feat(webview): per-view ack, history and profile restore writes (N5, split 5/5 of #1546) - #2237
Split unit N5 of #1546 (per-view ack, history and profile restore writes)
Final unit of the split plan (tracking issue: fork issue 41), on top of N4 (#2236). Completes the pure F1a content.
Scope
postMessageToWebview posts synchronously without awaiting the webview ack, with the per-view state ack wired through the message listener.
History restore (createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked, updateTaskHistory) and mode switch (handleModeSwitchUnlocked) keep the per-view buffer/persisted entry authoritative.
Profile activation/delete re-pins the view-local state; handleZooCodeCallback and dispose clean up per-view state without leaking another view's entry.
Focused tests for ack ordering/logging, restored-mode validation and profile-sync behaviour.
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
Final split unit N5: non-awaiting postMessageToWebview with view-state ack, history restore via createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked/updateTaskHistory, profile activation/delete re-pin, handleModeSwitchUnlocked and dispose cleanup. Completes the pure F1a content.
Modes, provider profiles, and API configurations are managed independently for each view, preserving selections when switching between views.
Returning to a task restores its mode for that view.
Improvements
Settings imports apply supported settings while ignoring saved per-view selections; exports omit those selections.
Changes to modes and provider profiles remain more reliable during rapid updates and resets.
Bug Fixes
Removing an unavailable provider profile handles stale selections more cleanly and updates affected views.
The extension adds claim-bound per-view settings for modes and provider selections. ClineProvider restores and synchronizes these settings across task-history and profile workflows. Global-state writes track generations for failure recovery and resets. Webview message dispatch no longer waits for renderer acknowledgement.
Per-key write generations support cache recovery after failed writes and resets. Tests cover overlapping failures and export filtering.

Task restoration, mode changes, and profile operations update view-local state. Missing profiles use a typed error. Tests cover profile synchronization, deletion, and persistence failures.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2236: Adds batch persistence, guarded rollback, and reset cleanup for per-view state.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1550: Merges the view-local buffer into getState(), which this change updates through restoration and profile workflows.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 22b8d
The mutation-testing CI check fails because the change exceeds its 500-line limit, so the PR needs to be split or get a maintainer exception. Five minor review concerns from earlier rounds also remain open. Resolve or explicitly accept them before merging.

Explanation
The prior secret leak remains. After profile activation, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3223-3244 puts credential-bearing settings in the view buffer. The changed getValues() returns that nested object at lines 4508-4510. src/extension/api.ts:626-629 filters only top-level keys, so an API caller can retrieve apiConfiguration.apiKey or another provider credential.
Resolution
Exclude credential-bearing apiConfiguration from getValues() or redact all nested secret fields before getConfiguration() returns them. Add a regression test that activates a profile with credentials and verifies the API returns none.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Persistence failures remain: - ClineProvider.ts:1993-1999 saves a fallback mode only in viewStates. The launch handler does not register a stable view ID, and loadViewState skips an unowned temporary ID (ClineProvider.ts:999-1003). After provider recreation, a different shared mode can replace the persisted fallback. - Profile deletion commits deleteConfig before the list and view repairs (ClineProvider.ts:3017-3034). If the list write fails, the deleted profile remains selected or listed without compensation or an explicit partial-failure result. - Profile save and activation add per-view writes after the profile or manager selection is committed (ClineProvider.ts:2899-2932, 3223-3245). If a new per-view write fails, the earlier writes can remain committed without operation-level compensation. - Claim delivery still discards the result after the claim is stored (ClineProvider.ts:739-754, 802-803). If stable-ID registration is wired and delivery fails, a later launch cannot present the claim. The current launch handler does not yet call setViewStateId, so this claim scenario is currently dormant.
Resolution
Register and restore stable view IDs on launch, including propagation of persisted fallback modes. Make profile save, activation, and deletion atomic, or compensate committed writes and explicitly report incomplete compensation. Ensure claim delivery is recoverable without leaving an inaccessible persisted entry.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior coverage gap remains. The PR adds deletion error handling and durable re-pinning in ClineProvider.ts:3017-3026, 3064-3164. The three tests at ClineProvider.spec.ts:5601-5767 all make deleteConfig succeed. None checks durable viewStates after deletion or the activation retry failure. The manager test covers the error type, not the provider's handling. The prior verdict incorrectly said the second test covers a sibling-only pin; it sets the deleted profile as the shared selection and pins both views.
Resolution
Add focused provider tests for typed not-found cleanup, unexpected deletion failure without cleanup, and failed activation after retry. Assert shared and durable selections for active and sibling views after deletion. Also cover a profile pinned only by a sibling and verify that the deleting view remains unchanged.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A changed cancellation path still performs work after timeout. handleModeSwitch uses the timeout-bounded mutation queue, which aborts its signal after 30 seconds. handleModeSwitchUnlocked now awaits setValue("mode", newMode); setValue awaits the serialized savePersistedViewState write queue. The method then emits ModeChanged without checking signal.aborted. With lockApiConfigAcrossModes enabled, it also posts state and returns before the first abort check. A stalled durable view-state write can therefore complete after cancellation and trigger the event and webview update. The added tests cover an already-aborted signal and cancellation during config reads, but not cancellation while setValue is pending.
Resolution
Check signal?.aborted immediately after await this.setValue("mode", newMode) and before ModeChanged. Add guards after each remaining awaited operation in handleModeSwitchUnlocked, including task-history persistence, the lock-on webview post, metadata/config reads and writes, profile activation, and the final webview post. Add a regression test that stalls the durable viewStates write past PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS, resolves it after timeout, and verifies that no post-cancellation event, profile mutation, or webview post occurs for both lock-on and lock-off paths.

- omit viewStates (host-minted claim tokens) from settings export
- keep a pre-launch selection when registration re-keys onto an existing stable entry
- narrow saveViewState keys to the durable per-view subset
- skip rollback when another provider wrote a newer shared value
- restore the ContextProxy cache when globalState.update rejects
- clarify that the claim is enforced by setViewStateId; launch wiring follows

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2361 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Move the TaskModeSwitched emit and _taskMode update after the per-view write.
TaskModeSwitched fires and _taskMode changes before the per-view setValue("mode") write. If that write fails, the error propagates, but the event and task mode stay changed. Observers see a rejected switch, and a reload restores the previous view selection. Reordering is not verified safe, so no diff is proposed. Check ModeChanged and profile-activation ordering before changing it.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Refresh sibling view buffers when a profile changes.
getConfiguration() reads the sidebar view's buffer through getValues(), and the buffer overrides the shared store. The buffer keeps a copy of profile P's apiConfiguration from loadViewState(). When another view activates or saves P, the sidebar buffer is not updated, so getConfiguration() can return the old P settings.
The sibling-refresh comments at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 and in the activation branch of persistProviderProfile describe a refresh that the code does not perform. The save-only branch at lines 2702-2716 refreshes only the pinned current view.
Do not replace the buffer with shared-store values. Each view keeps its own pinned profile in that buffer. Instead, refresh the buffered apiConfiguration of every other live view that holds P when P is saved or activated. Alternatively, resolve the buffered profile from providerSettingsManager when getConfiguration() runs. Update the comments to match the behavior that is implemented. The comments that say getState() is shadowed are inaccurate, because getState() reads the shared store.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4108-4110 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Restored history mode is missing from the posted state during restore.
History restore now writes the mode only to the view buffer. Profile activation then posts state before the restored task exists, so the webview receives the pre-restore shared mode until a later post. The base wrote the shared mode before this post, so the stale window is new.
This changes only the posted mode field. getState() and profile binding stay unchanged, and an active task keeps precedence through currentTaskMode.

Update the restored mode selection used for the state returned by getValues so
it checks viewLocalState.mode after currentTaskMode and before the shared mode
and default; preserve active-task precedence and leave getState and profile
binding unchanged.
Assert the restored mode in the deleted-mode sticky-mode test.
The PR removes the only assertion on the fallback slug during history restore. The remaining test, should handle mode deletion between sessions, checks only that createTaskWithHistoryItem resolves and that handleModeSwitch is not called with "deleted-mode". If the fallback were removed, historyItem.mode would stay "deleted-mode" and this test would still pass.
The suggested assertion must not use defaultModeSlug as a bare identifier. The sticky-mode spec does not import it. Use the literal "code", which matches this spec's mocked defaultModeSlug.
🧪 Suggested test assertion
In src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, inside should handle mode deletion between sessions:
// Initialize task with history item - should not throw
await expect(provider.createTaskWithHistoryItem(historyItem)).resolves.not.toThrow()
// Verify mode switch was not called with deleted mode
expect(handleModeSwitchSpy).not.toHaveBeenCalledWith("deleted-mode")
+ // Verify the restore falls back to the default mode+ expect(historyItem.mode).toBe("code")

…opped
This commit touches one file: src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts.
The two upstream/main merges on this branch (61189bb, d46d7b2) resolved that
file toward our side and dropped 72 declarations that main carries at e943530 -
the whole "webview heartbeat watchdog" suite (70 declarations, 1,912 lines) plus
two top-level .each tables (the diagnostics-broker router and the dev-server probe
fallback). An AST title inventory over all 932 spec files in this tree finds none
of the 72 anywhere else, and no distinctive token from any of their bodies appears
in another spec, so this is deleted coverage rather than a rewording. The four
sibling heads (Zoo-Code-Org#2226, Zoo-Code-Org#2227, Zoo-Code-Org#2236, Zoo-Code-Org#2237) each still carry all 72.
All 72 are re-adopted from main: every adopted body is byte-identical to main's
modulo repo prettier formatting, and no assertion is re-pointed to a different
seam. The suite needs harness plumbing this file had also lost, so the commit
restores exactly that and nothing more: the pWaitFor import, the ViewColumn,
getCommands and createWebviewPanel doubles, a showWarningMessage double that
resolves, and the show member on the sidebar and output-channel doubles. Net
effect: 1,996 added / 27 removed lines as git counts the diff in one file (the only
pre-existing line whose text changes is the showWarningMessage double; the other
"deletions" are identical blocks re-paired by the diff), zero executable lines
changed, and no eslint suppression count moved.
Controls: with mockWebviewView.show removed again the explicit-retry recovery case
livelocks and the worker dies at 122s, so that restored double member is
load-bearing rather than cosmetic. Moving WEBVIEW_WATCHDOG_TICK_MS off 60_000 fails
47 of the adopted cases, never registering the watchdog interval fails 57, and
short-circuiting retryWebviewRecovery fails 14. On the unmutated tree all 381 cases
in the file pass, including the 96 re-adopted heartbeat cases and the 6 re-adopted
table cases.
…ck generation guard
_restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite gates every key on the per-key write generation the
setter captured. ContextProxy counts only cached global-state writes: secrets go through
storeSecret and pass-through keys straight to the Memento, and neither advances the map, so
those keys are captured with generation 1 and still read 0 afterwards. The guard is never
satisfiable for them, which exempts exactly the keys whose value cannot be compared back
(a secret is not in getValues, a pass-through key is not cached) from the rollback of their
own failed attempt: after a failed per-view write the secret and the durable task history
stay at the value the failed attempt wrote while every other key is restored.
The filter now skips the generation clause for keys the repo's own predicates say ContextProxy
does not count - isSecretStateKey from @roo-code/types and isPassThroughStateKey from
../config/ContextProxy - and keeps it everywhere else. ClineProvider.ts 6456 -> 6464 lines.
Tests (three cases, all red before the change).
- a secret key (nanoGptApiKey) written alongside a counted key with the per-view write
failing: asserts the store moved to the new value and the cache is back to the old one;
failed with expected 'new-secret' to be 'old-secret'. storeSecret is fire-and-forget, so the
attempted value is asserted by presence, not order.
- a pass-through key (taskHistory) in the same shape: asserts the Memento was written the new
history and then the old one; received only the new write before the fix. The double delegates
to the real store, because replacing it would also silence the read-back the guard compares.
- the guard's own case: a concurrent provider re-writes the very value the attempt wrote, so
only the generation distinguishes them; asserts the newer write stands. Without the generation
clause it reads expected 'architect' to be 'code'.
Controls (ClineProvider.ts snapshotted at 8a5977a, restored by content hash after each):
drop the exemption (the previous guard) -> the secret and pass-through cases fail and the
other three pass; delete the generation clause -> only the same-value case fails, so the guard
is still load-bearing for counted keys; delete only the secret arm -> only the secret case
fails; delete only the pass-through arm -> only the pass-through case fails.
Gates: prettier --check clean; tsc --noEmit -p . clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on both
files with no suppression count changed; vitest core/webview + core/config 44 files / 1304
tests green (1301 before, +3 cases). Scope 815 -> 818 extension executable lines (types 8).
…g rows
CodeRabbit's point measured rather than argued. The two it.each rows share the store order
["Zoo Gateway", "Other", "Zoo Gateway 2"], so only one of them can ever fail
expect(...).not.toContain("Other"): with the stale profile first the every-profile loop breaks
before it reaches the non-gateway profile, so that row cannot observe the filter at all.
Mutants run against 27a2836, production untouched (blob 8a5977a, restored by content hash
after each):
- drop the provider filter in ensureZooGatewayProfileSeeded: fixture as shipped -> 1 of the 2
rows fails (expected [ 'Zoo Gateway', 'Other', ...1 ] to not include 'Other'); with "Other"
leading the store -> both rows fail. The assertion goes from one-row to two-row coverage.
- check only the first gateway profile (the bug the comment describes): 1 row fails on the
handleZooCodeCallback assertion, before and after the reorder, so the reorder does not weaken

…when it fails
This branch had no write guard at all. There was no reset flag, storeSecret() had nothing telling it a
reset was in progress, and resetAllState() cleared the two caches, deleted every global-state and secret
key in a single Promise.all and reinitialized - the success path being the only path. A save issued while
a reset was still inside its deletes could therefore land after the deletes and put back a value the user
had just erased. This commit introduces the guard, so on this branch the refusal is new behaviour rather
than a repair of an existing one, and it should be read as scope rather than as a bug fix to code that
already refused writes.
What lands: a resetting field, a rejection at the top of storeSecret() carrying the key in failed so a
caller can tell a refused save from a committed one, resetting raised as the first statement of
resetAllState() and lowered in a finally wrapping the whole body. The body itself is untouched: this
lineage has neither a pending-write barrier nor write-owner clears, and importing them from Zoo-Code-Org#2235 would
have imported a different unit's design instead of answering this unit's defect. initialize() performs no
writes, so the refusal cannot make a reset wait on itself.
Two cases, because the guard has two halves and the refusal is the new observable here, so it is tested on
its own rather than as a phase of the leak case:
- refuses a secret write issued while a reset is still inside its delete pass
- accepts a secret write again after a reset whose delete pass rejected
Assertions read captured call arguments (mockSecrets.store.mock.calls filtered on the key) and the cache
and storage read-backs, not toHaveBeenCalledWith: that matcher compares the way toEqual does and drops
undefined-valued keys, so a loose matcher would pass on a tree where nothing is refused at all.
Controls, measured in five steps rather than described. Baseline at e398b67: Test Files 10 passed
(10), Tests 314 passed (314). Refusal case alone with production untouched: 1 failed | 314 passed (315),
AssertionError: expected undefined to be an instance of SettingsWriteError - with no refusal the mid-reset
save simply succeeds. Guard and refusal with the flag lowered only on the success path: 10 passed (10),
315 passed (315). Leak case added against exactly that shape, which is the negative control for the
finally: 1 failed of 316 with the production consequence in the message - promise rejected
"SettingsWriteError: Could not store apiKey: secret writes are refused while state is being reset"
instead of resolving. With the try/finally: Test Files 10 passed (10), Tests 316 passed (316), identical
before and after prettier.
gates: tsc -p . --noEmit exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored on both files exit 0, and the
recorded suppression counts for the two touched files stand at 1 and 5 across a --prune-suppressions run;
prettier --check exits 0 on the working copies and 0 on the HEAD copies fed through the same invocation,
so a format failure here would be this commit's. src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
Size posture, with the pair printed: scripts/stryker-diff.mjs ci --base
e943530 (main's tip, this PR's recorded base) --head
e398b67 (this commit's parent) exits 1 and puts the
extension bucket at 566 changed executable lines against MAX_CHANGED_LINES 500. This commit
adds 29 added / 14 deleted in src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts plus 69 lines in its spec, and the spec half
is excluded from the bucket by the /__tests__/ segment at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85. Stryker itself could
not start locally for either package (spawnSync node_modules\.bin\stryker ENOENT), so no mutants were
scored here and only the size line is a real measurement; it belongs in the PR body or the maintainers'
queue rather than being argued in a commit on a branch declared final.
This ports the answer measured on vps2/n2-viewstates-durability and vps2/n4-values-reset so the three
sibling units do not ship three different answers to one defect. It closes no review row on this PR of
itself.
Mutation-gate measurement for this push, stated here so it is dated and attributed rather than only inside a commit message.
Command and pair, printed rather than recalled: node scripts/stryker-diff.mjs ci --base e943530c848624bd3054c960be1e4fb0b658509a --head <sha> run locally against vps2/n5-ack-history, where the base is upstream/main's tip and this PR's recorded base.
parent e398b6737ddb52513dfe986eb59fdc321537d324: extension bucket 566 changed executable lines against MAX_CHANGED_LINES = 500 (already over the cap before this commit)
head e9ac2639d73a01fa61b6e3541c0a97f8ed4c8cd9: extension bucket 585 changed executable lines
The commit in between answers a reset-guard defect in src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts (+29/-14 there, +69 lines in its spec, which the gate excludes through the /__tests__/ segment at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85). So this push deepens a size failure that already existed on #2237 by 66 lines before it, rather than starting one.
Two caveats stated with the number. Stryker itself does not run in this checkout - the script spawns node_modules\.bin\stryker, which is not installed here, so every run exits on spawnSync ... ENOENT and scores zero mutants; the size line above is the only part of the run that is a measurement, and the survivor list for the changed file stays unscored locally. And the CI figure for the same branch is a different number for a different reason than a moved diff, so the two should be quoted with their basis rather than compared as if they measured the same thing.
This is not an argument for writing the guard in fewer lines or adding a Stryker directive: it is the fact that either a narrow maintainer-reviewed exclusion or a split has to answer the size, and it is stated here so nobody has to diff the commit out to find it.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused `ClineProvider` tests in
`src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts` under
`describe("deleteProviderProfile")`: 1. Make `deleteConfig` reject with
`ProviderSettingsNotFoundError`. Assert that the call completes, that the stale
entry is pruned from `listApiConfigMeta`, and that the durable `viewStates`
entries for the active and sibling views are repaired. 2. Make `deleteConfig`
reject with an unexpected `Error`. Assert that `deleteProviderProfile` rejects
and that no cleanup runs: `listApiConfigMeta` is unchanged, and the `viewStates`
entries and view-local state are unchanged. 3. Add a case where the deleted
profile is the active profile. Assert the survivor selection in the shared store
(`currentApiConfigName`), in view-local state, and in the durable `viewStates`
entry for every affected view. 4. Add a case where the deleted profile is pinned
only in another live view. Assert that the sibling's buffer and durable
`viewStates` entry are re-pinned to the survivor, and that the active view's
selection is unchanged. 5. Optionally add a case where `activateProfile` fails
twice. Assert that `managerNameUpdateFailure` surfaces to the caller and that
shared-state repair still completes.
- Security Boundaries:
Do not expose credential-bearing `apiConfiguration` through
`ClineProvider.getValues()` or `API.getConfiguration()`. Return only non-secret
configuration, or recursively redact every secret field in nested profile
objects. Add a regression test that activates a profile containing `apiKey` and
verifies that `getConfiguration()` contains no nested credentials.
- Persistence Integrity:
Await claim delivery with a bounded retry or revoke the stored claim when
delivery fails. Make profile save, activation, and deletion transactional, or
compensate every committed profile, selection, mode mapping, shared setting, and
per-view write. If compensation fails, return and log an explicit
partial-failure result. Add failure-injection tests for claim delivery and each
profile operation after an earlier write succeeds.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
1. In `handleModeSwitchUnlocked`, check `signal?.aborted` immediately after
`await this.setValue("mode", newMode)` and return before
`this.emit(RooCodeEventName.ModeChanged, newMode)`. 2. Check the signal after
each remaining awaited step in the path: the task-history update, the
workspace-lock `postStateToWebview()`, the `listApiConfigMeta` write, the
mode-config lookup, profile activation, the mode-config write, and the final
webview post. 3. Add a regression test in `ClineProvider.spec.ts`. The test
stalls the durable `viewStates` write past `PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS`,
resolves it after the timeout, and asserts that no `ModeChanged` event, profile
mutation, or webview post occurs after cancellation. Cover both the lock-on and
lock-off paths.

resetState cleared only this view's view-local buffer, but the shared store it just cleared is what
every view reads from - and getState() reads the view-local buffer first. A sibling view therefore kept
serving its pre-reset mode (and its stale settings) after the reset. Every live instance is cleared now.

…posing in the mock
Two test-quality findings from review: the new provider-settings doubles used `(provider as any)` plus
`as any`, when the file already has a named view for that (MemberSwapTarget), and the sticky-mode view
mock fired onDidDispose's callback during registration, so the view was disposed before
resolveWebviewView finished and the stale check took the sidebar branch. The mock now only returns a
disposable; tests that need a disposal fire it themselves.
ClineProvider.spec 397 + sticky-mode 27 passed, tsc --noEmit 0 errors, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0
(suppressions pruned, total down, never up).

Refresh only - no code authored here. The sha is upstream/main's tip read from ls-remote of
refs/heads/main at the moment of merging; the fork's own main is four weeks behind it and is not a
merge basis worth using. The merge applied cleanly: zero conflicted files, and the only paths both
this branch and main touched since the merge base are listed in the run log for this worktree.
Why the refresh is a merge and not a fast-forward: this head is not an ancestor of main, so CI's
merge ref gets a new first parent, and the mutation-diff job scores this merge against that parent.
The numbers move because the base moved, not because behaviour changed.
Carried here at the Lead's request; measured on the vps2-f #1913 lane, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node 25.9.0).
mutation-diff on #1913 went failure -> success by merging main, and back to failure on the next commit:
e62f198ce, before merging main: failure, check-run 125486348227, workflow run 41506292261. Gate
line as recorded there: "Mutation gate failed: extension has 589 changed executable lines (limit
500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion."
e3d632799, four commits after merging main 73931fe8: success, check-run 128619142516, workflow
run 42444051212.
8fa7d858c, ~14 new executable lines later: failure, check-run 128620716380, workflow run 42444581569.
The mechanism is visible in the PR's own delta: +5188/-161 against the old base, +5153/-39 against 73931fe8. Merging main shrinks the changed-executable-line count, so on a cap-class red it is the
cheapest lever available on this series - and the gain is not durable, as the third row above shows.
Two things I am not claiming. The failure class at 8fa7d858c is not established: that job's log 403s
for this token and its annotations carry only "Process completed with exit code 1", so line cap again
and surviving mutants in an unexercised error branch are both consistent with what I can read. And a
lane's own gate line is the only thing that tells you which class its red is - read it before
assuming the lever applies.
