Add interp argument to Invertd/Invert to choose the inversion interpolation mode - #9240
Invertd and Invert control the interpolation used when inverting spatial transforms through a single boolean, nearest_interp: the default (True) forces nearest, and False reuses the interpolation modes recorded by the forward transforms. There is no way to request a specific mode — for example, inverting a soft segmentation with bilinear, which is smooth and range-preserving for in-range inputs, whereas reusing a forward spline order produces overshoot beyond the valid range (see #7836 for the reported behavior and figures).
This PR adds an optional interp argument to Invertd and Invert:
Accepted values: grid-sample/interpolate mode strings (e.g. "bilinear", "nearest", "bicubic") or spline orders 0–5. For Invertd it also accepts per-key sequences, with None items falling back to the nearest_interp behavior for the corresponding key.
Precedence: when provided, interp takes precedence over both nearest_interp and the recorded forward modes; None (the default) preserves the existing behavior exactly.
Implementation reuses convert_applied_interp_mode (already mode-general) — no changes to the inverse machinery. Constructors validate and normalize the requested modes with look_up_option (whitespace-stripped; mode strings checked against GridSampleMode/InterpolateMode values; spline orders limited to 0–5), and the normalized value is what gets used. When the requested mode supports align_corners ("linear", "bilinear", "bicubic", "trilinear"), the alignment recorded by the forward transforms is preserved via a new opt-in preserve_align_corners flag on convert_applied_interp_mode (default False, so all existing callers are unaffected); for modes that do not support it, the recorded alignment is reset, as with nearest.

Testing
New TestInvertdInterp (12 tests) and TestInvertInterp (6 tests): positional-argument compatibility, invalid interp/sequence-length errors, allow_missing_keys, metadata/affine preservation, legacy-path equality against manually computed expected outputs, interp override with nearest/bilinear forwards, per-key sequences and None fallback, precedence over both legacy flags, and spline coverage. Fundamental tests are SciPy-independent; the spline tests skip cleanly without SciPy (pristine no-SciPy baseline on unmodified dev: 1 failed, 9 passed — a pre-existing TestInvertd::test_invert/RandAffined failure identical on the patched tree).
pytest tests/transforms/inverse/ tests/transforms/post/ -q: 328 passed, 67 skipped, 2 subtests passed (the 67 skips are optional-dependency guards). These targeted suites cover the touched code; the complete MONAI test suite was not run in the authoring environment.
black 26.10.0 / isort 9.0.2 / ruff 0.16.10 (the repository's pinned pre-commit versions): clean. pyrefly (the repository's static type checker): 0 errors on pristine dev and 0 on the patched tree.
Reproduction of the issue scenario (synthetic saturated soft segmentations, 2D and 3D): reusing a recorded spline order places up to 40.8% of voxels outside [0, 1] (max excursion 0.054); with interp="bilinear" the excursion drops ~19x (0.0029, inherited from the forward pass) and is exactly 0 for bilinear/nearest-forward pipelines.
Known limitations
interp chooses the interpolation; it does not clip values or guarantee that outputs stay within any range — values outside [0, 1] introduced by the forward pass are interpolated, not removed.
Accepted modes are the union of what the different inverse resamplers support; whether a specific mode is usable depends on the transforms being inverted (spline orders require SciPy; grid-sample-based inverses such as Spacing support "bilinear", "nearest" and "bicubic").
When the recorded mode already equals the requested mode, interp is a no-op.
A separate latent issue in convert_applied_interp_mode (per-channel mode-list lengths, unreachable from shipped transforms on dev) is outside the scope of the present contribution and may be addressed independently.

…polation mode
Invertd and Invert control the interpolation used when inverting spatial
transforms through a single boolean, nearest_interp: the default (True) forces
`nearest`, and False reuses the interpolation modes recorded by the forward
transforms. There is no way to request a specific mode -- for example,
inverting a soft segmentation with `bilinear`, which is smooth and
range-preserving for in-range inputs, whereas reusing a forward spline order
produces overshoot beyond the valid range (Project-MONAI#7836).
This adds an optional `interp` argument to both classes:
- accepted values are grid-sample/interpolate mode strings (e.g. "bilinear",
"nearest", "bicubic") or spline orders 0-5; Invertd also accepts per-key
sequences, with None items falling back to the nearest_interp behavior for
the corresponding key
- when provided, interp takes precedence over both nearest_interp and the
recorded forward modes; None (the default) preserves existing behavior
- implementation reuses convert_applied_interp_mode (already mode-general);
no changes to the inverse machinery. Constructors validate and normalize the
requested modes via look_up_option, and the normalized value is what gets
used
interp is appended as the last constructor parameter (no positional-argument
shifts) and defaults to None; the default, nearest_interp=True and
nearest_interp=False paths are behavior-identical to before.

Walkthrough
Invert and Invertd add an optional interp argument for inverse interpolation. Both accept supported interpolation strings and spline orders from 0 through 5. Invertd also accepts per-key settings. Explicit settings override recorded modes and nearest_interp; None retains the existing behavior. The conversion utility adds an option to preserve recorded alignment metadata. Tests cover validation, precedence, fallback behavior, and spline modes.

Addresses a CodeRabbit review finding on Project-MONAI#9240: the explicit override relied
on convert_applied_interp_mode's default align_corners=None, which reset the
alignment recorded by the forward transforms -- for alignment-capable modes
this changed the inverse geometry even when the requested mode matched the
recorded one (e.g. a Resize(mode="bilinear", align_corners=True) forward).
convert_applied_interp_mode gains an opt-in preserve_align_corners flag
(default False, so every existing caller is unaffected), and both override
paths preserve the recorded alignment for "linear"/"bilinear"/"bicubic"/
"trilinear" and reset it for modes that do not support it (e.g. nearest,
spline orders). Documented in the docstrings and covered by new regression
tests on both interfaces.

Preserve valid alignment for Affine inverses.
For interp="nearest" or a spline order, this resets alignment to TraceKeys.NONE. Affine.inverse passes that sentinel to AffineGrid, which treats it as true and scales the grid. The inverse can therefore sample incorrect coordinates. Preserve the recorded boolean for Affine inverses, including in Invertd. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
