feat(chat): add prompt history picker to the chat input - #2155
A leading "!" or "!" in the chat input opens a picker with the prompts of the current task, newest first. A query after the trigger filters the list with fuzzy matching, for example !fix.
Selecting a row replaces the whole input with that prompt. It does not send the message, so the user can edit the text first. Escape closes the picker.
The picker does not open for an exclamation mark inside a message ("Great!", "if (!x)") or for a markdown image ("").
The input placeholder now shows "! for user history" between the command hint and the drag hint. All 18 locales carry the new chat:historyHint key.
The original idea is trying to impove the user experience when facing long turn messages. But after a research, turn rail (message minimap) is not a good idea for current solution.
Current valid solution is using arrows in chat box to find the history prompts ( It works, but not very user friendly.)
My solution is to add a '!' command just like '@ for context, / for commands', '!' can trigger user prompt history menu. (! is a famous command under linux for history, I think it is easily accepted)

Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: The PR title and description use Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100): short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): If a user would notice this change at a glance (layout, theme tokens, brand elements, empty/error states), I added or updated a *.visual.tsx snapshot in webview-ui/. See webview-ui/AGENTS.md → "When a UI change needs a snapshot".
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
Type ! or ! at the start of the chat input to browse and filter recent prompts, including the initial task prompt and user feedback. Select a prompt to replace the input without sending it.
Prompts appear newest-first, with duplicates removed. Press Escape to dismiss the picker, and find localized guidance in the input hint.
Bug Fixes
Enter and Tab retain their normal behavior when no history option is available. In edit mode, Escape dismisses an open picker before cancelling the edit.
Tests
Added coverage for prompt history, filtering, selection, keyboard behavior, dismissal, and edit-mode interactions.
A leading ! or ! opens a prompt-history picker. The picker filters and deduplicates history entries. Selecting an entry replaces the input without sending it. Prompt history includes the initial task prompt and user feedback prompts.
Changes: Prompt History Picker

Summary
Prompt history and option generation webview-ui/src/components/chat/hooks/usePromptHistory.ts, webview-ui/src/components/chat/hooks/__tests__/usePromptHistory.spec.tsx, webview-ui/src/utils/context-mentions.ts, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/context-mentions.spec.ts
The history hook includes a nonblank initial task prompt and user feedback prompts. Context-menu utilities recognize leading ! and ! triggers, filter and deduplicate history entries, preserve their input order, and return NoResults when no entries match.
Chat input and context-menu integration webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatTextArea.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/ContextMenu.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ChatTextArea.spec.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/chat.json
The chat input passes prompt history to the menu, replaces the input when a history entry is selected, and suppresses reopening after Escape for the dismissed text. Enter and Tab select only under the specified unmodified, non-composing conditions. The menu renders history entries, and locale files add the history hint. Component tests cover selection, dismissal, and keyboard handling.

Security Boundaries
No changed path shows a concrete security boundary violation. History filtering stays in the webview, React renders prompt text, and selecting a prompt only fills the input without sending it.
Persistence Integrity
The PR changes prompt-history display and in-memory input handling. usePromptHistory.ts derives history from existing messages; the changed code adds no persistence write or persisted default.

Explanation
The title "feat(chat): add prompt history picker to the chat input" matches the main change in the changeset. The changes add a ! or ! trigger that opens a prompt history picker in ChatTextArea, backed by new history logic in context-mentions.ts, ContextMenu.tsx, and usePromptHistory.ts. The title is short, specific, and follows a conventional commit style.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2106] requires a vertical turn rail (message minimap) beside the chat panel. The rail must show one marker per user-message and assistant-reply turn, show preview text on hover, jump the chat view to a turn on click, hide or disable for short chats, and provide a setting toggle. The whole-PR summary and the current description show none of these. The PR adds a prompt history picker in ChatTextArea.tsx and ContextMenu.tsx. Selecting a row copies a prior user prompt into the input. It does not navigate the chat view. The PR description states that the turn rail is not used. The usePromptHistory.ts change since the previous review adds the first task prompt to the recall list. It does not add any navigation or rail behavior. The new tests cover prompt recall and picker behavior, not turn navigation, markers, hover previews, short-chat handling, or a setting. The PR states 'Closes: #2106', but the requested behavior is absent.
Resolution
Implement the turn rail for #2106. Required work: one marker per user and assistant turn; hover preview text; click-to-jump to the target turn; hide or disable the rail for short chats; a setting to enable or disable the rail. Add automated tests for marker generation, hover preview, jump navigation, short-chat hiding, and the setting. Alternatively, remove 'Closes: #2106' and link this PR to a separate issue that requests prompt history recall.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The prompt history picker changes do not implement the turn rail requested by [#2106]. Changed areas include: ChatTextArea.tsx (trigger, selection, Escape, and key handling for the '!' picker); ContextMenu.tsx (history option type and rendering); context-mentions.ts (isHistoryTrigger, history options, fuzzy filtering); usePromptHistory.ts (task prompt added to the recall list); the historyHint key in 18 locale files; and the visual fixture and gallery story for the picker. These changes support a separate prompt recall feature. The PR description states that this feature replaces the turn rail. The changes provide no link to navigation of existing conversation turns. No supporting connection to #2106 appears in the evidence. The unchanged previous assessment conclusion remains valid for the current head.
Resolution
Move the prompt history picker and its supporting changes (ChatTextArea, ContextMenu, context-mentions, usePromptHistory, locale keys, visual fixture, and gallery story) to a PR linked to an issue that requests prompt history recall. Alternatively, update the linked issue to include this feature, with the owner's agreement. Keep #2106 scoped to the turn rail in this PR, or open a separate PR for the turn rail.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Dismissed-prefix suppression still lacks focused coverage. ChatTextArea.tsx:488,692-705 keeps the picker closed as dismissed text is extended. The Escape test does not extend the query, and the recalled-prefix test checks a row that would not match the extended query (ChatTextArea.spec.tsx:727-739,977-1008). The prior empty-history concern is addressed: lines 913-940 now assert that the picker is absent and Enter sends.
Resolution
Add a controlled component test that dismisses a matching query, extends it, and asserts that the picker remains absent. Then leave the dismissed prefix and verify that the picker can reopen.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed menu lifecycle leaves file-search timers active after dismissal. In ChatTextArea.tsx:481-493, Escape now closes an @ menu without clearing its pending timer. If a user types @old and presses Escape within 200 ms, the timer still sends searchFiles. The new history path also skips cancellation when @old is replaced with !@new (:692-714); the base code canceled the old timer and scheduled the new search. The timer still has no unmount cleanup.
Resolution
Clear and null the pending file-search timer when leaving or dismissing file search, including entry into the history picker. Clear it on unmount. Add tests for dismissal, the history transition, and unmount.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the feature, the trigger rules, the placeholder hint, and the test run (58 Vitest tests and manual testing). It includes the Visual Snapshots section with screenshots and a checked box for the visual snapshot. It also includes the Closes line and the checklist. Several template items are incomplete: the Documentation Impact box is unchecked and the Documentation Updates section is left without a selection. The Test Procedure section includes a Vitest command but does not give manual steps for reviewers. The Description section explains the reasoning but does not describe the implementation details the template asks for, such as the design choices and the trade-offs. The linked issue #2106 asks for a turn rail, and the description says the PR uses a different solution. The description does not explain why that change still closes the issue. The 'Get in Touch' field contains a name, not a Discord username.
Resolution
Please complete the following items. (1) Explain why this prompt history picker closes issue #2106, or change the Closes line, because the issue requests a turn rail. (2) Add manual test steps that reviewers can repeat, for example typing !, filtering with !fix, selecting a row, and pressing Escape. (3) Describe the key implementation details and trade-offs, such as the history source in usePromptHistory, the 100-entry limit, and the handling of Enter, Tab, and Escape. (4) Answer the Documentation Impact item by checking one of the two options in the Documentation Updates section. (5) Replace the name in the Get in Touch section with a Discord username.

Escape now closes the picker before it can cancel an edit, so the draft is kept. Enter still sends the message when no prompt matches the query instead of being swallowed. Fuzzy matches keep newest-first order instead of fzf's ranking.
Add component tests for the Escape precedence and the no-match send path, plus a gallery story with picker-open snapshots.

### When a UI change needs a snapshot
If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.

Commit the four history-picker snapshot baselines.
The visual test fails in dark, light, high-contrast, and high-contrast-light themes because each requested snapshot is absent. Generate and commit those baselines so the required visual test can pass and detect later changes. As per path instructions, “Visible webview changes require a durable Playwright component snapshot.”

Resolve the binary conflict in electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png by taking the upstream baseline. The merged UI needs a regenerated baseline because upstream added message timestamps while this branch extends the input hint.
Add or strengthen a focused test that fails under the mutation. If the mutant is equivalent, request maintainer approval for the narrowest mutator-specific exclusion and explain why it cannot change behavior:
// Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: normalized input cannot reach the alternate branch
const result = condition ? value : fallback

The stated concern is a product-intent question, not a demonstrated defect. The stated condition is inaccurate, and the remaining behavior matches the explicit dismissal design in the code.
The only behavior the code does not settle is whether appending text to a recalled prompt should keep the picker closed. The code's own comments define suppression as dismissal for the current text, and the PR does not say otherwise. No inspected source or contract shows that the current behavior breaks a requirement, loses data, or blocks a workflow. No change is established.

Add picker tests for Tab selection, in-picker arrow keys, empty history, and the ! trigger.
The picker block in this spec does not exercise four paths that the implementation handles:
Tab selection: isRowSelectKey commits a row on Tab (ChatTextArea.tsx:539-547). No test sends a Tab keydown.
Arrow keys with the picker open: no test in this block sends ArrowUp or ArrowDown while the picker is visible. The existing arrow-key tests run without the picker.
Empty history: the guard at ChatTextArea.tsx:698 keeps the picker closed when promptHistory.length === 0. No test types ! with empty history and asserts that Enter sends.
Full-width trigger: ! is tested only as a predicate in context-mentions.spec.ts:596-598. No ChatTextArea test types ! and checks that the picker opens.
Add one test for each path. Each test should assert the observable result: the selected row for Tab and arrow keys, and the sent message or closed picker for empty history.

@yarcowang Thanks for adding the tests. The Tab, ArrowDown, and full-width trigger tests cover the requested paths.
The empty-history test still needs a direct assertion that the picker is closed. At Line 931, Third prompt is absent from the fixture, so the assertion would also pass if the picker opened with a no-results option. Please assert that the picker itself is absent and keep the Enter assertion.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Replace the title attribute selector with a user-visible query.
The test locates the picker row with container.querySelector('[title="!dpl"]'). This selector depends on internal markup. A text or role query is more resilient and matches the project's testing conventions. Use screen.queryByText("!dpl"), or a role query, if the row exposes a role. Keep the textarea value in mind: queryByText does not match textarea value, so the query reads only picker rows.

Test mouse selection of a history row.
A regression in ContextMenu’s click dispatch can break mouse selection without failing the keyboard tests. Add a controlled-component test that clicks a row and checks the draft, picker dismissal, and onSend.
Suggested fix

In the ChatTextArea tests, add a controlled-component test that opens the
history picker, clicks a history row, and verifies the draft updates, the picker
dismisses, and onSend is not called. Use the existing history fixture and
render/query patterns in the surrounding tests to exercise mouse selection.

The empty-history test only checked prompt text that the fixture never contains, so it passed even if the picker opened on a "No results" row. Expose the menu root with a data-testid and assert on it directly.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
Implement the turn rail for #2106. Required work: one marker per user and
assistant turn; hover preview text; click-to-jump to the target turn; hide or
disable the rail for short chats; a setting to enable or disable the rail. Add
automated tests for marker generation, hover preview, jump navigation,
short-chat hiding, and the setting. Alternatively, remove 'Closes: #2106' and
link this PR to a separate issue that requests prompt history recall.
- Out of Scope Changes check:
Move the prompt history picker and its supporting changes (ChatTextArea,
ContextMenu, context-mentions, usePromptHistory, locale keys, visual fixture,
and gallery story) to a PR linked to an issue that requests prompt history
recall. Alternatively, update the linked issue to include this feature, with the
owner's agreement. Keep #2106 scoped to the turn rail in this PR, or open a
separate PR for the turn rail.
- Regression Evidence:
Add a controlled component test that dismisses a matching query, extends it, and
asserts that the picker remains absent. Then leave the dismissed prefix and
verify that the picker can reopen.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Clear and null the pending file-search timer when leaving or dismissing file
search, including entry into the history picker. Clear it on unmount. Add tests
for dismissal, the history transition, and unmount.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr

### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.

- Keep behavioral assertions in Vitest. A `*.visual.tsx` test should establish a deterministic state and make a focused screenshot assertion.

The picker does not open for an exclamation mark inside a message ("Great!", "if (!x)") or for a markdown image ("
").
The input placeholder now shows "! for user history" between the command hint and the drag hint. All 18 locales carry the new chat:historyHint key.

Closes: #2106
Description
The original idea is trying to impove the user experience when facing long turn messages. But after a research,
turn rail (message minimap)is not a good idea for current solution.Current valid solution is using arrows in chat box to find the history prompts ( It works, but not very user friendly.)
My solution is to add a '!' command just like '@ for context, / for commands', '!' can trigger user prompt history menu. (! is a famous command under linux for history, I think it is easily accepted)
