The eighth title batch of phase 2j (#752). prince and princess gain dated given readings, so each is a title only inside a title phrase (rules/H9). sheikh keeps its own batch.

What changes

input 1.4.0 – 2.6.0 now
Prince Fielder title Prince (given Fielder from 2.3.0, last in 1.4.0) given Prince, family Fielder
Mr Prince Smith, Ms Princess Smith (#853) title Mr Prince, Ms Princess title Mr/Ms, given Prince/Princess
Smith, Princess title Princess given Princess, family Smith
His Royal Highness Prince Harry, Prince of Wales, Grand Prince Vladimir title unchanged
Prince Harry title Prince, given Harry (2.3.0–2.6.0) given Prince, family Harry (the cost below)

No listed phrase holds either word, so nothing is reported. The other sites read as for king:

  • before a family comma H6 no longer peels the word (Prince Smith, John → family Prince Smith, 1.4.0's reading);
  • ending the name;
  • alone after a full name and a comma;
  • past a second comma.

Inside a phrase both words still address by the given name (#519).

The cost (rules/H9, Accepted; Derek, 2026-10-27)

A royal written with the bare title reads it as a name word (Prince Harry → given Prince), the class accepted for king, sultan and shaikh. A style or of keeps the title. rules/H9's Accepted bullet states it, and decisions/H9 records Derek's acceptance.

  • jrc-names: 43 persons have a spelling opening with a bare Prince/Princess (not followed by of). By my reading:
    • about 33 are royals;
    • 8 are people whose given name is Prince;
    • 2 are not persons (a fictional character and a place).
  • PSC: 12 of the 233 moved records file the word in the title box: 10 broken (6 Prince, 4 Princess, now set aside) and 2 changed.
  • One shape in jrc-names: Archduchess of X Princess Y. The title before the word is no partner of it, so the word reads given.

Worked examples moved

prince was a worked example in several places. Each now uses a word that reads exactly as prince did on master:

Measured

Against master ac81de9c, py3.11, every local corpus with --base; counts and token shapes only.

  • PSC: 205 fixed, 10 broken (the title-box filings above), 18 changed. Most of the changed records now read the given name right but split a two-word surname box.
  • ctgov-officials: 6 moved, all fixes:
    • 4 open with the word, 3 of them before a credential comma;
    • 1 glues an initial to it (J.Prince Aa, CRED);
    • 1 is Aa Prince, CRED, whose credential master read as the given name.
  • fec-individuals: 43, all fixes, every one AA, PRINCE… or AA, PRINCESS…; 28 of them had read no family name.
  • nepal-candidates: 3, all fixes.
  • jrc-names: 101 spellings moved (the royals above).
  • Spelling pairs: jrc-names 4 persons now alike, 0 apart; nepal-candidates 3 alike, 0 apart.
  • No moves: tse-donors, ukec-individuals, CLDR/GND agreement.
  • Committed corpora: Prince Charles and Prince Fielder (corpus_issues, Should a word that is both a title and a given name report an ambiguity? (Baron Davis → title 'Baron', no given name) #348's examples) move, beside the batch's own rule examples.
  • v1: Constants().titles keeps both words with no edit (Keep the titles 2.6.0 listed in v1's Constants().titles (#752) #904's sweep).

Not done here

migrate.rst has no 2.7 "Changed in" entry for the bare Prince Harry, nor for the king, sultan and shaikh batches' shapes. That is release-checklist work for 2.7.

Docs

  • rules/H9: examples, the royal Accepted bullet (with the default-order qualifier), and the modifier stand-in.
  • rules/H1, H7, O5: stand-ins.
  • decisions/H9: the dated entry, with the counts, the cost, Derek's decision and the measurement.
  • decisions/H1, H4: Standing and Open lines.
  • decisions/vocabulary-model: a pointer.
  • Release log: a bullet.
  • AGENTS.md: prince dropped from a list of TITLES surnames.
  • The two vocab entries: counts recorded.
  • Case rows: 7 new, 4 rewritten.

Checks

  • uv run pytest and --python 3.15: 31,706 passed each.
  • Also: -n0 -m serial, mypy, ruff, sphinx-build -b doctest.
  • Design-docs review in two rounds. The first found stale Standing lines in decisions/H1 and H4, the H1 Accepted bullet, the FEC count and the order qualifier. The second, over the fix commit, found one more order qualifier in decisions/H1. All are fixed here.

…ase (#752 phase 2j, #348, #853)

The eighth title batch of phase 2j. `prince` and `princess` gain dated
given readings, so each is a title only inside a title phrase,
unreported: `Prince Fielder`, `Mr Prince Smith` and `Smith, Princess`
read the given name, while `His Royal Highness Prince Harry` and
`Prince of Wales` keep the title. A royal written with the bare title
reads it as the given name (`Prince Harry`), the cost recorded for
Derek to decide.

`prince` was a worked example in H7, H1 and H9; each now uses a word
that reads as it did on master (`John of Bishop`, `Anne, Swami`,
`Her Royal Highness Princess Royal Anne`).

…se 2j)

decisions/H1 and H4 still gave the bare Prince Harry, Prince Fielder and
the John of Prince joins as current readings; rules/H1's Accepted bullet
named the row its fence had swapped for Anne, Swami; FEC's empty-family
count was 28, not 29; and rules/H9's royal bullet now says the given name
is the default order's.
