fix(utils): key the advisory file lock by identity, not by path spelling - #2368
Part of the 2356 contract: the advisory lock in src/utils/fileLock.ts keyed proper-lockfile on path.resolve(filePath), so two callers that name one file differently take two locks.
Measured before writing it (.tmp-cr-audit/short-name-probe.mjs, pinned node v22.23.4, un-elevated): stat gives one identity for both spellings of a path - dev:ino 673102249:17451448568457636 for the 8.3 alias and the long form of the same directory - while fs.realpath and fs.realpathSyncreturn whatever spelling they are handed and only fs.realpathSync.native expands the alias. So canonicalizing by realpath text cannot produce a spelling-independent key, and identity is the only thing the probe shows both spellings share. Full measurement is in #2356 (comment); 2350 still owns which staging primitive survives, and this PR touches none of that.
What changed (src/utils/fileLock.ts +80/-2, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.test.ts +96/-1):
resolveLockKey returns dev:ino for a path that exists; for one that does not, the identity of the nearest existing directory plus the lowercased remainder. A basename with no inode yet is the residual case no identity can unify, and the function says so rather than pretending otherwise.
canonicalLockPath gives the spelling a lock artefact is created under, via fs.realpathSync.native on the existing part - the one canonicalizer that actually unifies the spellings - so an alias and its long form take one lock. proper-lockfile is still called with realpath: false, because the file may not exist yet.
Gating, disclosed rather than smoothed. The 8.3 case is gated on the property, not on the platform string: it runs dir /x against a freshly created long directory name and reports a skip with a reason where 8.3 generation is disabled, because fsutil 8dot3name query C: fails un-elevated (Error 5) and a Windows runner on a volume with generation off would otherwise produce a green that cannot fail. Locally the gate was open and the case executed and passed (A-REAL~1 generated for a 47-character name on this volume). The linux unit leg does not execute this case.
Verification. Focused spec utils/__tests__/fileLock.test.ts on pinned v22.23.4: Tests 6 passed (6). Two negative controls, each restoring the file afterwards:
canonicalLockPath returning the resolved spelling instead of the canonical one: 1 failed | 5 passed, failing exactly at expect(canonicalLockPath(aliasFile)).toBe(canonicalLockPath(file));
resolveLockKey returning the resolved spelling instead of identity: 2 failed | 4 passed, including the alias key assertion - the assertion this fix owes, and the one a spelling-preserving canonicalizer passes while the key is identity-backed.
eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 on both files: exit 0, and src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged apart from the prune run's own line-ending rewrite, which was discarded. prettier --check clean.

Tree note, so the check runs are read correctly:npx tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json reports one error - activate/registerCommands.ts(88,102) TS2739 missing the four *InTab command callbacks - and it is present at pristine 5319fe91fb in this worktree with the same dependencies, i.e. junction/dependency skew rather than anything in this diff; this commit adds no type error. CI on a clean install is the authoritative tsc for this branch.
Merge-order contention, measured rather than assumed: 16 refs in this series already modify src/utils/fileLock.ts (fws/u4-read-scope-recording, fws/u5-guard-core, fws/u9a, fws/u9b, vps2f-1913-u4, vps2f-1914-u5/u5a/u5b (= this branch's sibling, PR 2357), u5b-aprime-local, vps2f-1914-u5c, plus their origin/ copies), across at least three different fileLock.ts blobs. This PR deliberately goes against main rather than reaching into those branches, so merge order carries the reconciliation.
Amended twice after the first head ff93f8077b19; the figures below are for 945b24d20ddc. The first head exported a resolveLockKey key function that no code on this branch called, and the knip leg named exactly that: resolveLockKey function src/utils/fileLock.ts:67:17 under Unused exports (1) (hosted annotations are empty, count 0, so the job log is the only evidence and an empty annotation set is not a clean run). Making it module-private did not clear it: the repo's own no-unused-vars rule then reported 'resolveLockKey' is defined but never used at 67:10 - the same verdict from the other gate. So this head publishes no key function and keeps only canonicalLockPath, which acquireFileLock and withFileLock call in production; the dev+ino key derivation belongs to the write path that consumes it, and the chain carrying safeWriteText.ts already calls resolveLockKey in production. The knip leg on this head is a merge-order artefact, not a defect left in this unit.
Local knip does not reproduce the hosted finding, and the local failure is pre-existing.pnpm test:knip-policy exits 1 on this box on a different subtest - visual entries cannot hide helpers unused by the production application - whose assertion payload is {"files":[],"issues":[{"file":"webview-ui/package.json",..."devDependencies":[{"name":"vite"}],"binaries":[{"name":"vite"}]...}]}: an empty source set with no fileLock.ts entry. It fails the same way on the pinned v22.23.4 (tests 8 / fail 1) and it fails the same way at pristine 5319fe91fb in this same worktree, so the local red is about the box and the workspace, not about this diff. Under the system node it additionally warns Unsupported engine: wanted {"node":"22.23.4"}. The hosted job log therefore remains the only evidence for the original finding.
Figures for this head (main-tip selector selectFromGit(repoRoot, baseSha, headSha)): src/utils/fileLock.ts +54/-2 and src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.test.ts +106/-1 versus main; extension package 28 changed executable lines against MAX_CHANGED_LINES 500 - down from 38 on the first head, because deleting the dead helper removed counted lines rather than trimming a test.
The test moved from a pure-function assertion to the shipped behaviour: acquire the lock under the alias spelling, then attempt the same file under the long spelling and require ELOCKED rather than a second lock, with the lock table standing in for proper-lockfile said in the test's own comment; plus two companion cases (two files in one directory take two locks; one not-yet-existing path takes one lock while a different name takes another). Focused spec on pinned v22.23.4: Tests 5 passed (5). Negative control at the new layer - canonicalLockPath canonicalising by the resolved spelling instead of fs.realpathSync.native - gives 1 failed | 4 passed, failing on the contention assertion; a key-by-spelling control is inert on this head because the key function is no longer here, which is stated rather than reported as a passing control. eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 exit 0 on both files, prettier --check clean.
File locking now recognizes when the same file is accessed through alternate paths, including Windows short-name aliases and directory links. This helps prevent concurrent operations from bypassing one another’s lock.
Distinct files and paths that do not yet exist continue to receive separate locks.
File locks now use a key based on the device and inode of the nearest existing directory and the remaining path components. Lock artefacts stay beside the resolved caller path, and callbacks retain the caller’s resolved spelling.
The lock key uses the nearest existing directory’s device and inode, followed by the remaining path components. Tests cover Windows short-name aliases where supported, directory links, distinct files, missing paths, and callback path preservation.
Use canonical keys with caller-path lock artefacts src/utils/fileLock.ts, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.test.ts
acquireFileLock passes the canonical key to proper-lockfile and sets lockfilePath to the resolved input path plus .lock. The test checks this option.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code issue 2356: The issue describes path-text lock keys allowing Windows 8.3 aliases and long names to take different locks. This change addresses that lock-key behavior, while the issue notes that safeWriteText.ts is not changed.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 15140
The change has bounded testing and cleanup risks: alternate-spelling exclusion needs real-lock coverage, and tests leave temporary fixtures behind. The existing file-name alias locking defect also remains unresolved despite the stated identity-locking contract.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: the advisory file lock is now keyed by file identity instead of path spelling. It is specific and matches the objectives and the raw summary, which describe the canonicalLockKey identity key and the preserved caller spelling. The title is concise and uses the conventional fix(utils) prefix. The only minor issue is that the title is 72 characters, which is near the usual limit but still readable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It covers the linked issue reference (Part of the 2356 contract, with the issue URL), a detailed description of the implementation, and an extensive test procedure with negative controls and commands. The description is thorough, but it is long and dense for a reviewer. It does not use the exact template headings, and the 'Closes: #' line is replaced by a 'Part of the 2356 contract' reference, so the required linked issue is only referenced by URL and not by the 'Closes' field. The checklist items are not ticked, and the description contains contractions ('don't' is absent, but 'it's' style phrasing is mostly avoided). The Documentation Updates and Get in Touch sections are missing. Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes with the gaps noted.
Resolution
Add the 'Closes: #2356' line in the Related GitHub Issue section so the link matches the template. Add a Documentation Updates answer and a Discord username under Get in Touch. Tick the pre-submission checklist items that apply. Shorten the Description and Test Procedure sections to plain short sentences as the template asks.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The changes to src/utils/fileLock.ts derive a lock key and preserve the caller’s lockfile path. The test changes use fixed commands and temporary paths. No changed path shows a secret or PII leak, unvalidated input execution, or an approval or allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The change does not introduce a demonstrated persistence-integrity failure under this check. safeWriteJson still awaits lock acquisition, writes a temporary file, and renames it into place. The lock artefact remains at the same path as before.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The new contention test does not exercise the real lock protocol. fileLock.test.ts:82-88 mocks contention by the identity key, but proper-lockfile creates the lock at lockfilePath. fileLock.ts:93-95 supplies a caller-spelled path. The tests cover directory aliases, but not alternate leaf spellings, such as an 8.3 file alias or file link, which can produce different lock artefacts for the same file.
Resolution
Add a focused test with the real lock library that acquires through alternate leaf spellings and verifies contention and release. Fix the lock protocol if that test exposes separate locks.

acquireFileLock keyed proper-lockfile on path.resolve(filePath), so two callers that
name one file differently take two locks. On NTFS the spelling-preserving canonicalizers
cannot fix that: fs.realpath and fs.realpathSync return whatever spelling they are handed
and only fs.realpathSync.native expands an 8.3 alias, while stat answers both spellings
with the same dev+ino. canonicalLockPath therefore canonicalizes through the variant that
expands the alias, over the nearest existing directory when the file is not created yet,
so an alias and its long form arrive as one lock key. resolveLockKey computes the dev+ino
identity for consumers that compare locks by identity; it is module-private here because
this branch has no production caller yet, and the knip policy forbids a production export
whose only consumer is a test. The knip leg on this head is a merge-order artefact: the
chain that carries safeWriteText.ts calls resolveLockKey in production, so the export gains
its consumer when merge order puts the two files together.
The test asserts the shipped behaviour rather than a pure function: acquire under the alias
spelling, then attempt the same file under the long spelling, and require ELOCKED rather
than a second lock, with a test-side lock table standing in for proper-lockfile. The 8.3
case is gated on name generation probed with dir /x on a fresh long name (fsutil needs
elevation and fails with Error 5), not on the platform string, and it ran and passed here;
the linux unit leg does not execute it.
Reported on Zoo-Code-Org#2356. No suppression count changed.
Merge-order note, measured rather than assumed - and the honest reason this unit was cut against main instead of into a lane.
At PR 1914's head d2b65a5a2c75bfaf6d8a7edacb28544880813464 (fws/u5-guard-core), src/utils/fileLock.ts is 187 lines, blob 2ab8179b00cf, and it already declares canonicalLockPath, resolveLockKey and MAX_TOTAL_LINK_HOPS, with no statSync and no fs.realpathSync.native. That is the same blob I measured across fws/u5-guard-core, fws/u9a-task-history-delete, fws/u9b-provider-batch-delete and vps2f-1914-u5/u5a/u5b; 16 of the 92 refs in this series touch this file across at least three distinct blobs. This PR's src/utils/fileLock.ts is a different implementation on the same path.
Same two function names, different mechanisms: theirs walks link hops under a hop budget of 64, mine canonicalises through the one realpath variant that expands an NTFS 8.3 alias and keys off statdev+ino of the nearest existing directory. So the reconciliation is semantic, not textual - whichever of the two lands second has to be re-measured against the other (feed both spellings of one path and assert one lock, and re-run the negative controls) rather than rebased blindly.
Cutting against main and letting merge order carry it is also what keeps a fourth and fifth fileLock.ts from being written while 2350 is still deciding the staging primitive: 2350 owns that decision and 2356 is the contract it has to satisfy. No code, no review request, nothing resolved by this comment.

Resolve a mutation gap
Add or strengthen a focused test that fails under the mutation. If the mutant is equivalent, request maintainer approval for the narrowest mutator-specific exclusion and explain why it cannot change behavior:
// Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: normalized input cannot reach the alternate branch
const result = condition ? value : fallback
Broad all exclusions and exclusions without a concrete reason are reported as advisories.

Disclosure about the red platform-unit-test (windows-latest) leg, not a fix.
The runner named a file this PR does not touch. From run 42509800276, job 128820233870, step Run extension test lanes, the lane that failed is test:core:
All three failing rows are in src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts, under TaskHistoryStore best-effort deletion semantics:
FAIL ... > delete preserves the canonical file if backup cleanup fails
FAIL ... > deleteMany preserves the canonical file if backup cleanup fails
FAIL ... > deleteMany() continues the batch after a failed unlink, evicts every entry, and writes through exactly once
(the rows are quoted with the spec path and describe block written once here for length; the describe block is TaskHistoryStore best-effort deletion semantics and the stack lines in the log point at 145:22 twice and 255:68 with 255:4.)
Ownership is a measurement, not an inference. At main 5319fe91fb0caf4aa4ec66aac68fa03744ebbc23 that spec is blob 875c7dcb9a7d (11,862 bytes) and src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts is blob c1c50cca1e39. This PR's commit touches exactly two paths, src/utils/fileLock.ts and src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.test.ts, and git diff 5319fe91fb..945b24d20ddc contains no task-persistence path at all. In this run's windows job log the string fileLock appears 0 times and has no FAIL row, and the api lane - where src/utils/fileLock.ts is exercised - printed Test Files 114 passed (114).
The same bytes pass the same leg elsewhere, so this is run-specific rather than a property of the code. Those two blobs are byte-identical - 875c7dcb9a7d at 11,862 bytes and c1c50cca1e39 - not only at main and at this head 945b24d20ddc, but also at 7209a5f168 (PR 1914's head) and d4f3e9072e (PR 1930's head), because both of those heads contain current main. Both of those heads ran the same platform-unit-test (windows-latest) leg against those identical objects and each recorded completed/success on-head: 21 of 21 check runs on-head at 7209a5f168, 26 of 26 at d4f3e9072e. Same bytes, same runner class, opposite conclusions, about four hours apart. One caveat so nobody generalises wrongly: PR 1917's head carries a different spec blob - a512ceff883c at 78,701 bytes, because that branch predates the split - so a reader who checks three heads will see three different objects; only 1914 and 1930 are comparable here.
There is no baseline on main.GET /actions/runs?head_sha=5319fe91fb&event=push lists 4 runs (Publish Pre-release Extension, Label PR review state, and two CodeQL workflows, all completed/success) and none of them is the platform-unit-test lane, so main's own push at that sha never ran this leg and nobody may claim main is clean on it either.
The act that distinguishes a flake from runner-image drift is an admin rerun, and this token cannot fire it.POST /actions/runs/42509800276/rerun-failed-jobs answers 403 with Must have admin rights to Repository., and the run reads identical before and after the attempt (completed/failure, updated_at 2026-11-08T18:30:42Z). So: could a maintainer with admin rights on this repository rerun the failed jobs of run 42509800276? If it goes green, this was run-specific host behaviour; if the same three rows redden again, that is a reproducible platform-dependent failure in the history-store deletion spec, which belongs in its own issue rather than in a change to this PR. Nothing in this PR needs to change for this leg, and I am not proposing a skip or a rename of that spec.
Added after a measurement the branch owner asked for, because the ownership argument above was incomplete. The import graph reaches this PR's file even though the diff does not: at 5319fe91fb the failing spec is 11,862 bytes and imports withFileLock from ../../../utils/fileLock (that name appears 8 times in its body, fileLock 6 times, and line 26 mocks the module as { ...actual, withFileLock: vi.fn(actual.withFileLock) }, so the real module is loaded), and TaskHistoryStore.ts imports LOCK_STALE_MS from ../../utils/fileLock on its line 10. So the byte-identity of the spec and the impl proves those two files did not change; it does not prove the change to src/utils/fileLock.ts is not upstream of the failure. That part of the argument was weaker than it read, and it is corrected here rather than left standing.
Reproduction on a Windows box with the variable in hand. The spec takes its root from os.tmpdir() plus mkdtemp, and it has no win32 check, no process.platform check, no describe.skip, no it.skip and no skipIf (all zero occurrences), so TEMP is the controllable variable. An NTFS volume here generates 8.3 aliases for long component names - verified by listing the parent directory, not the directory itself: dir /x on the parent shows ALIASP~1 aliasprobe-…, MAIN-T~1 and HEAD-T~1. With TEMP/TMP set to a fresh directory under such a parent spelled in the short form (C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\ALIASP~1\MAIN-T~1 and …\HEAD-T~1), and node -e confirming os.tmpdir() reports exactly that spelling:
main 5319fe91fb: Test Files 1 passed (1), Tests 10 passed (10).
this PR's head 945b24d20dd: Test Files 1 failed (1), Tests 3 failed | 7 passed (10), with Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\ALIASP~1\HEAD-T~1\task-history-delete-semantics-…' on two rows and an AssertionError on the third - the same three rows the hosted runner names.
So the reproduction lands on this PR: under an 8.3-spelled temporary root the identical spec passes on main and fails three rows on this head, which is the same failure shape as the runner's (a path whose user component is RUNNER~1). The mechanism to look at is the canonicalisation this PR adds to src/utils/fileLock.ts against the warning main already carries at its line 36 (realpath: false, with the comment that the file may not exist yet). A probe on this box puts the asymmetry precisely: fs.realpathSync.native of the short-spelled directory returns the long spelling (C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\aliasprobe-…\main-tmpdir-root-for-delete-semantics-spec), plain fs.realpathSync of the same directory keeps the short spelling, the two stat results carry the same dev and ino, and the two spellings are not equal as strings. So a canonicaliser that calls the native variant rewrites the caller's spelling even though no symlink is involved and nothing about the file's identity changed.
Consequence. The line above that said this cannot come from this PR was not established; with the reproduction it is no longer a claim but a measured result, and it points at this PR's change. The 403 on rerun-failed-jobs and the no-baseline fact still stand, and the admin rerun is still worth firing for the hosted side - but the author-side repair is now mine to propose, and it will not be a skip or a rename of that spec. Second measurement: the reproduction run in both directions, and the four-way comparison the series needs. Same box, same spec, TEMP/TMP pointed at a fresh directory whose name has an 8.3 alias (alias presence verified from the PARENT with dir /x, which lists ALIASP~1, MAIN-T~1, HEAD-T~1), with node -e confirming os.tmpdir() reports the short spelling.

The swap was also run from the other side: this PR's tree carrying main's fileLock.ts gives Tests 10 passed (10), and main's tree carrying this PR's fileLock.ts gives Tests 3 failed | 7 passed (10). So the three rows travel with src/utils/fileLock.ts alone - that is a measurement, not an inference. The failing opens are …\task-history-delete-semantics-<random>\tasks\blocked-cleanup\history_item.json, spelled with the alias, and the third row is an AssertionError that the promise rejected with that ENOENT instead of resolving.
Two things I am not claiming. The split between the two reds and the green is not located to a line yet: what those four rows establish is that both reds hand the lock a spelling that differs from the caller's whenever an alias is present, while the green one canonicalises inside a link-following loop - whether that loop is the reason it stays green is inference from the code shape, not measurement. And my own instrumentation came back empty: console.error probes on canonicalLockPath (this PR) and on resolveFileLockPath (#1395) printed nothing in either red run while both runs stayed red, so the functions I instrumented are not the ones on the failing path, and the ENOENT is being produced elsewhere in what those changes restructured. I am reporting the null rather than quietly dropping it.
#1395 fails the same spec on the same hosted leg and its fileLock.ts contains no realpath call at all, so the trigger is not specific to the native variant: it is canonicalising a path whose component has an 8.3 alias while the caller keeps its own spelling. That is worth saying on that PR as well, and it is why I no longer treat this head's red as a runner-image question.
The 403 on rerun-failed-jobs and the no-baseline fact above still stand, and the admin rerun is still worth firing for the hosted side. The author-side repair is mine; it is a behavioural change to the lock machinery rather than a skip or a rename of that spec, and it goes to the maintainers with the mechanism before it lands. No commit was added to this branch and its head is unchanged at 945b24d20dd.
Mechanism, named rather than inferred (this is the part that was missing before: a code read of the delete path plus the aliased-root reproduction above, not an inference from shape).
The delete path is TaskHistoryStore.ts:285 (delete) and TaskHistoryStore.ts:315 (deleteMany), both calling deleteJsonFile(filePath) - that function lives in src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:79. At jsonFileRecovery.ts:80 it calls withFileLock(filePath, async (absoluteFilePath) => ...), and everything it later removes is derived from the argument the callback receives: fs.readdir(path.dirname(absoluteFilePath)) at :83, the leftover names from getTempFilePrefix(absoluteFilePath, "new" | "bak") at :9-:17, and the unlink targets built from those names.
Main's withFileLock hands that callback path.resolve(filePath) (main fileLock.ts:75). My head handed it canonicalLockPath(filePath) (fileLock.ts:127 to :132), and under an 8.3-spelled temp root that returned the long spelling. So the strings the spec guards with - target === backup at TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts:139-140 and p === historyFilePath(...) at :245 - stopped matching what the store was unlinking, the injected EACCES never fired, the delete ran to completion, and the rows that assert the canonical file survives a failed backup cleanup read a file that had already been deleted. Two spellings named one file and compared unequal as JS strings: a divergence in the argument, not in the filesystem and not in the artefact.
What the fix does to that line (151406a5e, fileLock blob 912f739fa3e3):
canonicalLockKey at src/utils/fileLock.ts:66 builds the key from statIdentity (:30) of nearestExistingDirectory (:43): the device and inode of the nearest directory that actually exists, plus the components below it that do not exist yet. When not even an ancestor exists it returns the resolved path - a path with no existing ancestor has no identity to key on, and every caller computes that one resolved path alike. There is deliberately no stat-failure fallback to a canonicalised path, because that is what would split two writers holding two spellings of a not-yet-created file.
acquireFileLock at :89 and :93 passes that identity as the resource and sets lockfilePath to the caller's resolved path plus .lock (lockArtefactPath at :84, passed at :94), so the artefact keeps the location safeWriteJson and the interruption tests address it at - safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts:209 ages the lock through its own targetPath plus .lock. proper-lockfile 4.1.2 takes the artefact from options.lockfilePath and only resolves the resource when realpath is on, which stays false at :98 for main's stated reason: the file may not exist yet.
withFileLock at :136 hands operationpath.resolve(filePath) at :141 - the caller's own spelling, never rewritten.
Which of the probe facts the fix stops depending on. The probe above established three things: fs.realpathSync.native expands the 8.3 spelling, plain fs.realpathSync and fs.promises.realpath keep it, and stat of the two spellings returns identical dev and ino. The module now makes no realpath call of any flavour - the only surviving line containing the word is the realpath: false option - so neither of the first two facts decides anything any more. What it does depend on is the third fact, the dev/ino equality, applied to the nearest existing ancestor. That is also why 1395's shape (a resolveFilePath with no realpath call at all) and this one land in the same place while my old head and 1395's did not: the failure was never the presence of a realpath call, it was the spelling handed to the callback.
Before and after, with both swap directions - interpreter C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-node22\node_modules\node\bin\node.exe (v22.23.4), core shard run from src, TEMP/TMP set to the 8.3 spelling of a long-named temp root:

Negative control. With only the callback argument re-diverged - withFileLock given statIdentity(path.resolve(p)) !== null ? fs.realpathSync.native(path.resolve(p)) : path.resolve(p), everything else as landed - the lock spec reports Tests 2 failed / 7 passed (9) and the two red rows are exactly one lock per file, not one lock per spelling > hands each caller back its own spelling rather than the canonicalised one and two spellings of one referent share one key > hands each spelling back to its own caller unchanged. Nothing else reddens, so the control fails for the alias/link reason and names the spelling that came back; it is not a timer. The second row uses a junction on Windows and a directory symlink on Linux, so the control is not Windows-only.
Gates on 151406a5e, same interpreter. Full unit shard: Tests 11 failed / 12342 passed / 37 skipped (12390), failing files MarketplaceManager.spec.ts, rules.spec.ts, parser.spec.ts - the identical three files and the identical 11 failures at 945b24d20dd with my change reverted (pre-existing on this box); the delta is +4 passing tests, which are the four new rows. Full core shard at 945b24d20dd with my change reverted: 196 passed (196), 4235 passed. At 151406a5e: first run Tests 1 failed / 4234 passed on Task.spec.ts:6099 (Test timed out in 20000ms), second run of the same shard on the same tree 4235 passed, and that file alone 210 passed (210) - one observed occurrence at one run with non-occurrence at two others on the same tree. safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts: 12 passed; an earlier draft of this fix moved the artefact into the directory under a hashed name and reddened those twelve rows, which is why the artefact location is now asserted rather than assumed. Hosted lint form eslint . --ext=ts --max-warnings=0 from src: exit 0, no output. Per-file eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 on both touched files: exit 0, zero problems; that prune run rewrites eslint-suppressions.json wholesale (1326 lines replaced by 1326, 30,910 to 33,294 bytes) while the parsed map is unchanged - 265 paths before and after, no count increased, none removed - so ae3d504003d7 is restored byte-for-byte and is not in the commit. Repo-root prettier --check .: clean. tsc --noEmit from src: only the pre-existing activate/registerCommands.ts(88,102) TS2739.

…spelling
The lock resource is the file's identity: the device and inode of the nearest directory
that exists, plus the components below it that do not exist yet. Two spellings of one
file - an 8.3 alias and its long form, a link and its target - arrive at the same
identity whether or not the leaf has been created, which is the case a canonical
spelling cannot serve: a path that does not exist yet has no canonical spelling, and
that is what realpath: false is there for.
No path is canonicalised any more. realpathSync.native is gone from the module, so
nothing in it depends on which of realpathSync, realpathSync.native and realpath
expands an 8.3 spelling. The artefact stays <file>.lock beside the file in the
caller's own spelling, which is where safeWriteJson and the interruption tests address
it, and callers get back the path they handed in, resolved rather than rewritten:
jsonFileRecovery's delete path derives its backup names and unlink targets from the
path withFileLock passes it, and under an aliased temp root a canonicalised spelling
stopped string-matching those targets, so the injected backup-cleanup failure never
fired and the canonical file was deleted anyway.
Measured on node 22.23.4: deleteSemantics under an aliased TEMP root 3 failed to 10
passed; the repaired file in main's tree 10 passed; the divergence reinserted in the
callback argument alone reddens exactly the two spelling rows and nothing else.

Part of the 2356 contract: the advisory lock in
src/utils/fileLock.tskeyedproper-lockfileonpath.resolve(filePath), so two callers that name one file differently take two locks.Measured before writing it (
.tmp-cr-audit/short-name-probe.mjs, pinned node v22.23.4, un-elevated):statgives one identity for both spellings of a path -dev:ino 673102249:17451448568457636for the 8.3 alias and the long form of the same directory - whilefs.realpathandfs.realpathSyncreturn whatever spelling they are handed and onlyfs.realpathSync.nativeexpands the alias. So canonicalizing by realpath text cannot produce a spelling-independent key, and identity is the only thing the probe shows both spellings share. Full measurement is in #2356 (comment);2350still owns which staging primitive survives, and this PR touches none of that. What changed (
