Description of your changes

project build had code to skip the examples, functions and operations directories when searching for APIs. It only ran when spec.paths.apis was exactly /, which can't happen: validation rejects absolute APIs paths, and an empty one defaults to apis. Every real build already scopes the API search to spec.paths.apis.

This change removes that block and the exclude parameter of collectResources. The API search is always rooted at spec.paths.apis. Behaviour doesn't change.

This replaces the earlier version of this PR, which fixed the excludes' prefix matching. Review pointed out the code is never used, so it's removed instead. It was split out of #436; see also #453. #455 has merged and this is based on it.

I have:

  • Read and followed Crossplane's contribution process.
  • Run ./nix.sh flake check to ensure this PR is ready for review. (go test ./internal/project/... ./cmd/crossplane/project/... and ./nix.sh run .#lint pass.)
  • Added or updated unit tests. (dead code removal, no behaviour change)
  • Linked a PR or a docs tracking issue to document this change. (no docs change)
  • Added backport release-x.y labels to auto-backport this PR.

Walkthrough

collectResources now anchors each non-empty exclude path at / and skips that path and its descendants. A new test checks exclusions for root-level directories and confirms that a similarly prefixed directory remains included.

Changes: Resource exclusions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Anchored exclusion matching
internal/project/build.go, internal/project/build_test.go
collectResources matches excludes against their /-anchored path and descendants. The test checks that excluded directories are omitted while /db/comp.yaml and /examples-foo/comp.yaml remain included.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only internal/project/build.go and internal/project/build_test.go. It changes no files under apis/** or cmd/**, so the specified breaking-change conditions do not apply.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

PASS: The pull request fixes existing project build exclude matching in internal/project/build.go. It does not add a new experimental feature or change apis/**. The existing project command remains maturity-gated, and the diff adds no new command, API, or experimental behavior that requires a feature flag.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the refactor and the scope (project package), and it says the change removes unused API path excludes. That matches the changeset, which removes the dead exclude block and the exclude parameter of collectResources. It is 50 characters, under the 72-character limit.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description directly addresses project build, API path handling, default excludes, and the removal of unused exclusion logic. It is related to the reported changeset, although it describes a later removal of the earlier prefix-matching fix.

Digging into the coderabbit comment here, I think I've convinced myself that the exclude handling is never actually used.

In the original version of the up DevEx tooling, we defaulted to searching the whole project for APIs, which is why we had these default excludes. In later versions, and forever in this (upstream) version, we default to apis/. Since we allow only relative paths in spec.paths, Spec.Paths.APIs can never be "/", which is the only case where we pass a non-empty set of excludes to collectResources.

Am I correct on this? If so, can we remove the excludes instead of improving dead code? :-)

APIs paths must be relative and default to apis/, so the only case that passed excludes (spec.paths.apis equal to "/") can't happen. Always scope the API search to spec.paths.apis and drop the exclude parameter from collectResources.

@adamwg You're right. APIs paths have to be relative and default to apis, so the / case never happens. I've removed the excludes instead of fixing them, and updated the title and description.
