Fixes #9239.

Description

nnunetv2 2.7.0 changed nnUNetTrainer.build_network_architecture from

build_network_architecture(architecture_class_name, arch_init_kwargs, arch_init_kwargs_req_import,
                           num_input_channels, num_output_channels, enable_deep_supervision=True)

to

build_network_architecture(plans_manager, configuration_manager,
                           num_input_channels, num_output_channels, enable_deep_supervision=True)

ModelnnUNetWrapper passes the old arguments by position, so with nnunetv2 2.7.0 or later, ModelnnUNetWrapper and get_nnunet_monai_predictor fail with TypeError: nnUNetTrainer.build_network_architecture() got multiple values for argument 'enable_deep_supervision'.

The wrapper now picks the call from the trainer's signature: if it has a plans_manager parameter, the wrapper passes the plans and configuration managers; otherwise it uses the existing arguments. nnunetv2 2.8.1 does the same in nnUNetPredictor.initialize_from_trained_model_folder and nnUNetTrainer.initialize, so trainers that override build_network_architecture keep working with either signature. The network spec check added in #9237 still runs before the network is built.

Tests added in tests/apps/nnunet/test_nnunet_bundle_network_spec.py:

  • test_default_plans_build_the_network builds the network through the wrapper with the installed nnunetv2, without mocking the trainer, and checks that a PlainConvUNet without deep supervision is returned.
  • test_build_network_architecture_signatures patches the trainer with each signature and checks the arguments it receives.

Both fail on dev with nnunetv2 2.8.1 with the TypeError above. With this change, tests/apps/nnunet/test_nnunet_bundle_network_spec.py passes (17 tests) with nnunetv2 2.6.4, 2.7.0 and 2.8.1 (torch 2.15.0+cpu, Python 3.12). test_nnunetv2_runner_command and test_nnunetv2_runner_optional_import also pass. These tests are skipped when nnunetv2 is not installed, which is currently the case in CI. The nnU-Net integration tests were not run.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
  • Breaking change (fix or new feature that would cause existing functionality to change).
  • New tests added to cover the changes.
  • Integration tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh -f -u --net --coverage.
  • Quick tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh --quick --unittests --disttests.
  • In-line docstrings updated.
  • Documentation updated, tested make html command in the docs/ folder.

nnunetv2 2.7 changed nnUNetTrainer.build_network_architecture to take
the plans and configuration managers instead of the unpacked network
arguments. ModelnnUNetWrapper still passed the old arguments by
position, so loading a model with nnunetv2 2.7 or later raised
"TypeError: got multiple values for argument 'enable_deep_supervision'".

Choose the call from the trainer's signature, as nnunetv2 does in its
own predictor and trainer, so both old and new releases are supported.

Fixes Project-MONAI#9239.

Walkthrough

ModelnnUNetWrapper now checks the build_network_architecture signature and selects the matching call interface. Both paths pass the computed input and output channel counts and disable deep supervision. Tests cover the default PlainConvUNet configuration and both builder signatures.

Explanation

Issue #9239 requires ModelnnUNetWrapper to support both legacy and nnunetv2 2.7+ build_network_architecture signatures. monai/apps/nnunet/nnunet_bundle.py selects the call from the trainer signature and passes the correct managers or legacy arguments. Both paths disable deep supervision. The added tests cover both signatures and default network construction.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Document both builder mocks.

Add Google-style docstrings to legacy and current. Describe their parameters and returned network. As per path instructions, “Docstrings should be present for all definition” and describe variables and return values in Google style.

Use a multi-channel, multi-class fixture in the builder signature test.

The signature test uses the one-input, two-label fixture. It asserts (UNET, 1, 2, False) for both builder calls. Hard-coding those defaults in ModelnnUNetWrapper would still pass. Those values are the only inputs that check the computed channel counts. The network built for a multi-channel or multi-class dataset would then be wrong, and no unit test would catch it.

Write a dataset with two input channels and three labels in that test. Assert the non-default counts.

Run the nnUNet signature test in CI.

The test that covers both build_network_architecture signatures is guarded by skipUnless(has_nnunet). The CI jobs do not install nnunetv2, so the legacy and current branches do not provide guaranteed regression coverage. Add nnunetv2 to a suitable Linux test job and run tests/apps/nnunet/test_nnunet_bundle_network_spec.py.

Use a dataset with two input channels and three labels so the test
fails if the wrapper passes fixed channel counts to the trainer.
