fix(marko-virtual): retry a prepend's anchor write clamped before the sizer commits - #1359
The Marko tags call _willUpdate() from onUpdate, but Marko renders the new size into the consumer's sizer in a later batch. On an end-anchored prepend, the anchor sync in _willUpdate writes the shifted offset while the sizer still has its old height, so the browser clamps it to the old max. If scrollToEnd() ran just before the prepend landed, the view was left one prepend (~870px in chat-pretext) above the bottom. Core already held the new offset, so nothing corrected it.
virtual-core: the prepend anchor sync in _willUpdate now records a clamped write with _clampedBy, like the compensation and hold-flush writes already do. The existing clamp retry (paddingEnd option breaks followOnAppend + anchorTo: 'end' #1258) can then re-issue it once the sizer has grown. _retryClampedAdjustment is now callable by adapters, like _willUpdate.
marko-virtual: both <virtualizer> and <window-virtualizer> call the retry from a <script> effect that depends on size. Marko runs that effect after the render that commits the new total size. It does nothing when no write was clamped.
I first tried a requestAnimationFrame retry from onUpdate, the approach discussed on #1321, but it is not reliable. Marko's scheduler (flushAndWaitFrame → requestAnimationFrame → MessageChannel) renders the batch in a task after the frame, so the frame callback still sees the old height. I instrumented the chat-pretext route. At the rAF, scrollHeight was still 3261. In the effect after the size render, it was 4131.
Tests
virtual-core/tests/anchor-end.test.ts: a clamped prepend anchor sync is recorded and re-issued once the sizer grows. It stays pending through a retry made before the sizer grows. An explicit scroll drops it. Nothing is recorded when the sizer was committed first.
Marko e2e: re-enabled the two Latest returns to the bottom… tests that were marked fixme for this issue. I also added a deterministic variant to chat.spec.ts and chat-pretext.spec.ts. It scrolls to the top and clicks Latest inside the page, well within the 180ms history timer, so the prepend always lands after the jump. It fails if either the core change or the Marko change is reverted, and passes with both.
Ran locally (Chromium headless):
test:lib, test:types, test:eslint for every package; knip; sherif. The scroll-trace snapshots did not change.
test:e2e for react-virtual (44), angular-virtual (14) and marko-virtual (84). The Marko chat specs plus the race repro from the issue also passed 104/104 with --repeat-each 4.
I have tested this code locally with pnpm run test:pr.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue where loading earlier content immediately after jumping to the latest items could leave an end-anchored list scrolled away from the bottom. The view now returns to the latest position after the new content is added, keeping the “At latest” status accurate. This applies to virtualized lists and window-based virtualized lists in Marko.
… sizer commits
The Marko tags call `_willUpdate()` from `onUpdate`, but Marko renders the new
`size` into the consumer's sizer in a later batch. On an end-anchored prepend
the anchor sync in `_willUpdate` therefore writes the shifted offset while the
sizer still has its old height, and the browser clamps it to the old max. When
`scrollToEnd()` ran just before the prepend landed (a "Latest" click while a
history load is in flight), the view was left one prepend above the bottom.
Core already held the new offset, so `isAtEnd()` reported true and nothing
corrected it.
Core now records that anchor sync with `_clampedBy`, as the compensation and
hold-flush writes already do, so the existing clamp retry (TanStack#1258) re-issues it
once the sizer has grown. `_retryClampedAdjustment` becomes adapter-callable
like `_willUpdate`, and both Marko tags call it from a `<script>` effect that
depends on `size`, which Marko runs after the render that commits the new
total size. A `requestAnimationFrame` retry is not enough here: Marko's render
batch runs in a task after the frame, so the frame callback still sees the old
scroll height.
Tests:
- virtual-core: a clamped prepend anchor sync is recorded, stays pending
until the sizer grows, is dropped by an explicit scroll, and is not
recorded when the sizer was committed first.
- marko-virtual e2e: re-enable the two "Latest" tests marked fixme for this
issue and add a deterministic variant to the chat and chat-pretext specs
that clicks Latest inside the 180ms history timer. It fails with either
half of the fix reverted.

Virtual core now records anchor-sync writes that exceed the current scroll maximum and retries them after Marko commits the updated size. The changes enable and extend Latest-button end-to-end tests, add core regression tests, and include patch changeset entries.

Summary
Record and retry clamped anchor writes packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts, packages/virtual-core/tests/anchor-end.test.ts
Virtual core records anchor-sync targets that exceed the current scroll maximum. Tests cover retry after sizer growth, retry before growth, cancellation by an explicit scroll, and a prepend with the sizer already committed.
Retry after Marko size commits packages/marko-virtual/src/tags/virtualizer/index.marko, packages/marko-virtual/src/tags/window-virtualizer/index.marko, packages/marko-virtual/e2e/app/e2e/chat*.spec.ts, .changeset/marko-prepend-anchor-retry.md
Both Marko virtualizer tags retry clamped adjustments after rendering the updated size. The E2E tests activate and check the Latest behavior during an in-flight history load. The changeset lists patch releases for both packages.
The fix improves Marko prepend anchoring, but a prepend combined with tail trimming can leave a stale retry that later shifts the viewport. The new race tests can also fail under slow scheduling. These are bounded risks suitable for owner awareness or follow-up.

Explanation
Issue #1267 requires recovery when an end-anchored prepend writes the new offset before the sizer grows. virtual-core now records the anchor target with _clampedBy and exposes _retryClampedAdjustment(). Both Marko virtualizer tags call the retry from a size-dependent render script. Core tests cover delayed sizer growth, pending retries, explicit-scroll cancellation, and committed sizing. The enabled and added Marko tests cover the bottom-pinning race.

Make the in-flight window in this test deterministic.
The test assumes the 180ms history timer outlasts two animation frames and a setTimeout(0) before it reads the status. Under slow CI, the load can finish first. The Loading history assertion then fails even when the retry fix is correct. Replace the timing assumption with a controllable load delay or another deterministic signal for the in-flight state.

Make the load-start check deterministic before reading the status.
After el.scrollTop = 0, the scroll handler starts a 180ms history timer. The test then waits two animation frames and one task before it reads Loading history. If scheduling delays those waits past the timer, the load finishes first. The assertion then fails although the production path is correct. Read the status only after the load has started, or make the history delay controllable in the test.

Clear the clamped anchor record when a trim leaves its target unreachable.
After a prepend that is balanced by a tail trim, the anchor write to 150 clamps at max 50 and is recorded for retry. The record survives because no scroll event clears it. When a later append grows max to 100, _retryClampedAdjustment() writes 150 again, and the reader's viewport moves 50px. Add a regression test for this sequence and clear the record in this case.
