Cancel and closing the window no longer freeze it, and the window lets go of fields it no longer shows - #217
Three defects of the window, each with guards that are red without its fix.
Cancel and closing the window no longer freeze it
Cancel, Escape and closing the window all cancelled the work and then waited for the worker on the interface thread. The engine asks its context between writes, so on a disk that answers the wait was milliseconds. On one that holds on to a write (a network share, a disk that went to sleep) the window stopped drawing for as long as the write took, and Windows offers to end a window that has not drawn for five seconds, which ends the process in the middle of a file.
Cancel asks the work to stop and returns. It switches itself off and the line says "Stopping - the step in progress is finished first, so nothing is left half written." until the worker's last word ("Stopped after ...") replaces it.
Closing the window during work writes the folder down, shows a Closing notice in place of the screens, stops answering the keyboard, waits for every screen on a goroutine of its own and closes from the window's queue. A second press of the close button does nothing. With nothing running it closes at once, as before. There is no way to close without waiting: that would leave half a file and no manifest.
internal/gui/window/work.go is what a screen keeps of its work, in place of the runner's stop and settled and the Tools tab's toolJob. Cancel and the worker's news change the screen under one mutex. In the program both are on the interface thread and it is never contended. Under the toolkit's test driver fyne.Do runs on the worker, and without the lock the four guards that press Cancel during a run were 12 of 12 red under -race.
work.go and closing.go are declared in the concurrency guard and added to the race job's watched list, so this pull request changes .github/workflows/ci.yml.
On the Tools tab Escape now presses Cancel only while it is shown, as on the other screens, and the tab has the hold the guards use.
A change of damage leaves no fields behind
The generate screen kept the parameter fields of every damage chosen before in its registry. They start at a mark set where the format's fields end now. A guard compares the registry with the screen both ways.
A list cut short lets go of what it cut
Fields.KeepFirst clears the tail it cuts, and the recipe screen removes batches and contents with slices.Delete. The list of batches moved to recipelist.go to keep recipe.go under the file ceiling.
Checks
New guards: TestCancelAnswersAtOnceAndSaysWhatItWaitsFor, TestCancelOnTheToolsTabAnswersAtOnce, TestClosingDuringARunKeepsTheWindowDrawingUntilTheRunHasStopped, TestNoKeyStartsWorkWhileTheWindowWaitsToClose, TestChoosingADamageAgainLeavesNoFieldBehind, TestAFieldTakenOffTheRegistryIsLetGo, TestNothingIsDeletedFromASliceByGluingItsHalves.
Guards that pressed Cancel or closed the window and read the result straight after now wait for the work first. Closing in the middle of a run also checks that the manifest says the run was stopped.
Seventeen new mutation entries and sixteen repointed to code that moved, each caught by its guard when tried by hand.
…d what is cut off a list is let go
Choosing a damage added its parameters to the generate screen's registry of
fields and never took the previous ones away, so every choice left a field
behind under nothing on the screen. The parameters now start at a mark set
where the format's fields are finished, and a change of damage cuts back to it.
KeepFirst clears what it cuts off, and the recipe screen removes batches and
contents with slices.Delete, so a cut list no longer keeps the cut pointers
alive in its array. The list of batches moved into recipelist.go, because the
import took recipe.go past its ceiling.
Three guards: the registry against the screen in both directions after
twenty choices of damage and twenty changes of format, weak pointers on what
KeepFirst cuts off, and no append of a slice's own two halves anywhere in
internal/ or cmd/. Six mutation entries, eight repointed.

…s for it off the window's thread
Cancel, Escape and closing the window all cancelled the work and then waited
for the worker on the interface thread. The engine asks its context between
writes, so on a disk that holds on to a write the window stopped drawing for
as long as the write took, and Windows offers to end a window that has not
drawn for five seconds - which ends the process in the middle of a file.
Cancel now asks the work to stop, switches itself off and says it is
stopping until the worker's last word replaces the line. Closing the window
during work writes the folder down, shows a Closing notice in place of the
screens, points the keyboard at that notice so no key starts work, waits for
every screen on a goroutine of its own and closes from the window's queue. A
second press of the close button does nothing. A window with nothing running
closes at once, as before. There is no way to close without waiting.
work.go is what a screen keeps of its work, in place of the runner's stop and
settled and the Tools tab's toolJob: cancel, done, and a mutex under which
Cancel and the worker's news change the screen. In the program both are on
the interface thread and the lock is never contended. Under the toolkit's
test driver fyne.Do runs on the worker, and without the lock the four guards
that press Cancel during a run were 12 of 12 red under -race. work.go and
closing.go are declared in the concurrency guard and in the race job's
watched list.
On the Tools tab Escape presses Cancel only while it is shown, as on the
other screens, and the hold the guards use moved into the busy state so the
tab has it too. Four new guards, four that now wait for the work after
pressing, eleven new mutation entries and eight repointed.

Walkthrough
Run cancellation now returns without waiting for work to stop. When the window closes during active work, it shows a closing notice and closes after the work settles. The PR also clears stale GUI field registrations and relocates recipe batch helpers.
Changes: Run cancellation and window closing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared work lifecycle and cancellation internal/gui/window/work.go, internal/gui/window/run.go, internal/gui/window/runbusy.go, internal/gui/window/tools.go, internal/guard/mutation/entries.py, internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go
Generation and Tools use a shared work handle for cancellation, progress, and completion. Cancel requests stopping without waiting and displays stopping status.
The closing controller shows a notice while active work stops, then closes the window. Tests cover asynchronous Cancel and close behavior, and CI watches closing.go for race-job triggering.
GUI field registry cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Field registration and damage changes internal/gui/parts/fields.go, internal/gui/window/generate.go, internal/guard/damagewindow_test.go, internal/guard/letgo_test.go
Field truncation clears discarded controls, and damage-field rebuilding removes registrations from the previous selection. Tests check registered controls and weak-pointer reachability.
Recipe batch helpers
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Batch and content management internal/gui/window/recipe.go, internal/gui/window/recipelist.go, internal/guard/mutation/entries.py, internal/guard/codeshape_test.go
Batch and content helpers move from recipe.go to recipelist.go. The mutation probes and file-size ratchet reference the new location.

The close test has a narrow timing risk that could cause an intermittent test failure. It does not establish a defect in window closing and need not block merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title clearly describes the two main user-visible changes: non-blocking cancellation and window closing, plus cleanup of fields that are no longer shown. It is specific and within the approximately 140-character limit.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds tests for each changed runtime area. stopping_test.go covers non-blocking Cancel on Generate and Tools, asynchronous close, single-close behavior, closing status, remembered output directory, manifest creation, and keyboard suppression. damagewindow_test.go covers repeated damage and format changes without stale registered fields. letgo_test.go covers field/control collection and rejects unsafe slice deletion across internal and cmd. Existing recipe tests still cover batch add, duplicate, and removal behavior. Existing tests were not deleted: the base has 1275 test functions and the head has 1282, with seven new tests. Updated cancellation and closing tests now join the asynchronous work before checking outputs; assertions were not weakened.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
No failure condition is introduced. The changed-file inventory contains no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Added-line scans found no debug output or breakpoint calls, credentials or tokens, URLs/emails, local absolute paths, IPs, or machine/user identifiers.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes Fyne UI behavior but adds no hardcoded styling. The new closing notice uses shared parts.Screen and parts.Titled helpers in internal/gui/window/closing.go:104. The Tools Cancel change keeps the shared parts.NewButton(parts.Secondary, ...) style and only changes its callback. Other GUI changes update lifecycle, field cleanup, and list data; they do not set colors, fonts, spacing, sizes, or corner radii, and do not add copied control definitions.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem was introduced. The changed run and preview paths keep planning, file work, disk-space checks, and manifest writes on worker goroutines. Window closing waits for screens on a separate goroutine, so the UI thread does not block on work. The collection changes are linear cleanup or single-item insertion/deletion; no new O(n²) processing, polling, or large non-virtualized collection was added.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No explicit Desktop robustness failure is introduced. work provides context cancellation and completion tracking; generation and Tools report progress where applicable, keep Cancel available, and use busy.occupied to prevent a second run. closing.leave shows a closing notice, stops every screen on a separate goroutine, waits for each Stop() to finish, and queues Host.Close() only afterward, so user work is not left running after the window closes. The PR adds no working-directory asset loading, network or admin behavior, destructive confirmation flow, or culture-sensitive number/date handling. Its directory preference call uses the existing preference store and replaces the previous close-path call rather than adding a new persistence mechanism.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file-parsing behavior is introduced. The production changes do not add XML, CSV, XLSX, YAML, archive, settings, or path-resolution parsing. The only changed data files are locale JSON files with fixed plain text values. They use the existing embedded catalogue path and encoding/json loading; the locale loader and text/template code are unchanged. New manifest reads are test-only and use fixed files in t.TempDir() produced by the test run. No external entities, formulas, arbitrary deserialization, or unbounded user-controlled input path is introduced.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes GUI work cancellation, window closing, application field registries, and slice cleanup. The diff adds no network filter, proxy, firewall, system-time, process-hook, Windows service, OS registry, or driver modification. The referenced registry is an application field registry, so the reversibility warning does not apply.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds user-facing status text for stopping and closing, with matching English and Polish entries. “Stopping” explains that the current step finishes first and prevents a partial file; “Closing” and its subtitle explain that the window closes after work stops. The PR adds no new non-obvious or icon-only control, no vague button label, no confirmation, and no error or raw-exception text. Existing Cancel wiring keeps the clear “Cancel” label.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. Each new worker has a cancellation path and closes its completion channel; window closing waits for all workers before scheduling Close (work.go, closing.go). Busy-face timers use the existing Later/callOff path, and closing.leave stops the quiet timer. Fields.KeepFirst and slices.Delete clear removed references instead of retaining controls or batches.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The changed files and PR description align. The PR addresses cancellation/closing behavior, stale field cleanup, and recipe-list cleanup, with related tests, race configuration, localization, and CHANGELOG updates. No unrelated significant refactor, duplicate feature, undocumented user-facing change, or backward-incompatible public/configuration/data-format change is evident.

- Line 499: Update the test around the manifest assertion so the worker cannot
finish before `host.intercept()` requests cancellation: add a deterministic
barrier in the write path and release it only after the close request. Keep
`waitUntilTheRunHasStarted` for detecting startup, but do not rely on file
existence to keep the run active or use sleeps and timing-based coordination.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Every change in behaviour comes with a test that fails without it.** A green
suite is not evidence on its own. The question to answer in the pull request
is "which test would go red if this change were undone". Each test in
`internal/guard` is also broken on purpose by an entry in
`internal/guard/mutation/entries.py`, and the `mutation` check on a pull
request runs the entries the change reaches. A new test needs an entry there,
or a line in `internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go` saying why it has none.

Tests for changed behavior: Warn if the PR changes or adds non-UI runtime behavior (not only docs, CI, config, assets,
pure UI layout or refactor without behavior change) and does not add or update tests
covering that behavior. Also warn if existing tests were deleted, skipped or had
assertions weakened without an explicit justification in the PR description.

545-545: Stability & Availability
The concern does not hold. g.damage.from is written only in the deferred closure of onFormatChosen, and rebuildDamageFields has only two callers. NewGenerate sets ready and then calls onFormatChosen immediately, so the first format pass sets from before any damage callback can run. onDamageChosen is guarded by ready, which is set only at that point. A call made while from is still zero therefore hits a guard and returns before KeepFirst runs.
The suggested guard is not needed for the code as it stands. Initializing from to g.fixed or clamping with max would change no reachable behavior.
internal/gui/parts/fields.go: 1
502-502: Stability & Availability
The comment's hazard is not reachable in the current code. The All() result is not held or iterated across a KeepFirst call anywhere in internal/gui, and the examples it names do not call Fields.All(). The aliasing is real, but no current path turns it into a nil dereference, so there is no defect to raise. No code change is needed.
…screen drawn is thrown away
The two guards that stop a run of four hundred files watched the folder for
its first entry and stopped the run from there, a bet that the run would
still be going a moment later. runner.HoldWhileWriting hands a guard the
run's context at every report of progress. The engine reports under one
lock, so holding the first report holds every writer, and the guards' hold
lets them go when the context is done - that is, when Cancel or closing the
window asked them to stop. waitUntilTheRunHasStarted has no callers left and
is removed. The seam takes a context rather than its channel, so the window
package declares no channel for it, and the shipped program pays a nil check
per report.
contextRoots names work.go begin in place of the three places the context
moved out of.
The first screen drawn in a process that has run other guards comes back
with a tab bar of no height (O148). Two guards drew a throwaway screen
first, the Tools layout guard did not, and it went red in the race job once
the guards were laid out so that it drew first. The warm-up is now in
renderScene, once a process, so no guard that draws a screen is without it.

On one that holds on to a write (a network share, a disk that went to sleep) the window stopped drawing for as long as the write took, and Windows offers to end a window that has not drawn for five seconds, which ends the process in the middle of a file.
internal/gui/window/work.gois what a screen keeps of its work, in place of the runner'sstopandsettledand the Tools tab'stoolJob. Cancel and the worker's news change the screen under one mutex. In the program both are on the interface thread and it is never contended. Under the toolkit's test driverfyne.Doruns on the worker, and without the lock the four guards that press Cancel during a run were 12 of 12 red under-race.work.goandclosing.goare declared in the concurrency guard and added to the race job's watched list, so this pull request changes.github/workflows/ci.yml.A change of damage leaves no fields behind
The generate screen kept the parameter fields of every damage chosen before in its registry. They start at a mark set where the format's fields end now. A guard compares the registry with the screen both ways.
A list cut short lets go of what it cut
Fields.KeepFirstclears the tail it cuts, and the recipe screen removes batches and contents withslices.Delete. The list of batches moved torecipelist.goto keeprecipe.gounder the file ceiling.Checks
