feat: read simctl's JSON and stop blocking the event loop - #138
Blocking: fixed sleeps and ps/kill run through execSync, which blocks the CLI's event loop for about 500 ms on each app start and stop, including log streaming.
Killing the wrong app: stopping an app runs kill -9 on anything matching ps -ef | grep <project name> | grep /<device id>/. A project named app matches every installed app on that simulator, because their paths contain .app. I reproduced this: stopping an unrelated app killed the running one. The loop also has no limit.
Text parsing: devices come from a regex over simctl list devices, and one unexpected line fails the whole listing.
Boot: a fixed 1-second sleep stands in for waiting. In one branch boot isn't awaited, so booting an already booted device crashes the process with an unhandled rejection, which I also reproduced.
--debug-brk:simctl launch -w <device> <app> <args> fails on Xcode 26 with Invalid device, so ns debug ios --debug-brk can't start the app on a simulator.
Smaller bugs:
The requested device is ignored when the Simulator app isn't running.
open breaks on Xcode paths with spaces.
The default device is picked by sorting versions as text, so 9.3 beats 26.2, and it can land on a tvOS device.
getRunningSimulator never resolves.
A leftover app folder with no .app crashes getInstalledApplications.
What is the new behavior?
Devices come from simctl list devices --json. fullId keeps its format because the CLI reads the model from it.
Stopping uses simctl terminate. If that fails for any reason other than the app not running, it kills the exact pid from launchctl list.
Booting uses simctl boot, then opens the Simulator app if it's closed, then waits with simctl bootstatus -b. The app opens without -CurrentDeviceUDID, because told which device to show, it boots that device too and shows Unable to boot device in current state: Booted when simctl wins. It then shows whatever is booted.
All the sync process calls and sleeps are gone from these paths.
sendNotification no longer lists devices first. simctl reports an unknown device itself.
The default device is the iPhone on the newest iOS runtime.
getRunningSimulators no longer waits 500 ms when nothing is booted.
Left as is: stopping an app still waits until it has had 3 seconds to start, the old guard against freezing the simulator when an app is killed on its splash screen. Starting an app within that window also still returns the existing launch, which debug sessions rely on, but now with its real result instead of undefined.
The public API is unchanged. The bundleExecutable argument of stopApplication is still accepted but ignored.
ns debug ios --debug-brk: the app waits, a CDP client connects, and JS then runs
ns devices
Launching with the Simulator app closed, checking the app's windows for error dialogs: 0 of 10 launches showed one with this order, against 3 of 4 when the app opened first. The requested device's window opens each time, and only that device boots. ns run --device from closed also works.
Stress tests on iOS 26.2 and 18.6: 12 restart cycles with a new pid each and nothing left running, and a SIGSTOPped app is stopped in under 200 ms.
Adds 21 tests, run with npm test. CI doesn't run them yet, since the only workflow is the release one.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for selecting and launching simulators across iOS, tvOS, and visionOS runtimes, with fallback selection based on the newest available device.
Simulator startup now waits for the device to finish booting. App launches and stops are coordinated to improve reliability.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of unavailable devices, missing applications, and simulator launch or termination errors.
Tests
Added coverage for simulator selection, booting, app launches and stops, and device-list parsing.
Devices come from simctl list devices --json instead of a regex over its text output. Stopping an app uses simctl terminate, falling back to killing the exact pid from launchctl, rather than kill -9 on anything ps | grep matched, which could kill other apps on the simulator. Booting waits on simctl bootstatus -b instead of a fixed sleep, and the fixed sleeps around starting and stopping apps, which blocked the event loop, are gone.
Also fixes --wait-for-debugger, whose -w form simctl now rejects with app arguments, boot errors that crashed the process as unhandled rejections, the requested device being ignored when the Simulator app wasn't running, Xcode paths with spaces, the default device preferring whichever runtime sorted last as text, and getRunningSimulator never resolving.

Walkthrough
The changes update asynchronous simctl commands, simulator discovery and startup, and application launch and stop handling. They also add tests for device parsing, simulator startup, and application lifecycle behavior.

Summary
Simctl and runtime foundations lib/declarations.ts, lib/simctl.ts, lib/xcode.ts, test/simctl.test.js, package.json, .gitignore
Simctl adds JSON device parsing, runtime and version comparison, boot waiting, and app-PID lookup. Xcode command helpers now return promises. Tests cover parsing and PID matching, and the test script runs the test suite.
Device selection and startup lib/utils.ts, lib/ios-sim.ts, lib/iphone-simulator-common.ts, lib/iphone-simulator-xcode-simctl.ts, test/simulator.test.js
Simulator discovery uses asynchronous polling. Startup selects a device, boots it when needed, starts the version-appropriate simulator app, and waits for boot completion. The tests cover device selection and startup outcomes.
Application launch and stop lib/iphone-simulator-xcode-simctl.ts, test/simulator.test.js
Launches and stops are deduplicated by device and app. Stops wait out the launch interval and can fall back to killing the app PID. Tests cover reuse, retries, concurrent stops, termination errors, and notification forwarding.

A rabbit taps the boot-time drum, While JSON lists the devices that come. Apps launch, then rest, then close with care, A PID waits if stop commands err. The tests hop through the simulator air.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
Told which device to show, Simulator.app boots a shut-down device itself and shows an error dialog when simctl got there first. simctl now boots the device, and the app opens without a device argument and shows what is booted.

Tolerate the Booting state in boot.
startSimulator skips boot only for a Booted device. A Booting device reaches boot, which suppresses only errors containing current state: Booted. simctl boot can report Unable to boot device in current state: Booting, so boot rethrows before bootAndWait can wait for readiness.
Accept both states.

Fix the test script: it fails on Node 21 and later.
node --test test/ passes a bare directory. Several reports say that Node 22 and later treat positional arguments as file globs. They then load test/ as a module and fail with Cannot find module '.../test'. The bare directory form fails on Node 22 and works on Node 20. Another report says directory arguments are accepted only from Node 23 on. The reports disagree on the exact versions. Even so, npm test is likely to fail on a current Node toolchain before any test runs.
The test files are named *.test.js. Use a quoted glob, or call node --test with no path. The suite also needs a Node version with t.mock.timers and Date mocking, which is newer than the declared engines.node of >=6.0.0.
