fix(telemetry): mask error text after credential words - #1619
The error-message template can retain credential values when they contain allowed words. For example, password=wrong user currently becomes <x> wrong user.
Stop processing the first line when a credential word is encountered, replacing that word and the remaining text with <x>. This preserves the diagnostic prefix and leaves error hashing and the event structure unchanged.
This intentionally also removes diagnostic text following credential words. It follows the existing tokenization rules and does not attempt general-purpose secret detection.
Implemented with Codex assistance.
How did you verify your code works?
Codex ran the checks in a cloud development environment. The added regression cases failed against the original implementation. With the fix, all 426 telemetry tests passed, including the 61 error-detail tests. Type checks across all 13 workspaces, formatting, lint, and git diff --check also passed.
A separate Codex review, assisted by Open Code Review’s delegation mode for file selection and rule preparation, covered both changed files and reported no defects requiring changes. Additional checks of extracted template functions covered credential masking, compatibility, and newline boundaries; these were not application-level tests.
Cost side effects
None. This changes local string processing and adds no model calls, warehouse queries, or cloud resources.

Summary by cubic
Fixes#1588, where error messages could leak credential values when the value itself consisted of allowed vocabulary words—password=wrong user previously became <x> wrong user. The template now stops at the first credential word and masks that word plus the rest of the line as <x>, so the value cannot appear.
Bug Fixes
Expands the exported credential word list with aliases like apikey, sessionid, and signature, matching whole words only to avoid false positives inside words like keychain.
Recognizes connection string keys in connection_string, connection-string, and spaced connection string assignment forms, on the first line only.
Strips ANSI escapes through a shared helper with separate template and legacy profiles; the legacy profile preserves historical maskString output and error hashes.
Bounds raw first-line processing at 8192 UTF-16 code units, failing closed to <x> for oversized lines.
Event structure and first-line-only processing are unchanged.
Written for commit 2c99e1a. Summary will update on new commits.

Bug Fixes
Error messages now hide credential-related terms and any following details on the first line, while retaining diagnostic information that appears before credentials.
Credential detection handles connection-string variants and ignores ANSI formatting. Messages with an oversized first line are safely omitted.
Telemetry event messages continue to preserve existing fingerprinting behavior while masking credential suffixes.

Explanation
Issue #1588 requires templateErrorMessage to mask a credential word and all remaining text on the first line. error-detail.ts now stops processing at the first CREDENTIAL_WORDS match and emits one <x> placeholder for that suffix. Ansi.normalize(..., "template") preserves first-line processing and rejects oversized first lines. Regression tests cover password is connection refused, password=wrong user, aliases, boundaries, and event output.

WARNING: This set re-declares keys that Telemetry.SENSITIVE_KEYS (packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts:1623) already treats as credentials, but omits several of its alias spellings, so the defect this PR fixes is still reachable for them.
templateErrorMessage("request failed: apikey=wrong user") returns request failed <x> wrong user: apikey is not a whole token in this set, so it is not in ERROR_VOCABULARY either, becomes <x> (whose preceding token was vocabulary), and the loop never breaks — the value words survive. The same holds for accesstoken, authtoken, refreshtoken, bearertoken, jwttoken, jwtsecret, clientsecret, appsecret, signature, sig and connection_string, all declared sensitive in SENSITIVE_KEYS and all absent here. The new test case api_key=wrong user passes only because the tokenizer splits it into api + key.
Derive both lists from one shared sensitive-key source (or at least add the alias spellings) so a known-sensitive spelling cannot regress to leaking its value.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SUGGESTION: Breaking at every credential word collapses several common error templates the vocabulary was explicitly built for. duplicate key value violates unique constraint "x" (Postgres) becomes duplicate <x>; session expired, auth failed: ..., key not found and token expired become <x>. error_hash still separates them, but the shipped error_message (consumed via packages/opencode/src/session/prompt.ts:2211) loses exactly the classification words that make the template useful for triage.
The tradeoff is intentional per the PR description; consider stating that cost in the doc comment above, or excluding the ambiguous non-value nouns (key, session) from the break, so a later reader does not "fix" the truncation back.

SUGGESTION: This hand-maintained copy of the new production CREDENTIAL_WORDS set (error-detail.ts:5) must be edited in lockstep with it. The guard test vocabulary is sorted and holds no credential words iterates only this local copy, so a credential word added to the production set that also exists in ERROR_VOCABULARY would be pushed into error_message before the loop breaks, and no test would notice.
Export CREDENTIAL_WORDS from error-detail.ts and iterate that here instead of duplicating the list.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SUGGESTION: This assertion recomputes the hash with the same expression describeToolError uses, so it cannot detect a change in how the hash is derived — unlike the pre-existing test at line 120, which pins a literal digest. Pin the literal value instead (e.g. expect(detail.errorHash).toBe("<digest>")) so a future change to the hash input, such as hashing the template instead of maskString(raw), fails here. That is the property the test name claims to protect.
The shared Ansi module resolves the prior WARNING-level concern: strip-ansi and the historical masking regex now live behind one entry point, PM_CAP/PM_LOOKAHEAD derive from Ansi.MAX_INPUT/Ansi.LOOKAHEAD, and the template path fails closed instead of running unbounded. The legacy profile stays byte-equivalent for maskString because every pmMask caller already bounds its input (index.ts:1684, 1702, 1703), which the pinned hash and 96-input corpus digests in ansi.test.ts verify. Boundary handling is sound: slice(0, MAX_INPUT + 1) plus the pre-strip length check rejects an 8193-code-unit line, keeps an exact 8192-unit line followed by any of the five separators, and cannot emit a split surrogate pair. All previously reported items (credential alias coverage, \b lookarounds, privatekey, duplicated test list, literal hash pin, ANSI drift) are fixed in current code.
The incremental commit fixes both prior WARNINGs: the \b anchor is replaced with (?<![A-Za-z])...(?![A-Za-z]) lookarounds (so db_connection_string, DATABASE_CONNECTION_STRING and connection_string_value now mask), and privatekey is added to CREDENTIAL_WORDS. The new spaced-key regex handles connection string / connection string / tab-separated forms only when followed by : or =, and the added boundary, newline and negative cases are consistent with the tokenizer's letter boundaries.
The \b-anchored connection_string normalization misses db_connection_string / DATABASE_CONNECTION_STRING, so value words still leak (the #1588 defect class).
Second ANSI stripper alongside Telemetry.maskString's inline rule; the two cover different escapes, so the template and the hash see differently sanitized text.
packages/opencode/test/telemetry/error-detail.test.ts - 0 issues (previously reported test findings verified as fixed: the test now imports the exported CREDENTIAL_WORDS set and pins a literal digest)
New CREDENTIAL_WORDS omits alias spellings already declared sensitive in Telemetry.SENSITIVE_KEYS (apikey, accesstoken, clientsecret, signature, …), so the fixed leak still occurs: apikey=wrong user → request failed <x> wrong user.
Breaking at every credential word collapses common templates (duplicate key value violates unique constraint → duplicate <x>, session expired → <x>); document the diagnostic cost or exempt ambiguous nouns.

WARNING:\b anchoring leaves prefixed connection_string keys unmasked, so the #1588 leak survives
The regex uses word boundaries and _ counts as a word character, so db_connection_string=wrong user, DATABASE_CONNECTION_STRING=wrong user and connection_string_value=... never match this line. Tokenization then yields connection + string (both in ERROR_VOCABULARY), neither is a credential word, so the loop never breaks and the value words survive: DATABASE_CONNECTION_STRING=wrong user becomes database connection string wrong user. Telemetry.SENSITIVE_KEYS / isSensitiveKey (packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts:1657) already treats *_connection_string and connection_string_* as sensitive, so this is the same key class in another spelling.
A non-letter lookaround closes it while still leaving disconnection_string and connection_stringify as prose:

SUGGESTION: This is now the second ANSI stripper in the telemetry path, and the two disagree
Telemetry.maskString already removes escapes inline (packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts:1716) before hashing, and describeToolError runs both helpers over the same raw string. The rules differ: the masker covers 7-bit CSI and OSC only, while strip-ansi also handles 8-bit CSI (\x9b, exercised by the new test at test/telemetry/error-detail.test.ts:92) and unterminated sequences. The template and the hash are therefore derived from differently sanitized text, and a future escape-sequence fix has to land twice. Extracting one shared helper (ideally with the same 8 KB input cap maskString applies, since this function runs on unbounded tool error text) would remove the drift.

SUGGESTION: The camelCase expansion skips privatekey
private_key is declared sensitive in Telemetry.SENSITIVE_KEYS, and the other compound entries from that list got their joined spelling here (secretkey, apikey, jwttoken, clientsecret, ...), but privatekey is missing. So privateKey=wrong user still renders as request failed <x> wrong user — the leak shape this PR fixes. Add privatekey plus a row in the alias test.

SUGGESTION: This is now the second ANSI stripper in the telemetry path, and only this one runs on unbounded input
Telemetry.maskString already removes escapes inline (packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts:1716) before hashing, and describeToolError runs both helpers over the same raw string. The rules differ: maskString covers 7-bit CSI and OSC only, while strip-ansi also handles 8-bit CSI (\x9b, exercised by test/telemetry/error-detail.test.ts:144) and unterminated sequences. The template and the hash are therefore derived from differently sanitized text, and a future escape-sequence fix has to land twice.
Unlike maskString, this path also has no 8 KB cap (index.ts:1676), and the first line of a tool error can be arbitrarily long, so stripAnsi plus the two global replaces run over the whole line. Extracting one shared, capped helper would remove both drifts.
Use a shared ANSI entry point with explicit template and legacy profiles. Bound raw first-line processing while preserving historical maskString output and error fingerprints.
Add input-limit, malformed ANSI and fingerprint compatibility regressions.

SUGGESTION: The 8 KB guard measures the raw line before ANSI stripping, so escape-heavy lines lose their whole template even when almost no visible text was cut
The reject happens on first.length > MAX_INPUT before stripAnsi, and the pinned case ["ANSI-only text", "\x1b[0m".repeat(3000)] locks that in. A tool error whose first line is "connection refused " + "\x1b[0m".repeat(2400) (about 9.6K code units, 19 visible characters) used to template to connection refused and now becomes <x>: the diagnostics are dropped for no privacy gain, because everything past the cut is discarded whole, so a cut key or escape cannot leak its value.
Basing the decision on the stripped length (strip the already-sliced window and reject only when the result still reaches MAX_INPUT) keeps the template for coloured tool logs while keeping the unbounded-input bound.
