feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models - #2331
Friendli models now come from the public https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models endpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixed friendliModels list stays as a fallback.
src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.
FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, through getModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.
Friendli is now a dynamic provider. requestRouterModels always fetches its catalog.
Webview: The model picker and useSelectedModel use the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.
Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
Test Procedure
Unit tests:
cd src && npx vitest run api/providers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
cd webview-ui && npx vitest run src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useSelectedModel.spec.ts src/components/settings/utils/__tests__/providerModelConfig.spec.ts
pnpm check-types
The tests cover these cases:
Construction with no API key does not fail and does not fetch the catalog.
The fetcher calls the public URL and forwards the abort signal.
The handler loads the catalog one time, and waits for it before it streams.
An empty catalog falls back to the fixed list.
An unknown model ID keeps its ID when the catalog request fails.
The webview uses the fixed list before the router models load.
Manual check:
Run curl -s https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models. The response has a data list.
Select the Friendli provider in Zoo Code settings.
Open the model picker. It shows the models from the response.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Friendli can retrieve available models and details such as capabilities, context limits, and pricing from its public catalog without credentials.
Discovered models appear in settings and can be selected, including models not in the static catalog.
Static model information remains available while the catalog loads or when catalog details are unavailable.
Friendli is available as a dynamic provider, and configured model selections are preserved.
Toggle-only reasoning models can enable or disable reasoning without selecting an effort level.
Friendli is added to dynamic model handling. The system fetches and maps its public model catalog, includes Friendli models in router results, and uses fetched metadata in provider and webview model selection with static fallbacks.
Changes: Friendli model catalog

Summary
Recognize Friendli and map its catalog packages/types/src/provider-settings.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/provider-identifiers.test.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts
Friendli is added to the dynamic provider list. The fetcher validates catalog responses and maps chat model metadata, including limits, capabilities, prices, reasoning options, and descriptions. Tests cover mapping and failure cases.
FriendliHandler caches fetched models and exposes catalog fetching. Model lookup uses fetched metadata, then static metadata, then OpenAI sane defaults. Router model results include Friendli.
Use fetched Friendli metadata in model selection webview-ui/src/components/settings/utils/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/ApiOptions.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/*, webview-ui/src/components/chat/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/providers/__tests__/*, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/validate.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/ApiOptions.interactions.spec.tsx
The settings and chat model pickers and the selected-model hook use fetched Friendli metadata when available and fall back to the static catalog. Supporting test fixtures include Friendli router data.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models" matches the main change. The PR makes Friendli fetch its model catalog from the public /v1/models endpoint instead of relying only on the fixed list. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover every detail, such as the handler lifecycle, the webview changes, or the removed API-key requirement, but that is expected.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links issue #2332 with "Closes:", and it has Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes, and Get in Touch sections. The Description explains the how: a new fetcher that keeps chat models, the one-time catalog load in FriendliHandler, the fallback behavior, the dynamic provider change, and the webview changes. It also flags a reviewer-relevant behavior change: keyless requests now reach Friendli and fail with HTTP 401. The Test Procedure lists the commands, the covered cases, and a manual check. Minor gaps: the Get in Touch section gives no Discord username ("on request"), and the Visual Snapshots section says no snapshot applies, though the picker data does change for users. The checklist items are all marked, including the snapshot item, while the Visual Snapshots section says none applies. These gaps are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2332] Objective group 1, current model list: The model picker shows the models Friendli serves now. getFriendliModels in src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts calls https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models with no credentials. It skips entries whose mode is not chat. Friendli is in dynamicProviders, requestRouterModels and webviewMessageHandler.ts fetch its catalog, and providerModelConfig.ts returns non-empty fetched models as-is. Models removed upstream therefore drop out once the catalog loads.
[#2332] Objective group 2, per-model values: The fetcher maps context_length (context window), max_completion_tokens (max output), pricing.input/pricing.output/pricing.input_cache_read (prices and cache-read price), input_modalities (image input), and reasoning_options (reasoning effort, plus binary support for toggle-only models). FriendliHandler resolves model info from fetched records first, so these values reach the request and the UI.
[#2332] Objective group 3, fixed-list fallback: FriendliHandler uses friendliModels or openAiModelInfoSaneDefaults when the catalog load fails or returns no entries. providerModelConfig.ts and useSelectedModel.ts use the fixed list before router data loads.
Non-coding items (manual curl check, Discord contact) do not apply. The PR does not report executed test output. This result rests on the source of the fetcher at head and the test coverage described in the PR summary, not on executed tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2332] Changes that implement the objectives: the new Friendli fetcher; FriendliHandler catalog loading, waiting, caching, and fallback; friendli in dynamicProviders (provider-settings.ts, provider-identifiers.test.ts); requestRouterModels and webviewMessageHandler.ts; GetModelsOptions in shared/api.ts; getStaticModelsForProvider, ModelSelector.tsx, ApiOptions.tsx, and useSelectedModel.ts; and the matching test fixture updates.
Changes that the PR description does not list, but that relate to #2332:
buildFriendliReasoningParams handles toggle-only models (supportsReasoningBinary without effort levels). It sets enable_thinking, parse_reasoning, and include_reasoning. This follows from the reasoning-effort correctness that #2332 requires. It also applies to fixed-list entries that match the rule.
Catalog wait, timeout, and cancellation handling in createMessage and completePrompt. This supports the requirement that the handler load the catalog before its first request.
Null-prototype result and own-property lookup of model IDs. This keeps upstream IDs such as __proto__ safe during catalog lookup.
getModel() keeps a configured model ID that is absent from the fixed list. The PR description states this behavior.
No change was shown to be unrelated to #2332. The PR description omits some of these changes. This is a documentation gap, not a scope failure. The HTTP 401 behavior for requests without an API key follows from the public-catalog design and is a stated behavior change.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused tests cover catalog mapping, fallback, cancellation, reasoning, and model selection. The UI change affects model data rather than layout. Tests were not run in this environment. Prior failure addressed: Commit 3c2aa5b adds a fetcher test with no high effort. It asserts the supported efforts and the low default in src/api/providers/fetchers/tests/friendli.spec.ts:106-121.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path shows a concrete security-boundary failure. The catalog fetch uses a fixed public URL, validates the response shape, and stores model IDs in a null-prototype object. Friendli model selection remains subject to the existing organization allowlist checks.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed Friendli catalog path uses the existing model cache. The cache awaits writes through safeWriteJson, which uses staged replacement and rollback. The diff does not introduce a matching persistence integrity failure.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed paths use per-request abort bridges and dispose them on completion or failure. Catalog loading is shared and bounded. The tests cover repeated keyless calls with a reused signal and early stream exit. Prior failure addressed: src/api/providers/friendli.ts now bridges the caller signal in completePrompt and disposes the bridge in finally. src/api/providers/tests/friendli.spec.ts covers repeated keyless calls that succeed and fail with a reused signal.

84-89: Prevent a failed or empty catalog fetch from being retried per handler construction.
modelsLoad is memoized per handler instance. A new handler repeats the fetch when the cache is empty. The fetch now starts lazily in createMessage and completePrompt, not in the constructor. This addresses the earlier construction-time concern. No further action is needed.

Retry an empty or failed catalog on the next request.
If the first catalog load returns {} or rejects, modelsLoad remains settled. Later requests on the same handler never retry, so a fetched-only model keeps fallback metadata after the catalog recovers. Clear the settled promise on empty results and failures while retaining the shared in-flight promise. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded already implements that retry pattern. Guard Friendli model lookups against inherited properties.
When the configured ID is toString or constructor and the catalog lacks that ID, useSelectedModel returns an inherited function as metadata. The task header then displays a one-token context window, while the backend uses 128,000. Use own-property checks and the backend’s sane-default fallback.

Update FriendliProvider.getModel to resolve configured IDs only from own
properties of the model catalogs, so inherited names such as toString or
constructor cannot become model metadata. When neither catalog owns the ID,
return the backend’s existing sane-default model metadata so the displayed
context window matches backend behavior.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a Friendli handler test that returns an empty catalog, then a nonempty
catalog on the same handler. Verify the retry updates model metadata and the
successful result is retained.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Bridge the caller’s signal to a per-request signal and detach the bridge on
completion, failure, cancellation, and early generator exit. Add a test that
reuses a signal across completed streams and checks listener cleanup.

Source excerpt: **Patch Gate (`target: 70%`)**: New or modified lines in PRs touching `webview-ui/src/` must meet minimum test coverage, ensuring state changes and new UI logic stay tested over time.
The OpenAI SDK never removes its abort listener from the signal it receives,
so passing the task's long-lived signal leaked one listener per request.
Hand the SDK a per-request signal and detach it when the stream ends.
- tests: listener cleanup across reused, failed and early-exited streams
- tests: an empty catalog is retried and the next nonempty one is kept

Add a fetcher test with recognized effort values that exclude `high`. Assert
that the supported values and the first supported default are returned.

Bridge the caller signal for `completePrompt` as well, and dispose the bridge on
success or failure. Add coverage for repeated keyless calls using the same
signal.

completePrompt passed the caller's signal straight to the SDK, which never
removes its abort listener, so reusing one signal leaked a listener per call.
Use a per-request signal and detach it on success or failure.
- tests: repeated keyless completePrompt calls reusing one signal
- tests: effort default falls back to the first supported value without high

Description
Friendli models now come from the public
https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/modelsendpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixedfriendliModelslist stays as a fallback.src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, throughgetModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.requestRouterModelsalways fetches its catalog.useSelectedModeluse the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
