feat(api): abort signal support for openai, openai-compatible base, zai, kimi-code (round 2) - #1311
Closes#404 — the OpenAI-compatible cancellation objective, for the OpenAI provider family implemented in this PR (openai, base-openai-compatible-provider and its inheritors, zai, kimi-code).
This PR covers only the OpenAI-family portion of the broader provider sweep; the remaining scope lands via sibling PRs in this series:
Round 2 of the abort-signal series: wires request-cancellation signals through the OpenAI family of providers.
openai.ts: all five client.chat.completions.create sites (createMessage streaming + non-streaming, O3-family streaming + non-streaming, completePrompt) build their request config through RequestConfigBuilder, adopted from the start of this PR — the Azure AI Inference path option and the abort signal compose in one builder (setOption("path", ...) + setAbortSignal). Every catch now normalizes abort failures to the Task.ts contract shape (name === "AbortError", message ending in aborted) via an abort-aware handleOpenAIRequestError, while non-abort errors keep the existing provider-prefix wrap. Both streaming loops (the main createMessage path and the O3-family handleStreamResponse) gain the loop-defense contract: a top-of-loop break stops processing buffered chunks that arrived after the caller's abort, and a post-loop check surfaces the Task.ts abort contract when the stream would otherwise end normally on an already-aborted signal.
base-openai-compatible-provider.ts: the shared createMessage / createStream / completePrompt path adopted RequestConfigBuilder for signal forwarding and gains the exported abort-aware error helper handleOpenAIRequestError (reused by zai.ts). Subclasses that do not override these methods (fireworks, sambanova, baseten) inherit the wiring, including the streaming loop's top-of-loop break and post-loop abort check.
zai.ts: audit finding fixed — the GLM thinking path in createStream no longer drops requestOptions; the thinking path and the glm-5.3 completePrompt path forward a merged signal (external signal + timeoutMs via mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout).
kimi-code.ts: completePrompt no longer drops CompletePromptOptions — options are forwarded on both the initial call and the 401 OAuth retry. createMessage inherits the openai.ts wiring via metadata passthrough.
Design notes:
CompletePromptOptions is not assignable to ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata (required taskId) — gap G7 — so completePrompt paths use setOption("signal", mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...)) instead of setAbortSignal(metadata).
Gap G5 (zero timeout must mean "no explicit timeout"): mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout treats timeoutMs <= 0 as no timeout internally, so a timeoutMs: 0 call site passes no signal rather than a timeout that would abort immediately.
The OpenAI SDK v5 RequestOptions type does not satisfy the builder's RequestConfigOptionsBase constraint (its headers/signal shapes differ), so each provider declares a minimal local OpenAiRequestConfig shape as the builder generic parameter.
Each call builds a fresh request-local config (no class-field abort controller), and the per-entry-point throwIfAborted guard rejects before any network I/O when the signal is already aborted.
This branch is STACKED on #1288: the foundation commit e61feb13e (generic RequestConfigBuilder, mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, mergeAbortSignals, throwIfAborted) rides inside by design.
Test Procedure
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run api/providers/__tests__/openai.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/base-openai-compatible-provider.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/zai.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/kimi-code.spec.ts — all green. New per-provider "abort signal wiring" suites cover: signal identity at every create site (including Azure path composition), signal + timeout merging, the timeoutMs: 0 guard, pre-aborted rejection before any request, SDK APIUserAbortError and fetch-level AbortError normalization to the Task.ts contract shape, and non-abort provider-prefix wrap regression. Deferred-chunk kill tests (2 in openai.spec.ts incl. the O3-family path, 1 in the base spec) prove the loop defense structurally: the second chunk is released only after the abort, so the top-of-loop break is the only thing that prevents the leak (asserted via a leaked collection), and captureError proves the post-loop check rejects with the contract message rather than a normal stream end.
100% changed-line coverage for the four provider files, measured with vitest run <specs> --coverage (v8/lcov) and cross-referenced against the git diff added lines.
pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit — exit 0.
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <changed files> — zero warnings; one stale suppression entry pruned (kimi-code.spec.ts @typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any 1 -> 0, the spec rewrite removed the only as-any cast); no suppression count increased.
Pre-Submission Checklist
Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (abort-signal wiring for the OpenAI provider family only; the four providers and their specs).
Self-Review: I have performed a thorough self-review of my code.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): N/A — no UI changes.
Documentation Impact: I have considered if my changes require documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
align check (zdt, unit = this PR's provider set): the 4 streaming-loop ERRORs on this unit's own loops (openai.ts + base-openai-compatible-provider.ts: missing top-of-loop check / missing post-loop check) are cleared by the loop defense above. Residual ERRORs on nanogpt.ts are main-side drift, not this unit: the file is byte-identical to upstream/main (introduced by main fix(nanogpt): preserve optional tool parameters #1590 after this branch's fork point) and is outside the unit's scope. The 8 other series units share the same loop-defense gap; series-wide application is a separate maintainer decision.
split contract / verify (zdt, kind=new, design-issue [BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404): no duplicate symbols, no foreign content. The only violation is budget-hard (1859 a+d vs the 1000 cap) — pre-existing unit scope already accepted through prior review cycles; re-splitting would re-cut already-merged round-1 units.
mutation preflight (local Stryker on the unit delta): 185 valid / 184 killed / 1 timeout / 0 survived / 0 noCoverage. The single timeout is the zai.ts setOption("signal", ...) StringLiteral mutant, a known flake class (the mutant drops the signal, so the abort test can only fail through the vitest timeout).
Additional Notes
Part of the abort-signal series (round 2). Builds on #674, #901, #1008, and #1288. Addresses #404.
In-scope justification for the two non-#404-looking items
Root package.json devDependency vitest 4.1.11: mutation-gate infrastructure — the changed-code mutation gate (Stryker via zdt) must resolve a vitest binary at the repository root to run this PR's gate (commit 0703c58), and the 4.1.11 pin is the CI dependency-review advisory bump (commit 4238bd1). It is the mechanism by which this PR's [BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 changes are gate-verified, not a functional change.
MiniMax base_resp re-typing: the hunk is inside this PR's new abort-aware streaming loop in base-openai-compatible-provider.ts — the same change adds the top-of-loop if (signal?.aborted) break defense and the try wrapper that normalizes abort errors raised during stream iteration ([BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 round 2, commits 393b516 and 35c95ea). The previous chunk as any read was re-typed with an unknown guard in that restructure; behavior is preserved (same status_code/status_msg semantics and error message shape), covered by the base_resp stream-error path test (commit 217f120).
Updated 2026-10-11 (head 6e46bc78c)
Merged current upstream/main (995167eed) (merge commit 6e46bc78c), clearing the has-conflicts state.
One conflict resolved:base-openai-compatible-provider.spec.ts — main prettier-collapsed the custom-model assertion to one line; this branch extends it to pin the two-argument create(body, requestConfig) call shape (the abort wiring's contract). The two-argument assertion is kept (it doesn't fit one line, so main's reformat doesn't apply to it).
Verification at this head: affected provider/fetcher/util specs 512/514 passed — the 2 failures are strict: truedefault-path cases and are a local-environment artifact: this worktree's @roo-code/types resolves through a junction to a donor tree that predates the strict-tool-schemas export, so DEFAULT_OPEN_AI_STRICT_TOOL_SCHEMAS is undefined at runtime there. The full strict-schema suite (8 tests) passes on a fresh-install worktree against the same main merge, and the merged production strict path is byte-identical to main's. ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on the resolved file; tsc shows only stale-donor missing-export artifacts (0 merge-caused errors in touched files); Prettier clean; src/eslint-suppressions.json strictly below main (this PR removes one entry and lowers one count). No new as any, no changeset/CHANGELOG files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13)
Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. Main's model-cache redesign (handler.fetchModels(options, signal) + getModelCacheScope) superseded this branch's signal threading through the modelCache fetcher-dispatch switch, so fetchers/modelCache.ts and its spec took main's versions wholesale — the kimi signal forwarding the branch's two modelCache spec tests pinned now lives at the fetcher level (fetchers/kimi-code.spec.ts) and at the call site (options.signal feeds the pre-abort fast-fail). In kimi-code.ts both sides' imports were merged and the discovery call site combined: main's handler argument plus the branch's options.signal.
Verification at this head: 512/512 green across the eleven touched specs; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)
Discovery cancellation no longer consumes the single attempt: the catch in prepareRequest resets modelDiscoveryAttempted only for cancellations (isRequestAborted against the caller's signal), so a later request on the same handler retries discovery instead of keeping fallback metadata; ordinary discovery failures keep the one-attempt behavior.
New test aborts during getModels and asserts a second request rediscovers (negative control verified; order-independent fetch stub).
Verification at this head: 25/25 green in kimi-code.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Registered evidence for the pre-merge Linked-Issues check at head 7f085ab:
createMessage hands the caller's metadata.abortSignal to the inherited OpenAI SDK request as chat.completions.create(params, { signal }) — the SDK passes RequestOptions.signal straight to fetch, so a cancellation aborts the in-flight HTTP request at the transport level, not merely stream consumption. Pinned by the test "forwards the metadata abort signal to the inherited OpenAI SDK request", which asserts the SDK call receives the exact caller signal instance.
completePrompt passes mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options.abortSignal, options.timeoutMs) as the SDK request's signal (RequestConfigBuilder .setOption("signal", ...) in the shared OpenAI wiring), pinned by "forwards completePrompt abort options and timeoutMs through the override on both 401 retry attempts".
Pre-flight guards (throwIfAborted before token/discovery work and before the SDK call, plus the post-prepare re-check) ensure a cancelled request never issues a POST — pinned by "rejects before any request when the createMessage abort signal is already aborted" and "stops before the completion request when the signal aborts during model preparation".
Post-loop abort defenses reject any content that raced the cancellation with the contract AbortError (name === "AbortError").
Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Five directives removed (base-openai-compatible-provider.ts 3, openai.ts 2):
ConditionalExpression,LogicalOperator on the baseResp object guard: equivalent for all JSON-reachable baseResponse values (only null/object/number/string/boolean reach it; each mutant agrees with the original on every one).
ConditionalExpression on baseRespStatusCode !== 0: a truthy statusCode is necessarily !== 0, so deleting the check cannot change the branch outcome.
ConditionalExpression,EqualityOperator on the tool_calls guard: with an empty activeToolCallIds the guard is the only bail; the mutants keep identical behavior for the covered finish reasons.
LogicalOperator (&& -> ||) on the strict-tool-schemas option read (x2): an unset option makes && yield undefined, which the parameter default in convertToolsForOpenAI turns back into the same strict value as ?? - equivalent.
Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.
Fractional-timeout rounding wave
Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).
Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)
The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).
Pre-merge checks: Kimi discovery cancellation (6088f40)
Linked Issues error fixed: KimiCodeHandler.fetchModels now forwards cancellation (explicit model-cache signal, else options.signal) to getKimiCodeModels, so cancellation during handler-driven discovery aborts the in-flight discovery HTTP request (Issue #404). Regression Evidence warning fixed: the discovery-retry test asserts getModels receives the caller signal, and rejected-Promise request-creation cases (mockRejectedValueOnce(new APIUserAbortError())) added for the awaited create() paths in base-openai-compatible-provider and zai - the sync-throw-only tests passed even with the await removed. Negative controls: reverting the forwarding, dropping the signal, and removing each await each fail exactly one test.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup warning (optional per CR): the discovery half is fixed above; the OAuth-refresh half (threading the signal through resolveAccessToken -> kimiCodeOAuthManager -> refreshKimiCodeAccessToken -> postForm) lives in src/integrations/kimi-code/oauth.ts, outside this unit's diff - registered as a follow-up for the OAuth owner.
Updated 2026-10-22 (head fb2b47870)
Merged current upstream/main (05d01f33d), clearing has-conflicts.
Local proof on the refreshed head: ESLint clean on the changed files, tsc --noEmit clean, vitest run over 11 provider/base/test-utils specs → 523/523 pass.
…ssion tests
Add a fast-fail throwIfAborted guard to the shared abort-signal utilities and regression tests for the CompletePromptOptions interface (added by Zoo-Code-Org#901).
…ai, kimi-code (round 2)
Round 2 of the abort-signal series: wires request-cancellation signals
through the OpenAI family of providers (addresses Zoo-Code-Org#404).
- openai.ts: all five client.chat.completions.create sites (createMessage
streaming + non-streaming, O3-family streaming + non-streaming,
completePrompt) build their request config through RequestConfigBuilder;
the Azure AI Inference path option and the abort signal compose in one
builder (setOption("path", ...) + setAbortSignal). Every catch normalizes
abort failures to the Task.ts contract shape (name === "AbortError",
message ending in "aborted") via an abort-aware handleOpenAIRequestError;
non-abort errors keep the existing provider-prefix wrap.
- base-openai-compatible-provider.ts: the shared createMessage /
createStream / completePrompt path adopts RequestConfigBuilder for signal
forwarding and gains the exported abort-aware error helper
handleOpenAIRequestError (reused by zai.ts); subclasses that do not
override these methods inherit the wiring.
- zai.ts: audit finding fixed - the GLM thinking path in createStream no
longer drops requestOptions; the thinking path and the glm-5.3
completePrompt path forward a merged signal (external signal + timeoutMs
via mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout).
- kimi-code.ts: completePrompt no longer drops CompletePromptOptions -
options are forwarded on both the initial call and the 401 OAuth retry.
- Design notes: CompletePromptOptions is not ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata
(required taskId, gap G7), so completePrompt paths use
setOption("signal", mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...)) instead of
setAbortSignal(metadata); gap G5 - mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout treats
timeoutMs <= 0 as no explicit timeout. Each call builds a fresh
request-local config (no class-field abort controller) with a
per-entry-point throwIfAborted guard that rejects before any network I/O.
- eslint-suppressions.json: one stale suppression entry pruned
(kimi-code.spec.ts @typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any 1 -> 0 - the spec
rewrite removed the only as-any cast); no suppression count increased.

(generic RequestConfigBuilder, mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout,
mergeAbortSignals, throwIfAborted) rides inside by design.

Bug Fixes
OpenAI-compatible, OpenAI, Z.ai, and Kimi Code requests handle cancellation more consistently before requests begin and during streaming.
Timeouts are distinguished from cancellations, with provider-specific error messages and consistent timeout limits.
Streaming responses handle incomplete chunks more safely, retain usage metrics, and report MiniMax errors more clearly.
Kimi Code model discovery supports cancellation and can be retried after cancellation.
Kimi Code prompt completions honor timeout and cancellation options, including during OAuth retries.
Cancelling a Kimi Code token refresh leaves saved credentials unchanged; shared refreshes continue for other callers and stop when all callers cancel.
Provider requests now forward abort signals and applicable timeouts, normalize abort and timeout errors, and stop stream processing after cancellation. Kimi Code model discovery and OAuth refresh accept cancellation signals. Tests cover stream chunks, usage retention, tool-call events, and cancellation behavior.

A shared handler classifies OpenAI request errors as provider-specific abort or timeout errors. Abort errors can retain a cause. Timeout conversion uses shared validation and conversion helpers. The captureError helper captures rejected operations for tests.
Streaming and completion requests forward abort and timeout options. Streams stop after cancellation. MiniMax base_resp values use guarded handling. Tests cover usage retention, malformed chunks, and tool-call events.
Thinking-model streams and GLM-5.3 completions forward request options. Tests cover abort normalization, timeout handling, and SDK request arguments.

Model discovery and provider requests accept cancellation signals. Kimi Code checks cancellation around discovery and OAuth retries and forwards completion options to both attempts.
Kimi Code OAuth refresh src/integrations/kimi-code/oauth.ts, src/integrations/kimi-code/__tests__/oauth.spec.ts
OAuth refresh accepts abort signals and shares an in-progress refresh among callers. Each caller can cancel its wait, and the shared request aborts when no waiters remain.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b7e16
Cancellation support still has gaps: canceled output can escape, received usage can be lost, and OAuth cancellation can stop working before response consumption finishes. Resolve these issues before merging; positive per-request timeouts are now forwarded correctly.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to cd525
Cancellation controls improve without a demonstrated expansion of access or credential privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns cancellation during stalled responses and retries, plus inconsistent error handling in an inherited provider.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected change affects outgoing requests and returned stream content for configured provider accounts. Cancellation remains request-local; the inspected paths do not introduce a new identity selector or credential privilege.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Task cancellation authority is maintained independently of provider error names: abortTask sets cancellation state synchronously and deduplicates teardown; request construction and automatic retry paths check that state.
observed — The unchanged Kimi OAuth manager shares one refresh promise and uses credential-generation checks around secret-store updates. Clearing credentials advances the generation and waits for an active refresh, providing counterevidence against cancellation forwarding introducing an unguarded credential-restoration transition.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Signal forwarding and loop guards improve cancellation containment, but source-level guards alone do not prove prompt settlement or response-body release when an iterator pull remains pending. Runtime cleanup and concurrent Kimi request isolation remain coverage gaps, not established vulnerabilities.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate cancellation against the real transport with delayed response bodies, pending iterator pulls, cleanup observation, and cancellation during OAuth preparation. Include native AbortError timeout classification and inherited request-creation overrides in contract validation.

Explanation
The title names the main change: abort signal support for the OpenAI provider family (openai, the OpenAI-compatible base, zai, and kimi-code). The diff matches this scope: the provider files forward abort signals to SDK requests, normalize abort errors, and add tests for these paths. The title also contains the term "(round 2)", which tells reviewers this is a follow-up series item but does not describe the change. The title is 92 characters, which is slightly longer than the short-title guidance in the repository template.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links the issue (Closes #404), explains the implementation in the Description section, gives a detailed Test Procedure, and completes the Pre-Submission Checklist. It also covers Documentation Updates and Additional Notes. Several parts are longer or more internal than the template asks for, including gate evidence, mutation-testing details, and stacked-branch notes. Some update sections describe rebases and review follow-ups, not the final state of the change. The description also contains sentences with contractions and passive constructions, which the template's writing-style rule asks authors to avoid. Mainly, the description is mostly complete, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The only directly linked issue, #404, is closed and completed. Under the assessment rules it supplies background only. Its problem statement and expected outcome are not active coding requirements for this PR, and the PR description's 'Design contract' and 'Pre-merge checks' sections restate #404 findings that are not current requirements. The parent references (#616, #617, #618) name sibling-PR scope and are not directly linked targets. No active directly linked target remains, so no linked-issue coding requirement applies.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes from the merge base to head stay within the OpenAI-family cancellation scope the PR states, which includes kimi-code. Provider files and specs: openai.ts, base-openai-compatible-provider.ts, zai.ts, kimi-code.ts, and their specs. Shared support: utils/error-handler.ts (handleOpenAIRequestError), utils/abort-signal.ts (createAbortError cause), utils/request-timeout.ts, and test-utils/errors.ts (captureError). Kimi discovery and completion cancellation: fetchers/kimi-code.ts and modelCache-related call sites. The oauth.ts change is on the kimi-code request path. It threads the caller signal into the refresh POST, normalizes caller-caused aborts to AbortError, and shares one refresh among waiters that detach independently. It also adds a generation bump on save so a stale invalid_grant cannot clear newer credentials. This concurrency and credential-lifecycle behavior is broader than request cancellation, but it sits in the same refresh path and is reported as part of the kimi-code cancellation work. It is not unrelated. Test-mock updates (fireworks.spec.ts, sambanova.spec.ts, and the OpenAI mocks) add APIUserAbortError for the new normalization. The eslint-suppressions.json edit tracks lint counts for changed specs. The root package.json diff between merge base and head is empty, so the Vitest bump described in the PR text is absent and creates no out-of-scope change. The PR description's scope line ('the four providers and their specs') and its note that OAuth refresh is outside the diff are stale and do not change this verdict.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The Kimi OAuth refresh change can restore credentials after sign-out. In src/integrations/kimi-code/oauth.ts:265-270, clearCredentials waits only for the refresh captured at entry. After the last waiter aborts that refresh, lines 285-301 allow a replacement to start with the new credential generation. If the replacement finishes after deletion, it saves credentials again. The existing sign-out race test covers only one refresh.
Resolution
Block refreshes while credentials are being cleared, and ensure no in-flight refresh can save credentials after the clear completes. Add a regression test for an aborted refresh, concurrent sign-out, and a replacement refresh.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
createAbortError now accepts a cause, but its direct tests do not check the supplied or omitted cause (abort-signal.ts:162-165, abort-signal.spec.ts:590-605). error-handler.spec.ts:363-373 checks cause identity only through a caller. The prior coverage gap remains.
Resolution
Add direct createAbortError tests for cause identity when supplied and no cause when omitted. Assert the error name and message in both cases.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
Two Kimi OAuth cancellation paths can start duplicate refresh work. - oauth.ts:279-290 starts a refresh after credential loading without rechecking the caller signal. If cancellation occurs during the load, fetch starts before awaitRefresh detects it. - oauth.ts:82-116,162-178,285-301 removes the abort listener when headers arrive, before the response body is read. If the last waiter cancels during body consumption, the old refresh continues while a new caller starts a replacement. The old refresh can still save credentials. The base revision did not start a replacement while a refresh was pending.
Resolution
Check the caller signal before and after credential loading. Keep response-body consumption within the refresh cancellation scope. Prevent a cancelled refresh from saving credentials or overlapping a replacement. Add regression tests for cancellation during credential loading and response-body consumption.

…ks and sambanova specs
Root cause: the abort-aware completePrompt error path inherited by fireworks
and sambanova (base-openai-compatible-provider.ts) references the
APIUserAbortError export of the openai SDK, which their specs' partial
vi.mock("openai", ...) factories did not define, so the completePrompt
error-path tests failed in the CI full suite with
'No "APIUserAbortError" export is defined on the "openai" mock'.
The mocks now export APIUserAbortError using the same shape as the other
series specs (base-openai-compatible-provider, zai, openai, kimi-code).
Root cause: the creation-site catches only cover chat.completions.create;
an abort that surfaces while the async iterator is being consumed
(APIUserAbortError / fetch-level AbortError thrown mid-stream) leaked as
the raw SDK error, which violates the Task.ts abort contract (an Error
whose name is "AbortError" and whose message ends in "aborted").
The stream iteration is now wrapped and normalized through the same
abort-aware handleOpenAIRequestError used at the creation sites:
- base-openai-compatible-provider.ts: the createMessage for-await loop
- openai.ts: the streaming createMessage for-await loop
- openai.ts: the o3-family yield* this.handleStreamResponse(stream)
The Z.ai thinking path inherits the base createMessage iteration, so it
is covered by the base-provider fix. Non-abort iteration errors keep the
existing provider-prefix wrap.
Adds four regression tests (base, openai streaming, o3-family streaming,
zai thinking path) with iterators that reject with APIUserAbortError
after yielding the first chunk. Addresses the CodeRabbit pre-merge review
comment on PR Zoo-Code-Org#1311.
…eration wrapper
The stream-iteration wrapper added in 35c95ea routes non-abort
iteration errors through handleOpenAIRequestError, so a provider base_resp
stream error (MiniMax-style inline error chunk) is now rethrown with the
provider-prefix wrap ("TestProvider completion error: ...") instead of the
raw message. Adds a focused regression test that yields a chunk carrying
base_resp and pins the wrapped message.
… openai abort paths
The codecov patch report (97.83% at 217f120) flagged 2 partial branch
lines (BRDA taken=0 on the ?? / || fallback sides of added lines):
- api/providers/base-openai-compatible-provider.ts:171
branch 1 of `${...} ${chunkAny.base_resp.status_msg || "Unknown error"}`
- the || "Unknown error" fallback was never exercised; added a focused
test yielding a base_resp chunk with status_code set but no
status_msg, asserting the wrapped "Unknown error" message.
- api/providers/openai.ts:233
branch 1 of `const delta = chunk.choices?.[0]?.delta ?? {}`
- the ?? {} fallback (chunk with no delta field) was never exercised;
added a focused streaming test yielding a delta-less final chunk and
asserting the stream completes without throwing.
Full api/providers suite: 1698 passed. No provider code changed.
…o abort-signal utils
The OpenAI-family provider PRs (Zoo-Code-Org#1309, Zoo-Code-Org#1311) carry per-provider copies of the same abort-detection helper (isRequestAborted) and the same abort-error constructor (createAbortError); only the provider name in the message differs. Per the CodeRabbit maintainability finding on Zoo-Code-Org#1309 (extract the shared abort helpers into utils/abort-signal.ts), these are now shared in the foundation utility:
- isRequestAborted(error, signal?) - true when the caller signal fired, a native AbortError / OpenAI SDK APIUserAbortError was raised, or the message is exactly "Request was aborted." (exact match; a substring match would misclassify unrelated errors that merely mention aborting)
- createAbortError(providerName) - fresh error with name === "AbortError" and message "The <providerName> request was aborted", satisfying the Task.ts abort contract
- exported OpenAiRequestOptions type
7 new tests (isRequestAborted 4, createAbortError 3).

[row 3916793393] Re-measured against 963570a: captureError is already the shared helper this row asks for — src/test-utils/errors.ts, imported by every spec in the cohort: base spec :11, kimi-code.spec :5, openai.spec :16, zai.spec :20. There is no per-file copy left to extract at this head.
[row 3916793406] Re-measured against 963570a: the merged-signal assertion can fail. openai.spec.ts:1166-1170 aborts the caller's controller and expects the merged signal to flip, with a comment naming the regression that would stop it there (dropping options.abortSignal); the timeout-only case is kept in its own test at :1175+. Addressed at this head.
[row 3916793446] Superseded at 963570a: handleOpenAIRequestError has exactly one definition — src/api/providers/utils/error-handler.ts:144 — and the byte-duplicate is gone. Call sites, all importing that module: base-openai-compatible-provider.ts :9 (import) + :141/:230/:237/:310; openai.ts :30 (import) + :219/:265/:272/:306 (and further catch sites shown by git grep); zai.ts :19 (import) + :193; error-handler.spec.ts :398-440. No change to land; listing per the dedup protocol.
[row 3917577537] Re-measured against 963570a: the rejection happens before preparation. kimi-code.ts:117 runs throwIfAborted before prepareRequest (:118) and re-checks after it (:121, comment: a cancellation landing during discovery must not issue the completion request); completePrompt mirrors it (:134/:136), and the 401-retry paths guard before the OAuth refresh too (:127/:143). Spec: kimi-code.spec.ts:344-366 asserts no completion request, no model discovery, and no token work; :368+ covers abort during preparation. Addressed.
[row 3917577554] Posture (measured at 963570a): the caller-signal-plus-timeoutMs combination is tested at the layer that implements the merge — base spec :695-709 asserts requestOptions.timeout === 5000 (:704) and that caller cancellation still flips the merged signal (:707-708), with the comment naming the timeout-only-implementation would-pass case. zai delegates to the same helper (zai.ts:193), and zai.spec covers its own pre-reject/normalization (:771-793) and GLM-5.3 cap (:795+). Keeping the combo probe in the implementing spec follows the narrowest-layer guidance; not adding a duplicate combo test to zai.spec.
[row 3917577564] Superseded at 963570a (measured): scanning every line the PR range adds, the only new as any ever introduced was the chunk cast the row describes, and at this head it is gone — provider chunk data is read through unknown + a type guard (base-openai-compatible-provider.ts:165-175, comment: read via the unknown guard instead of casting the whole chunk); chunkAny is absent from the tree and git grep 'as any' shows no cast on that path. (params as any).thinking (:113/:282) and response as any (:301) are pre-existing lines — not added by this PR — and untouched here. No guard change left to make on new code.
[row 3917577575] Re-measured against 963570a: both completePrompt paths forward a positive timeoutMs as the per-request SDK timeout. openai.ts:463-475 (setOption("timeout", requestTimeout); doc comment :456-461 explains the SDK-default override), base-openai-compatible-provider.ts:290-295 (comment :285-289: without it the SDK falls back to the client-level default that can expire before a larger per-request timeoutMs), and zai's GLM-5.3 override uses the same request-timeout helper. Specs pin requestOptions.timeout (openai.spec :1172, base spec :704) plus cap behavior (base :711-720). Addressed; leaving open for the reviewer.
[row 3917985584] Re-measured against 963570a: base spec :695-709 would not pass a timeout-ignoring implementation — :704 asserts requestOptions?.timeout === 5000, and :707-708 then proves caller cancellation survives the merged signal. A timeout-only signal is a separate test (:1175+ in openai.spec; the oversized cap is base spec :711-720). Both branches are exercised. Addressed.
[row 3917985602] Measured against 963570a: the pre-abort tests already use the OAuth handler — kimi-code.spec.ts:346 and :369 construct new KimiCodeHandler({ kimiCodeAuthMethod: "oauth" }), and :362-365 asserts no model discovery and no token work (mockGetAccessToken / mockForceRefreshAccessToken not called). The api-key mode is the other branch (short-circuit before OAuth). Handler-level cancellation against a live OAuth POST is in kimi-code.oauth-cancellation.spec.ts:46-63. Premise about api-key setup superseded.
[row 3917985613] Re-measured against 963570a: abort-while-pending is exercised where the merged signal is observed: openai.spec.ts:1175+ parks the mock request until its merged signal actually aborts and then asserts the abort, the retained timeout, and the error contract — the comment at :1176-1179 states the reason: an immediately-resolving mock only proves a signal was passed. zai.spec.ts:733-759 covers a mid-stream abort on the thinking path via the inherited loop (normalizes to the Task.ts contract), :771-782 covers already-aborted-before-request with no client call. Addressed.
[row 4380591471] Superseded at 963570a (the manager was rewritten since this row's snapshot): each refresh owns a waiter set (oauth.ts:214-216, 332-379). Every caller races the shared promise against its own signal and detaches on its own abort; the shared POST is aborted only when waiters.size === 0 (:349, :364 — comment: abort the shared POST only when nobody else is waiting). One caller's cancellation no longer aborts every waiter's refresh. Covered by the abort tests in oauth.spec.ts (caller abort after POST start) and kimi-code.oauth-cancellation.spec.ts:46-63.
[row 4380591479] Re-measured against 963570a: postForm's catch classifies from the caller signal — oauth.ts:101-113: only a rejection sourced from the caller's own abort is normalized to the OAuth abort error (:107-112), an independent OAuth/network failure racing the abort is rethrown unchanged (:103-106 comment + :113), and cancelled waiters reject via createOAuthAbortError() (:350, :362) before preparation continues. Addressed.
[row 4383638065] Covered at 963570a: oauth.spec.ts:690-704 is the in-flight case — the fetch double parks the POST, getAccessToken has already started the refresh, the caller then aborts with a custom reason, and the promise rejects as AbortError (:699-703). The handler-level twin (cancellation reaching a real completion attempt) is kimi-code.oauth-cancellation.spec.ts:46-63. Measuring loadCredentials' state mid-refresh directly would reach into private state without new behavioral signal; leaving as-is.
[row 4383638073] By design (measured at 963570a): postForm's internal deadline is deliberately not normalized — :105-106 comment: the internal timeout is never normalized here; timeout errors are rethrown as-is so callers can distinguish a stalled POST from a cancellation. Only signal?.aborted === true caller rejections convert (:107-112). The "bounds token refresh requests with a deadline" test in oauth.spec.ts pins the shape. Not converting.
[row 4383638095] Re-measured against 963570a: awaitRefresh registers callers without a signal as waiters that cannot detach — oauth.ts:340-346, with the comment spelling this out: they stay registered until the shared POST settles so a signaling caller detaching last cannot abort a refresh an un-signaled waiter depends on. Addressed at this head.
[row 4383638103] Re-measured against 963570a: getAccessToken starts a replacement refresh when !this.refreshPromise || this.refreshController?.signal.aborted (oauth.ts:285-289, comment: a pending refresh whose controller was already aborted can never settle — start a replacement even if the old promise has not run its finally yet), and each refresh's finally clears shared state only while it is still the current controller (:323-328). Replacement-safe. Addressed.
[row 4506066341] Covered at 963570a: the leak test collects everything the generator yields after the abort and asserts leaked is empty plus the AbortError contract — base-openai-compatible-provider.spec.ts:520-537; the comment (:520-522) states the deferred second chunk must not come through an aborted stream. The row's ask is already the test body. (Low-value note; leaving the assertion pair as-is.)
[row 4506066347] Re-measured against 963570a: zai.spec.ts:725-730 already wraps both assertions in try/finally with errorLog.mockRestore() in the finally — a captureError throw or a failed expectation restores the spy. Addressed. (Low-value.)
[row 4506066352] Posture (measured at 963570a): cancellation is checked at the top of each streamed chunk (base-openai-compatible-provider.ts:157-163) and again after the loop before any buffered usage or matcher.final() content is emitted (:233-238). A cancellation landing mid-chunk means at most that chunk's already-mapped events surface before the abort contract fires; the post-loop guard specifically stops the buffered tail. Per-event checks would add hot-path cost without changing the observable contract. Not adding (row flagged low-value).
[row 4506066354] By design (measured at 963570a): on cancellation the stream surfaces the Task.ts abort contract instead of a normal completion carrying buffered usage (:233-238, guard comment) — a cancelled request reaches Task.ts as an AbortError, which is what the lifecycle keys on. Reporting buffered usage through a successful terminal for an aborted request would be the surprising half. Deliberate tradeoff, documented in the comment; flagged for the code owner if they want the opposite.
[row 4506066356] Posture (measured at 963570a): the pre-flight check (:271) and abort normalization in the catch (:309-311) are both in place. A non-stream result the SDK resolved before the abort boundary is returned as a success: converting a fully-delivered answer into a failure because the caller aborted microseconds after resolution would discard delivered work. Race semantics left as-is (row flagged low-value).
[row 4506066360] Re-measured against 963570a: error-handler.ts:150-156 classifies exactly this case — APIUserAbortError with the caller's signal not aborted and requestSignal.reason.name === "TimeoutError" produces a TimeoutError-tagged error so a timeout stays distinguishable from a user cancellation; the shapes are pinned in error-handler.spec.ts :398-440 (incl. the caller-signal-plus-requestSignal case at :413/:420). Addressed.
[row 4506066363] Re-measured against 963570a: the refresh POST — headers and body — runs on the refresh controller's signal: startRefresh passes controller.signal into refreshKimiCodeAccessToken (oauth.ts:296-299), which passes it to postForm (:168-176). When the last waiter detaches, the controller aborts (:364), so readOAuthError/body consumption on the aborted fetch rejects, and startRefresh.catch surfaces the settled-with-abort controller as the OAuth abort error (:320). Cancellation stays active through body consumption. Addressed.
[row 4506066366] Re-measured against 963570a: each refresh captures its own generation + controller at POST start (oauth.ts:294-299); awaitRefresh binds every waiter to the promise and waiter-set captured at entry (:333-336 region), and only the still-current controller's finally clears the shared state (:323-328). A replacement refresh enrolls new waiters in new state; waiters already joined keep the set they bound to. Addressed.
[row 4506069242] Covered at 963570a: oauth.spec.ts:690-704 aborts after the refresh POST has started (fetch double keeps it pending) and asserts the AbortError rejection; the handler-level post-start cancellation is kimi-code.oauth-cancellation.spec.ts:46-63. The suggested scenario is pinned at manager level and handler level; not adding a third copy (trivial/low-value).
[row 4506069244] Posture at 963570a: the retry test asserts what this layer promises — the caller's signal reaches discovery (kimi-code.spec.ts:458-461) and a later request retries discovery instead of keeping fallback state (:465-467). The retried metadata itself flows through getModel()'s fallback-vs-discovered path (kimi-code.ts:100-103 comment), which the model-cache layer tests cover. Asserting specific fields here would duplicate that layer (trivial note).
[row 4506069246] Adopted — landed in b7e16d9 (pushed to feat/abort-r2-openai-family, read back after push). Two production changes: saveCredentials installs under a new generation (oauth.ts:257-259) so a delayed verdict from an older refresh can no longer pass the currency check; and the refresh catch clears credentials/secrets/state only when generation === this.credentialsGeneration (:308-317) — the scenario the row names (cancelled refresh's invalid_grant lands after a newer sign-in) now keeps the newer credentials and secret. New test: "a delayed invalid_grant from a stale refresh keeps credentials a newer sign-in saved" (oauth.spec.ts:716-757) — parks the POST, installs a newer sign-in, releases the invalid_grant verdict, asserts credentials + stored secret survive and the fresh token is served without a new POST. Control with the guard reverted: fails with "expected undefined to be 'new'" — the stale verdict clearing the newer credentials, the row's named failure mode. Gates: tsc --noEmit clean; eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 clean on both files; prettier clean; integrations/kimi-code + api/providers 3554 passed / 1 skipped.
The last saved pre-merge assessment reported a blocking Kimi OAuth credential-clearing race. Its status on the current revision is not verified.

## ESLint Suppressions
When writing new code:
- Avoid `as any`; use typed APIs directly (e.g. `RooCodeEventName.X` constants with typed `on()`/`listenerCount()`), or bracket notation (`obj["privateField"]`) to access private members. Prefer precise test doubles or `unknown` with a type guard over double assertions (`as unknown as T`); use double assertions only as a last resort, with a comment explaining why.

Do not classify them as unrelated provider work solely because they handle MiniMax response errors. Evaluate behavior differences separately from scope.

Closes #404 — the OpenAI-compatible cancellation objective, for the OpenAI provider family implemented in this PR (
openai,base-openai-compatible-providerand its inheritors,zai,kimi-code).This PR covers only the OpenAI-family portion of the broader provider sweep; the remaining scope lands via sibling PRs in this series:
Description
Round 2 of the abort-signal series: wires request-cancellation signals through the OpenAI family of providers.
client.chat.completions.createsites (createMessage streaming + non-streaming, O3-family streaming + non-streaming, completePrompt) build their request config throughRequestConfigBuilder, adopted from the start of this PR — the Azure AI Inferencepathoption and the abort signal compose in one builder (setOption("path", ...)+setAbortSignal). Every catch now normalizes abort failures to the Task.ts contract shape (name === "AbortError", message ending inaborted) via an abort-awarehandleOpenAIRequestError, while non-abort errors keep the existing provider-prefix wrap. Both streaming loops (the maincreateMessagepath and the O3-familyhandleStreamResponse) gain the loop-defense contract: a top-of-loop break stops processing buffered chunks that arrived after the caller's abort, and a post-loop check surfaces the Task.ts abort contract when the stream would otherwise end normally on an already-aborted signal.createMessage/createStream/completePromptpath adoptedRequestConfigBuilderfor signal forwarding and gains the exported abort-aware error helperhandleOpenAIRequestError(reused by zai.ts). Subclasses that do not override these methods (fireworks, sambanova, baseten) inherit the wiring, including the streaming loop's top-of-loop break and post-loop abort check.createStreamno longer dropsrequestOptions; the thinking path and the glm-5.3completePromptpath forward a merged signal (external signal +timeoutMsviamergeAbortSignalAndTimeout).completePromptno longer dropsCompletePromptOptions— options are forwarded on both the initial call and the 401 OAuth retry.createMessageinherits the openai.ts wiring via metadata passthrough.Design notes:
CompletePromptOptionsis not assignable toApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata(requiredtaskId) — gap G7 — so completePrompt paths usesetOption("signal", mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...))instead ofsetAbortSignal(metadata).mergeAbortSignalAndTimeouttreatstimeoutMs <= 0as no timeout internally, so atimeoutMs: 0call site passes no signal rather than a timeout that would abort immediately.RequestOptionstype does not satisfy the builder'sRequestConfigOptionsBaseconstraint (itsheaders/signalshapes differ), so each provider declares a minimal localOpenAiRequestConfigshape as the builder generic parameter.throwIfAbortedguard rejects before any network I/O when the signal is already aborted. This branch is STACKED on #1288: the foundation commit

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run api/providers/__tests__/openai.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/base-openai-compatible-provider.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/zai.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/kimi-code.spec.ts— all green. New per-provider "abort signal wiring" suites cover: signal identity at every create site (including Azure path composition), signal + timeout merging, thetimeoutMs: 0guard, pre-aborted rejection before any request, SDKAPIUserAbortErrorand fetch-levelAbortErrornormalization to the Task.ts contract shape, and non-abort provider-prefix wrap regression. Deferred-chunk kill tests (2 in openai.spec.ts incl. the O3-family path, 1 in the base spec) prove the loop defense structurally: the second chunk is released only after the abort, so the top-of-loop break is the only thing that prevents the leak (asserted via aleakedcollection), andcaptureErrorproves the post-loop check rejects with the contract message rather than a normal stream end.vitest run <specs> --coverage(v8/lcov) and cross-referenced against thegit diffadded lines.pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit— exit 0.pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <changed files>— zero warnings; one stale suppression entry pruned (kimi-code.spec.ts @typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any 1 -> 0, the spec rewrite removed the only as-any cast); no suppression count increased.Pre-Submission Checklist

Gate evidence (local, pre-push at 393b516)
setOption("signal", ...)StringLiteral mutant, a known flake class (the mutant drops the signal, so the abort test can only fail through the vitest timeout).Additional Notes
Part of the abort-signal series (round 2). Builds on #674, #901, #1008, and #1288. Addresses #404.
In-scope justification for the two non-#404-looking items
package.jsondevDependencyvitest 4.1.11: mutation-gate infrastructure — the changed-code mutation gate (Stryker via zdt) must resolve a vitest binary at the repository root to run this PR's gate (commit 0703c58), and the 4.1.11 pin is the CI dependency-review advisory bump (commit 4238bd1). It is the mechanism by which this PR's [BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 changes are gate-verified, not a functional change.base_respre-typing: the hunk is inside this PR's new abort-aware streaming loop inbase-openai-compatible-provider.ts— the same change adds the top-of-loopif (signal?.aborted) breakdefense and the try wrapper that normalizes abort errors raised during stream iteration ([BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 round 2, commits 393b516 and 35c95ea). The previouschunk as anyread was re-typed with an unknown guard in that restructure; behavior is preserved (same status_code/status_msg semantics and error message shape), covered by the base_resp stream-error path test (commit 217f120).Updated 2026-10-11 (head
6e46bc78c)995167eed) (merge commit6e46bc78c), clearing thehas-conflictsstate.base-openai-compatible-provider.spec.ts— main prettier-collapsed the custom-model assertion to one line; this branch extends it to pin the two-argumentcreate(body, requestConfig)call shape (the abort wiring's contract). The two-argument assertion is kept (it doesn't fit one line, so main's reformat doesn't apply to it).Verification at this head: affected provider/fetcher/util specs 512/514 passed — the 2 failures are
strict: truedefault-path cases and are a local-environment artifact: this worktree's@roo-code/typesresolves through a junction to a donor tree that predates the strict-tool-schemas export, soDEFAULT_OPEN_AI_STRICT_TOOL_SCHEMASisundefinedat runtime there. The full strict-schema suite (8 tests) passes on a fresh-install worktree against the same main merge, and the merged production strict path is byte-identical to main's. Merged current upstream
maininto the branch to clear the dirty state. Main's model-cache redesign (handler.fetchModels(options, signal)+getModelCacheScope) superseded this branch's signal threading through the modelCache fetcher-dispatch switch, sofetchers/modelCache.tsand its spec took main's versions wholesale — the kimi signal forwarding the branch's two modelCache spec tests pinned now lives at the fetcher level (fetchers/kimi-code.spec.ts) and at the call site (options.signalfeeds the pre-abort fast-fail). Inkimi-code.tsboth sides' imports were merged and the discovery call site combined: main's handler argument plus the branch'soptions.signal.Verification at this head: 512/512 green across the eleven touched specs;

Registered evidence for the pre-merge Linked-Issues check at head 7f085ab:
createMessagehands the caller'smetadata.abortSignalto the inherited OpenAI SDK request aschat.completions.create(params, { signal })— the SDK passesRequestOptions.signalstraight tofetch, so a cancellation aborts the in-flight HTTP request at the transport level, not merely stream consumption. Pinned by the test "forwards the metadata abort signal to the inherited OpenAI SDK request", which asserts the SDK call receives the exact caller signal instance.completePromptpassesmergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options.abortSignal, options.timeoutMs)as the SDK request'ssignal(RequestConfigBuilder.setOption("signal", ...)in the shared OpenAI wiring), pinned by "forwards completePrompt abort options and timeoutMs through the override on both 401 retry attempts".throwIfAbortedbefore token/discovery work and before the SDK call, plus the post-prepare re-check) ensure a cancelled request never issues a POST — pinned by "rejects before any request when the createMessage abort signal is already aborted" and "stops before the completion request when the signal aborts during model preparation".AbortError(name === "AbortError").Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Five directives removed (base-openai-compatible-provider.ts 3, openai.ts 2):
ConditionalExpression,LogicalOperatoron the baseResp object guard: equivalent for all JSON-reachable baseResponse values (only null/object/number/string/boolean reach it; each mutant agrees with the original on every one).ConditionalExpressiononbaseRespStatusCode !== 0: a truthy statusCode is necessarily !== 0, so deleting the check cannot change the branch outcome.ConditionalExpression,EqualityOperatoron the tool_calls guard: with an empty activeToolCallIds the guard is the only bail; the mutants keep identical behavior for the covered finish reasons.LogicalOperator(&& -> ||) on the strict-tool-schemas option read (x2): an unset option makes&&yield undefined, which the parameter default in convertToolsForOpenAI turns back into the same strict value as??- equivalent.Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
