This PR adds unit tests for the wp_ajax_menu_get_metabox() function located in src/wp-admin/includes/ajax-actions.php.

The tests cover:

  • Successful retrieval of post type metaboxes (e.g., for 'post').
  • Successful retrieval of taxonomy metaboxes (e.g., for 'category').
  • Proper handling of insufficient user permissions (verification of edit_theme_options capability).
  • Validation of input parameters (item-type and item-object).

Test using WordPress Playground

The changes in this pull request can previewed and tested using a WordPress Playground instance.

WordPress Playground is an experimental project that creates a full WordPress instance entirely within the browser.

Some things to be aware of

  • All changes will be lost when closing a tab with a Playground instance.
  • All changes will be lost when refreshing the page.
  • A fresh instance is created each time the link below is clicked.
  • Every time this pull request is updated, a new ZIP file containing all changes is created. If changes are not reflected in the Playground instance,
it's possible that the most recent build failed, or has not completed. Check the list of workflow runs to be sure.

For more details about these limitations and more, check out the Limitations page in the WordPress Playground documentation.

🟡 Changes recommended

The invalid-item AJAX tests can pass despite nonempty wp_die() errors because they do not assert that the caught exception messages are empty.

Post-type, taxonomy, and permission checks cover distinct behavior. The unused post fixture is optional cleanup. This PR's cases passed in the supplied local single-site and multisite runs. Current CI is not verified green; this is code approval only.

@pbearne The patch passes local randomized PHPUnit checks against current trunk in single-site and multisite, plus PHP lint and coding standards.

The remaining failed checks are from June. Their logs have expired, and GitHub rejected a job rerun because the run is over a month old. I cannot establish the cause from the retained metadata. Could you refresh this branch against trunk to produce a current CI run before landing?
