verify and cleanup read the manifest of a run of any size - #218
tfg verify and tfg cleanup read the manifest of a run of any size. They refused a manifest larger than 16 MB (about 20 000 files), so the files of a larger run were files tfg cleanup could never remove. The manifest is now read a value at a time: one value (one file's entry, the run, the tool) may take at most 16 MB, and the document has no limit.
--memory on verify and cleanup, the same setting generate takes. What the commands hold of a manifest is checked against it, and a manifest listing more files than it allows is refused before any file is looked at (exit 5), with the number of files and how much they would take. Under the program's own process the setting is also the runtime's soft memory limit, as for generate.
Ctrl+C while the manifest is read stops at once: exit 130, and the command says it checked or removed nothing.
A manifest that names a key twice, or has anything after it but white space, is refused (exit 5). This tool never writes either. A manifest with two lists of files used to be acted on by the second.
The records of other runs in the same directory are read the same way, so the files of a large neighbour are reported as another-run rather than extra.
The warning that a manifest would be too large to read back is gone from both surfaces, and new manifests no longer carry summary.too_large_to_read_back. The field was optional and manifest_version does not move, so this is not a breaking change.
generate --json no longer holds a second copy of the manifest in memory to print it.
Measured
In a Docker container of 1 GB without swap, the program from this branch, a manifest of 600 000 files (--memory auto, heap read from GODEBUG=gctrace=1):
command
result
time
largest heap
most alive
verify
exit 0, 600000 files checked
10 s
413 MB
206 MB
cleanup --yes
exit 0, every file removed
24 s
472 MB
282 MB
Before this change both ended with exit 5 without reading. The cost a claimed file is counted at against --memory comes from these numbers.
How
internal/manifest/read.go: one reader under a json.Decoder, with a reader beneath it whose limit is moved before every question to the decoder. Keys other than files are handed to encoding/json one at a time, so field types and key matching are what reading the whole document gave. Load (the whole document, kept at 16 MB) and ReadClaims/EachClaim are this reader, so they refuse the same documents in the same words.
A document with two faults is refused for the first in a fixed order: the document itself, then the version, the major, the first entry that leaves the directory, the instructions, and last the memory setting.
audit.Verify and audit.Inspect take manifest.Claims (path, size and hash of each claimed file) instead of the whole manifest.
Guards
manifestread_test.go was written against the old reader before the change: key order and case, anything after the document, white space after it, a key named twice, two faults, nearly empty documents, and a neighbour longer than 16 MB. Six were green on the old reader, and the two that describe changed behaviour were red.
manifestreadlimits_test.go: Load keeps its ceiling on the whole document while ReadClaims reads the same document, both doors give the same refusals and the same claims, Ctrl+C during reading, and the memory setting.
One more each in concurrentruns_test.go (one value past the ceiling against a long document), manifestreach_test.go (a real manifest past the old ceiling is verified and cleaned up) and manifeststream_test.go (--json sends the manifest a part at a time, and the bytes are the saved file's).
Mutation entries: new ones for each of these, and the entries of moved code moved with it.
A manifest is read one value at a time under a ceiling of 16 MiB on one
value instead of on the whole document, so the manifest of a run of any
size can be verified and cleaned up. What verify and cleanup hold of it
is checked against the new --memory setting on both commands.
A key named twice and anything after the document are refused, and
Ctrl+C while the manifest is read stops the reading.

… warning goes
With no ceiling on the length of the manifest left, nothing is too large to
read back: summary.too_large_to_read_back is no longer written, and the
warning about it is gone from the command line and the window. The forecast
the command line made only for that warning goes with it.
generate --json writes the manifest out a part at a time instead of holding a
second copy of it in memory.
The cost a claimed file is counted at against --memory is measured: verify and
cleanup --yes read the manifest of 600 000 files in a container of 1 GB.

Walkthrough
Manifest reading now supports incremental claims for verification and cleanup, with per-value size limits and validation for duplicate keys and trailing content. The change removes read-back size warnings and streams generate --json output.
Changes: Manifest lifecycle
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Incremental decoding and claims internal/manifest/*, internal/gui/text/locale/said/*, internal/guard/manifestread*, internal/guard/manifestreadlimits_test.go, internal/guard/mutation/entries.py, CHANGELOG.md
Manifest decoding now processes file entries incrementally. Each value has a 16 MiB limit, while ReadClaims has no whole-document limit. The reader rejects duplicate recognized keys and non-whitespace trailing content. Tests and localized messages cover these cases.
Claim-based verification and cleanup internal/cli/claims.go, internal/cli/{cleanup,errors,memoryflag,verify}.go, internal/audit/*, internal/guard/*
verify and cleanup read claims with the configured memory limit and pass them to audit operations. Neighboring manifests are read incrementally. Tests cover cancellation, memory refusals, and verification and cleanup of manifests beyond the former document ceiling.
The read-back size status and related CLI and GUI warnings are removed. Manifest byte-size measurement remains. The updated test verifies and cleans up a manifest larger than the former ceiling.
generate --json writes the encoded manifest to the output writer without first storing a second encoded copy. The output path distinguishes encoding errors from writer errors.
The change lets verify and cleanup read very large manifests. Before merging, fix three things: partial JSON can reach stdout from generate --json when output fails part-way, a neighbouring manifest that repeats a path can use excessive memory during verify, and the changelog entry is too long and will fail the changelog test.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "verify and cleanup read the manifest of a run of any size" matches the main change. The PR makes tfg verify and tfg cleanup read manifests incrementally, so the size limit applies per value rather than to the whole document. The title is specific and names both commands and the behavior change. It is 57 characters, within the ~140 character guidance. It does not name the per-value limit or the new --memory flag, but it does not need to.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds tests for the changed runtime behavior. The diff adds manifest-reader tests for key order, case, trailing content, duplicate keys, fault precedence, large neighboring records, value limits, cancellation, memory limits, and Load/ReadClaims consistency. It adds end-to-end tests for verifying and cleaning manifests past the old limit and for streamed generate --json output. Existing warning tests were removed only because the PR description explicitly states that the warning and summary.too_large_to_read_back field are removed.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The reviewed diff adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Added-line scans found no credentials, token-shaped secrets, private URLs, personal email addresses, internal IPs/hostnames, or hardcoded local absolute paths. The new fmt.Fprintf/Fprintln calls are normal CLI error and status output; no added debug print, debugger, breakpoint, or equivalent code is present.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The PR touches GUI files only to remove the obsolete manifest-size warning and add localized manifest messages. The changed window code removes warning calls and a helper; it adds no control styling, literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, padding, corner radii, or duplicated controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance defect is introduced. Manifest reads are linear over JSON values, with per-value limits and buffered I/O. Neighbour matching uses a map, and file checks use bounded parallel workers with reusable buffers. generate --json now streams output instead of building a second manifest copy. The GUI changes only remove warning text; they do not add UI-thread I/O or computation.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No explicit desktop-robustness failure is introduced. cleanup still deletes only with --yes (internal/cli/cleanup.go:21,103-109). New large-manifest reads accept context cancellation and stop before verification or deletion when interrupted (internal/cli/claims.go:25-37, internal/manifest/read.go:314-329). Manifest persistence continues through the existing temporary-file and publish path (internal/core/writenew.go:8-38); generate --json writes only to the supplied output stream. The diff adds no asset loading, culture-sensitive number/date handling, network calls, admin requests, or background work.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR changes manifest reading, verification, cleanup planning, memory limits, and streamed output. The diff contains no changes to network filters, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooking/injection, Windows services, registry, or drivers. File removal in existing cleanup behavior and Go runtime memory-limit handling are outside the stated failure conditions.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak was introduced. manifest.EachClaim opens each manifest and defers f.Close(), so decode, cancellation, and error paths close the file. The new claim slices and neighbour maps are operation-scoped. sendManifest retains only one write error and owns no closable resource. The diff adds no timers, subscriptions, goroutines, processes, or persistent caches.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
The new unbounded manifest reader can exhaust resources on huge input. manifest.ReadClaims calls EachClaim with most == 0 when --memory off; its callback appends every claimed file to claims.Files, so a valid huge manifest, or malformed input after many entries, can grow memory until the process is killed. audit.claimsAmong also changed neighbor parsing from capped manifest.Load to uncapped manifest.EachClaim; findNeighbours opens every unclaimed .json candidate and reads it to the end. The PR therefore removes the former 16 MiB protection for arbitrary neighboring JSON files and can spend unbounded time reading them. The path checks in entryEscapes and claimedPaths, and standard encoding/json, do not show code execution or path traversal.
Resolution
Add a hard resource boundary independent of --memory off. Replace the in-memory accumulation in manifest.ReadClaims with a bounded claim count/byte policy or a disk-backed claim spool. Add a bounded EachClaim variant that opens with core.OpenRegular and wraps the input in io.LimitReader; use it in audit.claimsAmong so unrelated or malformed .json files cannot cause unbounded reads. Return a typed refusal when the limit is reached.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
New manifest-read errors report the fault but give no corrective action. In internal/gui/text/locale/said/en.json:2259-2292 and 2324-2327, FilesIsNotAList, ItEndsPartWay, ItHoldsNoDocument, ItIsNotAnObject, and SomethingFollowsIt only describe malformed input. internal/manifest/read.go:167-193,209,309 routes these texts to user-facing verify/cleanup refusals. The corresponding Polish texts have the same omission. Other new errors, such as the memory-limit and duplicate-key messages, already provide an action.
Resolution
Add an action to each affected English and Polish message. For example: files is a JSON {{.Kind}} rather than a list. Use the manifest the run actually wrote.; it ends part way through the document, so it was cut short. Use the complete manifest the run wrote.; it holds no JSON document at all. Use the manifest the run actually wrote.; it is a JSON {{.Kind}} rather than an object, so it is not a manifest this tool wrote. Use the manifest the run actually wrote.; and something follows the end of the document. Remove the trailing content, or use the manifest the run actually wrote. Translate the added action text consistently in internal/gui/text/locale/said/pl.json.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The new --memory argument is user-facing, but the reference documentation is stale. The PR adds checkingMemoryFlag to both verify and cleanup in internal/cli/verify.go:25-26 and internal/cli/cleanup.go:26-27. README.md is unchanged; its command forms at lines 363 and 373 omit --memory, and its memory description at line 348 says the flag also applies only to validate and preset show. The changelog documents the feature, but it does not replace the stale command reference. The internal API changes are scoped to internal packages, and old manifests remain readable because unknown optional fields are ignored, so no separate public compatibility failure is established.
Resolution
Update README.md. Add --memory <m> to the verify and cleanup command forms. Document auto, size values, and off, plus the refusal before file access when the manifest exceeds the checking limit. Update the shared memory flag description so it names verify and cleanup. Clarify that one manifest value is limited to 16 MiB while the document has no overall limit.

Review comments at @internal/audit/neighbours.go:

Review comments at @internal/cli/record.go:
- Line 143: Preserve the no-stdout-on-failure contract at the
`res.Manifest.Encode(sent)` output path. Stage the complete JSON and use an
output mechanism that guarantees failed runs cannot leave partial stdout;
establish that guarantee for writer errors before adopting it. If stdout cannot
be committed transactionally, do not change to streaming without an explicitly
approved and documented contract change.
Review comments at @internal/guard/manifeststream_test.go:
- Line 116: The existing write-size check in
TestGenerateSendsItsManifestAPartAtATime does not detect buffering the full
manifest before chunked writes. Add a mutation entry in entries.py that makes
sendManifest buffer its output and then write fixed-size chunks, and extend the
test with a memory-usage bound well below the manifest size so this mutant
fails.
Review comments at @internal/manifest/read.go:
- Line 128: Add per-value boundary tests around the limit calculation using the
decoder offset in the reader, covering a value comfortably below the ceiling,
the exact effective boundary, and one byte over if that is the intended
rejection contract. Add mutation entries that distinguish the expected boundary
comparison so changing `>` to `>=` is detected; preserve the existing
long-manifest coverage.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Every change in behaviour comes with a test that fails without it.** A green
suite is not evidence on its own. The question to answer in the pull request
is "which test would go red if this change were undone". Each test in
`internal/guard` is also broken on purpose by an entry in
`internal/guard/mutation/entries.py`, and the `mutation` check on a pull
request runs the entries the change reaches. A new test needs an entry there,
or a line in `internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go` saying why it has none.

## What this tool does, and what that means for scope
**It never deletes anything it was not told about.** `tfg cleanup` removes exactly
the files a manifest lists and nothing else.

Learning: Safe file parsing: Warn if the PR reads, imports or exports files (XML, XAML, CSV, XLSX, JSON, YAML,
translations, themes, settings, archives) in a way that could execute code or formulas,
resolve external entities, deserialize arbitrary types, write unescaped formula-like
values to CSV/XLSX, follow paths outside the intended folder, or crash/hang on malformed
or huge input. Name the exact API and the safe replacement.

Tests for changed behavior: Warn if the PR changes or adds non-UI runtime behavior (not only docs, CI, config, assets,
pure UI layout or refactor without behavior change) and does not add or update tests
covering that behavior. Also warn if existing tests were deleted, skipped or had
assertions weakened without an explicit justification in the PR description.

The command line is **English only** and stays that way, translations included.
It goes into scripts and CI logs that other people read, and a message that
changes language with the machine it ran on is a message nobody can search for.

The mutant can compile with the existing import.
internal/cli/generate.go already imports bytes, so this mutation does not require a new package import.

Preserve the failed-run stdout contract.
If a writer accepts the first chunk and rejects a later one, this returns exit 5 after emitting partial JSON. The README promises no stdout on a failed run. (raw.githubusercontent.com) Preserve that contract with a transactional output mechanism, or explicitly agree and document a contract change before streaming.
As per path instructions: “CLI is a CI/CD interface” and stdout is a contract.

Review comment at @internal/cli/record.go at line 143:
Preserve the no-stdout-on-failure contract at the `res.Manifest.Encode(sent)`
output path. Stage the complete JSON and use an output mechanism that guarantees
failed runs cannot leave partial stdout; establish that guarantee for writer
errors before adopting it. If stdout cannot be committed transactionally, do not
change to streaming without an explicitly approved and documented contract
change.

…ld from both sides
- verify keeps each file another run's record claims once, however many
times the record lists it, so what it holds grows with the directory
rather than with the record. A guard reads two records of 50 000 entries
and compares what each allocated.
- One value a kilobyte under the 16 MB ceiling is read, so the ceiling
cannot drop below the one the refusal names without a guard noticing.
- The guard on generate --json asks that the first piece of the manifest
reaches standard output from inside Encode. A document encoded whole and
then sent in small pieces gave the same piece sizes and passed.
- The changelog entry for reading a manifest of any size is cut under the
hundred words, with --memory on verify and cleanup under Added and the
read-back warning under Removed.
- The reader's internal signal for a value past the ceiling is a Defect, the
one-key document is built by append alone, and the race weights no longer
name the window guard this branch removed.

The manifest is now read a value at a time: one value (one file's entry, the run, the tool) may take at most 16 MB, and the document has no limit.--memoryonverifyandcleanup, the same settinggeneratetakes. What the commands hold of a manifest is checked against it, and a manifest listing more files than it allows is refused before any file is looked at (exit 5), with the number of files and how much they would take. Under the program's own process the setting is also the runtime's soft memory limit, as forgenerate.another-runrather thanextra.summary.too_large_to_read_back.
