📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added SuperKMeans clustering for FP32 and FP16 data, with options to fit centroids, predict cluster assignments, or do both. Fitting supports a configurable iteration count and optional inertia output.
Added pruned nearest-neighbor assignment for eligible workloads. When pruning is unavailable or its requirements are not met, assignment uses the full search.
Documentation
Added C++ API reference for SuperKMeans configuration and supported operations.
Adds SuperKMeans fit, predict, and fit_predict APIs for float and half inputs. The implementation runs fixed-iteration Lloyd updates and can use cuTile-based pruned top-1 assignment when availability and dimension conditions hold. Adds build integration, API documentation, and CUDA tests.
Changes: SuperKMeans and pruned nearest-neighbor assignment

Summary
cuTile fused-filter kernel and build integration cpp/src/distance/detail/pruned_top_1_nn/cutile/*, cpp/include/cuvs/detail/jit_lto/pruned_top_1_nn/*, cpp/CMakeLists.txt
Adds a half-precision fused-filter kernel, cubin export configuration, and C++ launcher. Registers generated sources and headers in the build when cuTile is enabled.
Adds workspace handling, optional row ordering, and tiled candidate pruning for float and half inputs. Partial-distance filtering can discard candidates before full distances are computed.
SuperKMeans API and implementation cpp/include/cuvs/cluster/kmeans.hpp, cpp/src/cluster/detail/superkmeans.cuh, cpp/src/cluster/kmeans_superkmeans.cu, cpp/CMakeLists.txt, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-cluster-kmeans.md
Adds float and half fit, predict, and fit_predict overloads. Fitting samples initial centroids, performs the requested Lloyd iterations, and retains centroids for empty clusters. Documents the APIs and parameters.
Float SuperKMeans can produce incorrect assignments on the pruned path, while the new test may not exercise that path. Correct the filter calculation and make pruning coverage explicit before merging.

Explanation
The description contains only the repository's contribution template and two reference links (an arXiv paper on Super K-Means and the cwida/SuperKMeans GPU branch). It does not describe the changes in words. Still, the links name the Super K-Means algorithm that the changeset implements (the superkmeans fit/predict API, the cuTile pruned 1-NN filter, and the kmeans_superkmeans tests), so the description is related to the changeset. Under the lenient criteria, it is not off-topic.

91-94: Trivial · Performance & Scalability
Consider bounding the fixed 2 GiB survivor-list workspace.
packed reserves min(m, kRowBatchSize) * kCentroidBatchSize * sizeof(int64_t) bytes. When m >= 131072, this is 131072 × 2048 × 8 bytes, about 2 GiB. The size does not depend on the actual survivor count. superkmeans::pruned_assignment allocates this workspace for the whole fit, in addition to X, the FP16 copies, and the norms. On GPUs with 8–16 GiB, a dataset that fits in memory can still fail with OOM in the pruned path. The full-assignment path does not need this workspace. A caller cannot reduce kRowBatchSize through the public API. Consider one of these options:
Derive the row batch size from the free device memory.
Expose the row batch size as a field of superkmeans_params.
Document the memory requirement in the superkmeans_params Doxygen.

Capture bin2c output at the shared generation boundary.
generate_cutile_kernels.cmake passes > to bin2c as a literal argument because the custom command uses VERBATIM. It does not redirect stdout to the embedded header. The merge base already contains this defect for smoke and fused-1NN, but this PR adds the fused-filter invocation and its generated files to cuvs_objs. cuTile-enabled builds can therefore fail when the fused-filter header is missing.
Use a CMake helper with execute_process(OUTPUT_FILE ...), or another CMake-supported output-capture mechanism, instead of the literal > argument.

superkmeans_params and fit / fit_predict overloads for float and half
input. Without pruning (dim below one 256-dim tile, or at most 256
clusters) fit runs Lloyd's iterations from SuperKMeans' random start
rows; the pruned path is not implemented yet and fails.

The partial GEMM over the first d' dims fused with the first pruning
filter, from SuperKMeans' GPU k-means: per (row, centroid tile) it
keeps the centroids whose partial distance is under the row's bound
and packs them into fixed segments. FP16 only, as in SuperKMeans,
where float data is filtered on half copies. Exported next to the
fused 1-NN kernels, with a planner and launcher; not used yet.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
After the first iteration, each row starts from its current centroid:
the fused first filter over the first 256 dims (FP16; float rows are
filtered on half copies), then a pruning kernel ported from SuperKMeans
that finishes the tail dims for the survivors with ADSampling re-filters
and keeps the closest. Rows and centroids go in fixed-size batches; d'
stays at 256 and there is no rotation, so the bound is a heuristic.
Builds or devices without the filter's cubin assign in full.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Within a row batch the pruning kernel takes the rows with the most
first-filter survivors in the previous iteration first, as SuperKMeans
does: the kernel counts each row's survivors and an approximate
segmented radix sort of the counts orders the next call's rows. The
smoke test now has several row batches.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With a stream pool on the handle, the pruned assignment's row batches
round-robin over up to two of its streams, each with its own survivor
lists; without one they stay on the main stream. The kernels and the
filter launcher take a stream. The smoke test runs once with a
two-stream pool.

cuvs::distance::pruned_top_1_nn mirrors top_1_nn's interface (output,
x, y, norms, m, n, k, params, workspace) for the approximate, warm-started
1-NN; the fused filter and pruning kernels move to distance/detail.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pruning kernel compacts each row's survivors in its region of the
first filter's lists, with only the first 32 entries in shared memory,
so centroid batches grow to 2048 without lowering occupancy.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The fused filter carries each row's survivor count across centroid tiles
and writes one list per row, so the pruning kernel reads it directly
instead of compacting per-tile segments.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pruning needs dim > 256 (d' < d), so the pruning kernel always has tail
dims and one argmin path. The re-filter threshold comes from the current
best, and the list is read a window at a time.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Skip the test when pruned assignment is unavailable.
KmeansSuperKMeans.Pruned can run entirely through full assignment. dim=768 satisfies the size conditions, but is_pruned_top_1_nn_available(768) is false when the cuTile filter is not built or is unavailable on the device. The test then checks only full-assignment inertia, so it can pass without exercising pruned_assignment.
Add an availability-gated test, or split the fallback and pruned cases.

Compute first-tile norms from the FP16 filter copies.
When T is float, the fused filter uses FP16 copies but row_norms_ and centroid_norms_ use FP32 values. This can reject a true nearest centroid before the exact float tail is evaluated.
For example, with dim = 512, let the row and candidate centroid contain 1.0004 in every dimension. FP16 conversion rounds this value to 1.0. For the first 256 dimensions, the filter computes:
2 * 256 * 1.0004² - 2 * 256 * 1.0² = 0.40968192
If the current assigned centroid has distance 0.5, the first-filter threshold is:
The candidate is therefore filtered, although its full float distance is zero. This is independent of the documented ADSampling heuristic: with matching FP32 operands, its first-tile distance would be zero and would pass the same threshold.

Row batches alternate between the main stream and, with a stream pool on
the handle, the pool's first stream, so one pool stream is enough, as for
kmeans' out-of-core fit. Without a pool everything runs on the main
stream. Each stream needs its own first-filter survivor lists (2 GiB at
128K rows x 2K centroids).
