules join the shared checker.

Add fixtures for shared valid forms, inapplicable objects, nested failures,
and pending poll fields. Preserve the revised type ordering and use existing
fixtures for the unsupported poll-field boundary instead of a redundant test.
Update the coverage matrix, plan, package documentation, and changelog.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement the remaining intransitive type
recognition and document the Question integration boundary with #155. Codex
reviewed that issue and generated the implementation, fixtures, tests, and
documentation. I reordered the types and reviewed the redundant boundary test;
Codex preserved my ordering and the remaining fixture coverage. At my request,
a Codex subagent handled formatting and verification: the models build,
113 focused validator tests, models type checking, scoped lint and formatting,
and changelog checks passed.

Refs: #151

Add Object and Article, the five core actor types, all four collection/page
variants, and Link/Mention to the implemented vocabulary coverage. Reuse
shared embedded traversal and Fedify inheritance, check collection counts
and navigation ranges, and validate Link metadata with original source paths.
Recognize Link classes separately from Fedify's entity registry and use
Intl.Locale directly for language tags. Preserve input, reference order,
and duplicates without fetching resources.

Update fixtures, focused tests, package documentation, and changelog. Keep common-property and
representation work explicit as the next task.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement tasks 3a through 3d and explain
Fedify type recognition and value validation. Codex generated the scoped
implementation, fixtures, tests, and documentation, preserving my type ordering.
I reviewed the Link validation approach and asked to keep its checks while
replacing the LanguageString wrapper with Intl.Locale. At my request, Codex
subagents handled formatting and verification: the models build, 180 focused
document tests, models type checking, scoped lint, formatting, changelog
checks, and diff whitespace checks passed.

I also asked Codex to keep the planning drafts local and exclude them from
this branch history. Codex preserved the implementation and local drafts,
removed the draft files from each commit, and folded in the fixture
description cleanup.

Refs: #151

Check common text, language maps, explicit localized text values, actor
usernames, timestamps, and addressing. Reuse MIMEType, Intl.Locale, and
Temporal for format checks while retaining original diagnostic paths.
Treat null list entries as absent and enforce functional-property
multiplicity without changing source arrays or reference order.

Warn on empty addressing and offer an independent omission preview only
after complete validation without errors. Keep relative IRIs, empty
non-addressing lists, nested lists, and unsupported text/date forms explicit.
Update acceptance fixtures, focused tests, package documentation, and the
existing changelog fragment.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to implement task 4 and explain why the value
checks are needed. I approved treating null entries as absent and accepting
functional arrays with at most one non-null value. Codex generated the
implementation, fixtures, tests, and documentation, delegating format checks
to existing parsers where applicable. At my request, Codex subagents handled
formatting and verification: the models build, 198 focused validator tests,
models type checking, scoped lint, formatting, changelog checks, and diff
whitespace checks passed. My planning documents remain local and excluded
from Git.

Refs: #151

Use allowlisted Fedify bundled contexts and a synchronous interpreter for
simple inline aliases, prefixes, and language/list containers. Preserve
original field names, values, indexes, and nested context scope when applying
existing property checks and normalization previews. Check functional aliases
together without merging their source values.

Keep standard-term overrides, mismatched coercions, complex context forms,
and arbitrary custom properties explicitly unsupported. Add the shared-version
vocabulary runtime dependency, acceptance fixtures, processor comparison tests,
package documentation, and changelog updates.

AI provenance: I asked Codex and a subagent to investigate Fedify context
expansion, then implement task 5. I directed that arbitrary custom properties
remain unsupported. The experiment showed that expansion removes nulls and
merges aliases without providing original paths. Codex implemented a bounded
synchronous interpreter over Fedify's bundled term data, retaining source
values and paths. Verification caught that subject is already a standard
term; Codex changed admitted alias examples to payload and kept standard-term
overrides blocked. At my request, subagents handled formatting and verification:
the models build, 213 focused tests, type checking, scoped lint, formatting,
changelog checks, and whitespace checks passed. Research probes and planning
notes are outside this implementation commit.

Refs: #151

Explain that string arrays with multiple entries are unsupported type
combinations. Give singleton and empty arrays a separate unsupported-array
message, and clarify the diagnostic for multiple type fields. Preserve
existing reasons, source paths, completeness, and single-type validation.
Inspect array slots without invoking accessors.

AI provenance: I asked Codex to keep type-combination validation outside
scope while clearly reporting unsupported combinations to callers. I clarified
that the combination message applies to string arrays with more than one
entry. Codex generated the diagnostic wording and safe shape check. At my
request, a Codex subagent verified formatting, scoped lint, models type
checking and build, all 213 existing focused validator tests, and whitespace.
My planning notes remain local and excluded from Git.

Correct the mixed-type fixture to match unsupported type-array handling and iterate all 138 fixtures directly. Document validation inputs, diagnostics, previews, property coverage, and integration limits in the models README.

I used Codex to audit fixture coverage, correct the stale expectation, remove the fixture selection list, and revise the consumer documentation. I kept the planning documents local and excluded them from this commit. Codex verified the models build, all 219 focused document tests, scoped formatting and lint, and whitespace checks. I used gpt-6.1-sol for the changes and gpt-6-astra to finalize the commit.

Allow opaque custom properties on supported types to survive successful validation and normalization previews. Check their JSON safety without interpreting their semantics, while keeping unknown types, unsupported contexts, and unimplemented known properties blocking. Update fixtures, consumer documentation, and release notes.

I asked Codex to implement warning-only custom-property preservation and document the revised policy. Codex added JSON-safe opaque traversal, regression tests, and documentation updates. I retained my comment edits and kept local planning documents excluded. Codex verified the models build and types, all 222 focused document tests, scoped lint and formatting, changelog checks, and whitespace.

Add prepareDocument with explicit authority outcomes, server-owned identity and timestamp checks, conflict diagnostics, and independently revalidated previews. Preserve source paths and aliases, reject invalid trusted targets, and keep per-path changes independent for shared source objects. Document the #152 integration boundary and cover preparation with focused tests. Remove the research probe from tracking while retaining it locally.

I asked Codex to implement the agreed #151 preparation contract without changing GraphQL, permission queries, or persistence. I chose server-owned creation fields and explicit previews, and requested developer comments and a local PR draft. Codex generated the implementation, tests, consumer documentation, and changelog updates. Codex subagents verified the models build and types, all 231 focused tests, scoped lint and formatting, changelog checks, and whitespace.

On the changelog nitpick in the 2026-10-28 review (changes.d/javascript/document-validator.md, lines 7-30): length alone may be fine here. The entry is one 24-line paragraph, so the user-facing pieces (the two new APIs, the offline and authority boundaries, the supported-type limits) are hard to find.

Suggest splitting the fragment into a few - items or paragraphs by behavior area instead of compressing it into fewer sentences, and keeping the coverage matrix in packages/models/README.md (or an internals page) as the reference. The section, links, and attribution look right.

One separate issue in the same file: mise run check:changelog currently fails on fragment formatting (a blank line after the front matter). mise run fmt:changelog fixes it.

Currently, traversal in checkDocumentValue() has no depth bound and copies the full path at every level, so heap use grows quadratically with nesting: a valid 40,000-level Create.object chain of about 1 MB exhausts the Node.js heap, and nested extension arrays such as debugData: [[[…]]] take 1.1 s at 20,000 levels from only 40 KB. Checking path.length against a constant such as 64 at the start of checkDocument() and checkExtension(), and reporting the already-registered processing_limit_exceeded without descending further, would bound both cases, while the existing diagnostic cap still stops wide fan-out at that boundary. The trade-off is that valid documents nested beyond the limit would end as incomplete instead of being fully checked, which reverses the no-depth-limit decision in 70dc65d and requires changing the two depth-3000 tests. Whether to keep the current behavior or adopt the limit is the PR author's call, but documenting the resulting constraint, either the depth limit or the quadratic cost, in the README would help the consumers in #141 and #152.

I asked Codex to address the changelog review by separating the APIs, authority boundaries, and support limits into readable items, keeping the coverage reference in the package README. Codex revised the fragment and regenerated CHANGES.md; a subagent verified Sacho formatting, preview, and checks. I also ran Sacho sync, the changelog check, and the formatter.

Reject array and null identifiers through the shared id check. Report omitted seconds, fractions without seconds, and excessive fractional precision as unsupported representations while retaining invalid-calendar diagnostics. Update fixtures and documentation and verify supported timestamp precision through Fedify parsing.

I implemented the identifier restriction and asked Codex to implement timestamp compatibility checks without normalization. I directed the diagnostic wording toward specific representation limits. Codex updated the validator, fixtures, README, and regression tests; a subagent ran the models build, typecheck, formatting, and focused tests. Eight timestamp-focused tests passed; three broader document test expectations still reflect the previous array/null identifier policy. I ran mise run fmt.

Report unsupported embedded actor, attribution, and collection navigation values before Fedify can discard or reject them. Report Object-only properties on Link as inapplicable while retaining supported preview and language-map forms. Update fixtures, regression tests, and the documented support limits. Regenerate the changelog to remove a duplicate entry left by the rebase.

I asked Codex to address both review comments using support diagnostics for narrower Fedify ranges and applicability errors for Object-only Link fields. Codex implemented the checks, updated fixtures and documentation, and added regression tests. I questioned the preview and nameMap restrictions; inspection of the vocabulary and Fedify round-trip tests supported retaining them. Codex subagents verified the models build, typecheck, scoped lint and formatting, focused document tests, and Sacho synchronization and checks. The same three existing ID-policy test failures remain.

Reject empty inline context terms and mapping IRIs containing forbidden characters. Check language-tagged value shapes inside opaque extensions while retaining valid null forms and custom-field preservation. Update fixtures, tests, and the support documentation.

I asked Codex to address the review examples without interpreting custom-property semantics. Codex implemented the conditions and regression tests, and updated fixtures and the README. I selected the isSupportedContextUri name to describe the supported profile rather than claim complete IRI validation. Codex subagents verified Fedify behavior, the models build and typecheck, scoped lint and formatting, and seven targeted safety tests. Three existing ID-policy test failures remain in the broader document tests.

Explain that unimplemented known Object properties block successful validation, unlike unchecked custom properties. Record the deferred coverage beyond 0.2.0 and link the follow-up in #168.

I asked Codex to document the limitation requested in review and link the follow-up issue I opened. Codex drafted the README clarification and added the issue reference. I confirmed the release boundary against the review comment; Codex verified the issue wording and a subagent checked formatting and whitespace.

Offer omission previews for empty arrays on supported properties and revalidate previews. Preserve custom arrays and existing unsupported-property errors. Report server-owned conflicts at original list-entry paths and prefer the requested existing alias when proposing generated values. Update fixtures, tests, documentation, and the changelog.

I selected omission previews rather than rejection for supported empty arrays and asked Codex to fix preparation paths while retaining the strict identifier policy. Codex implemented both changes and their regression tests, and updated the fixtures, README, and changelog. I requested removal of a thin eligibility helper and a short comment; Codex reused the property classification. Codex subagents verified 250 focused document/preparation tests, then 27 focused tests after the refactor, plus the models build, typecheck, scoped lint and formatting, whitespace, and Sacho checks.

Check server-owned target paths, semantic fields, duplicate declarations, and trusted values before document errors or authority denials stop preparation. Distinguish missing parents from targets blocked by document errors, and document authority paths as diagnostic locations.

I asked Codex to make caller mistakes reliably detectable and draft the policy handoff for #152. Codex separated configuration checks from proposal generation, added descriptor-safe target checks and regression tests, and clarified the README. I retained document diagnostics when invalid types or contexts prevent resolution. Codex subagents verified all 255 focused document/preparation tests, the models build and typecheck, scoped formatting and lint, and whitespace. The policy handoff remains a local draft.

Build context tables when validation first needs them and cache only complete results. Keep profile mismatches from breaking module import and test initialization failure, retry, and caching. Remove four diagnostic reasons that were never emitted and document the complete public export list.

I asked Codex to defer bundled-context interpretation until validation and remove unused diagnostic reasons. Codex implemented lazy initialization, updated documentation, and added isolated-process regression coverage. I selected deferral rather than converting initialization failures into diagnostics. Codex subagents verified all 256 focused document/preparation tests, the models build and typecheck, scoped formatting and lint, and whitespace.

Keep all 100 findings when no further diagnostic occurs. On overflow, replace the final slot with the truncation marker and withhold previews. Add boundary coverage and clarify that the diagnostic cap limits output rather than processing work.

I agreed to fix the diagnostic-cap boundary while keeping a processing budget deferred. Codex updated the reporter and a subagent added 99/100/101 regression cases for warnings, vocabulary errors, and omission previews, and updated the README. Codex subagents verified all 258 focused document/preparation tests, the models build and typecheck, scoped formatting and lint, and whitespace.

Preserve null values without unsupported-property diagnostics while retaining support errors for non-null values. Cover nested documents and aliases, and document the absence policy.

I asked Codex to fix the null-property rejection and keep the depth policy unchanged. Codex implemented the fix, regression coverage, and README update; its subagent verified all 259 focused document/preparation tests, the models build, scoped lint, formatting, and whitespace checks.

id treats null as an error but an empty array as absence.

Reproduced against the built module:

{ "type": "Note", "id": null } // invalid_value_shape at ["id"]
{ "type": "Note", "id": [null] } // invalid_value_shape at ["id"]
{ "type": "Note", "id": [] }      // empty_property_list plus an omission change

Activity Streams 2.0 §2 treats null and an empty array as the same absence, and the README says “Null means absence, including null list entries” without an exception. The preparation table also says a null value receives a replace proposal, which cannot happen for id because the document is rejected first.

Fedify rejects all three forms, so rejecting null is consistent with the 0.2.0 boundary. The inconsistency is that id: [] gets normalized while id: null does not. Either route id: null and id: [null] through the same omission proposal, or document the id exception in the README table and the preparation table. The second is smaller, but it should be explicit because #140, #141, and #152 will each decide how to encode an absent identifier.

An empty supported array that is also a server-owned field produces two contradictory changes.

prepareDocument(
  { "@context": c, type: "Note", id: [], content: "x" },
  {
    authority: [{ allowed: true, path: [] }],
    serverOwnedFields: [{ path: ["id"], value: "https://e/id" }],
  },
);

changes contains:

remove  ["id"] omit_empty_property_list
replace ["id"] assign_server_owned_field

The preview is correct because the replace is applied last, but the change list says both “remove this property” and “set this property”, and empty_property_list says “the preview omits this property” even though the preview contains the server value. The same happens with published: [], actor: [], and other supported arrays combined with an owned field.

Consumers in #140 and #141 will display these changes, and #152 may apply them in order or compare them. Suggest suppressing the omission change when a server-owned field targets the same path, so the result is a single replace. The warning message would then describe the replacement rather than an omission.

Opaque extensions can still break whole-document parsing through @id and @type.

The new @value and @language checks close the cases from the earlier review, but these still pass with only extension_property_unchecked:

{
  "@context": ["https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams", { "x": "https://e.example/x" }],
  "type": "Note",
  "x": { "@id": 5 }
}
{
  "@context": ["https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams", { "x": "https://e.example/x" }],
  "type": "Note",
  "x": { "@type": 5 }
}

fromJsonLd() rejects both documents with @id value must be a string and @type value must be a string, an array of strings, ..., so the failure is not confined to the custom field. The comment above checkExtension() says an unchecked extension cannot break whole-document parsing, which is not true yet.

Suggest checking @id and @type in the same place, requiring a string or an array of strings. @value: 1 and @list are accepted by Fedify, so those need no change.

Caller path preflight is skipped when the document root is not an object.

With a valid document, a missing parent path throws TypeError, and the new preflight correctly does the same even when the document has a vocabulary error. With a scalar root, the same configuration returns invalid_document_root instead:

prepareDocument(5, {
  authority: [{ allowed: true, path: [] }],
  serverOwnedFields: [{ path: ["missing", "id"], value: "https://e/x" }],
});

isMissingPreparationParent() returns index > 0 when it meets a non-object at the current segment, so a non-object root at index 0 is treated as a path that might exist. A path cannot exist below a scalar, so this could return true for any non-empty parent path.

This is an edge case, but it leaves the “caller configuration errors throw deterministically” guarantee dependent on the root shape, which is what the earlier review asked to remove. Suggest treating a non-object root with a non-empty parent path as missing.

The Link row is stale now that Object-only fields report property_not_applicable.

The row says Object-only content and location are unsupported, but objectOnlyProperties covers the whole set (attributedTo, tag, inReplyTo, url, attachment, replies, icon, image, context, source, duration, generator, addressing, and timestamps) and document.ts reports property_not_applicable for them on Link and Mention. The paragraphs below the table already describe this, so the row contradicts them.

Suggest Object-only fields, such as content and location, receive property_not_applicable. and keep preview out of that description, since the vocabulary supports preview on Link.

This is valid and matches the comment at line 1466.

When published: [] or id: [] is also a server-owned field, changes contains remove and replace for the same path, and the empty_property_list message says the preview omits a property that the preview actually replaces. The preview is correct only because createPreview() applies changes in order.

Fix it once in proposeServerField() by dropping an omit_empty_property_list change for the same path before adding the replacement, so the result is a single replace, and add preparation tests for published: [] and id: [] that assert exactly one change.
