The npm package explains itself to someone who has never seen tfg - #221
The npm package (npm/testing-files-generator, not published yet) is now documented for someone who has never seen tfg, and its messages for the usual first mistakes say what went wrong in the words the test was written in.
Documentation
README of the package is a guide, in the order a newcomer needs it: what tfg is and what the package does with it, install, a first Playwright test in five commented steps, npx playwright test --list to see the tests before running them (it writes none of the set's files), the words a set uses, how check compares what a system did, files with no right answer and the way to decide them (npx tfg preset eject ... -o, edit expected and purpose, fileSet({ recipe })), options and sizes in 1024s, where sets are kept and checked, CI, node:test and Vitest, a reference of every member, and a table of the messages a user meets with what to do about each.
One sentence was not true and is gone: no preset, and no recipe boundary:, expects an accepted file with size_limit. A reason is written only beside a refusal.
sanitize is said plainly to have no preset today.
index.d.ts describes every field and method, so an editor shows what each one is.
Examples that talk to a server fail on an answer of 500 or more rather than count it as a refusal, and the page examples wait for an answer the app gives on purpose. The example's own API test does the same. Against a server that answers 500 to everything, the node:test example as first written had ten green tests, as many as against the real demo.
The README says what happens when workers ask for a set at the same moment (each writes a copy and the first one finished is kept), that planning needs a cache directory it can write to, that what is refused is a manifest of another major version, and that import.meta.dirname takes the place of __dirname in an ES module.
README of the example gives a way in without Go: the archive from the latest release and TFG_BINARY. It also says what to read, in order.
Every example in the README was run before it was written down: the first spec against the example's page, node:test and Vitest against its server, the eject route through the package, the example's own check against the released 0.5.0 binary, and the HTTP examples against a server that answers 500 to everything.

tfg generate --preset=upload-validaton --out=...\.tmp-218588-ab06fbd3 --dry-run --json ended with code 2.
fileSet({ preset: 'upload-validaton' }) could not be planned - tfg ended with code 2. followed by what tfg said
flag provided but not defined: -limt and about forty lines of help with single-dash flags
... gives the option limt, and tfg generate has no flag of that name. Its flags are allow, boundary, bulk, ... and the command that describes them
fileSet({}), or options that add no flag such as { clean: false }, ran tfg and printed its advice about --format and --preset
fileSet was not told which files to write. before tfg runs
a system with no package was told to run tfg from its container image
it is told to run the tests in a Linux container, where npm installs the package for Linux
TfgError takes a message of its own. Its status and stderr are unchanged, so everything tfg said is still on the error.
Tests
Three new node --test cases with the real binary (a refused plan, an unknown option, an empty spec) and one changed. The empty-spec test also covers options that add no flag. Five manual mutants of the new code were each caught by them.
Expanded setup and usage guidance for generating test files, including upload scenarios, presets, filtering, caching, CI, troubleshooting, and API reference.
Clarified Playwright requirements and instructions for obtaining or building the required command-line tool.
Added explanations of public types, options, and test-file behavior.
Bug Fixes
Calls that specify no files to generate now fail before creating cache entries.
Planning errors now provide more actionable details, including the original options and relevant diagnostics.
Updated unsupported-platform guidance to recommend running tests in a Linux container.
The package README is a guide: what tfg is, how to install it, a first
Playwright test in five steps, the words a set uses, how check compares
what a system did, what to do with files that have no right answer
(eject the preset, decide, use the recipe), options, where sets are
kept, CI, node:test and Vitest, a reference and a table of messages.
Every example was run against the example app. One sentence was not
true and is gone: no preset expects an accepted file with size_limit.
index.d.ts describes every field and method, so an editor shows it.
A plan tfg refuses is told from the call the test wrote, not from the
command with a scratch directory and flags nobody wrote. An option tfg
does not know is one sentence that lists the options it takes, rather
than the whole help of tfg generate. A call that names nothing to write
is refused before tfg runs. A system with no package of tfg is told to
run the tests in a Linux container.
The example README gives a way in without Go: the release binary and
TFG_BINARY.

Walkthrough
The npm package now rejects empty file-set specifications and adds call-aware diagnostics for tfg planning errors. TfgError formatting uses exported helpers. Package and Playwright example documentation now covers setup, usage, options, caching, errors, and platform fallback.
Changes: File-set package
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate file-set specs and report planning errors npm/testing-files-generator/lib/fileset.js, npm/testing-files-generator/lib/run.js, npm/testing-files-generator/test/fileset.test.js
fileSet rejects calls without a preset, recipe, or nonempty options. Planning errors include the original call and tfg diagnostics; unknown-option errors also list accepted options and relevant help. Tests cover these cases and verify that empty calls do not create cache entries.
Document package API and setup npm/testing-files-generator/README.md, npm/testing-files-generator/index.d.ts, npm/testing-files-generator/lib/binary.js, npm/testing-files-generator/test/binary.test.js, examples/playwright/README.md
The package documentation and declaration comments explain existing APIs and usage. Platform guidance now directs unsupported systems to use a Linux container. The Playwright example documents Node 22+, tfg setup, test execution, and related reading.
The change documents the package and improves error messages. A few edge cases and documentation statements are slightly inaccurate. None of them blocks use of the package. Fix them before or soon after merge.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "The npm package explains itself to someone who has never seen tfg" is a plain-language description of the main change. The PR expands the npm package README and index.d.ts documentation for new users, which matches the title. It is not vague, but it describes the outcome in marketing-style prose rather than naming the specific documentation and error-message changes, so it only partially meets the requirement to say what changes for the code or user.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR changes runtime behavior in binary.js, fileset.js, and run.js, and it adds or updates tests for those paths. fileset.test.js covers empty specs, refused plans, unknown options, preserved stderr, status codes, and package-added flags. binary.test.js updates the changed platform guidance assertion. Existing run.test.js covers TfgError status, signal, and stderr behavior. No tests were deleted, skipped, or weakened; the only changed assertion updates the expected Intel Mac message documented in the PR.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The pull-request diff adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. It contains no credentials, private URLs, personal emails, internal IPs, user-specific absolute paths, or debug output. The URLs point to the public GitHub repository, and localhost plus /path/to examples are generic documentation examples.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. The code changes add small validation, bounded stderr parsing, and error-message formatting. The existing synchronous planning subprocess in fileSet was not newly added, and the documentation, type comments, and tests do not add runtime processing.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No changed implementation introduces a desktop robustness issue in the listed categories. The code changes only add input validation, error-message formatting, spec descriptions, and an updated unsupported-platform message. Existing file generation remains temporary-directory based with rename settlement, and the PR adds no asset lookup, locale-sensitive parsing, network API, admin request, window/background lifecycle, destructive UI action, or new long-running execution path.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file-parsing behavior is introduced. The diff adds input validation, diagnostic formatting with util.inspect, and TfgError message handling. The existing fs.readFileSync recipe read and JSON.parse calls for tfg-generated manifests remain unchanged in behavior. No XML, YAML, CSV, XLSX, archive, formula, external-entity, arbitrary-deserialization, or new path-traversal code is added.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The changed code only plans and writes test-file caches, formats errors, resolves binaries, and invokes the tfg child process. The diff adds no network filter or proxy rules, firewall changes, system-time changes, process hooking/injection, Windows service, registry, or driver changes. The reversibility condition is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds user-facing documentation and clearer errors, but no explicit clarity failure is introduced. The changed errors identify the cause and an action: empty fileSet calls name the missing inputs and show a preset example; unknown options name the bad option, list valid options, and point to help; refused plans include the original call, exit status, and tfg diagnostics; missing binaries offer a Linux container or TFG_BINARY. The README defines the related terms (set, preset, recipe, outcome, and reason) and uses them consistently. No changed UI control or icon-only button requires a tooltip.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. The changed code only adds validation, error formatting, and comments. Existing child-process paths still close runToFile descriptors in finally; run() receives the child's close event and retains only a bounded 64 KiB stderr buffer. The retry timer in _settle() is finite and resolves before the next attempt. The existing sources map and persistent cache behavior are unchanged by this PR.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The pull request stays within the stated documentation and error-message scope. It updates the package and example READMEs for the changed requirements, binary guidance, API usage, and new diagnostics. index.d.ts adds comments without changing public types or method signatures; index.js keeps the same public exports. The new fileSet({}) validation improves invalid-input handling and is documented. No duplicate architecture layer, unrelated refactor, or undocumented backward-incompatible data/API change is evident.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Provide an ESM-compatible recipe path.
In an ES module, __dirname is not defined, so this example fails while the test loads. Provide an ESM alternative using fileURLToPath(new URL('./uploads.yaml', import.meta.url)). Update the same guidance in index.d.ts and later in this README. (nodejs.org)

Reject options that produce no flags.
{ options: { clean: false } } and { options: { set: [] } } pass this check, but argsOf removes both options. The call then starts tfg, or reports a missing binary, instead of rejecting the empty spec before planning.
Check the normalized arguments before resolving the binary. Add both cases to the empty-spec test.

Do not present every generate flag as an option the selected preset accepts.
refusedPlan lists every generate flag that the help output names, minus the reserved names. It does not check the selected preset. A preset can refuse a single-target flag that its Reads does not include, so a user who follows this list can hit a second refusal.

Describe concurrent writes accurately.
Separate workers can each generate a temporary copy before one wins the rename. Source._write and Source._settle in lib/fileset.js then discard the other copies. Large sets can therefore require several times the stated disk space. Document that each process may write a copy. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clarify that planning writes temporary files.
fileSet creates the cache directory and writes temporary plan and error files before removing them. A read-only cache can therefore make --list fail. Say that planning writes no generated test files, but requires a writable cache. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not classify server errors as expected rejections.
response.ok is false for both the server's expected rejection statuses and HTTP 500. The bundled server returns 500 when upload parsing or processing fails, so these examples can pass while the server reports an error. To use a tfg installed another way, set `TFG_BINARY` to its path, or pass `binary` to `fileSet`. On a system with no binary of its own, such as an Intel Mac, the container image `ghcr.io/donislawdev/tfg` runs the same program.

Update the README’s version guidance and troubleshooting entry to distinguish
the manifest major version checked by readable from the tfg program’s version:
state that a different program version may be accepted if it writes a compatible
version 1 manifest, and do not claim the binary’s major version is refused.

…s what the code does
- The HTTP examples in the README, and the API test of the Playwright example,
fail on an answer of 500 or more instead of counting it as a refusal. The
page examples wait for an answer the app gives on purpose, so an error page
fails rather than passing as a refusal.
- The README says that workers asking for a set at the same moment each write
a copy and the first one finished is kept, that planning needs a cache
directory it can write to, that what is refused is a manifest of another
major version, and that import.meta.dirname takes the place of __dirname in
an ES module. index.d.ts and the message for a missing recipe say the same.
- An option tfg does not know lists the flags of tfg generate without claiming
that the call takes every one of them.
- Options that add no flag, such as clean: false or set: [], are refused as an
empty spec before tfg runs.

Three new
node --testcases with the real binary (a refused plan, an unknown option, an empty spec) and one changed. The empty-spec test also covers options that add no flag. Five manual mutants of the new code were each caught by them.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
