fix(task-persistence): delete under the canonical lock key (U9, #1375) - #1917
This PR makes the task-history delete path obey the same lock discipline as every writer: deleteMany() resolves each task id's file through the canonical lock key - so a symlink alias and its referent cannot delete and write in parallel - takes the per-path file lock before unlinking, and reports per-id failures honestly: failed ids stay in the cache and the store never reports a deletion it did not perform.
This is the last writer in the chain to join the lock discipline. It is the ninth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991), so merging it completes the series.

Closes: #2024 (this unit's tracking issue). Closes: #1375 (epic - the last unit of the chain; the epic closes when this lands).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking).
Description
What this PR changes:
TaskHistoryStore.deleteMany() resolves each id's file through the canonical key every other writer uses and takes the per-path file lock before unlinking.
Per-id failure accounting: a failed delete is recorded per id, the batch continues, failed ids stay in the cache, and the write-through is skipped when the whole batch failed.
Consistency ports this unit carries: the approved outside-workspace identity binding in guardedWrite (approvedCanonicalTarget, captured before the approval - the guard only compares against it, never against a lookup done at publish time), the workspace-root resolution fix (an unresolvable root is dropped from the allow-list instead of vetoing every write), and failed-batch assertions rewritten to state the contract instead of comparing a live map with itself.
Why the diff looks bigger than the change - per carried file, and why this unit requires it: the chain is non-cumulative: this branch is based on main, where none of the predecessors have landed yet, and the unit's own tests (the new TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts and the ClineProvider delete specs) compile and run against the whole src tree. Every carried file below is byte-identical to the owning unit's head content, is required for this branch to compile and for its own tests to execute, and disappears from this PR's diff when the predecessor merges (merge order: U1 -> U2 -> U3 -> U4 -> U5 -> U8 -> U6 -> U7 -> U9, all predecessors of this unit):

the unit's own delta: the delete path's lock discipline and honest per-id accounting.
deleteMany locks through the same canonical key guardedWrite takes - the unit's contract is stated against that guard's semantics, and the tree does not compile without it on main.

This unit's own delta is 308 a+d / 23 changed executable lines, all in TaskHistoryStore.ts and its spec.

Test Procedure
From the repository root, with dependencies installed:
Expected: the delete-path contract (every id reported, entries and files kept when the batch failed, the canonical key used for the lock) plus the reconciliation and concurrency suites.
Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.
Pre-Submission Checklist
Scope is one gate scope and matches the unit.
No .changeset or CHANGELOG changes (AGENTS.md).
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged - no suppression count increased.
New code lints clean (--max-warnings=0) rather than relying on suppressions.
Tests added at the lowest layer that would have caught each finding.
Every ported test re-measured in this unit's harness, with a negative control.
Visual Snapshot item considered: not applicable (no rendered surface).
Visual Snapshots
Not applicable - the delete-path locking is extension-host internal.
Videos (interaction / animation only)
Not applicable.
Documentation Updates
No user-facing documentation change: the delete path's locking is internal, there is no new setting or surface, and no model-facing text changed. No .changeset and no CHANGELOG edit (AGENTS.md).
Additional Notes
Budget: own delta 308 a+d / 23 changed executable lines - inside both caps. The mutation gate reports the GitHub diff's changed-line count (1407 against the 500 cap) because the unlanded predecessors inflate it; the row clears on rebase after the predecessors merge.
Negative controls measured in this harness: identity comparison dropped -> 2 failed; baseline taken from the post-approval lookup with the caller capture dropped -> 1 failed; missing capture accepted -> 1 failed; failure path evicting the cache and mtime maps -> 3 failed. All restores byte-identical.
taskFileMtimes is populated only by the reconcile path, so an un-reconciled store legitimately has an empty map there; the failed-batch test seeds it before asserting presence.
vitest core/tools + integrations/editor: 916 passed, 5 skipped, 2 failed - both failures donor-junction artifacts of the local harness (DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS resolves from a stale junctioned dist; CI test and compile are green at this head).
ESLint (the CI command, full src) exit 0; suppressions unchanged.
CI at this head: all required checks green; mutation-diff red on the budget-cap count described above (no surviving mutants in this unit's own lines).
Reviewer and maintainer questions are welcome as comments on this PR or on #1991.
Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Per AGENTS.md the two Stryker suppression comments in the guarded save
path were removed instead of kept; their equivalence claims:
writeKind default StringLiteral ("update" -> ""): an empty kind
dispatches exactly like "update" inside guardedWrite - only "edit"
and "create" branch distinctly - and the default-parameter line is
not part of this unit's changed-line selector, so the mutant is
equivalent / out of scope.
saveTask operand of the adoption-probe guard (LogicalOperator): GuardRejectedError is only thrown by guardedWrite, which is reached
only after the !saveTask check above has already thrown. Whenever
the operand is evaluated saveTask is provably non-null, so dropping
the operand cannot change which branch is taken.
mutation-diff remains advisory for stacked units; maintainers decide any
narrow gate-config exclusion.
Re-review responses (error-fix re-review wave)
Dangling leaf link (Major Security): the canonicalization walk now lstats the lexical leaf when realpath reports ENOENT and refuses
symbolic-link leaves (and unresolvable lstat failures) before authorizing
the write - the publish resolves the name again, so an unchecked referent
could receive the bytes outside the authorized container. Genuinely missing
leaves keep the existing create path. Regression test asserts the guard
rejects before the publish is reached.
The leaf-link refusal described in the previous round's section now
lands on this branch: the guarded write lstats the lexical leaf before
publishing and refuses a symbolic link that does not resolve, so the
publish can never follow a referent the check did not authorize. The
commit is byte-identical to the copy that first landed on the U7 branch;
negative control: removing the check reddens exactly the dangling-symlink
test. 67/67 green at this head.
Out of Scope Changes disposition (timing, not necessity). The row
lists predecessor-unit implementation (observation tracking, read
completeness, indentation clipping, DiffViewProvider teardown) that U9
does not require. Every PR in this chain targets main, so each diff
carries the open predecessor units until they merge; the declared merge
order places them all before this PR, after which this diff reduces to
the U9 deletion changes plus the minimal canonical-lock and
approved-identity support the issue requires. Nothing listed is
implemented here for the first time:

New Features
File reads now distinguish clipped lines from omitted lines.
File edits and writes detect changes since a file was read, with safeguards for partial reads.
JSON writes can be restricted to a specified directory.
Bug Fixes
File updates are published atomically while preserving existing permissions.
Writes through symlink aliases use consistent locking and update the resolved file.
Failed task-history deletions retain affected items while batch deletion continues for other items.
Rejected file edits no longer leave unintended changes in the editor buffer.
File-save failures clean up temporary files while preserving committed content when a post-save durability check fails.
Outside-workspace writes are checked against the approved target before publishing.
The PR adds task-scoped file observations and guarded writes for tools and editor saves. It updates text and JSON publication to use resolved targets and lock keys. Task-history deletion verifies removal, retains state for failures, and reports failed IDs in batch operations.
Changes: Observed file versions and guarded writes
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record file observations and completeness src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts, src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts, src/integrations/misc/indentation-reader.ts, related tests
Tasks hold independent observation registries. Reads record versions only when pre-read and post-read stats match. Observations are complete only for full, unclipped, lossless reads.
Apply version and workspace guards src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, related tests
The guard selects create, update, or edit rules; checks observations, versions, and workspace containment; serializes writes per path; and refreshes observations after publication.
Route tools and editor saves through guards src/core/tools/*Tool.ts, src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, related tests
File tools pass write intent and approved target identity. DiffViewProvider records preview observations, uses guarded publication, and coordinates cleanup and teardown.
Atomic text and JSON publication
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Stage and publish text files src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/*
safeWriteText resolves targets and lock keys, validates staging files, preserves target modes, and handles backups and post-commit durability outcomes.
Resolve and confine JSON publication src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson*
safeWriteJson publishes to resolved targets and checks confineTo. Recovery and deletion helpers acquire canonical lock keys.
Task-history deletion
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Delete task files and handle partial batches src/core/task-persistence/*, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, related tests
Deletion uses resolved locks and checks for recoverable leftovers before confirming absence. Failed IDs retain cache entries. The provider cleans artifacts for successfully deleted IDs and rethrows partial failures.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to e787e
Version checks and canonical locking improve write safety, but atomic replacement can weaken existing Windows file permissions. Permissions are restored only after publication, and restoration failures are ignored. In directories accessible to other accounts, a previously restricted file could become readable or writable by those accounts.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: New atomic text publication does not preserve Windows access restrictions throughout the transition. The replacement file is renamed into place before the original DACL is restored. Failed DACL capture skips restoration, and failed restoration is swallowed. If staging inherits broader permissions than the original target, other local or shared-directory principals can gain read or write access during this window; interruption or restoration failure can leave that exposure persistent despite a successful return. The merge-base direct-save path wrote the existing file without replacing its security descriptor.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The permission-drift concern reaches existing Windows files published through the shared text primitive, including approved direct tool edits. Its independently attackable scope is the affected files accessible to another principal under the replacement DACL; no remote, cross-tenant, or privilege-escalation reachability was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — For a target whose explicit DACL is narrower than its directory's inherited permissions, replacement can expose content before restoration. A principal newly permitted by that DACL can read or modify the file without controlling the tool request. Failed restoration can leave the broader access in place; the tests explicitly expect publication to succeed despite capture or restoration failure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The owning task's observation registry supplies publication authority. The guard rejects absent edit authority, checks cancellation before publication, and compares versions under a canonical advisory lock. Its documented atomicity guarantee applies to writers participating in that lock protocol, not arbitrary external filesystem writers.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Without a prior task observation, ApplyDiff can derive content from one read while the preview records a newer token. The guard can then accept earlier-derived content against that newer token. Existing observations prevent this substitution, and unobserved direct edits reject. The same inter-read overwrite exposure existed in the merge-base unguarded save flow, so it is a remaining limitation rather than an introduced concern.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make Windows permission preservation a pre-commit requirement: restrict staging before writing sensitive bytes, apply and verify the intended DACL before publication, and abort without replacing the original when that guarantee cannot be established.
proposed — Bind edit publication to the stat-matched read used to derive its content, rather than permitting a later preview read to supply that identity.

Explanation
The title names the delete path and the canonical lock key, which matches the main change in TaskHistoryStore.deleteMany. It is a conventional-commit style title. It omits the per-ID failure accounting, but the title does not need to cover every detail. The title is also specific enough for a teammate to see the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections (Related GitHub Issue, Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, and others) and links issues #2024 and #1375. It explains the delete-path change clearly and gives concrete test commands and results. It has gaps against the template. The description does not follow the template's Simplified Technical English guidance (it uses long sentences, dashes, and a dense table). The Pre-Submission Checklist marks items as done, including a claim that src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged, while the raw summary says that file changed by one count. The description also contains large amounts of chain-tracking and carried-file context that is not required by the template. The Test Procedure lists commands but leaves some results unverified in CI terms. Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes, with notes for the author.

Explanation
Directly linked issues: #2024 and #1375. Both apply. Neither is closed or contextual.
[#2024] Met on source evidence in the whole-PR summary at head 6093d2a:
deleteMany() resolves each id's file through the canonical lock key and takes the per-path lock before unlinking (removeTaskFile). The deleteSemantics spec covers locking resolved referents while unlinking alias paths.
Per-id accounting: one TaskHistoryDeleteError lists failed ids. The batch continues after a failure. Failed ids keep their cache and taskFileMtimes entries. onWrite runs only when at least one removal succeeded.
Approved outside-workspace identity: guardedWrite takes approvedCanonicalTarget, captured before approval by the callers, and rejects when the target no longer resolves to that identity. The publish body was not read line by line. This result rests on the summary and the documented contract.
[#1375] Not met by this PR delta. The PR still states "Closes: #1375" and says the epic closes on merge. Concrete unmet items:
Truncated tool-call arguments: no change in the summary rejects truncated arguments with an explicit error.
Default artificial write delays: writeDelayMs remains in the DiffViewProvider.saveChanges and saveDirectly signatures. No removal of the default delay is shown.
MCP settings initialization truncation (#1371) and abandoned-subtask reattachment (#1021): no change is shown.
Task-history lost-entry updates (#920): only the delete path is covered. No concurrent-update regression coverage beyond delete is shown.
Rollback-capable checkpoint and journal per successful write: no change is shown.
Partly met: guarded writes with version tokens (guardedWrite, ObservationRegistry), atomic publish (safeWriteText), and locked JSON writes (safeWriteJson). These are in the diff, but they do not cover the items above.
Uncertainty: absence claims rest on the diff summary. Existing behavior on main was not checked for the items above.
Result: #2024 is met. The #1375 closure is not supported.
Resolution
Choose one option and update the PR description to match:
(1) Change "Closes: #1375" to "Refs: #1375". Remove the statement that merging completes the epic. Assess this PR against #2024 only.
(2) Keep "Closes: #1375". Then add source changes and regression tests for truncated tool-call argument errors, removal of default write delays, #1371, #1021, the #920 concurrent-update cases, and the checkpoint and journal items. Alternatively, name the owning PRs or head commits that deliver each item and cite their evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff against merge base 73931fe contains changes that #2024 does not require. The PR calls them carried files from predecessor units U1 to U8. Each carried file is added in this PR's diff against main, so each counts as a change in this PR. The merge-order argument changes when the lines leave the diff. It does not show the lines are needed for #2024.
Required by #2024 (in scope): TaskHistoryStore.ts and its deleteSemantics spec; task-persistence/index.ts; ClineProvider.ts and its delete specs; resolveLockKey from safeWriteText.ts; the lock and recovery changes in jsonFileRecovery.ts; and the approvedCanonicalTarget binding in guardedWrite.ts with its tests.
Not required by #2024 (out of scope, as present in this diff):
observationRegistry.ts and its spec; the observationRegistry property in Task.ts and Task.dispose.test.ts.
ReadFileTool.ts and its spec: observation completeness, clipping reports, and stat-bracketed reads.
indentation-reader.ts and its specs: hasClippedLines.
DiffViewProvider.ts and its spec: guarded save path, placeholder cleanup, and teardown.
safeWriteText.ts beyond resolveLockKey, with its specs and integration spec.
safeWriteJson.ts, its specs, and the postCommitDurability spec: confinement and directory fsync.
The full guardedWrite.ts (FIFO queue, version tokens, createIfAbsent, replaceIfVersion) and its spec.
Tool wiring in ApplyDiffTool, ApplyPatchTool, EditFileTool, EditTool, SearchReplaceTool, and WriteToFileTool, with their specs.
The dangling-leaf refusal from re-review. It hardens leaf-symlink handling in the write path. #2024 requires the identity binding, not this refusal.
The two Stryker suppression comments removed from the guarded save path. The PR cites AGENTS.md, not #2024.
Checklist mismatch: the PR states src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged. The summary shows a count change from 96 to 94 for readFileTool.spec.ts.
The PR states that the carried files are needed for the tree to compile and for the delete-path tests to run. The PR does not name the import or test that fails without each listed file. This claim is not demonstrated.
The timing argument (predecessors not yet merged) does not remove these changes from this PR's diff.
Resolution
Rebase this branch after the U1 to U8 units merge into main. Then the diff must reduce to the delete-path files and the minimal canonical-lock and approved-identity support.
Until then, do one of the following:
Remove the observation-registry, ReadFileTool, indentation-reader, DiffViewProvider, safeWriteText (except resolveLockKey), safeWriteJson, guardedWrite (except the approvedCanonicalTarget binding), and tool-wiring changes, with their specs. Move them to their owning unit PRs.
Restore the two Stryker suppression comments, or move their removal to the owning unit.
Remove the dangling-leaf refusal from this PR, or show that #2024 requires it.
Correct the checklist entry for src/eslint-suppressions.json so it matches the 96 to 94 change, or remove that change.
For each carried file that must remain, cite the specific import or test that fails to compile without it.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The workspace allowlist bypass remains in the added src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:208-230 and src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:168-181,273-274,530. After the guard confirms that /workspace/sub/new.txt is absent, an actor who can modify /workspace can replace sub with a symlink to an outside directory. safeWriteText resolves the path again and can overwrite an existing outside new.txt. The advisory lock does not pin the directory. The guard tests mock safeWriteText (guardedWrite.spec.ts:39-42).
Resolution
Bind authorization and publication to the same filesystem target with directory handles and no-follow operations, or an equivalent atomic mechanism. Add a real-publisher regression test that swaps an ancestor after validation and verifies rejection or publication only to the authorized target.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Two changed deletion paths can lose persisted state. - TaskHistoryStore.ts:563–579 removes the referent's recovery backups but unlinks the named symlink. If an interrupted replacement left the only committed copy in a backup, deleting the alias destroys that copy. - TaskHistoryStore.ts:330–346, 390–434 releases the first file lock before calling deleteJsonFile. A separate store can publish between the two acquisitions, and the second deletion removes the new state. The store lock is per instance.
Resolution
Perform each deletion under one file-lock acquisition. Preserve or recover the referent's backups when deleting a symlink. Add regression tests for both scenarios.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The new under-lock confinement rejection lacks focused regression coverage. src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:251-267 rechecks the target after lock acquisition. The confinement tests use targets that do not change after locking. The under-lock rejection test in safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts:114-151 does not use confineTo.
Resolution
Add a utility-layer test that changes an in-scope target or symlink to an outside referent after lock acquisition. Assert ConfinedPathEscapeError, lock release, and no staging, backup, rename, or outside write.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The watcher leak remains. If disposal occurs while safeWriteText is pending, Task.disposeOnce() disposes the tracker and starts diff teardown. The new return at DiffViewProvider.ts:726-727 resolves normally, so EditTool.ts:238-249 continues to trackFileContext. FileContextTracker.ts:81-91 can then create a watcher after disposal, with no later cleanup. The provider test covers the return but not the tool caller or tracker.
Resolution
Return an explicit cancellation result and stop post-save work in all save callers. Make tracker disposal final, including for pending tracking operations. Add a regression test for disposal during publication.

Confirmed — this is the same defect as the other three fsync threads, not four separate ones.
The rollback in the catch ran whenever backup mode had renamed target -> backup, including when the failure happened after the commit rename had already published. PostCommitDurabilityError tells the caller the content is at the target path, but the catch had already renamed the backup back over that target, so the error message and the file disagreed.
Fixed in the unit that owns the publish path, #1910, commit 58f803ddb: a committed flag is set immediately after the commit rename and the rollback is skipped once it is set, so only a pre-commit failure can restore the backup.
Regression test at the lowest layer that would have failed (commit rename succeeds, post-commit directory open fails, backup mode on): fails without the guard, passes with it. This unit carries the same copy of safeWriteText.ts, so it inherits the fix once #1910 merges first in the chain order U1 -> U2 -> U3 -> U4 -> U5 -> U8 -> U6 -> U7 -> U9.
Not applicable at this head. Line 109 already reads const complete = prior?.complete === true && prior.version === preReadToken, so an internal read grants full-file authority only when a prior observation was complete and its version matches; otherwise it records false. No change needed.
Not applicable at this head. This unit does not remove || this.isPaused; it adds it. The diff is - if (this.userMessageContent.length > 0) -> + if (this.userMessageContent.length > 0 || this.isPaused), so a paused task does not fall through to the noToolsUsed() retry.

Accepted: that assertion is genuinely missing, and it is worth the line.
The case at :137-171 asserts the delete rejects (:167) and that both files survive (:168-169), but never that the item stayed in the cache - which is the half of the contract its own comment promises (:159-165: "an item whose file is still on disk stays in the cache instead of being contradicted by the next reconciliation").
Edit (not committed, not pushed - with the TaskHistoryStore changes for the Lead to land): in the it.each(["delete", "deleteMany"]) case, immediately after await expect(attempt).rejects.toThrow(TaskHistoryDeleteError) at line 167, add
Control: against the committed source the added line passes - 23 passed (src spec command, node v22.23.4). With a mutation that evicts anyway on a failed removal (this.cache.delete(taskId) on the failure path at TaskHistoryStore.ts:319), the case fails at line 167 with expected undefined to be 'blocked-cleanup' (6 failed | 17 passed), so the assertion catches the eviction it is there to prevent.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for the local edit and mutation check. The assertion covers both deletion methods.

Learning: In Zoo-Code PR #1726 at `edcf937e`, `src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts` uses `removeHistoryFile` for `delete` and `deleteMany`. After a lock or unlink error, `removeHistoryFile` checks the history file on disk. If the file is present, it propagates the error and the deletion does not evict the cache entry. If the file is absent, it treats the deletion as complete, even when lock acquisition failed.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
Four paths conflicted. The fork is real, not textual, so each one was resolved by
deciding which behaviour survives rather than by picking a side wholesale.
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts and its test: main carries the Zoo-Code-Org#1309 replacement protocol
inside this module - the interrupted-write recovery pass, the trace stage stream that
persistenceTrace and taskMessages consume, createTempFilePath, the best-effort flush,
the single-rename commit with its EPERM two-step fallback, and a rollback that keeps the
backup so a later writer can recover. Our side replaced that body with a delegation to
services/file-safety/safeWriteText, a module main does not have. Resolving to our side
would have deleted behaviour main shipped and mains own tests assert, so the protocol
stays and our path-safety layer is grafted onto it: resolvePublishTarget under the lock,
resolveLockKey for the advisory lock key, and confineTo with ConfinedPathEscapeError
checked before any mkdir side effect, again on the lock key, and again under the lock.
Staging and all four rename sites - commit, fallback backup, fallback commit, rollback -
name the same resolved publish target, so no half-graft can leave the staged file on one
canonicalisation and the commit on another. Mains recovery, trace, flush and fallback
tests are kept verbatim, and our confinement, publish-target and lock-key tests are kept
alongside them. The mode-parity assertion our chain added is preserved by copying the
targets mode onto the staged file before the rename, which is what the commit needs
because the rename publishes the staged inode.
Two of our test variants were dropped rather than ported, and the reason is that the
mechanism they describe no longer exists: both assumed a backup copy taken before the
commit, which the single-rename protocol never does. Their observable claims - target
content intact, no leftovers, original error surfaced - are covered by the kept test
"a failed commit keeps the previous content at the target and leaves no backup behind".
TaskHistoryStore: our delete semantics (removeTaskFile reports whether the file is really
gone, and delete and deleteMany throw TaskHistoryDeleteError otherwise) stay. Main's
resurrection guarantee was then moved inside them rather than left beside them: the sweep
of a task file's .bak_/.new_ siblings now runs under the same per-file lock as the unlink,
before it, in the order jsonFileRecovery.deleteJsonFile already used, and a sibling this
store cannot collect blocks the canonical unlink instead of leaving a backup next to a file
the delete claimed to remove - a later reader's recovery pass would resurrect content this
delete was meant to destroy. isReplacementLeftover is exported from jsonFileRecovery so the
two callers share one naming rule instead of duplicating it. Main's shared helper still runs
once more after our lock releases, to collect anything a peer created in that window. When
the guard fires, the canonical file and the backup both survive, which is main's guarantee,
and the delete is reported as failed, which is this branch's contract: an item whose file is
still on disk stays in the cache rather than being contradicted by the next reconciliation.
Main's two "preserves the canonical file if backup cleanup fails" cases therefore keep both
file assertions unchanged and gain the rejection the merged contract requires; that is the
only main case whose expectation moved, and it moved because this branch exists to make
delete report per-file verdicts instead of swallowing the failure.
DiffViewProvider.spec: mains makeTaskDouble helper stays and gains the two members our
guarded save reads - task.cwd and a real in-memory observation registry - so the
suites keep using the shared double instead of three divergent inline literals.
Flagged for the maintainer thread: whichever of these branches lands first puts a fourth
implementation of services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts into main (main has none; Zoo-Code-Org#1408
carries 1de2e57, Zoo-Code-Org#14057a59e9a, Zoo-Code-Org#19113846158, this branch 0ed4a19).
The naming and recovery contract between that module and jsonFileRecovery is open in Zoo-Code-Org#2350.
safeWriteJson also gained two things the merged protocol needed to keep its own promises:
the committed directory is fsynced best-effort after the commit rename (POSIX only, failures
logged and never fatal), and the cleanup of a staging file that the failed commit already
consumed no longer logs an ENOENT that says nothing. The post-commit durability spec was
rewritten against the mechanism that survived - failure injected on the staged write stream,
not on an open the merged protocol no longer performs - and the lock-key spec's expected call
order was corrected to the six calls this module actually issues now that no writer is
delegated to. One test mechanism moved for a reason that is worth recording: the injected cleanup failure in
"preserves the canonical file if backup cleanup fails" is pinned to the leftover's basename
rather than to the whole path, because the store re-derives the sibling path from its own
resolved and realpath'd directory, and on a Windows runner that spelling need not be
string-equal to the spelling the test created the file under. The basename of a leftover is
unique to the task file, so the injection still lands on exactly one unlink. That is what the
windows-latest leg needed: with the path-equality pin the injected EACCES never fired there,
the sweep succeeded, and delete resolved instead of reporting the blocked verdict.
The windows-latest leg failed a second time, in a different harness and for the same
underlying reason: safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts ran 12 failures, every one "expected
WRITE_COMPLETED to contain EXIT_AT_REPLACEMENT_RENAME", because the child identifies the
commit rename by comparing the rename destination to the target as text, and that
comparison does not agree with this graft on Windows.
Measured here on the pinned runtime: fs.realpath (the async call the writer uses) expands an
NTFS 8.3 short name - C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~1 resolves to
C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-repro, one inode 673102249:1125899919173473 - while
fs.realpathSync leaves the alias alone, and only fs.realpathSync.native expands it in the
synchronous family. On a runner whose temp directory is reported as an alias the writer
publishes under the long spelling while the parent process still holds the alias spelling, so
text equality misses the commit rename; on a developer box the two spellings agree and the
suite passes. The hook now identifies the commit rename the way Zoo-Code-Org#1911 already identifies its
interception point: equal dev+ino is the same file, and when the destination is not on disk
yet (the commit of a first write) it falls back to the identity of the containing directory
plus the basename. The claim is unchanged - kill the child at the commit rename, whatever
protocol the writer uses - and the injection is no longer spelling-dependent.
Reproduced rather than inferred: with TEMP pointed at the 8.3 alias the suite runs 12 failed
before this change and 12 passed after it; with TEMP at the long spelling it runs 12 passed
both times. Full misc shard after the change on pinned v22.23.4: 119 files passed and 1
skipped (120), 2184 passed | 17 skipped. tsc 0 errors, eslint 0 at --max-warnings=0, prettier
clean, suppressions unchanged at 265 files / 2868 entries.
The consequence is recorded rather than buried: a publish target whose spelling differs from
the path the caller handed in is a contract question, not a test question. This is the third
site in the series where spelling equality turned out to be the wrong comparison - TaskHistory
Store backup cleanup, this hook, and the Zoo-Code-Org#1911 commit matcher - and Zoo-Code-Org#2356 carries the
measurement and the routing.

Review-driven repairs landed on this round (threads at head e991674):
- guardedWrite.createIfAbsent: create the directory that would hold the lock before
acquiring it. proper-lockfile builds "<key>.lock" with a non-recursive mkdir, so a
create into a directory that does not exist failed with ENOENT at lock acquisition,
before the writer reached its own mkdir -p. Measured on the pinned runtime (22.23.4):
acquireFileLock on <tmp>/missing-a/missing-b/target.json -> ENOENT; resolveLockKey of
the same path returns a key inside the missing directory and fails the same way;
after mkdir -p of that directory the identical call acquires and releases.
- guardedWrite.replaceIfVersion: hoist the lock key and re-derive it from the bound
target under the lock, as createIfAbsent already did. A key computed before the lock
does not cover a target that was repointed while the call waited, so the version
comparison could pass against the new target and the rename overwrite a writer that
held the other lock.
- guardedWrite: verify the target inside the enqueued FIFO link, so ordering between
two writes to one path is submission order, not the order in which two verifications
happened to complete. The publish helpers verify again under the lock, so only the
timing of a refusal moves, never whether it is reported.
- guardedWrite: the dangling-link refusal no longer embeds an absolute ancestor path in
a model-visible message.
- safeWriteJson: run the interrupted-replacement recovery pass against the resolved
publish target instead of the lexical spelling. Leftover names are derived from the
publish target, so for a symlink whose referent lives elsewhere the backup sat beside
the referent while the scan searched the link directory, found nothing, and the write
published over orphaned newer content. Best-effort: a link with no referent falls back
to the named path (what was always scanned) and the strict resolution still decides.
- safeWriteText._copyTargetMode: fail closed when the staged file cannot reproduce the
target mode instead of logging and publishing a wider mode over a 0o600 file. A staged
mode that already matches is still allowed, so filesystems that ignore POSIX modes do
not lose the write.
- jsonFileRecovery.deleteJsonFile / recoverMissingJsonFile: lock on resolveLockKey, the
key safeWriteJson and TaskHistoryStore lock, while still operating on the named path.
Three writers of one file were taking three different locks.
Tests: three new cases in guardedWrite.spec.ts, each shown to fail without its
implementation change (control run against the pre-edit blob: 3 failed, 68 pre-existing
cases still green; with the changes 71 passed). Two resolution-order fixtures in
safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts record the extra in-lock resolution the recovery target
now needs; their claims (lock key is the referent, the strict rejection happens inside
the protected block so the lock is released) are unchanged, and both cases fail again
when the recovery-target hunk is folded back. One alias containment case now pins the
lock-key double to the canonical referent, the same line the other alias cases set.

…g#1917 review rows)
Three review rows on this PR (TaskHistoryStore.ts:457, :536 and the reviewer
follow-ups on both) were right that a refused delete reported the wrong stage. The
lock-failure verdict now:
- reports enumeration-failed when the sweep readdir itself fails, with its own reason,
instead of throwing the readdir error out from under the caller;
- checks whether <lockKey>.lock is still fresh before claiming a writer may hold it;
- treats a surviving isReplacementLeftover sibling (the kind recoverInterruptedReplacement
restores) as its own stage, because the file can still come back through recovery;
- re-lstats the named path after those checks, so a writer that published and released
between the first missing-file lstat and the lock-file check cannot be reported as
"gone"; only a path that is still absent yields deleted:true.
The ClineProvider Task History spec double gains an fs/promises.stat entry: the verdict
now consults <key>.lock, and the honest double for this fixture is "no lock file", so the
ladder walks on to the leftover scan and the reappearance re-check rather than dying on a
missing export. The case claim (the mutex serializes update and delete) is unchanged.
Tests: four new cases in TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts, plus a cache-retention
assertion in the backup-cleanup case. Controls, all on pinned node 22.23.4: committed
component plus the new spec = 4 failed / 23 passed (the four new cases, failing as
intended); with only the reappearance re-check removed = 1 failed / 26 passed, so that
branch is load-bearing and nothing else leans on it.
Gates at this commit: core 200 files, 4414 passed | 9 skipped, no failures; misc 119

eslint-suppressions.json unchanged at 265 files / 2868 entries. No Stryker directive

cap-class (the delta exceeds the 500-line cap), not a new directive.
Authored with abort-merge (the deletion-semantics change set and its controls); landed by
the Lead, who is the only writer on this branch.
The deletion-semantics changes the :457 and :536 threads asked for, plus both reviewer follow-ups (the .bak_ sibling case and the live-lock/reappearance safeguard), are on the branch at fb14da0. Nothing there was answered by argument alone: the lock-file freshness check, the leftover-sibling stage, the enumeration-failed stage and the reappearance re-check are implemented, with four cases in TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts and controls - committed component against the new spec gives 4 failed / 23 passed, and removing only the reappearance re-check gives 1 failed / 26 passed. The seventeen rows that were open without an answer at the previous census are answered in-thread by root comment id and resolved; the eight that stay open are the answered-and-open ones a reviewer needs to re-check, and I am not firing a review request on a bot-held PR - the next bot pass sees this head. Required legs were still running when the push landed; mutation-diff is the advisory cap class on this delta (1528 changed executable lines against a 500-line cap), not a code signal, and no Stryker directive was added.
…g#1917 review row :620)
The third follow-up on that row is right about the shape of the claim: a caller that
never held the lock cannot certify that nothing recoverable is sitting beside the file.
The verdict now certifies absence inside an acquisition instead of reasoning about the lock
from outside it.
- _verdictAfterLockFailure hands the ENOENT branch to _certifyAbsentUnderLock; the other
two branches, and the reason strings other suites assert on, are untouched.
- The <lockKey>.lock mtime read is gone: acquireFileLock already passes stale =
LOCK_STALE_MS to proper-lockfile (src/utils/fileLock.ts:34), so reading the same signal
twice answered nothing the acquisition does not answer better.
- Inside the acquisition, in order: lstat the named path (present means it came back),
readdir the containing directory (ENOENT means the directory that would hold the file is
gone), then look for an isReplacementLeftover sibling, which is the kind of artifact
recoverInterruptedReplacement restores. Released in finally, with a failed release
logged rather than reported over the verdict.
- A retry that cannot acquire reports blocked - the item is kept and the caller retries -
except when the lock directory itself is gone, which is the same answer the scan gives.
A stale lock does not wedge: proper-lockfile steals it under the same threshold, so a
moments-old lock blocks and a 40-second-old lock is taken and released.
The reappearance re-check stayed, for a reason narrower than the one it was written for:
under the lock it now catches a publish that completed while the delete was being refused
the lock - canonical file, no siblings, so the scan alone would call it deleted. Removing
only that return block reddens exactly one case.
The fs/promises.stat double added at fb14da0 is removed again: this version calls
fs.stat nowhere in the delete path, and a mock that answers a call which does not exist is
dead weight in a suite that is otherwise about mutex serialisation.
Tests and controls, pinned node 22.23.4. deleteSemantics alone 28 passed. With the
committed component and this spec, 1 failed / 27 passed - the failure is the reason string
only ("blocked on the lock" against "a writer may still hold the lock"), because the
keep-the-item verdict is the same either way, so that case pins the contract wording.
Removing only the reappearance return gives 1 failed / 27 passed, and the single redden is
the reappearance case.
Gates at this commit: core 200 files, 4416 passed | 9 skipped, exit 0, no failures; the

to: `TaskHistoryStore.ts` and its spec, `task-persistence/index.ts`,
`ClineProvider.ts` and its delete specs, and the minimal canonical-lock and
approved-identity support in `guardedWrite.ts` that #2024 requires. Until then,
remove the carried observation-registry, read-completeness, indentation-reader,
`DiffViewProvider`, `safeWriteText`, `safeWriteJson`, and tool-wiring changes

- Regression Evidence:
Add a utility-layer test that changes an in-scope target or symlink to an
outside referent after lock acquisition. Assert `ConfinedPathEscapeError`, lock
release, and no staging, backup, rename, or outside write.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind authorization and publication to the same filesystem target using directory
handles and no-follow operations, or an equivalent atomic mechanism. Add a
regression test that swaps an ancestor after validation and verifies that
publication is rejected or remains on the authorized target.
- Persistence Integrity:
Perform each deletion under one lock acquisition and remove the second deletion.
Preserve or recover referent backups when deleting a symlink. Add regression
tests for both scenarios.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Return an explicit cancellation result and stop post-save work in all save

Serialize deletion across alias retargeting.
If an alias changes from A to B while deletion waits for A’s lock, deletion can unlink it while a writer holds B’s lock. The writer can then recreate the history file after deletion succeeds. Make deletion and writes serialize across alias retargeting.

Accepted, and the window is the one this file already treats as dangerous elsewhere.
Measured at c4bd9a2: the key is derived before the wait - src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:427 lockKey = await this.lockKeyFor(filePath) - the call then waits on that key at :446, and the unlink inside the operation targets the named path at :483. Writers stage beside the resolved publish target, not beside the spelling they were given: src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:273-275 resolves the target and stages in path.dirname(targetPath). So a retarget while this call waits leaves the held lock keying a location the writer has moved away from, and the publish the row describes is a publish that this call's own lock no longer covers.
This codebase already refuses that shape in the guarded-write flow: src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:215-220 and :292-297 re-derive resolveLockKey(boundTarget) inside the acquisition and throw when the key moved. The delete flow does not have that step.
Answer is a change to come: re-derive the key from the named path after the acquisition and refuse the removal when it no longer matches, the same way the guarded writes refuse, rather than inventing a second lock over both spellings - a second lock would nest inside the one this flow already holds, and this file's own comments at :371-376 exist to keep two locks from nesting.
Row left open on purpose: the change is not on this head and rides as its own commit with three other rows here. No code changed for this answer.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for the detailed analysis. The proposed recheck would catch a lock key that changes while deletion waits.
It would not prevent an ancestor alias from changing after the recheck but before the unlink. Please cover both timings in the regression tests. The thread remains open while the change is pending.

Sweep named-path backups before unlinking the alias.
If history_item.json is an alias and a named-path backup remains, the locked sweep misses it. If the later cleanup fails, deletion still succeeds and reconciliation can restore the task. Sweep both the named path’s and referent’s leftovers before unlinking, and report cleanup failures.

Declined as proposed, for a reason I measured rather than assumed - and there is a separate residual I am not folding in here.
Where the leftovers actually are: a writer stages next to its resolved publish target - src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:273-275 - and the sweep in src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:447-480 runs over path.dirname(absoluteFilePath) where absoluteFilePath is the lock key produced by resolveLockKey, i.e. the target's canonical directory, with the pattern taken from the target's basename (src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:85-92). So the sweep is aimed at the directory and spelling the writer actually used. For it to miss a leftover named after the alias spelling, the spelling would have to have changed mid-life: nothing in this repo creates a task-file symlink (the only fs.symlink( outside tests at this head is src/services/skills/SkillsManager.ts:807, a directory link for skills), so that leftover is a relic of a file that used to be regular.
That relic is not unswept either: the follow-up deleteJsonFile(filePath) at :379-386 sweeps the named spelling's directory under the named spelling's basename - src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:100-121 resolves lexically with path.resolve and scans dirname of that - which is the alias directory and alias basename the row wants covered. Adding a named-spelling sweep inside the locked sweep would sweep a directory the writer never used, under a second lock inside the one this flow holds.
What the row does land on, said as its own matter rather than smuggled into this sweep: the follow-up's failure is swallowed. :382-386 logs anything that is not ENOENT and continues, so a backup this collection could not remove leaves the delete reported as successful and a later recovery can restore it - the helper rethrows that failure (src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:117-119), the caller is what discards it. Whether to unswallow it is a decision of its own, and I am asking for it rather than making it.
No code changed for this answer, and nothing here is on this head.

@easonLiangWorldedtech I accept your decision not to add the proposed sweep. deleteJsonFile does scan the named path’s directory for leftovers.
I recommend reporting incomplete cleanup as a per-ID failure. If a named-path backup remains, recoverMissingJsonFile can restore it. The callers currently catch the cleanup error after evicting the cache entry.
Re-throwing from the existing catch is not sufficient. The alias has already been unlinked, and the second lock acquisition can delete a peer’s intervening write. The deletion flow also needs to preserve recoverable referent backups when it unlinks an alias.
For both delete and deleteMany, I recommend regression tests for cleanup failure, an intervening peer write, and an interrupted replacement behind an alias. No tests were run for this reply.

Named follow-up, so the residual of this row is not carried only inside my answer above.
What survives my decline is a different defect from the sweep this row asked for, and it is smaller and closer to home: the follow-up cleanup under the released lock swallows its own failure. In src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:379-386 the follow-up deleteJsonFile(filePath) call logs anything whose errno is not ENOENT and continues; the helper it calls rethrows exactly that case - src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:115-119 refuses to swallow a non-ENOENT failure while unlinking a leftover - so the collection that could not remove a backup reports the task as deleted, and a later recovery run can restore what this delete claimed was gone. The delete's own return value and the write-through that follows it both treat it as done.
That is a decision about what a delete is allowed to report, not about which directory to sweep, so it wants its own row-group rather than a widening of the sweep here. Recorded here at the Lead's instruction; the change is scheduled as its own commit and nothing in this head carries it.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Understood. The cleanup failure will be handled separately from the proposed sweep. No fix is on this head, so the finding remains open.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted as test strength. Not edited: stack owner's lane.
The third stub at src/core/tools/tests/guardedWrite.spec.ts:845 resolves v1, so the retry after the failed refresh finds the version it expects and publishes: the case proves only the publish-succeeded-then-vanished path (:850-851), and it does so with two publications, which is why the count assertion cannot be reused as evidence about a rejected retry.
The variant the row asks for is a third stub returning v2 or rejecting ENOENT, asserting the rejection kind, that the observation still carries v1, and that publication ran once. Worth adding because the guard's documented behaviour in that situation is to fail closed, and today that behaviour is asserted nowhere in this file. Note this restates an earlier ask on the same case in this PR, so it wants one answer and one commit, not two.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@easonLiangWorldedtech Agreed. The current retry returns v1 and publishes again, so it does not test rejection after a failed refresh.
This is the same finding as the earlier request. One change can address both comments. I’ll leave this thread open for the stack owner.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted: the normalization exists one step later than the failure can arrive. Not edited: stack owner's lane.
The version step is normalized: an ENOENT out of computeVersionToken becomes the guard's deleted-after-read verdict with the re-read-then-retry remediation at src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:302-313. The acquisition is not: :281 calls withFileLock with no mapping around it, and the lock is built by mkdir of <key>.lock, so when the observed file's parent directory is gone the acquisition answers ENOENT and that raw errno is what the caller receives. Same condition, two contracts - one gets a remediation it can act on, the other gets an errno.
The shape is to map an ENOENT from the acquisition onto the same deleted-after-read verdict while leaving the other lock outcomes alone: EEXIST and a timeout both mean a writer is standing, and turning those into "deleted after it was read" would be a worse lie than the errno. Worth noting for whoever fixes it that the create guard does not share this exposure - it pre-creates the directory at :202 - so the fix belongs to the update/edit path and its test, not to a shared helper.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted as a coverage gap. Not edited: stack owner's lane, and it is a test ask.
src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:518-520 is a one-line delegation to realpathNearest, and the tolerance for a missing target is entirely inside that helper (src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:168-183: realpath, then ENOENT-with-not-a-link falls back to the lexical path, a dangling link is refused, and an EEXIST loop retries once). That fallback-and-refuse distinction is the contract, and no acceptance case pins it for a target whose parents are missing: the create cases in src/core/tools/tests/guardedWrite.spec.ts run on stubbed filesystem calls (the nested-parent case at :1297-1302 stubs mkdir, stat and the lock), so the identity the approval binds to is never produced by the real resolver.
The two cases worth adding are the ones the row names - a missing nested target under an ordinary parent and the same under a symlinked parent - asserting the identity canonicalizeForApproval returns and the target the guarded write then publishes to. It pairs with the row on that spec case at :1302; same fixture, same window, and they should be one commit.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted - and the strongest evidence is that this repository already fixed the same mismatch in one of its two callers. Not edited: stack owner's lane.
The mismatch, measured: recoverMissingJsonFile resolves lexically (src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:37, path.resolve(filePath), which does not follow a link), takes the lock on the canonical key at :59 (resolveLockKey), and then hands the lexical path to recoverInterruptedReplacement at :63. That helper scans path.dirname of the path it was given (jsonFileRecovery.ts:145-146) and renames onto it (:208). A writer stages beside its resolved publish target (src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:273-275), so the leftovers the recovery is looking for live in the referent's directory under the referent's basename - a directory this recovery never reads and never heals, while holding the one lock that does cover it. Right lock, wrong directory.
The proof this is not hypothetical is inside this PR: src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:236-242 resolves the publish target before recovering for exactly this reason and says so in the comment above it. The reader-recovery path is the caller that has not been brought into line, which is why the row is quick-win rather than a redesign.
The change the row asks for is the one to make, with one caution to whoever writes it: healing at the referent must happen under the same canonical lock this function already takes, and the dangling-link case still has to fall back to the named spelling, because a link with no referent is not something the referent scan can read.
@easonLiangWorldedtech Thank you. The initial scan also needs to find referent-side backups; otherwise, it can return before taking the lock.
One caution about the fallback: if an interrupted replacement moved the referent to a backup, the symlink is dangling even though its target path can still be read from the link. Falling back only to the named path would miss that backup. The existing safeWriteJson fallback has the same limitation.
Please cover that case when the stack owner makes the change: restore the referent-side backup under the canonical lock and preserve the symlink. The finding remains open.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted. The sequence the row describes survives the current fallback. Not edited: stack owner's lane.
Measured: the recovery target is resolved inside the acquisition at src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:236-241, and any failure of resolvePublishTarget falls back to the alias path - the catch does not distinguish "this name is a link with no referent" from "this name cannot be read". A dangling alias is precisely what an interrupted referent backup leaves: the referent was moved to its backup, so the link now points at a path that is not there, resolvePublishTarget refuses it (src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:168-183), and the recovery then scans the alias directory (src/utils/jsonFileRecovery.ts:145-146) where no backup was ever written, because writers stage beside the referent (safeWriteText.ts:273-275). The backup survives, the file does not, and a later write to the alias meets the dangling-link rejection at the validation step with nothing to heal it.
The row's ask - recover the referent under the lock before applying the rejection, and only fall back when the referent scan finds nothing - is the shape. It is also the same fix as the reader-recovery row, seen from the writer's side: the two callers disagree about which directory holds the bytes, and one rule for both is what removes the class rather than patching the second caller again.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for verifying. I agree the fallback can leave the referent backup unrecovered. The finding remains open because the code has not changed.
The shared recovery path should validate the referent and confinement before recovery under the canonical lock. It should retain the dangling-link rejection when no backup can be recovered. A regression test should cover the interrupted EPERM replacement through an alias.

Verified against c4bd9a2 and accepted. The helper already treats the neighbouring failure the strict way, which is what makes this branch the inconsistent one. Not edited: stack owner's lane.
Measured: in _copyTargetMode (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:447-458) a target stat that answers anything other than ENOENT or ENOTDIR is logged at :455 and then falls through the return at :457, so publication proceeds with the staged file's own mode. Eleven lines later the chmod branch refuses to do that: a mode that could not be reproduced is re-read and the publish is rejected unless the mode matches anyway (:459 onward), on the stated ground that widening who may read a 0o600 file is not cosmetic. An EACCES or EIO on the stat is the same widening, arriving one step earlier and reported as success.
Two things that make the fix small and worth saying with it: the helper has a single definition at this head (:447, called once at :300), so there is no second copy to align - I checked for one before writing this - and keeping ENOENT and ENOTDIR as "absent target, nothing to copy" is required, because that is the create path and refusing there would block every first write.

Half accepted, half declined, and the difference is which implementation the assertion has to survive.
What the case already proves, measured: only withFileLock is stubbed (mocked to reject once at :360-362); the certification's acquisition is the real acquireFileLock called inside _certifyAbsentUnderLock (src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:591), and the named-path lstat and the directory scan run after it and before its release in the finally at :646-649. The delete cannot reach the follow-up deleteJsonFile unless the certification returned deleted: true, because :321-323 throws first. So the aged lock directory can only have been removed by the certification's own acquire-and-release, and the ENOENT assertion at :371 is not vacuous against the code as written.
What it cannot prove is what the row is really after: it cannot distinguish the shipped order from a variant that stole the lock, released it, and then scanned. That variant does not exist in this file today, and no assertion in this case would catch it appearing. Proving the order needs a probe inside the acquisition - an lstat/readdir spy asserted while a flag set by the held acquisition is still true - which is a different kind of test from the one this case is.
So: accepted as test strength for a shape the code does not have, declined as a claim that the current assertion is fooled by the current code. It rides with the other two spec rows here as one test-only commit if the ordering probe is wanted; nothing changed for this answer and nothing here is on this head.
@easonLiangWorldedtech You’re right. The current implementation acquires the certification lock before lstat and readdir, and releases it afterward. My comment was imprecise if it implied otherwise.
The remaining gap is that the final lockDir assertion does not verify that ordering. An in-flight probe would be useful to catch a future early-release regression. If you include it in the test-only commit, I can verify it then.

Carried here at the Lead's request; measured on the vps2-f #1913 lane, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node 25.9.0).
mutation-diff on #1913 went failure -> success by merging main, and back to failure on the next commit:
e62f198ce, before merging main: failure, check-run 125486348227, workflow run 41506292261. Gate
line as recorded there: "Mutation gate failed: extension has 589 changed executable lines (limit
500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion."
e3d632799, four commits after merging main 73931fe8: success, check-run 128619142516, workflow
run 42444051212.
8fa7d858c, ~14 new executable lines later: failure, check-run 128620716380, workflow run 42444581569.
The mechanism is visible in the PR's own delta: +5188/-161 against the old base, +5153/-39 against 73931fe8. Merging main shrinks the changed-executable-line count, so on a cap-class red it is the
cheapest lever available on this series - and the gain is not durable, as the third row above shows.
Two things I am not claiming. The failure class at 8fa7d858c is not established: that job's log 403s
for this token and its annotations carry only "Process completed with exit code 1", so line cap again
and surviving mutants in an unexercised error branch are both consistent with what I can read. And a
lane's own gate line is the only thing that tells you which class its red is - read it before
assuming the lever applies.
…by its last attempt
Zoo-Code-Org#1917 row 4504887166 (src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:397 at c4bd9a2).
deleteMany kept an append-only list of failures and reported every entry, so a batch in
which an id is handed over twice reported an id whose later attempt had already removed the
file. Duplicates are reachable without any caller doing anything wrong: the descendant walk
in ClineProvider.deleteTaskWithId (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2886-2905) recurses
through childIds with no visited set, so a child listed under two parents, or a cycle in
childIds, pushes the same id more than once. The caller then treats every reported id as not
removed (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2927-2937 runs removeTaskArtifacts only for ids
outside the failed set), so a task whose file this batch deleted kept its directory and its
checkpoint repository.
The batch is now keyed by id: one entry per id, a failed attempt overwrites the entry, and a
later attempt that finds the file gone clears it. What the report means is therefore 'ids
whose last attempt in this batch did not remove the file', which is what its caller acts on.
Duplicate input is still legal and still attempted - the second attempt is the one that
proves the file is gone - so the dedupe lives in the report rather than in the caller's walk.
Two cases in TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts: a duplicate id whose first attempt
fails at the lock and whose second completes the removal (the batch resolves, the file is
gone, one write-through), and a duplicate id whose attempts are both blocked by a live lock
(one id named once). With the component reverted to c4bd9a2 the first fails as a rejected
promise and the second reports ['dup-failed', 'dup-failed']. Measured on the pinned runtime

…resolves to
Zoo-Code-Org#1917 rows 4504887169 (:445), 4504928705 (:599) and 4504928712 (:629) at c4bd9a2. These are
three views of one rule: a removal may only certify what it did against the spelling the write
actually resolves to, which is the Zoo-Code-Org#2356 identity contract (resolve the publish target, lock
that key, and re-derive it once the lock is held) applied here rather than a new design.
:445 - the key is derived before this call enters the queue for it, and the sweep and the unlink
inside the callback then act on a name whose target another writer's lock covers when a rename
or a re-linked referent moves the spelling in the meantime. The callback now re-derives the key
from the name it was asked to remove and refuses with a new retargeted outcome when it no longer
matches, which is what src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts:215-220 already does for a write.
:599 - when the certification's own retry cannot create the lock because a directory on the way
is gone, the old code returned a completed deletion from that errno. The errno describes the lock
and the absence it leaned on was observed outside any lock: a writer can publish onto the name
in that gap, and it publishes onto the spelling it resolves to. The named path is now asked again
- lstat does not follow a symlink, which keeps a dangling alias reporting itself present - and
its answer is the verdict, fail-closed when the read itself fails.
:629 - the certification scanned only path.dirname(filePath) for interrupted-write leftovers.
safeWriteText stages its temp file and its old-content copy beside the target it resolves to and
names them after that target's basename (src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:273-275), so
for an alias the recoverable siblings sit in the key's directory and carry the referent's
basename: the single lookup certified "nothing recoverable beside it" about a directory no
writer used, and the deletion dropped a copy jsonFileRecovery could have restored. The scan now
reads both spellings' directories, each against the spelling whose basename its leftovers are
named after, and treats only a directory that is gone as holding nothing.
Three cases in TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts: a name that retargets between the key
and the callback (unlink never runs, item kept), a publish that lands on the name while the
directory on the way to the lock disappears (item kept, file still on disk), and an interrupted
write's copy that sits beside the referent rather than beside the alias (item kept, copy intact).
With the component reverted to c6962e3 exactly those three fail and the other 30 pass; the
component was restored byte-for-byte afterwards. Measured on the pinned runtime v22.23.4: 33
passed (33) in the focused spec, prettier clean, eslint clean on both files.
Zoo-Code-Org#1917 row 4504887171 (src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:459 at c4bd9a2).
The sweep under the lock reads the directory of the lock key, which is the directory the name
resolves to, and the ENOENT branch returned "absent" from that read alone. The directory's
answer and the name's answer are different questions when the name is an alias: the directory
a name resolves to can disappear while the name the caller passed is still on disk, and
reporting a deletion there evicts a served item whose file the next read still finds.
The branch now asks the named path the way _verdictAfterLockFailure already does (the same
file's :555 in this head): lstat does not follow a symlink, so the name reports itself rather
than the directory it was resolved through. Present gives a new named-present outcome, another
errno gives named-uncheckable with the stage named, and only an ENOENT from the name itself
closes the deletion as absent. Both new outcomes reach the caller as not-deleted, because no
observation in this removal says the file went away.
Two cases in TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts: the sweep directory gone with the named
file still on disk (name asked, item kept, unlink never called with it), and the sweep directory
gone with the name unreadable (reason names this read, item kept). With the component reverted
to ae4cfcb exactly those two fail - the old branch reports the deletion complete - and the
other 33 pass; the component was restored byte-for-byte afterwards. Measured on the pinned
runtime v22.23.4: 35 passed (35) in the focused spec, tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json clean, eslint
--max-warnings=0 clean on both touched files, prettier clean, eslint-suppressions unchanged at
265 files / 2868 entries.
… writes it
Zoo-Code-Org#1917 rows 4504889852 (:239) and 4504928701 (:368) at c4bd9a2. Test-only.
Both cases compared a snapshot of taskFileMtimes taken before the delete against the map after
it. taskFileMtimes.set appears once in TaskHistoryStore - in reconcile (its :834 in this head),
which is the external-change detection path - and neither case ran it, so the map was empty in
both: the readdir-failure case asserted has(id) against a snapshot that had never been true,
and the stale-lock certification case asserted the entry was evicted by a map that never held
it. Both comparisons were false against false, which is why a change that stopped evicting the
mtime record would have passed them.
Each case now runs store.reconcile() while the task file is present - reconcile is the only
writer of that map and it does not write through, so onWrite stays untouched - and asserts that
the seeding took hold before the delete is attempted. The existing comparisons then say what
they were meant to say: a failed delete leaves the seeded record, a certified delete evicts it.
Measured on the pinned runtime v22.23.4. Removing the reconcile() calls makes both cases fail
with 'expected false to be true'. Removing the eviction this test now depends on
(TaskHistoryStore.ts:334, the delete path's taskFileMtimes.delete) makes the stale-lock case
fail with 'expected true to be false'; the component was restored byte-for-byte afterwards. 35
passed (35) in the focused spec, tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json clean, eslint --max-warnings=0
clean, prettier clean, eslint-suppressions unchanged at 265 files / 2868 entries.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
getTaskFilePath is awaited outside removeTaskFile's error handling. If storage-path resolution rejects, deleteMany aborts instead of recording that ID's failure and attempting the remaining IDs.
The caller receives an unstructured error, later IDs are not attempted, and the provider's TaskHistoryDeleteError-based partial cleanup is bypassed.
This can occur when: getStorageBasePath rejects during one removal, potentially after earlier IDs have already been deleted.

Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases.
The revalidation inside the locked removal was an unguarded call, and
withFileLock rethrows an operation error unchanged, so a resolveLockKey
failure after the lock was taken landed in the lock catch and came back
as a lock that could not be taken although the acquisition had succeeded.
The directory read in the same callback already returns its verdict rather
than throwing for exactly this reason; the revalidation had not been given
the same treatment, and the two stages were indistinguishable in the
report.
Reporting only. The removal still refuses, the item still stays in the
store, and only the named stage differs: a reason that reports a failed
acquisition while the lock is held is a wrong statement about the world,
not a different outcome.
Verification at this change (node v22.23.4):
- focused deleteSemantics spec: 36 passed (36), including the new case that
drives a realpath failure only after the acquisition and asserts the
reason names the re-derivation and not the acquisition
- negative control: production file restored byte-for-byte from
adb8187 with the new case kept - 1 failed | 35 passed; the file was
written back and compared equal afterwards, no stash used

…h spellings
The asymmetry this closes: the removal path re-derives the lock key inside the lock
it already holds and refuses a mismatch (the revalidation in removeTaskFile, lines
478-480 of adb8187), while the certification path - the retry that turns an
observation of absence made outside the lock into a verdict - never re-derived it.
It acquired the key computed before the first attempt and trusted that key for the
whole scan. A name that retargets in that window leaves the retry holding the key of
a location the writer has moved away from: the lstat and the sibling scans read
directories no writer is using, and a publish onto the new target lands after the
deletion has been reported and the item evicted. Stating the rule on the removal
side only is what let the other half drift; both paths now ask the name under the
lock they hold.
The scan guard moves from comparing directories to comparing spellings. Recovery
copies are named after the target basename, so an alias that links to a differently
named file in its own directory - where the directories match and only the basenames
differ - got one scan against the alias basename, found nothing recoverable,
certified the deletion, and left a copy that a later recovery pass restores over a
task the store had already reported gone. Two scans now run whenever the two
spellings differ, and collapse into one only when both spellings name the same file.
Verification at this change (node v22.23.4):
- focused deleteSemantics spec: 38 passed (38), including a same-directory alias
beside a referent-named .bak_ copy, and a name that moves from A to B between the
refused acquisition and the retry that holds the A key
- negative control: production file restored byte-for-byte from 25e4fb8 with both
new cases kept - 2 failed | 36 passed; written back and compared equal afterwards,
no stash used
- eslint --max-warnings=0 on both files: clean; eslint-suppressions.json unchanged
- tsc --noEmit -p src/tsconfig.json: clean; prettier --check: clean
Answers the certification rows on PR 1917: the lock key that was never re-derived
under the retry lock, and the scan that missed a referent-named leftover standing
beside the name it was asked about.
…er a removal
A batch can attempt one id twice, and the last attempt decides the report. When the
first attempt removed the file and a peer republished it before the second attempt,
the second attempt evicted the served entry, recorded the failure, and then wrote
through and threw a TaskHistoryDeleteError naming that same id - so the payload sent
to state, the cache, and the error each omitted the task the error told the caller to
keep, and the promise that a failed id stays in the store was contradicted by the
batch that made it.
Each successful attempt now snapshots what it evicts - the entry and the mtime record -
and a later attempt of that id that fails puts both back before the write-through and
the throw. Nothing else about the batch changes: the same ids are reported, the same
single write-through runs, and an id whose last attempt succeeded is still reported
as deleted with its entry gone.
Verification at this change (node v22.23.4):
- focused deleteSemantics spec: 39 passed (39), including a batch of one id twice where
the peer republishes between the attempts and the second attempt cannot take the
lock: the id is named once, the file and the served entry are both back, and the one
write-through payload contains the id the error names
- task-persistence directory: 13 files, 237 passed (237)
- negative control: production file restored byte-for-byte from bc352ea with the new
case kept - 1 failed (expected false to be true) | 38 passed; written back and
compared equal afterwards, no stash used
- eslint --max-warnings=0 on both files: clean; eslint-suppressions.json unchanged
- tsc --noEmit -p src/tsconfig.json: clean; prettier --check: clean

the held lock
AssertionError: expected undefined to be an instance of TaskHistoryDeleteError
Test Files 1 failed | 199 passed (200) :: Tests 1 failed | 4426 passed | 9 skipped
The case forced its realpath failure by matching the directory the name was built from.
On that runner the temp directory's canonical spelling and the spelling the path was built
from are not the same string - the file resolves to the canonical one - so the predicate
never matched inside the lock, the re-derivation succeeded, and the delete resolved: the
case was green locally by testing the spelling of one machine.
The injection now marks the locked operation itself and refuses the first realpath made
inside it, which is the re-derivation and nothing else in that operation, and it names no
path spelling at all; the case asserts that the refusal happened, so a run that never
reached the re-derivation cannot pass by doing nothing. The same-directory alias case gets
the same treatment from the other side: its store is built on the canonical spelling of the
temp directory, so the unrelated difference between two directory spellings cannot hand the
scan its second pass, and only a different basename beside the name can produce one.
Verification at this change (node v22.23.4):
- negative control with the production file taken byte-for-byte from adb8187 and all
four new cases kept: 4 failed | 35 passed - the re-derivation case, both certification
cases and the duplicate-id restore each fail without their fix; file written back and
compared equal afterwards, no stash used
- focused deleteSemantics spec: 39 passed (39)
- eslint --max-warnings=0 on the file: clean; prettier --check: clean; no production file

Reject certification when the retry uses an obsolete key.
If an ancestor alias moves and the old lock directory disappears, the retry can report success without checking the new location. If cleanup cannot acquire the new lock, a later reconciliation can restore its backup. Revalidate the key before certifying deletion on this path.

Review comment at @src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts at line 773:
Revalidate the lock key in the retry path around resolveLockKey before
certifying deletion. If the key has changed since the operation began, do not
report success based on the obsolete lock; ensure deletion is confirmed under
the current key before certification.

This one is already the behaviour at the head, so no change from me: the certification re-derivation you are asking for is bc352ea07, and it sits on exactly this path.
At 6093d2a07: the retry asks the name again under the lock it already holds (TaskHistoryStore.ts:782), refuses when the answer does not resolve (:783-789, with the reason naming the re-derivation failure and carrying its error code) and refuses when the answer is a different key (:790-796). All of that runs before the named-path lstat and the backup reads at :797+, so the retry cannot report success from directories the writer has left. The comment at :774-779 records why this half needed the same rule the removal path already had.
Pinned by tests, not just by reading: refuses the certification when the name retargets while its retry lock is held (__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.ts:779), names the re-derivation when the lock key cannot be resolved under the held lock (:274), and the removal-side counterpart refuses the removal when the name retargets while its lock is being taken (:725).
On the second half of the row: because the refusal happens before the cleanup reads, this path declares nothing deleted and leaves the entry in the store, so the reconciliation you mention is working on a retained entry - which is the state the store promised - rather than recovering a backup of something this deletion had already called gone.

…d success
deleteMany() snapshots what each successful attempt serves away so that a later
attempt of the same id that fails can put back exactly what was there rather
than what a recovery pass would guess. That write was unconditional, and a
duplicate id can succeed more than once: the second success finds nothing left
in the cache to serve, so it stored an empty snapshot over the one holding the
entry and its mtime. A third attempt that then could not take the lock reported
the id as failed - which the batch's contract reads as retained - while the
cache and the write-through payload both omitted it. That is the same split
between the report and the state the restore path exists to close, reached by
an overwrite instead of by a missing restore.
Only an attempt that actually served something may replace the snapshot, so a
confirm-absence success leaves a held entry and mtime alone.
Test: keeps the served entry through a second successful attempt of the same id
- three attempts on one id (a removal, a removal of a republished copy, a refused
lock) asserted against the entry and mtime the store served before any of them.
With TaskHistoryStore.ts at 0fae602 and the test kept, it fails with
"expected false to be true" on cache membership; the earlier duplicate-id test
passes with and without this change, so it pins what the fix must not disturb.
The duplicate-id restore test asserted membership: that the cache holds the id,
that an mtime record exists beside it, and that the write-through payload
mentions the id. A restoration that rebuilt the entry with different metadata, or
wrote back a zero mtime, satisfied every one of those.
Capture the entry and the mtime this store serves before the batch runs - as a
copy, because the restoration hands back the very object a plain capture would
have aliased - and compare the restored entry, the restored mtime and the whole
published payload against them. The three-attempt test beside it gets the same
treatment.
Control: with the restore site changed to write a mutated prompt and a zeroed
mtime, both tests fail - 2 failed | 38 passed, each on the deep equality of the
restored entry - and both pass at 60f9c8c, so this pins what the restore must
preserve without changing what it does. Spec-only: no production line moved in
this commit.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
Choose one option and update the PR description to match:
(1) Change "Closes: #1375" to "Refs: #1375". Remove the statement that merging
completes the epic. Assess this PR against #2024 only.
(2) Keep "Closes: #1375". Then add source changes and regression tests for
truncated tool-call argument errors, removal of default write delays, #1371,
#1021, the #920 concurrent-update cases, and the checkpoint and journal items.
Alternatively, name the owning PRs or head commits that deliver each item and
cite their evidence.
- Out of Scope Changes check:
Rebase this branch after the U1 to U8 units merge into main. Then the diff must
reduce to the delete-path files and the minimal canonical-lock and
approved-identity support.
Until then, do one of the following:
- Remove the observation-registry, ReadFileTool, indentation-reader,
DiffViewProvider, safeWriteText (except resolveLockKey), safeWriteJson,
guardedWrite (except the approvedCanonicalTarget binding), and tool-wiring
changes, with their specs. Move them to their owning unit PRs.
- Restore the two Stryker suppression comments, or move their removal to the
owning unit.
- Remove the dangling-leaf refusal from this PR, or show that #2024 requires it.
- Correct the checklist entry for src/eslint-suppressions.json so it matches the
96 to 94 change, or remove that change.
- For each carried file that must remain, cite the specific import or test that
fails to compile without it.
- Regression Evidence:
Add a utility-layer test that changes an in-scope target or symlink to an
outside referent after lock acquisition. Assert `ConfinedPathEscapeError`, lock
release, and no staging, backup, rename, or outside write.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind authorization and publication to the same filesystem target with directory
handles and no-follow operations, or an equivalent atomic mechanism. Add a
real-publisher regression test that swaps an ancestor after validation and
verifies rejection or publication only to the authorized target.
- Persistence Integrity:
Perform each deletion under one file-lock acquisition. Preserve or recover the
referent's backups when deleting a symlink. Add regression tests for both
scenarios.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Return an explicit cancellation result and stop post-save work in all save
callers. Make tracker disposal final, including for pending tracking operations.
Add a regression test for disposal during publication.

Additional context used
Path-based instructions: 4
Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases.
Check roster at posting time (37 checks): everything green except mutation-diff — advisory class, not a ruleset merge gate (same extension-overage family as the rest of this chain; CI measures vs the PR merge-base). mergeable = true; mergeable_state = blocked reflects the required human approvals, not any author-side pending work. This unit's tests and typecheck legs are green on both platform legs.
Plainly: nothing is pending from the author side on this head. What remains is a human approving review, including at least one code owner.
The mutation line on this branch, measured at five bases
The mutation-diff leg on this PR stops at the size cap the gate applies before it runs any test: extension has 1765 changed executable lines (limit 500). Below is that line re-measured at four other bases, so the choice about what to do with it rests on numbers rather than on the one message the leg prints. This is a local measurement, not a hosted result: it calls the gate's own selector functions - parseNameStatus, parseChangedLines and executableChangedLines from scripts/stryker-diff.mjs - in the order selectFromGit calls them, on this PR's head 6093d2a07cb2f05f9120f2d42fe0f238558dec63, in a worktree checked out at that head. The comparison bases are the pushed heads of the branches named.
Measured against
Changed executable lines in extension
Against the 500 limit
Files that dominate the count
upstream main73931fe8be - what the leg computes today
Two of those numbers are the whole question. Once the task-history delete unit (fork PR 70) and the provider batch-delete unit (fork PR 71) are subtracted, the line drops from 1765 to 1129 - and guardedWrite.ts at 401 plus DiffViewProvider.ts at 338 are 739 of what remains. Neither file is touched by either of those two units: they are the content PRs 1929 and 1930 carry. And all three lanes branch from main independently - git rev-list --left-right --count against this head reads 75/106 for 25a1ad65f, 53/106 for 89c1bd8f7, 19/106 for b15f32df3 - so no branch available today already contains both files, and no base available today puts this PR under the cap. Restacking this branch onto the furthest-along of them is a real reduction with an over-cap result attached to it.
So the ask is the one the gate's own message frames - either land 1929 and 1930 ahead of this unit, so that its line describes its own content instead of the chain's, or a maintainer grants the narrow reviewed exclusion the message names. Both are maintainer calls, not author trims: nothing has been cut from this PR to chase the number, and no claim of equivalent or unreachable code is being made for the surviving lines.
What this comment does not say. It does not report a hosted run: the numbers above are computed locally with the gate's functions, and the mutation-diff leg is advisory rather than a required context, so this PR's merge blocker remains the code-owner approval, not this line. Nothing was pushed to this branch in making it, its head is where it was, and nothing on any review thread of this PR was resolved by it. The restack this line depends on is recorded as owed on the split-plan issue, with the replay and conflict evidence attached there so it does not have to be derived twice.

This PR makes the task-history delete path obey the same lock discipline as every writer:
deleteMany()resolves each task id's file through the canonical lock key - so a symlink alias and its referent cannot delete and write in parallel - takes the per-path file lock before unlinking, and reports per-id failures honestly: failed ids stay in the cache and the store never reports a deletion it did not perform. This is the last writer in the chain to join the lock discipline. It is the ninth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991), so merging it completes the series.

Description
What this PR changes:
TaskHistoryStore.deleteMany()resolves each id's file through the canonical key every other writer uses and takes the per-path file lock before unlinking.guardedWrite(approvedCanonicalTarget, captured before the approval - the guard only compares against it, never against a lookup done at publish time), the workspace-root resolution fix (an unresolvable root is dropped from the allow-list instead of vetoing every write), and failed-batch assertions rewritten to state the contract instead of comparing a live map with itself. Why the diff looks bigger than the change - per carried file, and why this unit requires it: the chain is non-cumulative: this branch is based on
main, where none of the predecessors have landed yet, and the unit's own tests (the newTaskHistoryStore.deleteSemantics.spec.tsand theClineProviderdelete specs) compile and run against the wholesrctree. Every carried file below is byte-identical to the owning unit's head content, is required for this branch to compile and for its own tests to execute, and disappears from this PR's diff when the predecessor merges (merge order: U1 -> U2 -> U3 -> U4 -> U5 -> U8 -> U6 -> U7 -> U9, all predecessors of this unit):TaskHistoryStore.ts, its new spec,task-persistence/index.ts,ClineProvider.ts+ the two ClineProvider specsguardedWrite.ts+guardedWrite.spec.ts, the tool-wiring files (ApplyDiffTool,ApplyPatchTool,EditFileTool,EditTool,SearchReplaceTool,WriteToFileTool+ specs)deleteManylocks through the same canonical keyguardedWritetakes - the unit's contract is stated against that guard's semantics, and the tree does not compile without it onmain.observationRegistry.ts+ spec,ReadFileTool+ spec,Task.ts+ dispose testDiffViewProvider.ts+ spec,indentation-reader+ specssafeWriteText.ts+ specssafeWriteJson.ts+ specseslint-suppressions.jsonThis unit's own delta is 308 a+d / 23 changed executable lines, all in

Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Per AGENTS.md the two Stryker suppression comments in the guarded save
path were removed instead of kept; their equivalence claims:
"update"->""): an empty kinddispatches exactly like
"update"inside guardedWrite - only"edit"and
"create"branch distinctly - and the default-parameter line isnot part of this unit's changed-line selector, so the mutant is
equivalent / out of scope.
GuardRejectedErroris only thrown by guardedWrite, which is reachedonly after the
!saveTaskcheck above has already thrown. Wheneverthe operand is evaluated
saveTaskis provably non-null, so droppingthe operand cannot change which branch is taken.
mutation-diff remains advisory for stacked units; maintainers decide any
narrow gate-config exclusion.
Re-review responses (error-fix re-review wave)
lstats the lexical leaf whenrealpathreports ENOENT and refusessymbolic-link leaves (and unresolvable lstat failures) before authorizing
the write - the publish resolves the name again, so an unchecked referent
could receive the bytes outside the authorized container. Genuinely missing
leaves keep the existing create path. Regression test asserts the guard
rejects before the publish is reached.
Dangling-leaf refusal on this branch (3a5ebbb)
The leaf-link refusal described in the previous round's section now
lands on this branch: the guarded write lstats the lexical leaf before
publishing and refuses a symbolic link that does not resolve, so the
publish can never follow a referent the check did not authorize. The
commit is byte-identical to the copy that first landed on the U7 branch;
negative control: removing the check reddens exactly the dangling-symlink
test. 67/67 green at this head.
Out of Scope Changes disposition (timing, not necessity). The row
lists predecessor-unit implementation (observation tracking, read
completeness, indentation clipping,
DiffViewProviderteardown) that U9does not require. Every PR in this chain targets
main, so each diffcarries the open predecessor units until they merge; the declared merge
order places them all before this PR, after which this diff reduces to
the U9 deletion changes plus the minimal canonical-lock and
approved-identity support the issue requires. Nothing listed is
implemented here for the first time:
DiffViewProviderteardownSecurity Boundaries disposition (already-registered family). The row
repeats the TOCTOU ancestor-swap claim already dispositioned and
registered: the fix lands once at the publish-primitive owner and copies
(record 6106959976 on issue 1408; tracking 1991).
